MacBookPro4,1 Won't Boot OS X/Firmware Restoration CD?

I have a MacBookPro4,1 (2.5GHz). Because the LED was cracked, I removed the hard drive, installed it in a Mac Pro, installed OS X 10.7.5, and put the hard drive back into the MacBook Pro. The computer now powers on, the grey radian starts turning, but it never boots into OS X, not will it boot into the recovery partition. It will not boot from an OS X install disk or from it's own system install DVD. It will boot into Console/Single User Mode, it will boot the AHT from the install disk, and it will boot from the ASD EFI partition--but not the ASD OS partition. If the computer is started in Safe Boot, the grey progress bar one sees during firmware updates appears, progresses 25%, hangs, then disappears, and the computer doesn't boot. While it was booted into AHT and ASD EFI, all the diagnostic tests were run and all were passed.
Do I need to restore the firmware (although there appears to be no Firmware Restoration CD for this model). I would re-install the OS but I can't get it to boot from any OS X install media.

Clearly you have to get the MBP to boot from some device, and the internal HD isn't cooperating. Unfortunately neither is the DVD, which is disturbing and indicative of some unknown problem.
That leaves FireWire Target Disk Mode - can you connect it to your Mac Pro? I know from experience that another Mac started in Target Disk Mode will appear as a bootable device using Startup Manager, so try it.
I suspect that installing OS X on a HD installed on the Mac Pro, then removing it and installing it in the MBP may not be successful. If you connect the two, then boot FireWire Target Disk Mode, you should be able to download and install OS X specifying the MPB as its target system.
Try resetting the NVRAM. It contains startup disk information so corruption may have unknown effects.
I can't find a firmware restoration CD for that model either. You may need to see a Genius.

  • Macbook won't boot after ime Machine restore

I powered my laptop on last night and it would not boot. It just sits at the Apple log and spinning disc. I tried the usual recovery options fsck, disk utility, verify disk, etc. They all failed with different errors.
I tried restoring my Mac by booting with the Install DVD and pressing C. When it came up I tried restoring from Time Machine backup (not sure the exact name) It allowed me to select my Time Machine backup drive and proceeded to restore. It said the restore was successful and I needed to reboot.
After reboot it does the same thing. It won't boot.
Additional information: I have also tried a fresh install and it works fine, but then it won't see my Time Machine data to restore from. I figure this eliminates the hard drive as a suspect, and points to Time Machine being hosed up.
The laptop had not been restarted for about two weeks and I know there has been at least one Update since that time. Is it possible that the update broke it and as soon as I restarted it loaded the new broken files? And is it possible that my Time Machine restore is just restoring these broken files?

Yes, thanks this is all helpful information.
I tried restoring to older restore points and the TM restores work fine and the Mac boots up ok. I had to restore three more times to find the most recent backup that would still boot up ok.
Lesson learned here is to make a mental note of when updates are applied as well as when the laptop has been rebooted.
Now I still have two problems.
    1. The backup drive only has 11GB free space so I can't really archive the old backup in case something was missed. Any unless I am missing something I can't search the TM backup for ALL files modified after a certain date and then copy them over. This means that I have to browse folder by folder looking for new files and copy them over BEFORE wiping out the old backup and starting a new backup again.
    2. TM over WiFi is VERY slow and it will take 3-4 days to get the new backup completed. This makes me nervous knowing I have to delete my existing good backup to make room for the new backup to begin. What if TM fails or some other bad luck happens before the backup is complete.
I guess my big question here is whether there is an easy way of backing up TM connected via USB then move the drive to my APE and continue using WiFi. Last time I looked into this you had to make a copy of the sparse file and modify it. Once again this does not work because there is not enough space for TWO full backups of a 300GB drive with about 200GB of data. I have over 1TB of drives being used for backups of other computers so it's not like I am being cheap and just don't have the space. I have a 500GB for my desktop backup, a 320 for my laptop backup and a 120 for my other laptop backup. guess I could just go throw more money at it and get two 1TB drives so one could be the local backup of all these computers and have the other at an off site location using CrashPlan to also backup all the drives.

  • Satellite A40-231 won't boot after wrong firmware update

    Hi,
i own a toshiba satellite a40-231.it won't boot anymore because i have flashed it's dvd-rw drive(sdr-6112) with the wrong firmware and i also made a big mistake making a non-bootable active dos partition, trying to flash the correct firmware. So, my question is: can i boot from usb flash disk?i believe it's the only option i have left, if not network boot.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
As far as I know its not possible to boot from any other devices as from USB FDD / HDD / CD-ROM / LAN
You could boot from network but if you want to install the OS via LAN you will need an RIS server. But its not very easy to do it without any additional experience. So I think this option is nothing for you.
It seems the drive is dead or malfunctions and therefore the best idea is to replace the device drive. I know, its hard to hear that but I dont see any other solution

  • White screen & won't boot after Time Machine restore 10.8.2

    Hello,
I know someone posted a similar issue but that it was related to a hardware failure.  Mine was not a hardware failure.
Just wanted to give an FYI to anyone who may run into this issue.  I recently restored my Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup (10.8.2)
and I was getting a blank white screen at startup where the spinning line "|" would appear and then go away, and then come back, and then disappear...  Over and over.  Booting into single user mode resulted in the same issue.
I ended up re-installing Mountain Lion over itself and my machine booted sucessfully.  Did all the software updates and I'm back at 10.8.2 again.
This is just an FYI, something for you to try if you get the same error, hope this helps someone.

Startup command-s and at the prompt type reboot
    Then press return.

  • Win8 won't boot after MB firmware update on FM2-A85XA-G65

Config: MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard with APU plus an ASUS Radeon 6670 card for dual graphics. As per AMD recommendation the monitor DVI cable is plugged into my IGP (it has the higher product number: 7660 vs. 6670). SATA set to RAID mode and RAID set to Legacy ROM.
I've installed Win8, and everything works fine up until I flash my MB firmware from version 1.1 (it was shipped with this version) to 1.6.
At that point I am able at most to get to a windows error screen that shows up only shortly before automatic system reset, and shows a sad smiley and some error message.
Also in 1.6 I've found a firmware menu named "Windows 8 Configuration" which wasn't there in 1.1. If I started with enabled win8 features in that menu, I got a firmware error immediately after the first reset and boot, saying that my video card doesn't support GOP so no win8 features can be enabled.
After 2 hours of pointless try-and-fail I went back to firmware version 1.1 and booted my Windows successfully.
Any ideas about what could have went wrong?

No, UEFI booting is not needed. None the less Win8 features of the UEFI which have been included in later versions aren't supported without a GOP vbios.  If you are fine with that then all is ok. If you want Win8 features it would require getting another vga.

As for the problem being the RAID - it speaks against it that a Windows error screen appeared. Also I didn't mention, but my system disk is set up as RAID-Ready, because that was the only way to have both a mirror for data and a single disk for Windows. That means there is no RAID-magic on that boot disk, it should work. And as I entered the RAID setup menu with 1.6, I could see both logical drives.
To be honest that is what would happen if a RAID ROm update troubles Windows and that is why it works with original version you set up Windows with.

  • IMac won't boot after factory setting restore

I stupidly changed all the permission settings on my day old iMac HD. The folder of work I migrated was showing up as read only, so I unwittingly changed the whole HD to read and write permission.
Since then I have been unable to boot the computer up. The screen goes straight to grey screen, the apple logo appears then the loading wheel graphic.... and it sticks at this.
I have done the following to try and rectify:
    1. Removed all peripherals. Unplugged are replugged.
    2. Repaired disk in disk utility (no problems found)
    3. Repaired permissions in the disk utility (disk repaired sucessfully)
    4. Booted to reset NVRAM/PRAM
    5. Erased and reinstalled OS (twice)
    Nothing has worked so far.
Can anyone advise, before I have to speak to a Genius?
    Thanks

Like Barry, I can only think of trying an SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Failing that, unless someone else has some other suggestions, it's looking like a call to a Genius.
Good luck and let us know what the fix was if the Genius manages to get it going.

  • G5 Boots to Open firmware on Startup every time.

I have a 2004 model Dual 1.8GHz 2.2Gbs RAM. The problem is that it keeps booting into Open Firmware. Once it gets to Open Firmware and i can mac-boot and start up off the Tiger disc, but I can't get it to find an external firewire OS. I don't have a hard drive in there at the moment but that should not effect this issue, Although I can see the firewire 800 in disk utilities but not on the Firewire 400. And still no Start up folder when i go to startup disk 800 or 400. If I put a hard drive in which i will when the new one arrives I believe i will be able to start up with it but I still think that it might boot into Open Firmware again. (I think a bus is bad maybe the Firewire bus if it is can't I bypass it somehow? so that is won't boot into Open Firmware.
    Note: everything passes Hardware Test
I have Reset PRAM and NVRAM Rest all

(Sorry this is in here twice - I'm pretty experienced with Macs and PCs but a little new at message boards - pls forgive)
Had the same problem. I took mine into a "Mac Genius" at the retail store and he thought he had fixed it by rebuilding the directory. It booted and shut down perfectly while in the store. When I got home it was went right back to booting into open firmware.
I figured out by accident that the reason it was booting fine in the store was because he was using a cheap SVGA monitor on the DVI output - not the ADB connector I use with my older Apple monitor. Note that Apple has phased these type of connectors out. It gave me a great excuse to upgrade my monitor to a 20" cinema display and everything is working great (can't believe how I've deprived myself all these years).
If you have an older monitor that uses an ADB connector, try a different monitor that uses the DVI output on your video card. Even a DVI-VGA adapter (one probably came with your computer) with a VGA monitor is sufficient for testing. If your computer boots up, it's either the older monitor, or the ADB output on the video card that is bad. There is no easy way to know where the actual problem resides (the Geniuses couldn't tell me - they have no monitors in the store with ADB connectors), but I can tell you that my computer is working fine now. I do know that the ADB connector ran power, USB and video all together and that seems to be the reason they quit using them. The newer desktops have only 2 DVI outputs (instead of 1 ADB + 1 DVI), while the new monitors run power, USB and video separately.
    Hope that helps,
    Jeff

  • Drive On Mac Pro Won't Open For Firmware Restoration?

    Hi--
My Mac Pro (early 2008 model, OS 10.6.8) has recently begun having problems that seem firmware-related. When put in "Sleep" mode overnight, it wakes up on its own after about two hours of sleep and remains awake.  Also, from time to time it will display the prompt window ("Do You Want To Shut Down?") for a hard (button) shutdown---without the button having been pressed. Resetting the SMC and the PRAM solves the problem for awhile, but it's becoming necessary to do that more and more frequently---at first, the problem occured about every six months, then weekly, until now I'm getting the shutdown prompt and have to reset the SMC almost every day.
Internet searches of this and other forums have indicated that a possible solution is restoring the firmware.  I have made a Firmware Restoration CD but I cannot get the machine to recognize it. That is, when I press and hold the startup button I get the "three long-three short-three-long" beeps; according to Apple's FAQ on ths subject, the optical drive door should then open and allow me to insert the Firmware Restoration disk, but that doesn't happen--the computer just goes right on with the normal startup sequence.
    Please advise.

all I can do is tell you what I've learned here-try either one of these-hold down the shift key on startup/hold down the mouse on startup/if not,  See if you can boot up in single user mode/reset NVRAM,(command option, o+F)on reboot . Failing that....pull down the optical drive door, and using a straightened extra study paperclip, find the small hole near the optical drive tray. Stick that paperclip in and the tray should open up just enough for you to grab it and put the cd in there. Maybe then, start up holding down the C key......
    just a guess though
    Good luck to you

  • HT1750 My I mac won't boot, I have gone to restore but the apple hard drive next to the main hard drive says the drive is "locked" ??????  What to do?

I have an IMac which won't boot up and when I tried the restore function the Hard Drive next to the Main Hard Drive says it is "locked" when I tried to use it to restore my system.  I have Mountain Lion which was working fine until recently.  Now I can sit LITERALLY for an hour waiting for the gear to stop spinning but not results for loading the program.   HELP!!!

As of 10.8.4,  the volume must be unlocked first.
Here’s how the unlock procedure works for Disk Utility:
Boot your Mac and hold down ⌘-R (Command –R) to boot from the Recovery HD partition.
    Open Disk Utility.
    Select your locked hard drive.
Under the File menu, select Unlock “Drive Name”
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Once you unlock the disk, hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on the File menu.
Under the File menu, select Turn Off Encryption… with the Option key held down, it is no longer grayed-out.
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Disk Utility should display a progress window labeled Starting conversion to JHFS+
Your drive should now be unlocked.

  • Mac mini won't boot after accidental loss of power during firmware upgrade

i accidentally hit the power switch on the wall during an upgrade (might even have been a firmware upgrade, I didn't really look at what was going on).  Anyway, now it hangs on the silver Apple logo screen with a spinny wheel on reboot.  It's only 3 months old, it's the $599 model.
What to do?  I see that you can download firmware restoration disks but they appear to be limited to earlier versions of the Mac mini.

I took it to the Mac store today and they fixed it for free by booting from an external drive and finishing the half-baked system update.  Now that I know how to do that, I can fix it myself next time.
Thanks to Alan at the Salem, NH store!!

  • Ipad won't boot; can't update ios b/c HD space; don't want to restore

    Hi All,
I've got a friends iPad 4 and I'm trying to help him out. The device won't boot (just toggles between black screen and Apple logo). I can get it into the upgrade mode by holding the home buttong and connecting it to iTunes. When I do this, the expected prompt of update or restore appears. I try to update it, but it doesn't work because there isn't enough hard drive space on the iPad.
It seems the only option is to do a restore. But here is the problem - the device has my brother's wedding video on it, and my friend didn't back it up to the cloud. So the question is, is there anyway that I can (a) get the update to go through so the device will boot or (b) get the device into a bootable state without requiring an update or (c) get access to the HD to retrieve the video - all without loosing the wedding video?
    I appreciate the help.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot from Restore CD

I followed the instructions in order to restore my MBP to it's factory settings, but upon attempting to restore, the Macbook won't boot from the CD drive. It get's stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo, but no spinning wheel shows up. It's just the gray screen with the apple logo. Is there any solution?

1 Insert the Mac OS X installation disc that came with your computer, and then double-click the Install Max OS X icon.
    2. In the Installer, click Utilities, and then click Restart.
    3. When the Language Chooser appears, select your language, and then click the Continue button.
4 Choose Utilities > Desk Utility
    5...
    6...
    7...
I can only get past step two. When the computer restarts it goes the the grey screen with the apple logo and freezes there. The spinning wheel that shows that it is booting doesn't appear. So, I attempted to just do a regular restart and hold down the 'c' button so that it would boot from the restore disc, but the same thing happens. It goes to the gray screen with the apple logo and freezes there with no spinning wheel to indicate that it is trying to boot. For about five or ten seconds when this screen is on I can hear the CD drive spinning, but it shortly stops spinning. (I've tried two discs -- the original disc that came with it and a replacement disc that they sent me).

  • EMac won't boot of restore CD

I have an eMac running Panther that won't boot up (I don't remember what os version number).
Recently I bought my Mac a new ultra thin keyboard. This keyboard requires a new driver to run the Mac specific function keys. I downloaded the driver, installed it and it didn't work, so following these instructions: (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/26/fix-those-aluminium-keyboard-woes/) I tried reinstalling... with woeful results. My eMac will no longer go past the grey apple screen with the spinning wheel. Sometimes (not always) it ends up on the grey no entry sign.
I have tried to reboot off the eMac Install and Restore disk (no.1). It doesn't work, just ejects the disk and carries on (so I cannot run "archive and install"). I have tried booting holding down "C", ALT, CMD-OPT-SFT-DEL and have even tried to boot off my disks for earlier OSX versions (10.2 and 10.0.4). No luck with anything.
I was able to make the Hardware Test run but it found no errors.
I have reset PRAM and I still couldn't boot of the restore disk. I tried booting with CMD-V, both before and after resetting PRAM. Previously I got about 15 lines of text and then the machine stuck on "still waiting for root device". After resetting PRAM I get about 200 lines, but all saying "can't determine" or "couldn't alloc" or "can't generate" or "can't find" or "cannot resolve" or "did not complete" up until it gets to "IP Firewall loaded" at which point it freezes.
So I have run out of ideas... can anyone suggest what I can try next, or how I can finally get my eMac restore disk to boot up?
(I also tried to save my files by connecting my MacBook and using Target Disk Mode... but although I was able to connect ok, all the folders I need to copy have a 'access denied' icon next to them... so I couldn't get that to work either... very frustrating!)

That you can boot off the Apple Hardware Test CD tells us the optical drive is OK. You have the original OS X discs that came with the eMac, which certainly should be able to boot the machine. The most obvious explanation for being able to boot from the AHT disc but not the OS X Install disc would be if the OS X Install disc is defective. Do you recall if you ever booted from the bundled OS X Install disc before? Does the disc show any smudges or scratches when viewed at an angle under a strong light? A more certain test would be to put the eMac OS X Install disc into the MacBook to see if the MacBook can recognize and read the disc.
If the eMac's OS X Install disc does appear defective, there are a couple of things to try. First is physically cleaning the disc; you can rub it with a soft lint-free cloth using distilled water (look in the auto section of grocery or drug stores) --- distilled avoids any trace chemicals or sediments in tap water --- or using the cleaning solution and mechanical disc spinner from any commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit (I've used Phillips brand cleaning kits for some time). That should work well for smudges or any buildup of grime on the disc. If using a commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit, use the lens cleaner for a pass or two in the eMac, just to improve the signal-to-noise ratio when trying to read th OS X Install disc.
If cleaning the disc doesn't help, you can try a couple of things. A phone call to eventually reach a live operator at the Apple Store or AppleCare will let you ask the person on the other end to check if there are any bundles disc sets available for your specific eMac model (you'll want to have the info in eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy). Such disc sets are sometimes unofficially available long after the Mac model with which they shipped goes off the sales catalog, and are available for a fairly modest charge.
Otherwise, you'd want to find another set of OS X Install discs that will work with your specific eMac model and let you do an Archive and Install to preserve your mail and other user data in place (which is easier than copying all user data to the MacBook, doing an erase & install on the eMac, and then dragging your data back from the MacBook). Finding an eMac-specific (gray label) set of discs on someplace like eBay would be least expensive but most time-consuming, and you'd need to make sure you get the right model eMac discs. It would be more certain of the results to get a retail (black label) OS X Install disc. Panther 10.3 of the same or higher dot version number as the eMac shipped with will work. It may or may not work to use a non-eMac model specific gray label Panther OS X Install disc if you afterwards use the Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9 on the eMac.
It might be easiest to just get the retail Tiger OS X 10.4 discs (still available by calling the Apple Store last time I'd heard), especially if you qualify for the educational or federal government/contractor purchasing discount. Upgrading to Leopard may also be an option with your eMac, but Tiger is fully mature and has lesser CPU and memory demands than Leopard. If you do go for the retail OS X disc route, be sure to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the Installer's menu --- Disk Utility in Tiger 10.4.2 and later is significantly more capable than DU in earlier versions.
And, come to think of it, upgrading to 10.4 would also eliminate the conflict with the keyboard function keys software that started all this in the second place (first place being the spilled chocolate milk on the original keyboard; just be grateful it wasn't small inquisitive peanut butter and jelly smeared hands trying to insert a CD into the optical drive).
Good luck! This is certainly an aggravating experience to go through for what should've been a two minute job of swapping keyboards! (If it helps any, from experience I can tell you that before you know it, instead of worrying about your children with computers, you'll be worrying about them with cars.)

  • GT70-2PC Dominator - Won't boot after restore

Today I performed a factory restore using the DVDs I burned when I first got this laptop (I had deleted the recovery partition).
Everything went fine, however now the laptop won't boot.
I don't see the drives in the bios unless I disable UEFI.
If I switch to legacy mode, the drives appear but don't boot.
I booted up off a "Mini Tool Partition Wizard" cd and the file structure looks like I would expect.
Even the recovery partition is back though F3 doesn't work.
I am running an unlocked bios, other than that, I'm stock.
Any ideas before I give up and go buy a W8 license to do a clean install??

Svet was just saying that if you deleted the recovery partitions, doing a 'factory restore' from the F3 boot option will not work.
You mentioned you used the Recovery DVD's that you created, correct? Those would not have the same issue.
You shouldn't NEED to buy a Win8 license to do a clean install, you already own one with the laptop. You can use a Windows 8 disc (that is the SAME version...ie if it's Home Premium you need a home premium disc to install it....) and install it that way.
Failing that, I would give the recovery discs another try and see if they can fix it. Once more, before you try the clean install method.
