MacBookPro 5,2 17", CPU underperforming
My MacBookPro, a Unibody 17" recently slowed down so much it was unusable. I upgraded to OS X Lion and thought that would help with the problem but it didn't.
I've done everything I could find, repairing permissions and verifying disc, cleaning up and doing maintenace with Onyx, Apple Hardware test, reinstalling Snow Leopard, reinstalling Lion, erasing Harddisc, reinstalling time after time and it all works okay just really sluggish
I finally got Snow Leopard to work a bit but when checking the Activity Monitor I noticed that only 15% max was used by the CPU. No matter what I was doing the CPU was between 80-90% idle
This could explain why my Mac was so sluggish, my Wacom Cintiq tablet frooze regularly, preview colomn in Finder took forever to show a simple 50 mB Tiff thumbnail and my Illustrator files took forever to open. There were apparantly no other programs draining the CPU, just a large part not being used at all.
After my final reinstalling of Lion and starting up with the Activity monitor on, I noticed uses up to 90% of the CPU. This was with the basic apps that come with Lion. As soon as (re-re-re) installed Adobe Creative suite it went back to 80/85% idle.
I've scanned the software with Sophos Antivirus and nothing was found.
As I live in Egypt, popping by a Mac Store and asking what's wrong is not really an option.
Can any of you more experienced Mac users give me an idea what to do?
I can't go on using less than a fifth of my processor and I can't repair permissions and empty caches every few minutes.
How can i kick my processor into working properly.
Thanks in advance
Hello again,
i change the SSD to HHD old. And the problem is totally solved.
Some idea? SSD not work well in Yosemite?

0 B Page-outsI uninstalled all of the Intego products. I restarted the laptop, also ran disk repair and permissions repair again. Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

MacBookPro 15" CPU whine: how to test, samples as .mp3
My W8614… MacBook Pro 15" still has the CPU whine, both with the power adapter plugged in (lower volume) and unplugged (higher volume). It emanates from both speakers even when the speakers are muted (volume zero).
My guess for the root cause is not separating analog and digital circuitry
properly.
I put up recordings of the CPU whine at
http://www.heusser.com/pub/macbookpronoise/noiseonbattery.mp3
The Utility SystemLoad (http://www.bresink.de/osx/SystemLoad.html) will
play the scale on the MacBook Pro by loading the processors
http://www.heusser.com/pub/macbookpronoise/noisebatteryscale.mp3
I will try to get it replaced under the 14d DoA policy.

HOW TO DISABLE CPU behavior when no battery inside macbookpro ?
I realized, when i do not have the abttery inside the macbook, what i do not fotne, to save chargecycles, that my cpu wil not go above 1ghz. i observed this with the use of the coreduotemp application, wich can be free downloaded and monitors temperature and cpu speed of your macbook. i wrote to the developper, and he confirms that observation, so it is not an software bug.
First, i invite you to test this on your macs and report, and secound i would like to have a solution, i bought this mac for power, not for slow power.
maybe someone knows how to disable this behavior, thxIf your MBP is consistently running at 80°C or higher, there is probably a problem with it... My machine idles around 54°C (when connected to an external monitor -- less without) and maxes around 75°C when the processor and GPU are being pushed (i.e. video intense gaming).
Additionally, the MBP's battery is not Lithium Ion -- it is Lithium Polymer -- and is designed to be used IN the laptop. You are worrying about nothing (or next to nothing); even if your theory is correct, you are perhaps talking about a 5% decrease in the overall lifespan of the battery...if you think that is worth the possibility of data loss, then I guess running without the battery is for you...
However, you will not be able to disable the down-throttle of the CPU speed. -
MacBookPro CPU temperature is over 90 degrees while playing video
Hello
I have MacBook Pro (details are on the screenshots). When it plays video CPU tempriture goes over 90 degrees and fan makes big noises. Is this normal? or should I change speed of fan and make it faster for better cooling?
Thanks
George90c during video playback is fine. If your temperature went above 100c, I would start to get concerned.

MacbookPro High CPU, Power Drain, and Heats
Hey. I have just noticed my Macbook Pro has some problems: it has a high CPU usage, high energy impact, and high temperature.
This still happens when the laptop is idle. The temperature's around 70Celcius. In activity monitor, it doesn't show any apps using significant energy, but you can see a drastic battery drain.
I've attached some images.
Thanks for any help!
IanIan,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller? -
I am consierding updating my old 2009 MacBookPro which is just used as a desk top and am interested in finding the answer to the above question.

Help! MASSIVE MacbookPro ISSUES with all mac softwares - diagnostic report incl.
Hello all,
I have posted something almost 1 year ago but never got a reply.. The issues became so bad lately that even checking emails becomes a performance (for my nerves..)
My computer is a Macbookpro from mid-2012 OSX 10.8.5
bought in 2013, in france (azerty keyboard)
(NOTE: I'm french, so some of my terms might be a translation of the error messages i get in my descriptions)
The 2 browsers I'm using (ideally in parallel) are Safari & Chrome, I have their latest versions for both ot them
The programs i'm mostly using are : those 2 browsers, textedit, itunes, sometimes preview and rarely iphoto (but nowadays, only safari and textedit, as every click already takes up to 40sec...)
Here are the issues I'm experiencing daily:
- Any click, any command takes a min. of 5sec to be fullfiled - sometimes up to 30sec - be it wanting to switch from one progr to another or turning the volume up/down via the keyboard)
- Rainbow ball spinning at almost every click i make..
- When i open a finder window, it takes min. a few seconds, up to 10sec for its content to appear
- If 2 finder windws are open, sometimes clicking on one of them does not put in the front (the other window remains, overlapping the one i'm selecting though)
- same thing happens with a finder window and itunes
- Pages on ANY browser take sometimes up to 40 sec to load
- Chrome gives me all the time the message that "the pages so and so won't respond" and that i can either "wait" or "close" those windows.. waiting moslty won't help.. - i have to quit the program.. wich mosly doesn't work.. so i try to force quit..which also sometimes doesn't work..or only after several minutes...
- When opening a progr. in the dock bar, the prog icon keeps bouncing over and over (takes between 15sec-1mn for the program to open, nomatter which one)
- Lately, when reopening Chrome, some tabs are missing : not being retaured, they are just ..gone.
In SAFARI:
- as soon as not ON a tab left open on browser, the page is first completely WHITE (takes up to 30sec for content to appear)
- Safari "force reloads" all page and tabs open several times a day, lately directly after restarting the browser
- After force reloading, the page happen to be blank, and/or no address in the url bar : i have to click the "back" arrow, in order to make the url reappear,
-..but sometimes even this isn't possible, though the name of the page is still showing on the tab window
- After a force reload, pages such as youtube display as a simple text content - have to REload for the page to display properly
- Computer often freezes sometimes completely,
.. and the mouse disappears
.. sometimes so hard (rainbow ball spinning non stop) that i can't force quit, not even shut down properly (exit through the "physical" start button as only chance)
- Computer sometimes freezes but by making a restart on his own : screen becomes blue, grey, everything disappears, big start button symbol appears on screen with message in several languages and computer restarts on his own..
- Dock/program bar sometimes won't show up.. all i can do is restart the computer
- Force-Quitting programs can take up to 2 to 10 min until the force quit window appears...
- Computer generates aliases or copies (?) of documents, that can't be open anyway, adding things in the name of doc such as "NAME.rtf.sb-0352fd77-9bU6Yb"
- Bottom line : Mac softwares (and NO other!) crash or freeze on regular basis (such as : textedit, safari, iphoto, preview etc.), they mostly show not to be responding in the force quit window
...But sometimes, one of these programs won't respond BUT no sign of it in the force quit window
- Dashboard always takes 10 to 40 sec to make information/content appear
ISSUES that occured ONCE lately:
- was looking for files via the search field of the finder, it worked normally until it became all blank and nothing, not a single file would show - had to restart computer
- could not make a copy-paste anymore from one tab to my tab with gmail account - had to restart computer.
Desperately trying to improve if not solve those problems I happen to do more and more often those things:
onyx automation and clean
erasing cache in chrome and safari
checking the disk with utility disk (always says it's all fine!)
repairing the "rights" via utility disk progr.
(if i happen do it every day : i happen to have an endless list each time of repaired issues)
I also start the computer with cmd+alt+p+r.. never changed anyhting
I recently did the SMC restart.. didn't change a thing
I'm desperate !
Bottom line : those problems occur ever since 2 months after i bought this computer (new!), giving it for repair 3 times and deinstalling + reinstalling the whole system 5 TIMES NEVER changed anything.. Even partitioning the disk, by following someones advice didn't change anything.. As a matter of a fact, the problems are recurrent and only becoming worse and worse...
Last but not least, it's been 2 months now that the trackpad is "dead"..i can't press it anymore and have to use the "finger tip" mode or whatever it's called..
Thank you for taking the time to read, I'd be super grateful for any help!

Understood. But if I really want the iCloud contacts to synchronize with the contacts "On My Mac", do I have to manually copy and paste (or drag) in the Contacts application? Is this really the definition of "synchronization" ?
Again. The 'On My Mac' account is a local account, it's on your Mac (hence the name) but not anywhere else.
You may be trying to sync it to iCloud but you will fail, put the contacts where they need to be, if you want them distributed by iCloud they will need to be in the iCloud account.
One simple way to move them is to export the On My Mac account to a vcard file and then import the vcard file into the iCloud account (do all this in Contacts, not the website)

Yes to the first question and as for the second, if you didn't have iCloud where would you keep your contacts? -
I have a MacBookPro that i use for DJing. I frequently get the spinning colorwheel. How do i stop that from coming up so often. I've increased my RAM from 4GB to 8GB. My original 320GB HD was replaced by a 500GB HD at the Apple Store when the original one failed. At this time I cannot upgade to OS X Yosemite, until my DJ software is certified to run on it. I'm running OS X 10.9.5 right now.
I saw in other posts a link to EtreCheck to get info from my Mac. I've pasted it below.

Mail is using 100% CPU processes - wondering if I possibly have the answer?
Hi...
I have a big problem with Mail using all the CPU processes but may just have found a possible solution. I'm posting to see if anyone else shares this problem or can shed some light on whether or not this is a possible solution.
_*The Problem*_
Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that Mail is using on average 100% of the processes and sometimes up to 168% (I have screenshots to prove it). My 17" MacBookPro gets very, very hot and the fans spin up to cool it down so it's obviously not right as it's never done this before. I can only use Mail intermittently now as the machine overheats quickly soon after Mail starts up. As a result, the CPU is being hammered so I can't now use Mail or other CPU intensive applications properly, which is a big problem.
I've used the iStatPro widget to verify that Mail is constantly using 100% of the CPU processes. I've also verified this using Utilities / Activity Monitor. When the Activity Monitor application loads, I've selected Mail from the list of Process Names and then clicked Inspect. I've managed to identify the parent process as being launchd (110) which is using all the CPU power. Here are some other stats for this parent process:
%CPU 95.56 (at that specific instance)
Threads 15
Ports 275
CPU Time 3:30.55
Context Switches 310968
Faults 65795
Page Ins 1
Mach Messages In 272627
Mach Messages Out 65025
Mach System Calls 1459878
Unix System Calls 103120
I guess the important bit is the first bit that says 95.56%.
I have screenshots to back this up but no way of posting them here. I have also managed to use Activity Monitor to generate sample data that the process is creating and again there is no way of posting an attachment here but there is lots of sample data from the process to look at. I've compared the sample data from my MacBookPro to a colleagues machine and the difference between the sample data is enormous. There is obviously something very wrong happening.
Here's some basic info about my machine, with the serial number removed:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP21.00A5.B08
SMC Version: 1.14f5
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55)
Kernel Version: Darwin 9.6.0
Boot Mode: Normal
Time since boot: 1:44
_*The Possible Solution??*_
I recently installed a Beta version of Daylite 3 as I was interested in the application and remembered that it integrates closely with Mail. I wondered if Daylite was constantly trying to communicate with Mail and having problems. Having uninstalled Daylite 3, the problem of Mail using all the processes has so far not reappeared. Mail is now using very little of the CPU processes as is usual. However, I'm currently at home instead of on my network at the office so I'll wait to see if the problem still fails to appear when at work.
I know other people have had problems with Mail using 100% of the processes. Have you also installed Daylite 3? There has been some talk of Flip4Mac being a possible culprit but I use Flip4Mac and haven't previously had the problem. The only recent change and connection I can think of is an install of Daylite 3.
I don't want to talk down Daylite 3 but it's the only thing I can think of and having uninstalled it, the problem hasn't occurred. I hope I have stumbled across the solution but any thoughts, shared experiences or feedback would be greatly appreciated...
Many Thanks,
NigelHi...
Thanks for the post. Not sure what you mean when you say "What does Mail say it's doing?" Can you be more specific and supply specific instructions to follow so that I can give you the information you need?
I've sampled the process but can't post any attachments on the forum. I've listed what the Activity Monitor stats are saying at the top level in the post above.
This is a serious problem that's hammering my machine and making it overheat and almost making it unusable. Any feedback or instructions anyone can give me for what info to supply to help you determine what the issue is would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to find a solution here rather than have the machine overheat permanently and eventually fail, leaving me to sort it out with AppleCare.
Help!
Clown Guy -
10.9.2 update bricked my MacBookPro
All was well running OS 10.9.1 on my 2007 MacBookPro with Core2Duo processor.
Then came the OS 10.9.2 update. First it caused the crash report function to peg the CPU, running more threads until it topped out at 8.
Repaired the disk permissions twice. Rebooted gracefully several times. But the new problem persisted.
Finally on the seventh reboot, the system reached the login screen. I could not finish typing a password before a hard hang left the system entirely unresponsive. After a few minutes, I forced a reboot with the power button.
Now the system is bricked, all thanks to a poison update.
The question is how do I get past this poisonous update, which seems to have impacted the firmware as well, because now the system will not boot from known good alternate boot media.Thank you Bob. I should have tried harder to get the MacBookPro to respond to boot-time keypresses. It took several tries to force firmware to boot from an alternate OS image on external drive, but when that finally worked, I realized that the OS 10.9.2 upgrade damage was limited to the OS boot and recovery partitions on the internal SSD
I'll conceed that OS X is not my first & best platform, and I force OS X to coexist in a corporate ecosystem dominated by Linux and Windows.
Likely third-party drivers clobbered by OS 10.9.2 which ran fine up through 10.9.1 include:
1. remote video projector link provided by AirParrot since Apple does not support AirPlay in the OS on my older 2007 MacBook Pro despite having dedicated GPU that's capable.
2. third-party NTFS to get complete functionality
3. third-party WiFi drivers for spectrum analysis
4. third-party tool to force OS X to support TRIM on non-Apple SSD.
The freshly installed image of OS 10.9.2 thats working now on the internal SSD will be replicated to external drive prior to installing any of those four items. -

Hi all,
my macbookpro is been running slow and having problems for a while now, I've reached the point where it makes it really difficult to work, perhaps the fact that I've a large amount of data on my disk could be parlty the problem. I noticed another thread where they've been use etercheck tool in order to pinpoint issues and get some support so I was hopefull that someone would kindly give me some feedback, here is my report:

3.70 GB Page-outsYour Mac has been running for 23 days and since you have 4GB of RAM it may help to reboot once a week or so. Quitting browsers occasionally may help too.
You have 3GB of 'Page-outs' (in the Virtual Memory Statistics). This suggests you have run out of RAM at some point & the OS had to move the info onto the disk - this is a slow process, so you either need to run less apps or install more RAM. Cleaning up old apps may help reduce the amount of RAM you need, so run EtreCheck again in a week or so & see how the 'Page-outs' are doing.
Your boot disk is getting rather full, its is a spinning hard disk, so the performance will decrease the more data you store on it. The data fills from the outside edge towards the middle of the disk, the outside is fastest. If you can free up more space that can help you get better read & write speed. A 1TB disk will perform better with your ~460GB of data. I'd also back it up and boot from recovery mode & verify/ repair the boot disk http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
Another option is to clone the disk to an external & then restore it back onto the the system - this effectively 'defragments' the disk, just have several backups if you plan to do this.
Check that any Huawei software is up to date - HWNetMgr and HWPortDetect are installed as startup items. If you don't need them look for uninstallers or instructions on Huawei's site, it's best not to load items into the system level if they are not needed
Virtualbox looks like it may be from last year (version 4.1.14), it is loading the extensions into the system, so it's important to update it.
See if your login items are causing issues…
Logout of your user account (in the Apple menu)
Log back in, but hold shift as you press the login button. This will disable the login items in your user account. If the Mac is better like this you know you need to remove or update login items.
Running uTorrent as a login item may use system resources that could be used elsewhere.
I'll mark this up like the other reports & add an explanation of the sections below the report.

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).
Blue items are loaded at the user level
Pink items are to get attention :^)
Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/
Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/
Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.
Launchd jobs: several types
LaunchAgents - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
LaunchDaemons - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…
[loaded] - a running job
[not loaded] - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)
[failed] - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.
User login items:
Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.
These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot. When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.
3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:
/Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.
Ask if any of it needs clarifying. -
After upgrade to Maverick, my macbookpro sometimes will shut down without notice then restart again. During restart it says I have some error so it is shutting down. Dunno what heck is going on here. It has been like this after I updated to Maverick.
What happens? So regret to upgrade to Maverick.
Any help is much appreciated.

some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect.
