MacBookPro 17'' 2009, frequent Crash/Freezes after regular shutdowns, etc.

Hi everybody!
My Situation:
MacBookPro 17'' Mid 2009
OSX: 10.6.7
Boot Camp: 3.2
Windows (on Boot Camp): W7 Ultimate 64bit german SP1
all SW and drivers updated as far as possible.
Since almost after the start of using Windows 7 I experiences frequent Blue Screens restarting the computer into Windows, even after regular shutdowns, but mainly after Stand-bys and Power Save (Ruhezustand) status.
Recently the harddisk has been replaced, since the system was totally corrupted (even OSX was not any more startable). But I still have the same problems. :-(((
Sometimes Windows claims, that the BIOS has to be updated, somtimes it claims memory has to be checkedö sometımes other errors are presented. But memory checks shows no problems and there is no new SMC firmware version available by Apple for this 17'' edition since its release (SMC EFI 1.8).
After several, at least 5, total reinstallations of Mac OSX, updates to the latest versions, reinstallations of Windows 7 (by Boot camp), updtes t0 its latest editions (W7: SP1 and aditional udates, BootCamp for Windows 3.1 and then 3.2) there are no improvements, but a huge frustration :((((
The funny and even more frustrating thing is that exactly the same OS setup, but just running on a MacBookPro 13'', shows no problem at all?
So I wonder, if there are any others out there experiencing aquivalent misbehaviors and if there are really not any updates available for the SMC firmware?
I would appreciate any kind of responses, even, if you are only able to complain the same bad experiences at least, since so far, I got no real answers despite several visits at Apple's Genuis Bar.
Please Help!

It is strange the both computers exhibit the same behavior, so I would think it would be something installed on both. I don't know what it could be, though.
Bootcamp shouldn't be causing that.
Create a new user on one of the machines and operate out of that login. See if the problem persists. If it doesn't recur, then we can isolate the problem to your user accounts and not the system itself.
Does a crash report get generated? Look in the Console app. Check the Diagnostic and Usage Messages. Also, look down through the list of logs and see if there is anything for CrashReporter or Hangreporter. Look for anything with Finder. I'm not sure what to look for in the logs. If you find one that occurred because of a crash you are talking about, then copy it and post here.
Edit: Also look for crashlogs for the programs that are crashing. I hooked in on the save dialog, tying it to Finder, but it is more likely tied to the app itself.

  • Logic pro crashes / freezes after running about a hour after updating

    Hope anyone can help me.
    I use G5 powermac.
Had 10.3.x running with Pro6 with no problems (because of that I'm a big mac fan
I updated to Pro7.2.x and also to OSX 10.4.8 when the problem started
It's a strange problem, it seems something happens in my computer after a period of time.
Logic is always crashing / freezes after working with it for about 1 hour (not sure exact time). When I just leave my mac on for the same period of time not running logic and start up Logic later it also freezes imidiately. But only logicpro seems to have this problem. All other programs working well.
I need to restart my computer to start working again and then again after a period logic crashes again. I also installed logic express but express works well.
I already reinstalled everything a few times and also working with just the basic (no plugs, interal audio, no hardware, no extra memory ect.) didn't help. I did changed discdrives, internal memory ect.
Hope anyone has an idea what it can be
    Thanks for helping

hier you will find the right downloads for the firmware update for the late 2004 g5 1.8. choose the right updater for your system.
it should also appear if you use the software update.
after that it should work like before.
    hope that helps

  • Frequent Crashes/freezes iMac OsX 10.7.5

    Hello.
    I Have an iMac:
Processor  2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
It freezes regularly (every couple of weeks) and the only thing I can seem to do is to shut it down and boot again.
I did a memory test with memtest86 but it showed no problems.
Below is a copy of  a System Diagnostic Report I found in Console.
Any ideas what the problem is and what I can do about it.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best Wishes

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Blue screen, crashes, freezes after ios 7.1 iphone 5s

I've been using iphone 5s 64gb A1530 starting December 2013 without any problems. But after updating to 7.1 I faced blue screen crashes and freezes.
    Few sort of problems:
    1. blue screen appears then goes to gray and iphone falls asleep.
    2. blue screen appears then restarts then blue screen then restarts and loops until I will be successful with soft reset.
I've been googling a lot for this problem and the solutions I tried didn't help:
    1. I switched of iCloud data copy.
    2. I restored from backup iCloud.
    3. I restored from backup iTunes.
    4. I restored as factory (unfortunately it still comes with 7.1)
Nothing did help. Could you please give me advise how I can downgrade back to 7.0.6 or 7.0.5? Such resets are really annoying (over 20 times per day)
In diagnosis part from Preferences I have a lot of kernel reports. If there is any way to heal my iphone or it's time to trash it?

Finally Apple replaced the device with the new one. Service guy in Apple store tried to recover it from DFU mode but failed.
I got no idea what ios7.1 brought to my iphone that after 4 months of normal usage it became a blue screen piece of metal. And maybe another app or virus crashed the hardware.

  • Ical and other applications crash/freeze after upgrade to tiger

I upgraded to Tiger over a year ago, and this problem has persisted since then. I haven't had time to fix it, but I really miss ical and the other programs that crash.
    This is whats going on:
my ical, mail, ichat and address book freeze upon opening, or open and then crash. None of these programs work. I have tried all of the trouble shooting articles on the website. I have reinstalled tiger (twice) using archive + install.
I have also created a new user account, and i did not experience the problems on that account. So, i know it is my user account. However, I don't know what that means, and I don't know what i can do.
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. I can try to post the crash reports (if someone would find them helpful and can tell me how to find them..)
thanks again for any help, I really appreciate it.
    Kate

  • 2009 Quad MP freezes after waking from sleep

    Hey again.
I've read numerous reports about the sleep/waking problem but mine seems to be different. I even created a new main admin account to see if some of my preferences (I migrated my user accounts from an iMac over to the new MP) and still having the same issues.
If I let the system go to sleep it will on its own but when I wake it up the keyboard and mouse don't do anything. I even unplugged the mouse/keyboard and plugged them back in and still nothing. I have to hold the power button down to shutdown. Upon restarting everything is fine again.
Now if I put the system to sleep manually it will sleep and wake perfectly!! I know I can work around this by not letting it go to sleep on it's own but why would be wake from sleep one way but not the other?
    Any help welcome.
PS. I have a OWC 1TB FW800 hooked up, Wacom tablet/pen, keyboard and that is it. I have the hard drives set to 'sleep', and only have istat menu bar running. I've tried it with that off and no programs running and still have the same results.

but after I bought this MP it's been headache after headache. (Sleep issues, monitor issues..)
Are you still under warranty? Can you have the machine replaced? I would try to do that... No reason for bad experiences from a brand new machine. No one deserves that and you may just have gotten a machine by nature that is a bit buggy. Granted the dust is still settling about these Macs and how they play out in the real world. But consistent problems like yours, are worth fixing. Getting the Mac replaced would be ideal.
JM is probably right about the driver, I forgot that too. One removes everything except the kernel of trouble in the first place. It's a shot anyway. There could be more going on.

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Spinning Beach Ball then frequent crash when editing movie

Help! I have tried everything; the project I am working on is about 14 min. long, still pics only, with transitions; I had extracted the audio from the clips (a trick I learned after trying to export movies previously) and now when trying to delete the audio extracts, I get looooooooong hang times, and frequent crashes. Also, frequent crashes when just updating transitions, etc. Any suggestions? I have to have this finished soon, it is an anniversary video for my niece's folks.
    Thanks

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]
    Macbook Pro
    15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009
Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software:  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • Lots of crashing, freezing, and strange lines on screen after recent update

I dutifully update the software when asked and suddenly I have all the following symptoms. Any advice? Thanks!
    AD
    1. A small line appears in some windows; it's multi-colored and about 3 pixels high. It goes away when I resize or play with the window.
    2. My computer crashes more often when being woken up from sleeping by pressing the mouse button; I will press my mouse to wake up the computer and it just shuts off. This has happened for the past year but happens much more frequently this week after the recent update. I took it in to the apple store months ago and they could not repeat it. It happened 3x today.
    3. A few programs have frozen / stopped responding, way too more frequently than normal.
    Thanks!
    AD

Hi again Andy, I don't make it over here to Leo very often.
    Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Leo clears a lot more caches than Tiger does in Safe boot.

  • Frequent Crashes after upgrading to ML (Macbook Pro 15" 2010)

I have been experiencing numerous, frequent crashes ever since upgrading my computer (Macbook Pro, 15", 2010 model) to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. The crashes appear to be very random; they don't happen at startup and aren't associated with any particular application or action. For example, I once experienced a crash while opening a file in VLC. After restarting, I was able to use VLC without any problems, and instead experienced  a crash when opening a bookmark in Safari (which wasn't a problem earlier). In all cases, the screen turns black for a second and then the computer forcibly restarts.
Below I have pasted the details of the error report that the computer wants to send to Apple. I've had nearly 20 of these since upgrading on Wednesday night, and I don't know if they are all the same. But hopefully someone can help me here; I don't know how to interpret this log in order to pinpoint what is causing the problem. This looks a lot like the "kernel panics" that others have reported, but I just don't know what that means or how to fix it.
Also, I ran Software Update and am currently up-to-date.
    Thanks so much,
    Anthony

Gaming apps freezes for few seconds , then resumes by itself or crashes sometimes ,after upgrading to iOS 8.3 on iphone 6

Update: my phone's connecting to the WiFi again. I don't know what did the trick. I did nothing since reinstalling the software. It hadn't worked then, it is now. I tried connecting to my dad's phone's hotspot( he uses a Moto G), and it worked. I then tried connecting to the WiFi at a friend's house, and when I came back home, my phone was able to connect to my WiFi! Is it of any significance that my friend's router doesn't require a password? My issue has been resolved( for now; I hope I'm not counting my chickens before they've hatched). For anyone facing a similar issue, I suggest you try everything I did:
    1. Turn your router off for a minimum of 30 seconds, turn it back on and try connecting.
    2. Click on the WiFi network you are connected to, scroll to the bottom, tap "Renew Lease".
    3. Do a soft and hard reset.
    4. Reset network settings.
    5. Back your data up, erase all content from settings menu, restore from backup.
    6. Reinstall your software( put it in recovery mode).
I am not sure which of the above worked for me. Make sure you try everything. If none of the above works, take it to a genius bar or an authorised service provider. Good luck! :)

  • Why frequent crashes after iso5 update on ipad1 and iphone3gs

After I updated to iso5 my ipad1 and iphone3gs are experiencing frequent crashes. I find that my wife's iphone4 and my daughter's 4s are working flawlessly.

I just purchased a brand new MacBook Air
I would recommend walking it directly in to the nearest Apple Store and logging your issue with staff there...don't wait.

  • IPad crashing and freezing after 8  ios updates

My iPad 1 has been crashing and freezing after completing the most recent ios updates, what could be wrong?

Can there be any person who can say that Apple treats customers as valuable persons ?
Way how IPAD 2 users are treated, served and issues solved shows clearly how they just care of new purchases. All crashes, slowness, battery consumption, extremely bad user experience with slow and jamming UI etc... Anyway this is over now with me as I'm moving out from IPAD / IOS due this experience. Ride was a good but now its over as trust is totally destroyed by Apple.
