speaker on phone calls will not work, how can I fix this? I have already done system restart and reset to manufature default. I also have no voice with Safari or any other apps including music!

If your speaker is broken, then you may need to get a repair done.
Are you unable to hear anything at all, or is it just one speaker in particular?
If it is just one speaker, where's it located?

iTunes is required to initially activate the phone. Back when the iPhone 3G was sold, you would take it out of the box and see a "Connect to iTunes" screen. She HAD to connect to a computer in order to begin using the phone. Does she remember what computer this was?

a 1.5gb update cannot be considerd a minor updates. a prerequired check of all necessary hw would be considered a starting point not a surprise at the end of the process!
How do you suggest this hardware check should be done? "OS" stands for "operating system," the software that runs the computer. The computer of necessity relies on the OS to do its checks. If the OS on the Mac is damaged or the drive needs to be reformatted to correct errors on it, how do you expect it to be able to use its damaged software to check for any damage to its own hardware?
Macs have a very limited hardware test built into their firmware called POST, for Power On Self Test. As the name suggests, this runs every time you power them up. But it can only check for gross errors, & can't check the OS software at all (because that software has to load & run the tests).
Apple provides a more extensive way to check for hardware problems known as the Apple Hardware Test, but for reasons that should be obvious from the above, it has to be initiated by the user. Likewise, Apple provides a way to test the hard drive for errors (Disk Utility), & for the same reasons it must be run from another start up volume (like the system DVD) to repair the drive normally supplying the OS.
Apple also provides Safe Mode, which loads only the essential parts of the OS from the start up drive. But it isn't magic -- if any of the essential parts of the OS have been damaged by file system corruption, it too will fail to start up the Mac.
The bottom line is Apple can't possibly provide any comprehensive way for your Mac to predict how a perfectly good update would react to existing hardware or software damage on it. That is something you must learn to do, especially if you rely on it for any professional purpose.

  • 24" iMac don't restart!

Hello, I run a data recover data program last night. This morning the computer was on the screen saver mode but when I restarted it, nothing happened. I just have the Apple logo with the gray wheel or simply a white screen with a DON'T sign on it (a circle with a crosed bar).
Please, I need help urgently, does anybody knows what should I do to fix this problem?

    HI,
Sounds like the data recovery program might have generated an incompatibility issue.

  • SMF - start at boot time, but don't restart - possible?

I'm setting up a software package that has a number of background processes.
I've got SMF manifests created and imported for all of them, and they're working great for starting the processes at boot time, and doing the automatic restarts when one fails.
Here's my problem. It turns out that the users of this software want to be able to use the software's integrated process control methods to stop some of their processes. With the current configuration, they use the software's method to stop one of it's processes, and SMF promptly restarts it.
Is there a way to set up SMF managed software so that SMF starts it at boot time, but then doesn't care if stops later?
    Richard

I'm not sure how it would be SMF "managed" in such a case. Obviously you want the management to be elsewhere.
You could use the "legacy" startup scripts in /etc/rcX.d. That will start a process and forget about it, just like pre-Solaris 10. You don't use manifests or have any other benefits of SMF.
If you do want SMF, I guess the question is how you want it to act..
When the users stop the processes, do you want SMF to say enabled or disabled? SMF does not track enabled processes by periodic polling, it does it by tracking contracts. This means that starting a process outside of SMF does not allow SMF to track it.

  • Macbookpro Keeps Randomly Restarting

    My Computer's Details - http://pastie.org/private/u9w6mgnlzbafxcil31l1w
Hello, I recently have been on my MacBook Pro and two nights ago while I was closing a application my computer randomly restarted and I thought that it was kinda weird while it was restarting it asked for my password, I typed it in and it restarted again before my computer even fully loaded. Then when I woke up the next morning I opened my laptop and it restarted and said "Your Computer Restarted because of a problem" so it's been restarting the whole day yesterday and today, and another thing that makes it restart is when I plug my Iphone 4s into it. Here is the message
"Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."
once it opens it restarts again and then I get this once it opened fully - http://pastie.org/private/edlnqjczaw0oaptamtn3g
If anyone knows the problem please help me it is getting very annoying.

    Hello!
What's happening to your Mac is called "kernel panics"
They can have many causes. Often they're caused by connected peripherals. If you have any connected, including external display, disconnect them. See what happens with a barebones MacBook Pro with other words.
Secondly, you have these non-original kexts/drivers. If we manage to get you back into your OS X again, you must consider deleting the ones below:
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
    com.microsoft.driver.MicrosoftMouseUSB 8.2
    com.microsoft.driver.MicrosoftMouse 8.2
    com.sophos.nke.swi 9.2.50
They can be found at: "/library/extensions"
If your issues aren't solved by disconnecting peripherals, here's my advise. It's a bit lengthy but might just save your day:
It will take you about 45 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is as well as your internet-connection speed.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Internet Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully. Make a back-up anyway.
    Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [alt] + [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you see a spinning globe with the text “starting Internet Recovery” You might have to connect to your Wi-Fi network before you can continue here.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Internet Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk] unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.

I really have had a problem with Firefox responding sluggishly for the last 6 months or so. I have difficulty opening it, closing it properly, freezing up. I don't have this problem with other programs, so don't know what is going on. Also I can't use my latest version....10 of Adobe Acrobat now. Dont know if that is my computers fault or Firefox. You bought a new machine that has a new operating system 10.7 and the third party program is tailored for the previous OS X version of 10.6
Try to find out if there is a update for 10.7 for your third party programs.
Right now all you can do is apply Software Update under the Apple menu for OS X and wait for updates, contact the developer when they expect a update.
If your experiencing shutdowns with other high CPU/GPU programs, it could be something wrong with the machine itself.
Perform a HardWare Test you may have a dead sensor or fan.
Install iStat and monitor your machine for unusal behaivor, post your results here for comparison with others.

Boot the computer holding the Shift Key down for "Safe mode" this disables third party kernel extension files (.kext) that load upon boot. Look in your system/library/extensions folder for names of kexts files that correspond to any of your third party software and/or simply check for updates for all your software. If none, consult the developer which kext files to remove out of the folder.
If you have perhaps bad RAM, test using Rember extended overnight.

  • I am having difficult problems with the FocusritePro14 it works for a few then the firewire light flashes it cuts in an out then my MacBookPro crashes and restarts what can be the problem?

I am trying to figure out why this interface never works like it should, I have the lastest drivers 10.8 OS, The firewire cuts in an out and then crahses my computer, it was working fine for a good month, and then it does this. The people at Focusrite are clueless to what is going on. This is horrible engenerring  on there part. There are three lights on the interface they all light up, then half way through a recording or just lisiting to music, the FW light flashes and cuts out, and now the mac is rebooting when it does that. I highly doubt it is a simple fix, or a bad wire. I have the original cable for the interface that came with it, hooked up to a sonet adapter to fit in the macbook pro because the geniuses at apple decided that they would make that port small.
Sorry about mispeling its 3 am here in Ohio.  Please can someone help

  • I have used migration assistant to shift my contents from another Macbook Pro, but are getting an error message 150:30. I have deactivated the software on the old machine and done a restart on the new one, but still get this error message

As above - first time I have used a forum, so thought I had to put all the details into the heading

You really need to reinstall your Adobe apps on the new system to get all the support files in the right place (and with the right permissions).

I turn off or reset (by hold both buttons), when the ipod cames back, it stucks at the page where I entering passcode. The only problem it it did not let me enter anything. I can see the progress circle is still flushing but it seems to be freeze. No matter how long I wait, it wont turn on properly. Everytime I ended up need to restore the ipod. Any help? Thanks

itune does see the ipod and yes I can restore. But as there is so many apps and songs, it normallt takes 6 hours to restore and reload backup.
Surely there is something not right if everytime I turn off (turn off properly by sliding the red button and not force reset). Should I take it back to the apple store? but my ipod is 3 years old so they may not want to know?!

  • Firefox 3.6.10 update won't load on restart (tried many times) and exits after warning to restart again - how to disable warning so don't have to start twice every time I use Firefox?

I regret agreeing to download Firefox 3.6.10 update, as it is somehow corrupted, and will not load when I restart. Subsequently, every time I start Firefox, it warns "Update Ready to Install", then when I don't restart (if I restart, it won't load) it exits, and I have to start Firefox a second time. Then it works without the warning, but when I exit and start Firefox again, the warning returns and the cycle repeats. This is such a nuisance I have gone back (reluctantly) to Explorer. Is there anyway for me to get rid of this corrupted update and go back to before I downloaded the fateful update?
