Macbook wouldn't boot, somehow sorted itself out, but unsure of the cause

Something happened to my Macbook that I read about in the forums here: It kept making a clicking noise, wouldn't boot, showed a question mark in a folder on a grey background. As per the advice given to others, I decided to put in the system software CD. Since there was already a disk in the drive, I held down the trackpad button then booted it again. The disk came out, and awesomely it booted like normal. I'm not sure what did it, but it's working fine now. My question is, why did it happen and will it happen again? What can I do to keep my hard drive alive?
Thanks

Either your hard drive is dying and it tried to boot from an unbootable optical disk,
or your optical drive is going bad
or the optical disk you had in the drive is bad.
Regardless, it probably will happen again at some point.

Nothing, they all die eventually. The 2.5" hard drives in notebook computers usually die after about 3 years. My last hard drive died after 2.5 years.
You do have good backups, don't you?

My early 2011 MBP laptop (OS Yosemite 10.2.2) recently started logging itself out.  I narrowed the problem to the external monitor which is connected with a Thunderbolt adapter. I installed Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2, that did not correct the problem. When I disconnect the external monitor, the problem went away. Is there something I can do to be able to use the external monitor again?

  • IPod 6th gen deletes everything off itself out of blue, for the second time

    Hello,
I have a June 2008-bought 6 gen 80 Gb iPod classic and, knock on wood, it's the first one I've had that didn't die on me within a year. However, I am experiencing an annoying problem with it. This happened for the second time: iTunes freezes at the point I'm adding songs to the iPod and the moment it unfreezes, there's nothing on my iPod and I have to start over. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong and how should I prevent this, as it's obviously annoying?

So, I did all that and started filling the iPod. At some point when it was 1/4 full, iTunes froze and started "verifying" it. I plugged it out, but too late, it said there was no music on it.
However, when I plug it in, it shows that the amount of space I used is actually taken...but not by music. This is getting odd.
Is the problem any clearer now?

  • Does the problem with Firefox 36 loading slowly with Norton need a proper fix or will this sort itself out automatically?

The suggested solution of excluding Firefox etc from Auto-Protect, SONAR scans speeds the loading up as a temporary measure but surely leaves the system exposed to any corruption of Firefox elements at a later time?
(The loading time already seems to have reduced significantly over the last couple of days without this exclusion)

I think maybe they need to talk to each other. It was only when Firefox upgraded to the new version (36) that this problem occurred, so there must be something about this that is causing a problem.

  • How do I get rid of an App stuck in waiting. I synced my iPad with my computer, booted my iPad, signed out and back in the store! Help!!

How do I get rid of an app stuck in waiting? I have signed in and out of ITunes store and booted my iPad. I synced my iAd with my computer. I can't use the app or delete it! Thanks!

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

  • Want to get a macbook but unsure about the compatability...

Hi peeps, im looking to get a macbook for University and was wondering if there are the programs I will need... I will need a word processing program, spreadsheet, something similar to powerpoint ect (MS office stuff) Is there anything like this for the mac that is compattable with windows aswell? Also will things like printers, scanners, mobile phone software work on it aswell? Sorry if these are dumb questions.
    Thanks, Nick.

There is a Mac version of Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and as a student you can get the Student/Teacher version (no limitations from the retail version other than licensing) for a good price - about $125.00 after the current rebate. Or you can get Apple's iWork '08 which has a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation application that can import and export in Microsoft Office format (with some limitations). You can also get the open-source NeoOffice which also has the same modules and also imports and exports in Office format.
As to compatibility with printers, scanners, etc. then the answer is "it depends". Many such peripherals are compatible, but not all, with older peripherals less likely to be compatible than newer ones.
    Regards.

  • Ipod totally wiped out but still has the name I named it

My sister plugged in her iPod onto the G4 kast night and this morning all the music has gone. It still had its name that i gave it and so i thought maybe it'd be okay. But the About bit says it has 36GB free so i guess not!! I read an article saying that the new iTunes deleted mp3s randomly. I had better back up mine now. Has this every happened to anyone? And is there a way of getting the music from the iPod back?
    Thank you!!

Unless the songs are still on your iPod (check, scroll through the artists/playlists etc and see if any are there) or backed up somewhere, you're out of luck.
I read an article somewhere a while ago about a program that can 'recover' lost files on iPods and hard disks, however I can't remember what it was called! Bummer!

  • Macbook will not boot OS X

    Hi,
This is my first post around here, so I'm a bit of a newbie (obviously).
I have a black Macbook which dual boots XP and Leopard. I was using the Basilisk II emulator this morning to run System 7.5.5. I changed the resolution of the screen and then the mouse stopped working. I managed to quit to the desktop then went to the Terminal to kill off the process. It told me that I wasn't allowed due to the admin changing my shell permissions. I decided to log out to try and resolve the problem and it went to Welcome Assistant. I quit that and the Mac shut down. On rebooting, I got the OS X boot screen for about 2 minutes then the computer clicked and rebooted. I retried this about 3 times then after calling Apple and reading some sites on another computer, I decided to boot Windows. That booted fine and I am now using it to post this. I installed Mediafour Macdrive and all my files are still there. I do not yet have Applecare but I am still within the year warranty. What's happened and what can I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    neonsonicboy.

    Hi neonsonicboy,
I don't know if I'd consider you a newbie if you're trying to run Basilisk II and System 7.5.5 and you're navigating Terminal.
With that being said, I don't know much about how Basilisk II works... other than I'm familiar with what it is: http://basilisk.cebix.net/
It sounds like, the Mac OS X side got out of whack but I'm unsure if something you were doing in Terminal or via the emulation tool is what caused it. When you stated that you got the OS X boot screen, were you getting just the Apple logo or were you getting a spinning gear underneath it?
A couple of things we can try...
1.) Boot off the Installation disc and attempt to verify directory integrity on the Mac OS X side.
1a.) If unsuccessful, attempt to repair.
1b.) If successful, attempt to boot the unit into Safe Mode
2.) If directory integrity has failed, we may find ourselves in a situation where we need to reinstall the Mac OS X operating system.
But let's try that first step and see what happens, before proceeding with something more invasive like an OS reinstall.

  • Macbook won't  boot up blue screen, volume check failed

Yesterday, my friend's Macbook wouldn't boot up properly. First it came up in terminal mode with the following message displayed:
    disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED)
Today did a re-start. Could not get into Safe Mode. White apple logo screen ran for 3 minutes with progress indicator (circle of sticks) followed by blue screen with progress indicator for 7 minutes, followed by blank blue screen.
Started up in single user mode and ran fsck
    Results were:
    fsck -f
    **/dev/rdisk0s2
    ** Checking HFS Plus Volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED)

    (4, 34)
    **Volume check failed.
    localhost:/root#
This Macbook was purchase approximately 60 days ago. Is there a simple fix to this before going back to Apple?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hello Joe.
Although similar to running fsck, boot from the Tiger install disc #1 that shipped with this MacBook and run Disk First Air repair on the hard drive.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that cannot be successfully repaired after running DFA repair several times, the directory problem is substantial and the options are using a more substantial disk repair utility such as Disk Warrior (not sure if DW has been updated for a Mac with an Intel processor or not) but if so, there is no guarantee but DW has been known to work miracles or reformat the hard drive HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled and then reinstall OS X and all included software.
You can call AppleCare but they will have you or your friend run DFA repair and do the same. Unless there is hard drive damage that is covered under warranty, there isn't much else AppleCare can do and hopefully your friend has/maintains a backup since this is a good example for why maintaining a backup is so important.
