MacBookPro shuts down at home, works fine at work. What's up?

I have used my brand new MacBook Pro at work and at home. When I browse the internet at home, the computer shuts down and I have to restart. At work, it runs great without a problem. Could it be that the overhead powerlines near my house are affecting performance? That's just one of my hypotheses. Any other ideas?

Overhead power lines certainly possible. Are these high-tension lines? How close to your house?
Other possibilities: perhaps the outlets in your house aren't properly grounded, three-hole outlets -- or they have reversed polarity. You can pick up a $5 outlet test (orange) at Walmart.
Perhaps the peripherals you use at home aren't properly grounded.
Do you have power sags or outages at home? Do your lights dim sometimes? Is there another big-ticket item on the same electrical circuit -- like a frig or a window air conditioner?

i keep the itunes encountered a problem and needs to shut down . it was working fine until after i updated to 10.5 can someone plz help

I did get a "server busy" message when I loaded quicktime, but I'm not sure if it is related or not since I've been seeing that over the last couple of days, I can't remember if it came before iTunes stopped working or not. That message reads "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'switch to' to activate the busy program and correct the problem." My options then are to choose switch to or retry. When I press "switch to" my Start menu opens, and nothing appears to happen when I select retry.
that's an odd sort of a message (or series of messages).
hmmmmm. let's try an experiment aimed at working out if there's a program interfering with the QuickTime (which is in turn causing grief with your iTunes).
try a selective startup using MSCONFIG, with just the itunes and QuickTime background processes enabled, as per the following document:
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows
does QT open without the strange message after the selective startup?
    does iTunes launch properly?

The problem is your friend's music does not belong to you.  It is owned by your friend.
I'm afraid you cannot do what you are trying to do.  Restoring the iPhone is what you would have to do.
In the future, put your music on the computer and transfer it to the iPhone, not the other way.

Note: No iMac PPC is 27".   PPC is for the iMacs that were new until the beginning of 2006.   They are all Intel now.

My i-phone has shut down - will not do anything!! What's wrong??

This question really belongs in one of the iPhone forums. https://discussions.apple.com/community/iphone
But... my iPhone acted like this once after I dropped it.
First, make sure the phone has some charge in the battery. Plug it in and let it charge for a while if you haven't already done that.
Then try doing a reset. To reset the phone press both the Home button (on the front of the phone) and the Sleep/Wake button (on the top of the phone) at the same time. Keep both buttons pressed for at least 10 seconds and see if the phone will restart. In my case the reset did the trick.
If that doesn't work you might see if anything else here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1 is useful. If you still have no luck try asking your question again in an iPhone forum above... or visit your local Apple Store.

when deleting find i phone app i erased my apple id and since then my phone shut down as soon as it is opened what can i do ?

    Do the following:
Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

  • MacBookPro shutting down at error since upgrade

Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday my system shuts down and restarts when it comes across minor errors, such as non-responding app that take a while to unfreeze - esp if I am on VPN remote for my work. This never happened before. It gives no warning, the screen goes black and the computer restarts.I do not get to save anything I am working at the time it happens, so it's very aggrevating.
I am thinking it has to do with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I might be wrong, of course.
Anyone know why this is happening? And how should I prevent it?
    I have a MacBookPro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 Mhx DDR2, OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.
I hadly have anything on my laptop, I store everything from music to photos to documents in my external HD, as not to bog down my laptop.
    Any help/insight would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    M.

I haven't had this problem until recently and I recently calibrated my battery.
Look at your system logs in your Console application for any clues.
Looking at it logically though, I would say it's a battery issue seeing it was working fine before calibration, and it doesn't shutdown on the AC adapter.

  • Why won't my MacBookPro shut down?

My 17" MBP works fine, but 2 nights ago it started to refuse to shut down, and it continues not to shut down and not to restart. It does, however, go to sleep.
I'm concerned, and would like to fix whatever is wrong without bringing it to a Mac store, if possible.
    Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for your input!

book2: My money is on the printer as the culprit. Make sure you have nothing queued up for printing when you shut down, and also make sure you have the latest Canon driver version for your printer.
There are still some USB devices and drivers that interfere with sleep, and perhaps with shutdown, by sending a very brief "Hello? Are you still there? I'm still here!" signal to the computer at regular intervals, in some extreme cases as often as once every second. A computer that is constantly plagued with such activity on the USB bus may never be able to carry out a Sleep or Shut Down command. Your printer or its driver software may be indulging in this kind of misbehavior, in which case it's no surprise that disconnecting it it before trying to shut down is an effective workaround. (Just turning the printer off might or might not do the same.) A newer driver version, if there is one, may remedy the problem, or it may not.

  • Macbookpro Shutting Down Unexpectedly

    Hello
I have a problem and was wondering whether anyone could help me solve it.
Sometimes when I am using my MBP's battery (not plugged in to the mains) the computer shuts down randomly. The battery has been on under 30% every time, but I haven't recieved the "you are running on reserver battery power" message.
I haven't had this problem until recently and I recently calibrated my battery.
When I switch the computer back on, it goes through the normal booting up thing, it doesn't seem to be going to sleep.
My mac's one year warranty ran out in July and I have had no problems with this at all until now.
Does anyone have any ideas? I don't live near an apple retailer so I would have to phone them I guess.
Anyway any help would be brilliant.
    Alex

  • Satellite P10 - start up/shut down are not working

I hope someone can help me. My Satellite P10 is having problems starting and shutting down.
When it starts up, it goes to a black screen with white wording, asking if I want to start windows normally, or in safe mode etc - it won't let me start it normally so I choose the option 'last good start up files' (or similar wording).
The pc then carries on starting up. I did a system restore but it's made no difference. Once it's started up, it's a lottery whether it's going to be ok, or whether it's in the process of crashing.
To shut down, I've got to push the off button, there's no other way it will shut down.
I've run avg, spybot, lavasoft adaware, xsoftspy, registry mechanic, spywareblaster etc but there doesn't seem to be anything 'wrong'.
The only thing I've installed recently is the new avg 7.5 and legacy family tree software - I downloaded both programmes from the manufacturers sites. Avg is free, although I might just have visited a crack site for the code for legacy :)
I would really appreciate it if anyone is kind enough to give me some advice :)

    Hi Joao
I have had a bit of luck so far - I downloaded a little executable which checks for trojans - I had been infected by ntrootkit. I managed to get rid of it (switch off system restore, run security software, edit registry & reboot) which has in turn sorted out the start up and shut down problems.
However, I'm still getting problems - when I start up, it's in the lap of the Gods whether I need to reboot before I can open my broadband software.
Also, when it's playing up like that, I get a 'beep' when I try to stop processes through task manager. I've got a horrible feeling that it's the motherboard. Once I've rebooted, it's fine again.
This is driving me nuts... if anyone has any ideas on this latest development, I'd be grateful!!

  • Shut down does not work win 8

I have been trying windows 8 enterprise evaluation version for about 3 months and I've experienced problems with shutdown.
I hoped this problem would be solved with the official version but it seems that I was wrong on that point.
I frequently couldn't shut down my laptop. I press alt+f4 on the desktop or go to the settings charm to turn off the laptop and whatever option I hit there nothing happens, except for log off and sleeping mode.
Then I have to manually turn off my laptop. I had it often with the evaluation version. And yesterday it happened with the final version, which I bought, too.
Specs of my laptop are: Acer Aspire 7530, AMD Athlon 2.10 GHz, 4GB RAM, 32 bit win 8 pro.

thanks, I'll give it a shot next time it happens.
but that won't solve the problem! there must be some error in the code which microsoft should deal with!
edit: it didn't work either :(
    Hi
This issue may be caused by compatibility problems with the Fast Startup component.
    Perform the following.
    Open
    Control Panel / Power Options.
    Left side menu, select
Choose what the power buttons do.
    Select
Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    Scroll down to the
    Shutdown settings section.
Remove the check mark from the
    Turn on Fast startup option.
    Click the Save Changes button.
Test to see if this resolves the problem.
    Regards
