Hi Jesse,
I am in the same boat as you. My Superdrive worked like a champ for quite awhile, but just yesterday it started spitting out everything I tried to feed it like a fussy toddler.
After restarting, I got it to take a disc but it wouldn't mount and the disc would not eject. When I checked the system profiler it told me that I had no burner attached. Ten or fifteen restarts later holding the eject button down, the disc popped out.
This morning the system profiler tells me that I have a drive again after having it shut down over night, but it is back to spitting everything out. I am taking it in again for repair (2 logic boards and a heat sink replaced already). As you can imagine I am getting a tad frustrated.
When the machine works, it works great - I love it. Now its getting to the point where everytime I open the lid I am wondering what will go wrong. I don't know what good it will do but I am going to ask for a replacement. I am thinking I got a lemon.
I will let you know what I find out about the super drive though when they tell me.

  • My macbook wont boot up, black screen and the cd drive keeps making a constant sound. What to do?

My macbook wont boot up. When I turn it on, the screen turns black right away and the cd/dvd drive keeps making a constant "ejecting" sound.
The strange thing though is that once in a while starts up propperly, but suddely goes black again (after a min. or two), and the ejecting sound comes back. What to do, and yh, I've never done a back up so would it be possible to take out the HD and regain whats in there?
    Any help would be appriciated!

  • Macbook wont go to sleep on its own

hi guys...my macbook wont go to sleep on its own. i mean, Energy Saver Preferences is set to turn-off the display in 1 minute, and to make the computer sleep in 3 minutes - but the macbook wont turn off the display or sleep, based on the settings. Bt the way, when i make it sleep (Apple menu or by using Command-Option-Eject), the computer sleeps - no prob when sleep is manually executed.
    Help please!
    Thanks

In my case I think (not 100% sure other than a usb cause) was/is (b); a non-apple usb wired keyboard with its own usb ports or a bluetooth dongle plugged into my 27"s usb port.  I am not about to part with either of them. And it just wasn't worth my time narrowing it down any further if that was at all possible so (c).
hi, i take your points, given you start your reply with "yes".
i'm in a similar boat and i've spent far too long scouring the apple discussions for a solution (with some issues you're better off googling than coming here for truth). i have also got a case open with my applecare coverage but the responses so far have verged on ignorant (i think they respond badly so you go away), so on we go.
i'm astounded that the terminal command pmset -g doesn't always provide an answer, but it seems a decent part of the solution. checking over the console and activity help too.
i've never had the issue with other hardware, so it must be a combo regarding the newer stuff + lion, wouldn't you say?

  • I bought the Snow Leopard Update but now my macbook wont even accept the DVD and keeps ejecting it. This is the same for all DVDs.

I have a very old (refurbished, bought over 4 years ago) macbook pro 15". It's been running ok on OS X 10.5.8 until very recently. It started ejecting disks, and then the new adobe flash player update wouldn't work. Lots of other little things have been happening as well.
I had been considering buying a new macbook, but one of the Apple store people suggested I update instead (a much cheaper alternative!). So I bought Snow Leopard, and it arrived in the post today. But now my macbook wont even accept the dvd. It takes it in, whirs and complains a bit (for less than 60 seconds) then ejects it again. I have tried cleaning the disk, cleaning the disk area with a credit card + lens cleaner (a trick I saw recommended on this forum). But no luck.
    Any advice?
I am a trainee teacher and actually will be gutted to have to get a new laptop (as I really cant afford it). BUT obviously if I have to I will. I just need to extend the life of this one for as long as possible, until I have more money to get a better one!

Bring your MBP to an Apple store genius bar and see what they say about your MBP optical drive.
Look on the OWC web site.  They sell optical drives for older MBPs.  Perhaps there is one that will fit yours.  Installing one is not brain surgery.
Otherwise examine the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites for replacements.
    Ciao.

  • I am trying to insert a disk into my cd drive, but it wont take it...

I am trying to insert a disk into my cd drive, but it wont take it... there is nothing in the drive as i can get the disk in up to the point of practically losing it.
If anyone can help with this I would greatly appreciate it.  I have looked in system profiler and as far as I can see there is no software linking the drive to the MacBookPro.
    Many Thanks.

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • Pronblems my macbook wont pass the apple logo

i have a macbook with the snowleopard osx 10.6.4 and my macbook wont boot past the apple logo!

    cmd+v
    taking of battery
    taking of adpter
press the shift button after hearing the boot sound
evry single thing but it wont just past that hateful apple logo!!
the last operation i did was to cancel from my avast antivirus for mac (log system file) that was "according to the antivirus" a decompression bomb so i eliminated it directly from the source in finder library and after that pages won't just open and so i tried rebooting the system hoping it'll solve the problem but then it just keeps remaining stuck at the apple logo!!

my macbook wont turn on. its a total black out even the led light on the charger has no light. the battery indicator has no light its a total blackout. if you pressed the power button theres no light at the bottom. nothing at all even the spin you cant hear anything. blackout as in

Try resetting the System Mangement Controller -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.
If that has no effect, then your only recourse is to take your machine to your local Apple Store/AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine.

  • Macbook wont start and makes ticking noise

The subject line says it all. My macbook wont start and it makes clicking noises from inside the case, kind of like a watch. The display turns on and the chime goes when it starts, but the screen stays white and nothing happens.

You can run diagnostics from the OSX disc. Insert disc one and while it is booting hold down the d key. This should take you into diagnostics.
You might also try to reset PRAM AND PMU first.

My Macbook Pro takes a long time (41 secs) from start to reach log-in - It used to be almost instantaneous, I'm running Lion OS. I thought this might be because I'd used a lot of disk space but I've now reduced that - I'm only using 40 of the 320 gb available. I have no games and I've unchecked the "re-open windows" option on shutdown. The rest of the preformance (once in) remains good.

41 seconds is actually a little faster then normal. Boot from completely off is normally around 45-50 seconds.
Your computer never ever came on almost instantaneously from completely off. You are confusing waking up from sleep mode and booting the computer from completely off.

My macbook seems to be going crazy. At certain points (and for hours) I get the oh snap page on chrome, safari doesnt work, macbook wont let me create any files or for example upload music to itunes. I restored my mac so im sure its not a malware problem. The only thing that solves it is switching off and on , but sometimes I have to do that for 6-7 times before its ok or wait for a few hours. Some help please

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • So... how much RAM can my Macbook actually take? How to upgrade?

Hi all. I have a Macbook I purchased around May of 2011. It's the last of its kind to be released before the Macbook was discontinued in July of 2011. I have Snow Leopard and I'm considering upgrading to Mountain Lion because I heard that World of Warcraft no longer supports Leopard, and Snow Leopard is next in line to be dropped. Problem is I only have 2GB of RAM, and while it's treated me well so far, I'd like to upgrade. I've read that my Macbook can take only 4GB through Apple, but I've heard it can take 8GB from other sources. Can I take the safe route and only install 4GB and be okay? I only use my Macbook for web surfing, iTunes, Microsoft Word, and occasionally WoW or games on Steam. So far I can play WoW and Flash games without any issues with 2GB of RAM, but I don't know if that will change when I upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I know where to buy the proper RAM, but I don't feel comfortable installing it myself. I know Apple won't install third party RAM, so that's out unless I buy Apple (and I wouldn't mind, but I don't know how much it costs.) Where can I take it? Will Geek Squad at Best Buy do it? Or should I just buy from Apple and have them install it? Should I take the "safe" route and get 4GB of RAM or try 6GB? Will 6GB hurt my computer?

The last MacBooks produced can use 8 GB RAM and you can upgrade them to the latest version of OS X. Purchase memory from OWC / MacSales or Crucial.
Installing memory is a do it yourself project but if you are not comfortable with that then have an Apple Authorized Service Provider do it for you. Next best choice is to have a competent computer repair shop perform the installation.
I wouldn't have Best Buy wash my car.

That indicates a hardware failure. Read here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
If nothing works, you most likely have a hardware failure. Make an appointment at an Apple store to confirm.
