MacBookPro5,1 + Install Mac 10.9.3 = restart loop (safe boot only)
Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.
Things I have tried with no succes so far:
Reinstall 10.9.3
Reset power manager/SMC
Zap NVRAM
Puzzled over error logs
Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
Made bootable installer on external drive
Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
Replaced 8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode
Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:
Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
Verified disk with Disk Utility
Repaired permissions with DU
Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.
I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...
Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
The backtrace looks the same (on cursory examination) whether the error log was generated by the clean external HD install or the internal notebook HD.

I wonder if com.apple.ucupdate.plist is locked?
Thanks for this suggestion, gives me more info to look up.
I can tell this 5,1 really wants to run Mavericks, even running in Mavericks Safe Mode is giving longer battery life already...

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled. I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
Thanks for all your help.
Gratefully,

Hi jim1287,po
Check for the latest updates. Installing latest updates should resolve this problem.
Also, try to ran disk repair using safe mode in Mac, for instructions please visit: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204
Try enabling root user profile on mac and try to check. OS X Mavericks: Enable and disable the root user

Mac start normal boot after safe boot only.
Hello. My mac is about 3 1/5 years old now. Recently, my username crashed. In other words, my mac works on my brother's user name and then guest's as well but doesn't work in mine. It froze when loading. I took it to the mac support but then he created a new user with my name and then copied all my files to that one but he left the way it is. Now, everytime I start it, apple gray screen turns into a prohibitoy logo. So I do a safe boot and then it goes to a login screen. I then press restart button (with out the safe boot) then only my mac starts normally. The thing is I have to do this every time when I start my computer. Every time my computer boots twice.
So is there a way to fix this? I have reset the Ram but no avail. I don't want to erase and fix it. May be there is some issue with the old user. If I can fix that I might fix my computer but it's still a blind guess.
Please give me some opinions.

Mac OS 10.9 WiFi Issue: Safe boot needed
I started seeing a problem connecting to Wifi AP soon after the upgrade to 10.9. (A similar thread exists on the discussion groups but not quite the same)
Essentially the problem I see after having upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 is "Connecting to a new wifi access point requires a safe boot". Here is what I have to do in order to switch between two wifi APs -
1. Safe boot and connect to wifi AP1.
2. Then I can reboot normally any number of times and I will connect to AP!.
3. If I switch to AP2 now, I will get a "locally assigned IP". Nothing can fix this - deleting wifi interfaces, re-adding wifi APs etc.
4. Safe boot and connect to AP2.
5. Now I can re-connect to AP2 successfully after a reboot.
PS. I had to spend quite a few hours at the Apple genius bar to figure this workaround.

I don't think Mac OS X Lion is entering Safe Boot mode
Hi Everyone,
I always do a safe boot when troubleshooting since my first MacBook with Leopard and after installing Lion in a new MacBook Pro, I don't think I'm entering safe boot mode. I mean, I press the shift key at boot time like I've done countless times before but now I think my MacBook Pro is not booting safe.
Namely: I don't see the words "Safe Boot" on the login screen, it doesn't take longer and the pinwheel is not replaced by a progress bar when booting.
Can anyone please tell me what's going on?
Thanks in advance! When I tried to run the Apple Hardware Test and couldn't start it with the "D" key, even though the "Alt" key and "Cmd+R" boot options did work, I started getting more suspicious.
I reset the PRAM and that fixed my issue.
For the record, the words "Safe Boot" on the login screen did not appear, but the progress bar instead of the pinwheel did. -
MY Macbook air keeps starting in "safe boot" mode, no idea why. I cannot get into the system because this mode makes everything write in capital letters and my password is in lower case. I keep turning it off and on but nothing changes and i cannot access my computer. Please can someone help me? Thank you
I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5570
Beyond that, we will need additional details about what specific symptoms you're seeing in order to help further. One thing I can say, though, is that these problems are very unlikely to be due to any kind of malware. See my Mac Malware Guide to learn more on that topic. -
Installing mac os x on an existing dual-booted laptop (with windows/linux)
Hey everybody,
I am wondering if any of you have advice for the best way of going about installing a version of the Mac operating system on my Dell laptop, considering that I already have Windows and Linux (SuSE) in a dual-boot environment, and an Intel Pentium 4-M processor (which I think is x86?)...
I've looked at the Mac store and it looks like OS X Tiger is only for PPC processors. Is there a way to get it to run on my processor?
The reason I am doing this is that I really want to test a website I am developing on Mac browsers, like Safari and IE on Mac, but I can't afford to buy a new Mac system (nor do I really want to, since I use this one computer for everything).
Also, would the Mac installer be able to partition my drive for me automatically?
Thanks!
StephenJust make your web site standards compliant and we'll be fine.
The only trouble we'd have is if you started coding your sites chock-full of Microsoft ActiveX garbage.
And don't bother coding your web site to function on IE for Mac. Most Mac users are smart enough to not use a dead web browser which hasn't been supported or updated in years. Microsoft ended its life long ago. -

I used disk utility and Its says the Macintosh HD is ok in green. I did try to install Xcode 3.2.6, but after hours of reading im stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated.Does this happen often, or is it just this once?
If it is just this one time, it might just be something odd happened. If it continues to happen, I would try to reinstall OS X. You don't need to erase the drive or anything like that, just reinstall.
Also, make sure you back up, preferably before doing any other troubleshooting.
There doesn't appear to be any third-party kernel extensions or external devices causing the problem. That normally indicates a hardware problem.
Have you changed your RAM or any other hardware? -
I am trying to re-install Mac OS X Leopard
I tried to re-install Mac OS X Leopard and then realized I only had one disc and did not have disc two. Apple sent me an install DVD but not disc two. Is there anyway I can cancel the install of disc one and install the DVD?
Reboot & hold alt key at bootup with the new Disc in place.

Hi all,
my macbook pro became extermily slow for some reason, I rebooted it many times and same problem so I decided to reinstall the Mac OS X lion from the internet.
I tried installing lion internet recovery, it downloaded it and restarted. I got the "Install Mac OS X" window. then while installing I got the sad message " Install Failed Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer" and the only botton is "restart". Everytime I restart I gor the same message. Now I am trying to start from the harddisk but I does not show when you start the pc, keep clicking the "alt" botton. It only shows "Mac OS X Installer" and "Recovery HD". What Should I do?
I appreciate your help. Thanks. Thanks Baltwo.
I could format it and get the back up from time machine but it is not up to date so I want to leave it at last.
I tried to back it up on external hard drive and got an error, tried CCC for back up and error again.
Just wanted to do an update on the subject. Still trying to get it back. -
Can't i install mountain lion - restart loops
I have a macbook pro aluminium - late 2008. While updating from 10.6.8 to 10.8, the computer keeps restarting! In one attempt I managed to install ML, but can only boot in safe mode.
I've tried:
- inserting the original 10.5 disk to boot: error
- formatting the drive - can't unmount
- pulling a time machine backup - ok, but that's 10.6.8
- web install through 10.8's safe mode.
nothing works. I'm afraid it may be a hardware problem with the graphics card: 9600m gt.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you!UPDATE:
- tried Pacifier in safe mode and removed all non Apple kernels - continues the loop;
- the folder /Library/StartupItems/iCoreService doesn't exist in my HD
