MacBookPro3,1 - LCD dead, now after 10.6.2 update works again!

About 2 weeks ago my macbook pro 15' with the 8600gt GFX chip started to blink, it would within less than a second go black from the top to the bottom of the screen. After two days of that happening every 10 minutes. Then the screen died completely, the back light still worked but no image on the screen. I took it to my local apple store and the genius told me it was most likely the inverter board attached to the LCD and would cost 310 to fix.
I knew about the Nvidia chip problem and made him check the GFX and according to him it was fine. I have been using an old LCD of mine via the DVI port to keep using my laptop and today i saw that 10.2.6 came out and i decided to update after the first restart my built in LCD came back to life. I am not sure what the update could have fixed but if my screen keeps working it seems that there was something in 10.6.1 that killed my built in screen.
Has anyone else experienced this issue at all with 10.6.1?

I've had the same issue with my MacBook Pro 15". I'm assuming now, it could've been 10.6.1 responsible for "killing" my laptop. One day I just turned it on and the display never woke up from sleep, the light indicated it was asleep. Neither the built-in nor the external display worked.
I've noticed one other thing on my new 13" MacBook Pro. After updating it to 10.6.2 its minimum brightness significantly reduced.
I'm guessing 10.6.2 has something to do with the drivers... Perhaps the previous version of the system had some major issues with them.

Apple removed blood glucose until further notice. The reason behind this is that it gave a distorted picture in countries where the medical world used other measuring units. I suspect it will be available again in a future update.

Just noticed now after 10.4.7 update

With my iBook, HP printers at home that use to work are not now. They show up in the printer ultility. The window opens showing the progress of the print, but never completes the print, just the blue progress line going about half way with the message printing document.
I did upgrade to 10.4.7 from my software updater. Does anyone know it that is a combo update or the stand alone. And if it just the stand alone can I
re-update with the combo. I always run the disk ulitility before and after any update. I am hoping the combo update will solve this. It has been a very long time since I have had any printer problems.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will reset my printer ultility and add the printers I use at home and the office. I did download the current servers for the hp.
Like I had said before I had upgraded to 10.4.7 directly from the software updater. I just finished updating it again but with the Combo PPC.
I will post any results I have.

Get 1.3 from the website if that's what your board came with originally. If it's not, get the one that came with your board. The reason I say that is that is, at least for me, the flashing program says there is a Bootblock Mismatch with all other bios' except what came with my motherboard. ?(
Make that backup disk and remane that bios file for your board to AMIBOOT.ROM. and have it in.
Unplug your power. Take out your RAM. Clear the Cmos via the jumper, I believe it's JBAT1. Put your RAM back in. Then power up. Maybe have someone turn on the power while you hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. You really have to be fast. When you get your floppy, the board will read from it and restore your bios - then beep 4 times. It will then reboot. If you're lucky, all will be ok and you can go in and reset your settings in the Cmos.
I want to make this suggestion to anyone who flashes their bios': Have that backup disk in while you flash. If the flash goes bad, when you hit the reset button, immediately the boot block will hunt for that AMIBOOT.ROM file. If you shut down your power with the power button, your system won't power back up. You will swear it's dead. You won't get it back until you unplug your power cord, clear your cmos, reset your RAM, power back on and IMMEDIATELY hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. I really don't know what is going wrong with these bios releases, but for some boards, they appear to kill the board. I'm convinced that I will never be able to use any other bios but 1.3. There is a glitch in the chip evidently. With the bios that came programmed on the chip, you can, seemingly, get your board back. At least, that's been true for me.
Just keep trying. I believe you can get your board back. The boards are really nice but really finicky.

Battery Life Worse Now After iOS 6.1 Update on iPhone 5

Bought & using a new iPhone 5 since late December. Updated last night on the phone itself to 6.1 iOS. Now I am finding that the battery is draining considerably faster than before. I have seen the battery meter actually go down 1% at a time from when I unlock the screen to even swipe a couple of pages of apps and send one or two texts.
I did the expected battery-saving techniques of lowering the brightness, turning off the LTE and iCloud and Location Services. Manually push data for email was set always for me. But still battery dropping like a hot potato.
Any tips and/or ideas? I read on another thread about resetting the phone. Would that work? Needless to say I am aggravated and disappointed as this is my first new and current smartphone in over 5 years. And now this is all happening. Ugh!

The problem is more than likely being cause by corruption that occured during the iOS install or in the backup that was used to restore the phone after the update.
Standard troubleshooting is:
Re-boot the phone
Restore the phone from your backup
Restore the phone as a new device.
One of the 3 should fix the problem.

I deauthorized my computer and then authorized it again on iTunes because itunes kept telling me to authorize my computer, even though it was already authorized. Now, after deauthorizing it and authorizing it again, it still constantly says i need to.

same here - 10.7.2 trashed my wifi connectivity. I have 2 networks running, a G and an N. My laptop running 10.7.1 sees both, my Mini running 10.7.2 only sees the G network - doesn't see the Airport Extreme running an N network.
What an absolute pile of dog doo-doo Lion is. So many many faults and problems, I so regret installing Lion.

Magic keyboard stopped working after latest OS X updates (June 2013)

My iMac: Just performed the latest OS X updates (M Lion) that appeared sometime late May or June 2013. I think the updates were some camera updates and iTunes, and some other things that needed a restart of the computer. After reboot the magic keyboard (that came with the iMac) stopped working. I couldn't enter the password on login screen. Funny thing was the keyboard seemed to be paired with the computer, as the light buttons and the volume buttons worked, but only them, nothing else responded.
Even trying to restart/shut down the computer did not help. Actually shutting down the computer did not work, the spinning thing spun for a while and then the login screen reappeared. No progress.
Fix: In the end I hit the physical power button and forced a shut down. After booting up, the keyboard worked again.
Maybe this can help someone.

Sorry to hear that but my aluminum Bluetooth keyboard for my 27" iMac is working fine after the Supplemental Update.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
