Macbookpro - which os?

hi all,
do i have to upgrade from tiger 10.4.11 to snow leopard before i upgrade again to the latest lion os?  will the processors in this macbook (core duo 2), handle a newer os?
~ tj

I can't find any instances of it being done, though with enough skills/money many things are possible, but most Notebooks have the CPU soldered to the Logic Board, as well as many generations of CPUs requiring a whole new Logic Board to handle different CPUs.
If you must run Lion in you estimation, then the cold bottom line is to sell this one & Buy a newer MBP, or a used one that has Core 2 Duo CPU & can handle at least 4GB of RAM, (16GB would be better for the future, though I've read a few complaints that 16GB isn't really enough in some circumstances).
I see no need for Lion/10.7 here, but then I think the iCloud is the worst invention since Carter's Little Liver Pills, & do more important work in TOS 1.04/2.06/3.06, OS 7.5.5, OS9, OSX 10.4/10.5 than in OSX 10.6.x & beyond.
Disclaimer: I have no Cell Phone/iPhone/iPad, would only use MobileMe if they paid me big time, (soon to be unusable anyway when the Lion roars), also I find that if there's ANY other APP that does what an Apple app does, it's better, more useful, & isn't nearly as often put to the wayside as Apple's whims do with theirs.
PS. One positive note about Apple is that they continue allowing me to post things as I see them, which is rarely flattering to Apple, so I keep trying to help users here!

your new lion-machine should have quicktime 7, too. if it doesn't, and if it doesn't show up after you migrated your stuff from you old machine you can always reinstall it from the logic dvd's, it's part of logic. my recommendation is to always use quicktime 7, since it's got many features that are absent in quicktime x. quicktime x is nothing but a polished video player. in quicktime 7 (pro, comes with logic) you can even do edits and paste your music onto video files. i use it all the time, especially since logic 64bit doesn't export to video anymore.

  • How can I get a copy of mountain lion for my mac book pro on which I already have mountain lion 10.8.2 installed

I have a MacBookPro which came installed with Mountain  Lion10.8.2.
My Mac Book pro does not boot, not even in safe mode. It boots in Recovery Mode, and I tried to reinstall it and it says downloading and it shows that it will take 258 hours. I cannot wait 258 hours, is there any other way
    2. My brother got me this Mac between December 2012 - January 2013 from Australia, I live in  India, How do I find out if I am in warranty. Can I call any number. I have an Apple ID with me which I just created and I have the serial number with me but I do not know the exact date of purchase.
Where can I download or purchase a copy of Mountain Lion? is there any other site other than Apple?
How good is Maverick, Can I upgrade from Mountain Lion 10.8.2 to Mavericks. The local service center did not bother to verify the warranty and told me to pay 2000 rupees. I thought the warranty to be worldwide, apparently not, any suggestions.
If I have no warranty I would still want a DVD of Mountain Lion since I can do the install myself and do not need to pay 2000 for installation. There is no data to backup. I would really appreciate any help here.
    Regards

You can go to the Apple online store and purcahse a copy of Mountain Lion.  This will give you a redemption code, which you can use to download Mountain Lion from the App Store.  Unfortuantely, I'm not aware of any other way to legally purchase it.  I have never seen Apple release Muontain Lion on DVD.
In terms of Apple Service, they just need the serial number of the machine to check the purcahse date.  It is usually correct, to within a few weeks.  A quick Google search should give you the correct number to dial.
    I hope this helps.

  • I bought a MBPro which came with Lion installed,i also wanted to have a copy of installation disc so i used mac app store.Normally if an app is already bought there is a warning or a sign that informs the buyer.I've charged for this download is it normal?

Hi ,i bought a MacBookPro which came with Lion installed on it (i have registered my mac book pro right after i bought it), i also wanted to have a copy of the installation disc in case of a crash, so i used mac app store to get it.Normally if an app is already bought (for iphone app store) there is a warning or a sign that informs the buyer, than the app store lets the buyer to re-download/re-install the app.I've charged for this download afterwards, because i was using virtual credit card, there was not enough money transferred to that card during that download but the app store let me download it anyway. I haven't charged before the download, the app store first let me to download it then it requested that amount of money for next download wich it was a free app. Can anybody enlight me? thanks

    Hi ...
i also wanted to have a copy of the installation disc in case of a crash
If you have problems with your Mac you use Lion Recovery
However, you can create your own installation disc >  How to create an OS X Lion installation disc | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews
Since Lion came pre installed on your Mac, the App Store doesn't not recognize that as a purchase so you if you want to re download Lion to create a boot disk you will have to pay for it. You can then re download Lion on all your authorized Macs for free.

  • How to install OS in a new HD from iMac to a MacBookPro without installation disk

Hi guys, please I need some help
I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac.
The iMac is running OK with the latest OS.
The MacBookPro have the HD replaced by a new SSD model from Crucial, because the original was failing...
Now I need to install the OS in the new HD on the MacBookPro (which I already replaced) connected with the iMac via Target Mode (?) without the installation DVD because I dont have it right now.
    How can I do this?
    Thank you

You are going to need the OSX installation discs that came with your MBP, install OSX Snow Leopard from the disc, then update it to 10.6.8 using software update. Then buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and install it.
You may not use the copy on the iMac for this, it is a violation of the terms of the license.

  • Mountain Lion in MacBookPro late 2007

I recently upgraded late 2007 MacBookPro 15" from Snow leopard to Mountain Lion. I am facing frequent Wi-Fi disconnection. Problem is solved however by turning Wi-Fi 'Off' and 'On' again and/or closing Safari and starting Safari again. Mid 2012 MacBookPro which I had upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion is not facing any such problem. Any possible solutions? or should we have to wait for the next Mountain Lion update?

    No, 10.7.5 is the latest.
    Supported models would be:
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

  • WinXP partition size on MacBookPro (Parallels)?

I'm planning on doing a partition on my 250 GB MacBookPro which I am going to access using Parallels while in OSX. In the event that the performance on a particular software is not sufficient I plan on booting into the "native" install of XP for better results.
I plan to store (and access) all my files on (and from) the OSX part of the drive.
    Does this make sense?
Can anyone give me a good idea of a minimum size for this partition if I am running 3d and 2d CAD? Is there a good way for me to determine this on my own?
    Thanks,

    Hi Stefan.
Thank you so much for this technical assistance.
Also, thank you for the advice on MacOSX. I can really use this kind of "tangential" advice as I get started again with Mac. I suppose there is a widget somewhere that I can dock to get to the used/unused size of my partition (particularly as I hack my way through "segregating" information between the laptop and desktop, moving image files off my hard drive which I have duplicated by importing into iPhoto etc, etc...?
Not needed that much. The OSX Finder shows you the free diskspace when opening a window or directly on your desktop right underneath the harddisk icons.
Anyway, am I correct in thinking that the 50GB you recommend is exclusive of actual document file storage? I mean, I can plan to store /all/ my important (actual) documents on the OSX side of the partition, yes? The advantage of using Parallels in this case is that OSX partition and XP (or Win7) partition can "talk" to each other fluently in the dual boot configuration is that right?
I am not that familiar with the file sizes of 2D and 3D CAD files, so I assumed that the 50GB would be including those files.
But tis really depends on your personal useage.
Parallels and OSX can share files through 'Shared Folders' which both can access without problems.
And then, I guess I can add up the file sizes of the software I intend to install - and perhaps double or triple this - to get an idea of how much in excess of the 10GB I will be using to install software is that right?
Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Personal 'mileage' can vary hugely.
Lastly, can you say something about the /difference/ in /communication/ between OSX and Win when in "dual boot" using Parallels and when booting directly into the BootCamp partition? I guess that Parallels lets the two OS's talk to each other "fluently" whereas in the "native" boot into Win you can only read or write - er - Win can read and write from OSX but OSX can't read and write from Win (or the other way around?).
Like said, Parallels uses Shared Folders for easy file access between OSX and the Parallels Windows.
With BootCamp Windows you have to use third-party helper. Macdrive in WIndows to have read and write access to OSX partitions/volumes.
NTFS-3G (as an example) in OSX to have read and write access to Windows NTFS partitions. In itself OSX can only read from NTFS WIndows partitions.
Can you install MacDrive so the two can talk to each other when booting directly into Win??
    Yes, see above.
    Many many thanks,
    Jonathan
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • How do I move music from my iPod Touch to my MacbookPro?

I have many songs on my iPodTouch that were not purchases from the iTunes store. These songs on my iPodTouch were originally on a different computer. They have been erased from the previous computer. I wish to move the songs from my iPodTouch to my MacbookPro.
When I plugged my iPodTouch into my MacbookPro (which has no songs), it started to sync (which I don't want to do). I canceled the sync, and I don't know what to do from there. I kind of want to do a reverse sync or something similar.

Sorry, it does not work that way. Music is intended to go from your computer to the iPod. Going the other way is contrary to the design and is not trivial.
Music purchased through iTunes can always be downloaded again, provided it is still available in the iTunes Store.
To extract music from your iPod requires the assistance of third party utilities. Search Apple Support Communities for recommendations.
Here is an old post. Since it is so dated some of the links may not work:
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

I am trying to update my macbookpro which shows as needing 15 upgrades. when process is completed it asks to for a restart which takes place. once restarted it does not register any of the updates and repeats the process. Has anyone encountered this issue?

    Hi,
The 10.6.8 is listed in the list of updates that need to be installed, but the same issue keeps re-occuring - I click to do the updates, restart the computer as directed, but the update doesn't take place and it's still listed when I go to show the software updates!  Am I doing something wrong?

  • Printers compatible with OSX on macbookpro with intel chip

Can anyone reccommend a printer for the macbookpro which seamlessly prints photos from iphoto 6? I have an HP 8250 and it is a pain and doesn't work.

I've had very positive results with my Canon PIXMA IP8500. Canon put out new drivers very quickly.
I'm getting great photo printing from the MBP, either directly hooked up to the printer or via wireless printer sharing with my PowerMac. Borderless printing works well.
I also like the Canon's double-sided print feature for documents -- saves a lot of paper.

  • Installing Tiger on a Macbook Pro that came only with Leopard

    Hi guys,
Any ideas on how to install Tiger onto a Macbook Pro that came preloaded with Leopard, and only has a Leopard disc?
I've got a refurbished Macbook Pro recently. Realised that one of my application doesn't work, Capture One Pro. Visited Phase One's website and they said it only supports 3.9 and above at the time it was released, which makes it 10.4.10.
Systems in the story below: Macbook Pro Core Cuo. Macbook Pro C2D (new set), Mac Pro, iMac Core 2 Duo
    Here's what I've tried
    1. I've an original disk that came with my MBP CD. When I try to boot from that disk on my MBP C2D, it gives me the crash screen -> "please hold the power for secs to restart".
    2. I've tried installing Tiger onto my iMac and did a harddisk clone via Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to my MBP CD. Tiger was able to run on my MBP CD fine.
    3. Then I tried using CCC to clone it over to my MBP C2D. It doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
    4. I've tried installing Tiger on my Mac Pro. Used CCC to clone over the disk image to MBP C2D. Doesn't work too. Crash screen.
    5. Created disk images of Tiger with Disk Utility on iMac, Mac Pro. Tried to restore using the iMac, Mac Pro disk images of Tiger. Doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
    6. Updated Tiger to 10.4.11 on my Mac Pro. Created disk image using Disk Utility. Restored MBP C2D with it. Crash screen on load.
I'm out of ideas and Apple Support won't open until Monday.
It seems that this MBP C2D is set on not installing Tiger, no matter what. Wonder if getting hold of a Tiger retail disc will do the trick?

You can install tiger onto a MacBook Pro up to version 3,1.
Run System Profiler and under hardware:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1 This line is the model number!
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB

    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version: 1.27f1
    Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXX
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
I have got tiger installed onto this MacBookPro which is the latest 4,1 model, but you require the latest Tiger disk (which the Apple Genius had in my case), but the volume, brightness and trackpad gestures do not work! Everything else is fine.

  • Help with Sharing iPhoto 9.5.1 library between users on same computer

    Hi,
I have upgraded operating systems to Maverick on my macbookpro which also upgraded iphoto to 9.5.1.  Previously in IPhoto I could choose to share the library in each of three user accounts.  The third account was used only for gathering photos to make books, calendars etc.  There does not appear to be a way to do this now.  How do I share libraries on the same computer without creating a library on a separate device?
So frustrating....I was right in the middle of creating a book.
    Thanks for any help.

That particular feature has been discontinued with iPhoto 9.5.1.  However, you  can use iCloud to share photos via  Shared Photo Streams. Each user account will need their own iCloud account and each user can create Shared Photo Streams to be shared with the other accounts.  The photos in the SFSs can be downloaded by any account with access to the stream.
Anbother option would be to create a Dropbox account and when the 2 accouts come across photos to be used in a project they can export the original file to the Dropbox in the account so they can be downloaded into the 3rd account and imported into the project library.
If you have an external HD you could put the project library on it and access it from each of the other 2 accounts. Project photos could be added to that library directly by the other 2 accounts by exporting to the desktop and importing into the projects library with an easy library switch.  Or one can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy selected albums between libraries.
