MacbookPro2,1 Model identifier: what is the latest OSX that is worth running on this hardware?

Hi All,
I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) with few problems. This system seems to be right on the bubble for Mavericks support. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .33-17-specs.html seems to say the hardware was released in between October 2006 and June 2007, too early for the "mid to late 2007" requirements posted here: OS X Mavericks: System Requirements. When I try to update to Mavericks the updater just says "OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer." Since I have 2 GB of RAM and 54GB free hard drive space, I'm assuming the problem is in the chipset of the motherboard instead of the peripherals.
My question to you is what is the most recent/best OS to run on this machine if I want to keep it connected to the interwebs.
Safari 5.1.10 is already on notice by gmail as obsolete, and I'd love to get the benefit of the security patch for BASH.
Thanks!

Rule of thumb is "if ain't broke, don't fix it." I can almost guarantee that if the install sez 'no way' there is no way to upgrade OS.
The problem is not the OS but the load thereon.
First thing, you say "... 54GB free ..." disk space (on the internal HD) ?? OS X needs 10% MINIMUM free for regular duty. The more free the better.
Photoshop is the greedy one of the bunch... Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG text editor, and AI is vector all the way.
PShop needs a lot of scratch space for large OR a lot of images open at once. Default is the Startup drive. I have heard many photo retouch pros state that PShop's scratch should be on a dedicated drive for that purpose only.
What I would do is launch Activity Monitor to the Active Processes pane and occasionally watch how much RAM and VM each are using - don't change your normal WorkFlow until you can get a feel for what you normally consume.
Updating OS X will likely just make for a greedier system before you start consuming assets with Apps.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz 1 GIG Ram, what is the latest OS X I can run?

I have a Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz 1 GIG Ram, what is the latest OS X I can run?  I am currently running Jaquar.  Where can you obtain older versions of OS X?

Actually you can run up to Leopard 10.5. It requires a G4 867mHz processor so you are comforatbly over the minimum specs.
That said, I offer two caveats regarding Leopard that may make Tiger 10.4 more appealing:
    1) Leopard may want more than 1G RAM. With currently available modules, you can take your Max RAM to 2GB. You can install up to 2GB RAM.
    2) If you don't have a video card that supports Core Image, things can be choppy. My 1.25 G4 is a tad sluggish with Leo because I have the original ATI Radeon 9000 64MB VRAM vid card. If you have a Redeon 9600 or higher, you likely have Core Image Support. Use System Profiler to Identify your exact video card. SP is in Applications > Utilities. Select "Graphics/Displays" from SP's "Contents" pane on the left to view the specs of your card in the main pane. It wil tell you if Core Image is supported.
If you can get Leo running fine, it's better in that many programs no longer support 10.4.
Looks like yo uare in the Continental US. Call Apple at 800-MY-APPLE and ask for an operating system specialist. Tell them you need 10.5 to support new hardware. I bought that way in March, and it sounded like they wre going to keep Leo in stock for a whie because of the larger number of olders Macs that can;t run Snow Leopard or Lion.
Be very, very careful of Mac OS software on auction sites. I've seen too many that were improperly described and would not work. Likewise the gray Leopard install disk that came packed with another Mac model won't work.
I just checked--OWC does not list any Apple System software at this time.

  • HT1338 I have a Mac Pro Dual Core, 3 Ghz, that I purchased in the Spring of 2007.  What is the latest OS that i can upgrade to?  And is that OS compatible with Logic 10?

I have a Mac Pro Dual Core, 3 Ghz, that I purchased in the Spring of 2007.  What is the latest OS that i can upgrade to?  And is that OS compatible with Logic 10?

Logic Pro 10 requires OSX 10.8.4, which is not officially supported on your Mac Pro (must be Early 2008).
There are, however, unofficial workarounds to install 10.8 on those older models that you can search for on Google.

  • HT1338 My G5 PowerPC still works great, but what is the latest OS that is possible.  I just bought a new HP Printer and it is not compatible with OS 10.4.  Is there any hope?

A PPC G5 cannot run any version of OS X beyond Leopard 10.5.8.
You should be able to find a Leopard retail (black) install disk on eBay. A grey update disk is machine specific and won't work.

  • HT201364 What's the latest OS that I could have in my MacBook Air from 2006?

The largest capacity HDD that you can install is the HGST 1.5 TB HDD:

Any 2.5" 9.5mm thick SATA HDD will fit and operate in your MBP, regardless of capacity.

  • HT1338 what is the latest OS that my mac supports?

I have a Macbook 2GH Intel Core 2 Duo with a MAc OS X 10.5.8, my updater does not find anymore updates and my computer is super slow, I want to know what is the newest OS that my Macbook supports because I hear it does not support Lion.

You have to install Snow Leopard before you can install Lion or Mountain Lion.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • What is the latest OS that I can use on my 2006 MacBook?

    I have a 2006 MacBook 5.1
I recently purchased and upgraded my computer with Snow Leopard. I want to know how high I can upgrade on this specific MacBook.
I also used Adobe CS5 and was curious if any higher update would affect that program
Last question, do I have to pay for the additional updates?
I could've sworn that Apple told me that once I upgraded to Snow Leopard I could upgrade straight to the latest OS with no additional cost.
If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it.

    If it’s a MacBook5,1, it’s a 2008 MacBook, not a 2006 one, and can run Yosemite.
If it’s actually a 2006 MacBook, its maximum OS is 10.6.8(for Core Duo models) or 10.7.5(for Core 2 Duo ones.)

  • What is the latest version that will work on my "vintage" Powerbook G4 Mac Laptop running the 10.5.8 operating system and where is that download on the Firefox undating site?

The latest version of Firefox is not compatible with my Laptop, and I could not find which of the latest versions I can use.
I was trying to upload the latest version and received an incompatibility message.

A group of Mac users have created their own Community Build from the "Firefox 4+" versions.

  • What's the latest OS that can run on a Blue & White G3 Desktop?

A friend has a blue & white Power Mac G3 desktop currently running 10.3.9. What is the newest OS we can upgrade to?

I know this is an old thread, but Leopard has been installed on Power Mac G3's - only those with a G4 upgrade and the addition of a lot of kexts from developer versions of Leopard and XPostFacto. This is no easy task by far, but it has been done to prove that Leopard can run on Macs without AGP graphics like the Blue and White G3. Here is a link to LowEndMac with an article about it and a link to macmod that is more recent:
    http://lowendmac.com/mail/0807mb/0709.html
    http://www.macmod.com/software-mods/mac-os/1571-leopard-on-pre-pci
This guy at macmod has it running on his G3 Blue and White and on computers even older like the 8500 - with a G4 upgrade of course, and it also seems to be pretty stable. If you are brave, try it!

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD

  • What is the serial number that I need to install this new photoshop product I just bought?

I need help. I purchased a new Adobe photoshop elements 11 from Best Buy and I have all the boxes. I try and install this using the numbers on the back of the inner liner but it keeps saying invalid serial number go back and try again. What am I doing wrong???? JIM

When I bought PSE11 at Best Buy, I think that number on the back of the box (a boxid lets call it) is something that has to be entered into a website to get the serial number.  The instructions, Including any website, should all be there if you have all what was in the box.
Best Buy transmits what boxids have been sold in real-time to Adobe from the cash-register, and Adobe checks the boxid you enter into the website with the list of actual sold boxes they’ve gotten from Best Buy, before they will issue the serial number.
