MacBookPro shutting down at error since upgrade
Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday my system shuts down and restarts when it comes across minor errors, such as non-responding app that take a while to unfreeze - esp if I am on VPN remote for my work. This never happened before. It gives no warning, the screen goes black and the computer restarts.I do not get to save anything I am working at the time it happens, so it's very aggrevating.
I am thinking it has to do with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I might be wrong, of course.
Anyone know why this is happening? And how should I prevent it?
I have a MacBookPro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 Mhx DDR2, OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.
I hadly have anything on my laptop, I store everything from music to photos to documents in my external HD, as not to bog down my laptop.
Any help/insight would be appreciated.
Thank you!
M.
I haven't had this problem until recently and I recently calibrated my battery.
Look at your system logs in your Console application for any clues.
Looking at it logically though, I would say it's a battery issue seeing it was working fine before calibration, and it doesn't shutdown on the AC adapter.

Computer randomly shuts down/Very unstable since upgrade to yosemite
Since upgrading to yosemite my computer has become very unstable.
For anyone that can help with what may be causing this issue I would really
appreciate it. As for "Adobe" being a possible cause, how can I determine
which Adobe program and related files are the culprit?
Thank you very much to anyone who offer's their support and help.

Feb 9, 2015, 05:23:10 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/mdworker_2015-02-09-172310_[redacted].crashA number of problems exist including the likelihood of system corruption as a result of using CleanMyMac.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Besides CleanMyMac2, garbage "cleaning" and "anti-virus" software exists, specifically "Avast", "Smith Micro", and "Symantec / Norton". Those products should not be installed on any Mac, because they convey no benefit and are only capable of creating or contributing to problems.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. -
Media write error since upgrade to mountain lion
9 out of 10 burns result in "failed due to a media write error" since upgrading to Mountail lion. Have also used a wet system cleaning disc that usually does the trick for my CD players. Have tried much slower write speeds - no help there.
Hello there Chamie7,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
I would recommend this troubleshooting from the article OS X Mountain Lion: If an error message appears while you’re burning a CD or DVD found here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10868
Use blank discs that are rated for the burn speed of your drive, or consider using a different brand of disc.
Specify a burn speed that is lower than the maximum speed rating for your optical drive.
Quit all open apps you’re not using.
Restart your computer and try burning the disc again.
If your startup disk is nearly full, try to free up space on it. The amount of free space on the startup disk needs to be greater than the amount of data you’re burning. Erase unnecessary files. Back up files you don’t use often, and then remove them.
Repair your startup disk with Disk Utility. For more information, see this topic in Disk Utility Help:Repair a disk
If needed you may also want to reset the SMC on the computer as well.

Formerly, an e-mail with a website, photo, etc. attachment that I opened required only that I click close tab return to my e-mail message. Since upgrading a few days ago, the only option present is to exit, which now requires re-opening firefox then my e-mail browser. Any website I am examining that I want to close automatically exits me from Firefox.
there should be an X on the right side of each tab. clicking on it should close that tab

Since upgrading to Lion on my iMac, I keep getting the following Pop up image error message. Translated in English it reads: The connexion to the server has failed. URL type files are not recognised.
Curiously enough, I upgraded my iBook with Lion also ... and I don't get this problem at all ! It does not cause any trouble, everything is working, BUT it is a Royal pain, as I have to click on OK twice to shut it down and it comes back up again every 10-15 minutes !! Can someone help ? Thank you.

IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard
My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
Thanksrk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out. -
Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade
Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.
Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?
Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.
Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Hello hotdavesweet,
It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.
Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.
It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.
Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should. -
Phone crashes/shuts down using apps since I updated to iOS 5.1
I have an iPhone 3Gs 16GB running iOS 5.1.1 build 9B206. (my daughter has one as well and is having the same issues.)
Since the upgrade to iOS 5 we have experienced the phone being shut down (crashes) while using them. At first I thought it was due to low battery, but it does it at full charges as well. It does it more specifically with apps that use a lot of memory (or refreshing of information online), such as maps, weather, facebook, etc.
Anyone else having this trouble? Should I revert to an earlier iOS?Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these steps in order until the issue is resolved.

Raph from Brusselsnana4design,
some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect. -
My ipad has been locking up and shutting down when I'm using the internet. Went to do upgrade 6 and Ipad froze wanting me to plug into itunes. I hooked ipap up to my laptop to do upgrade, but the ipap was still frozen, I had to restore to factory settings, unfortunately I have lost my pictures. Is there anyway to get the pictures back?

Look at original question. When I did the download to the new 6.0 it said everything was fine. Then when I tried to use the firefox again it said an older version needed to shut down my computer so that it could upgrade the old version. It wont let me do anything and all it says is shut down computer so old version can upgrade. It wont let me open the program or remove it or anything. PLease help me with this. I really like Firefox but this has been going on for 5 months now and I still dont get answers from you. How do I fix this???

Flash error since upgrading to latest Safari
Hi everyone,
Since upgrading my browser a couple of weeks ago (Safari 6.1.2) on my Mountain Lion, I have two very infuriating problems:
The first is a persisitant error message that pops up on most web pages I go to - telling me that www.facebook.com detects that my flashplayer might be out of date. (I do not even have a facebook account - so this is looking a bit dodgy?) I get 3 popups for each page I open, which I then have to acknowledge to proceed. Upgrading Adobe Flash player & restarting has not fixed the problem.
The second problem is that I can no longer do a google search from the address bar - it gives me a cannot connect to the server error - I have to go to google home to do all my searching now....(google is still ticked as default search in preferences)
Any ideas? Is this a problem with Safari software, or is something malicious going on?
Thanks for your help!!1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; AC="com.autodesk.AutoCAD com.evenflow.dropbox com.google.GoogleDrive"; H='^[[:space:]]*((127\.0\.0\.1|::1|fe80::1%lo0)[[:space:]]+local|(255\.){3}255[[:space:]]*broadcast)host[[:space:]]*$'; NS=networksetup; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; AT () { o=`file -b "$1" | egrep -v '^(A.{16}t$|cann)'`; Ps "${1##*/} format"; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; [[ l -gt 25 ]] && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"[$((l-25)) more line(s)]"; Pm "$1"; AT "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$/d;s/^ */ /;s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g;s/(ochat)\.[^.]+(\..+)/\1\2/;/Shared/!s/(\/Users\/)[^/]+/\1-/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ ! Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Help, I can not quit safari or shut down my computer since updating to Lion.
Can some one help?
Since updating to Lion, I can not quit Safari or shut down my computer.Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual.
