MacBookPro does not start in Single User Mode

I am trying to boot my MacBookPro in Single User Mode. I read I should power off computer then start it while holding Command-S. I don't know what I am doing wrong but whenever I try, Mac just load normally and load the system.

Nevermind, seems to be working now!

  • MBP only runs if I start in single user mode and run fsck. WHY!

I am having trouble with my MBP. If I don't start in single user mode and run fsck -fy twice, I can't click on anything with my trackpad. I can't even log in. I've tried resetting pram/nvram, disk permission repair too but once i reboot... nada. I can't do anything in recovery mode, I can move around with arrows and tab but can't select anything. Safe mode hangs at about 20% and doesn't budge (left it for an hour, nothing). If I run fsck -fy it works but as soon as I reboot/ logout i'm back to square one again. Anyone know what causes this to happen? It just started tonight. I have a 2012 15" with Mountain Lion.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Can not startup in single-user mode

I can not get my MacBook to startup in single-user mode. I am holding Command-S at startup but it starts up normally.
I also tried starting up in verbose mode by holding Command-V. That didn't work either. I then used the Terminal command to make it start up every time in verbise mode. That worked but I don't really want it doing it every time.
So then I thought it was because I have a firmware password set. I then started up holding the Option key so I can enter the password. The password field popped up as it should, I entered the password, then held down the Command-S keys to startup in single-user mode. No dice.
Can anyone tell me why I can not get single-user or verbose startup modes working?

Because entering the password into the Startup Manager doesn't disable it or any of the other functions it provides. You need to use the Terminal method or take the password off.

  • Impossible to boot MacBook Pro Retina ! impossible to start in single user mode, Openfirmware password set, but safari works!

I have got a Macbook pro retina.
I have done 2 partitions on the SSD drive. 1 for the OS and 1 for the user (with a kind of ln -s /Home/myself /Volume/Part2/myself
I was watching a movie (with VLC) in full screen for a while and I wanted to escape. Impossible, and impossible to reboot.
When I start, I have a directory with a question mark.
I have a Open firmware passwords set (that I remember).
I cannot reset PRAM. (I can not change the RAM amount inside the commuter as this is a retina model)
I cannot start in verbose mode.
I can choose a disk to boot. I see only the OS drive and not the user partition, and no 'recovery partition'. It seems that i need to do a fsck -yff on the user partition but how ?
I can start the OS partition, and i can choose 'guess' or 'myself'. If i choose myself, I have an error message :'there is a error, the session can not start'. If I start with the guess account, I restart, and then I can browse the internet with safari (this is how I am writing this text!)
=> How can i repair the partition ? (open a terminal, boot in single user mode ...?)
    best regards.

Actually, the recovery partition was there, but was not shown as my user partition. I have seen that reseting the PRAM and changing the ram could remove the open firemware password. So i have turn the computer on until the battery was empty. Then I boot about 20 times, and unplug the power supply after few seconds at different step of the booting pricess. At last, the screen default resolution when booting changed, I undertood that i succeeded, and I was able to enter.
Then I boot in single user mode, removed the open firmware password, activated the root user,  and everything was fine now !

  • Unable to start in single-user mode - HD dead?

My MacBook Pro (Mac OS X) refused to start, it hung up on the loading screen where you see the apple and the spinning loading wheel. I found out how to fix this, I had to go into single-user mode and type "/sbin/fsck -fy" to repair/verify the disk (I was unable to do so from the Disk Utility via the Install Disc, the repair/verify buttons were just grayed out).
Anyways, doing this from the command line (single-user mode) fixed the problem and I could boot into Mac OS X (there were more issuses after this point which forced me to do an "Archive and Install").
^ that happened a week ago. And happened again yesterday, hung up on the exact same point. So I boot up my Mac into single-user mode, and type in "/sbin/fsck -fy" to start the process. Different from last time, I got a lot of text this time. It also kept going for a longer while. After about 10 minutes, there was a couple of minutes where nothing happened. So I typed "/sbin/fsck -fy" again (as I'm supposed to do so until it says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK"), and I got some more text, then nothing happened for a while.
Inpatient as I am, I considered the process to be complete, and restarted my Mac by typing "exit".
I think I ****** up my Mac OS X partition at this point. Because when I try to start my Mac now, it automaticly boots into Windows XP (my other partition). Also I cannot enter single-user mode or Verbose mode, the Mac just ignores and goes right into Windows XP.
I've tried to boot from the Install Disc. When I run Disk Utility, the "HD"(name of Mac OS X partition) is grayed out. I can't do an Archive and Install because it cannot detect my main partition.
An interesting thing though: When I have the Install Disc inserted, I can enter single-user mode (by holding cmd+s at startup). However, when I type /sbin/fsck -fy, it starts verifying the Install Disc rather than the HD.
Also when I open My Computer in Windows XP, I can see the other partition (MacDrive). When I select it, I see:
    Free Space: 219GB
    Total Size: 168GB
This indicates that my HD is dead/erased, and that my last three months of work is gone. This just because I'm impatient, and didn't wait for the fsck process to complete.
What is the next step? How can I get into single-user mode so that I can verify/repair my disc?

On the point of contacting the folks at Alsoft, I have found that they seem to be unobtainable on www.alsoft.com at present.
I wanted to get in touch as I had a small problem with Diskwarrior on updating to 10.5.5 from 10.5.4 ,
Disk permissions ends with an error code.
I wonder if there were so many queries re this that they are unobtainable?
I run 3 machines from a wireless router, an iMac, an HP laptop with XP and a totally obsolete Dell into which i have squeezed W2000, with a resultant mix of browsers but no contact with the folks at Alsoft.
Am I in a minority of one here?

  • Outlook 2010 -Mailbox Cleanup wizard does not start when using cached mode

We are using Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2003 server.
Currently all users are using online mode, but for some problem, I need to persuade the users to change to use cached mode.
Recently we find that when user
mailbox reaches its size limit and try to send an email message in Outlook 2010 that is in cached mode, the email message stays in the
Outbox and the Mailbox Cleanup wizard does not start. It just prompts
for "send and receive error". As most of the user would not look for what the error is referring and just call IT to fix. Even worst is, they didn't realize that the mail is still in outbox.
I find the KB2544027 describing this issue but was not available and suggest to install 2596485.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2544027/en-us
I've try to install the hotfix and install Office 2010 SP2 but just doesn't work.
Does anyone know how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Based on my research from the internal resource, this issue has been fixed in build 14.0.6126.5000 or less. I suppose that the hotfix not available because it has been involved in the release.
I’d like to confirm your Office 2010 build number so that we can conduct a deeper analysis on this issue.
In addition, make sure you have installed the latest update for Office 2010.

  • Can't start in single user mode, trying to fix blue screen startup

Trying to fix my blue screen startup and I'm on the step to fix the Network Preferences and I'm suppoed to go into single user mode. It starts but then locks up. last line is: localhost:\ root# Anyone have an idea?

    Hi David.
Sorry we haven't received any response yet. getting used to the new forum is occupying a lot of peoples time at present I fear. I've yelled a bit louder this time!
In the mean time, have you already tried starting up in SAFE mode, rather than SU? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 and following the other processes identified in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
If you have access to another firewire equipt Mac then you could also use Target disk mode (connect the two together with a firewire cable, then start up your own computer while holding down the t key. ) Your own HD would then appear on the desktop of the other computer as another HD, and you can then proceed to remove or shift the same .plist files (on your own HD) identified in point 4 or 5 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
    Cheers

  • Macbook won't start in single-user-mode.

I'm trying to repair the disk and instead of booting in single-user mode, it boots up regularly, ignoring Command + S. I'm running 10.6.8.

  • LXDE panel menu does not display in regular user mode

    Hello All,
Running arch on eeepc 1000HE.  Running openbox with lxde.  The menu on the panel does not display when in a regular user mode, but does display when in su mode.  The button for the menu displays but when pressed the menu is blank.  It seemed as if the /usr/share/application file was not being read properly so I changed the owner to my user to see if it was a permission issue.  That did not help.  I have not yet seen a problem like this on the web.
    Let me know,
    Brad

grey wrote:I don't think the LXDE menu can be edited - it's generated autmatically from the desktop files.
It can. The configuration is in /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu. You can also copy that file into ~/.config/menus to keep your modifications local.
This brings me to two suggestions for you brahan: Check if you have a ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu, and delete it if you do. Then restart lxpanel. The other thing, check if you have /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu and what are it's permissions.

No matter what I do, it does not show anything in the display. Indeed I tried to plug a HDMI cable to try to watch the info in a TV with out succed.
When I turned on the POC, the famous "shan" sound appreas but there is no image in the display.... The light of the secure botton is on !! so it is constant on...
What  might be happen here!! my PC was running well

The only practical alternative is to have the MBP shipped to the nearest Apple repair facility.  I suspect that will prove to be very expensive.
You may investigate if there are any competent local Apple repair technicians.
    Ciao.

  • Active Sync does not start as domain user with no Administrator rights.

    Hi all,
Searched the forums and the net but can't find anything about this.
    Situation:
In a domain where users only have standard users rights I installed on a PC as a domain admin Active Sync 4.5
When I logon as a user the Active Sync software can not be started.
I disabled the firewall and even set full rights permission on the Active Sync directory both didn't help out.
When I m logged on as this user I can choose to Start the program as a different user.
This only works when I Start it with the domain administrator account.
I hope that I do not have to give that information to this user to make this software work.....
Anyone had the same problems? Anyone a idea?
    Thx in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Aartjan

    try this:
    1. make sure you install "activesync" from local harddisk (not from network), and do not delete the setup file after
    installation
    2. local in as "local administrator" and connect your PDA and make sure it can sync, I did not create a profile and just leave PDA connect as "guest" for now
    3. log off and re-login as "domain user", connect with USB should work
    4. if they still cannot communicate, run "ActiveSync" from start menu
    it works for me

  • IMac does not starts once on sleep mode after last Mavericks update... Anyone with the same problem?

Since the last update, when my iMac goes to sleep mode it seems that the mouse or the keyboard can wake it up.  I have to do a "hard reset" everytime.  Anyone has this type a problem?

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
    Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, if any. Be sure to disconnect all USB hubs. If you use a keyboard or mouse plugged into a hub, plug the devices directly into a built-in USB port and remove the hub. Test.
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator for this step.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for Diagnostic and Usage Messages. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.) Select the last few messages that appear, if any, and copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • Restarts in single user mode since install

    Hi,
I've only seen this problem on one of my computers. Since installing SL (from family disk), when restarting or starting from full shut down, the MBAir starts in Single User mode with command lines. I actually think it showed the GUI for about 2 seconds then goes into the command line text. Shows a bunch of the usual stuff about MAC framework initiations and lines about kernel dependency. I don't see any error lines repeated (but I do not understand much of the code) and it does not offer me a prompt. After about 1 minute, it launches the OS X gui and everything else is fine.
I updated the 10.6.1 - same problem persists.
So far I've verified, repaired some permission, PRAM, and tech tools basic. Do I need to do some deeper investigating? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    bc

Will do. Do you mean re-choose the start up disk from the sys pref? Why might it search for another start up disk?
resetting PRAM clears the startup disk settings.
