I am helping a disabled person with a printing problem involving a Macbook, an Epson SX218, and MS Office for Macs. The Macbook had been recently updated to OS X 10.6.8, and the printer driver reinstalled, by an Apple store. She complained the printer failed to print about every fifth line. It turned out there was no problem at all with printing web pages and emails, but only with Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). I updated
Office. Later all lines were printed, but imperfectly with a bit missing from bottom of every fifth line, as though the printer had missed out a pass, so I am not sure the Office update is what made the difference. I am not at all sure whether this problem arises from the Mac or the printer or Office.

It looks like that the installation process of one of the applications have caused some trouble. One of them may have changed or added kext files.
For that, the Window server crashed if you try to open a non Apple application like Firefox
Start the system in safe mode by holding the shift key on power on.
If save mode is reached, perform a permissions repair with the Disk Utility.
Don't bother about upcoming warnings like "could not repair file xy" as that occur cause you use the tool on a running system and opened files can not get touched by the tool.
After repair is done reboot system to normal and try to open Firefox.
If the problem persits, please report back here.

That file could be set as a Launch Agent or Daemon in your ~/Library or /Library, You could try to look for it or Safeboot your computer and then empty the trash. SQL 2012 SP1 - How to determine a query that causes Error 8623 in SQL Log: The query processor ran out of internal resources and could not produce a query plan. This is a rare event...

We are getting multiple 8623 Errors in SQL Log while running Vendor's software.
How can you catch which Query causes the error?
I tried to catch it using SQL Profiler Trace but it doesn't show which Query/Sp is the one causing an error.
I also tried to use Extended Event session to catch it, but it doesn't create any output either.
Error:

According to your error message, about which query statement may fail with error message 8623, as other post, you can use trace flag 4102 & 4118 for overcoming this error. Another way is looking for queries with very long IN lists, a large number of
UNIONs, or a large number of nested sub-queries. These are the most common causes of this particular error message.
The error 8623 occurs when attempting to select records through a query with a large number of entries in the "IN" clause (> 10,000). For avoiding this error, I suggest that you could apply the latest Cumulative Updates media for SQL Server 2012 Service
Pack 1, then simplify the query. You may try divide and conquer approach to get part of the query working (as temp table) and then add extra joins / conditions. Or You could try to run the query using the hint option (force order), option (hash join), option
(merge join) with a plan guide.

Connected wirelessly to Canon printer MX340. Duplex printing option is grayed out for me but not on my daughter's non-Mac laptop or husband's PC which is connected to the printer. Mine has two-sided option available at the Apple store. Any ideas?

We use a Canon MX340 series printer/fax/scanner. My husband has his PC hooked to it and my daughter prints wirelessly from it with no problem with her non-Mac laptop. I have trouble printing. Often it does not print and I have to delete the job from the queue. Other times it will print OK but two-sided printing is always grayed out in my printing options. When I took it to the Apple store and printed on their network (selecting their printer) the two-sided option was available. Makes me think the printer is set up wrong, but I am not certain. A fw times at home when trying to print I got an error message about incompatible fonts, but it printed anyway after deleting the job and starting over. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

OK, just an update.
Two years into this, I still find I can only do full duplex printing by using Windows XP running inside of VMWare. I've had occasional, ephemeral luck with duplex printing, but nothing long lasting.
I've tried this in Tiger and Leopard (now at 10.5.6), and I've had this issue with Canon printers MP780 iP4300 and MP610, direct connected to my Core2Duo 17" MBP. I also have this issue when printing over a network, but that's a much harder problem to solve.
Currently, this is my #1 most pressing issue for my Mac, because not being able to print from a computer when you print a lot is a really big drag, and using VMWare all the time is also a really big drag. Other people posting seem to be able to print in Duplex using the very same printers. What could be wrong with my MBP? I see the duplex box option, but most of the time it's grayed out as if my printer doesn't support duplex.
I've tried direct selecting printer drivers from the system preferences, but nothing seems to have an effect. And this is off of a clean Leopard install.
My wife now has similar problems with her new MBP - the Canon print drivers (CUSP & non CUSP) aren't allowing the Duplex box to be checked.
I am willing to pay good money to anyone who thinks they can fix this problem.

Is there a way to retrive my old apps on my ipod that I lost now that I resored is to original settings and they had updated. It would let the apps back on my 2G ipod that I had because they are now not compatable with the softwear!

I have now learned that our 2G IPods will not update any further to the latest ISO. but now that I just rebooted my son's Ipod he has lost a LOT of apps because they are no longer compatible with the softwear version on the IPod! Is there a way to get these back???

the old apps are on my computer but they have had upgrades since they were put on the ipod originally. you think you would get a warning about this when you restored. I was not worried about losing the progress of the apps but i would have been worried about the app it self!!!!!

Can I get back the original filename even though the file is missing

I imported 900 RAW images from my desktop into Lightroom, edited them, renamed the filename, and exported them into JPGs. Since I no longer needed the RAW images on my desktop I moved them over to an external hard drive. So now the images are still visible in my Lightroom catalog, but there is no photo to back it up since I moved the original files to the external hard drive. After realizing that I exported the images at 150 dpi instead of 300 dpi I need to re-export the images from lightroon at the proper resolution. But since I moved the originals to the external hard drive there is no photo to back it up in lightroom anymore. So I went to locate the files by clicking on the "?" but since I renamed the file when I exported them, the original filename on the external hard drive is now different from the filename in the catalog. Is the only solution to locate the file one by one? Is there any way I can do them all at once even though the original filename is different from the filename in my lightoom catalog? The original filename is still listed in the metadata, but since the originals are missing it can't change it back. Please help!

It sounds as though you moved the files and renamed them outside of Lightroom. Not a good idea. I'm not really going to answer the question about retrieving the files. But if your only concern is the resolution then I wouldn't concern myself about changing the images. That resolution setting really has no impact or effect of any kind on your images. It doesn't change the size, or the quality at all. If you have an image that is 2000x3000 pixels (for instance) it will be that same size regardless of what the resolution setting is. The only real value that setting has is to give another user an indication of the intent for the image. When you look at an image in Photoshop and look at the image size feature, Photoshop will tell you the dimensions of the image at that resolution, but that doesn't change anything about the image.

My 2 airport express units have worked until now. I only play Itunes on them and have reconfigured them, done hard resets on the expresses and the extreme, built new networks and started all over. when I can finally see them in airport utility and make sure they are connected to my network I still can't play them in itunes. I can select them, but the error message is that the network connection timed out. Used to work just fine. Its gotta be a setting, but I can't figure it out. I tried to change the channels, but it isn't very intuitive. Airport Extreme is channel 11, one of the Airport Express' is channel 1, and the other is 50 something. (I can't pull it up in airport utility, even though it shows green light and appears on my ipad.

I updated today to v. 18, and while my menus do pull down (for both the firefox one of the left and the bookmark one on the right) and the links work, the... image file, I guess, is very glitchy. I only know what I'm clicking on because I know vaguely where things are in the lists.
I have updated Java (which has now disappeared from my plug ins list), put firefox into safe mode and then activated one extension at a time to check them, and restarted both my laptop and firefox a few times. While in safe mode this glitch does not occur.
Is there any way to correct this? I have screencaps I can provide showing exactly what is happening:

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I have had my iphone 5 for 13 months now and have always had the same car charger (not an apple brand). I recently downloaded the latest software update and now all of a sudden i keep getting the message that my charger isnt supported by my device.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? Im seriously considering getting away from apple as bad as I hate too. 'moving images' are created by projecting frames so fast, the human eye gets tricked, not to notice a slide-show but … a movie.
a TV, esp. the old tube ones, 'write' a frame onto the screen, line by line (a frame is made of pixels, in rows and lines - take a very, very close look of your screen)
the picture on the TV is shown for about a 1/30th of a second, a camera is able to record, letssay for example sake, a 1/60th = only half frame is 'seen'/recorded.
.... it's never a good idea to record projected movies, not from a projection, not from a screen - you should synchronize both devices - which is for normal people like us impossible.

I recently purchased an iMac, learned the hard way that iDVD is not loaded, tried to copy iDVD from my MacBook but came up short. Each time I launched iDVD I got a message that I have no Themes even though the Mac I took it off runs just fine.

Tried to load iDVD from my MacBook onto my new iMac but keep getting a message that it can find any themes. iDVD runs just fine in the MacBook but for some reason when I copied it from the MacBook using a flash drive and download it on the iMac the themes went away. Suggestions?

The themes, when installed, will be in a Themes folder inside the HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD folder. Check there and when you find it copy it to the same folder on your new Mac.
Then go to iDVD's advanced preference pane and point iDVD to the location of the Themes folder:
If you can't find the Themes folder on your old Mac you can do a custom install of iDVD and its resources from the disk that came with the old Mac. It will look similar to one of these:

Installed Lightroom CC. Seems to be working. Not able to sign in the LR modile. Signed out and signed in from Help menu on CC....No Sync icon appears next to collections. The upper LHS where LR CC is shown it is still asking me to sign in. I do not get response when trying to log in ...any ideas ?

They just said in the keynote address that ALL Apple engerneers are at the roll out of the new prodcuts being announced and Apple will be closed for the rest of week.
