MacBookPro5,1 Wrong SMC
Greetings to All,
I am facing a very strange thing on my Macbook Pro 5.1
To start this is my information of my Machine:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.41f2
Serial Number (system): --------------
Hardware UUID: -----------
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
As you can see the SMC version is 1.41f2 but when is go to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237
Where you can download the latest EFI and SMC version is different!!!
What i should have is :
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
MacBookPro5,1
MBP51.007E.B06 (EFI 2.8)
1.33f8 (SMC 1.2)
So the EFI is Correct but the SMC is wrong.....
Can Please someone give me a solution on this?
The laptop is heating very much at 81 celsius ( not all the time but is not normal when i just watch a movie or youtube....)
And the buttery does not last or goes from 50% down to 10% within 2 minutes....and the battery has 66 cycles...
Thank you all in advance!!
Greetings,
Sorry for my late reply but was out of the town.
I live in a place where Apple Store in not an Option. I have to travel to Athens that means 3 hours and costs... I have to take it there and go to take it back....
I have checked all over the internet and the same results found about the versions so i think what is written by Apple is correct. So does anyone knows how can i install the correct SMC Firmware? Anyone?
As i mentioned i download the correct one but when i try to install it says in not needed for my system.....
and that is normal because i have installed ( I DID NOT INSTALLED I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPEND) 1.41f2 and the correct one is : 1.33f8 so it checks the version and since the one i try to install is older does not install....
Please help

IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it
I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.
billDavid,
Looking through my old posts to refresh my memory, my face is red as *I AM* mistaken:O
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4064287
I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

Macbook Pro mid 2009 will not boot unless SMC is reset (macbookpro5,5)
Hello!
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro (macbookpro5,5) and I've had this weird issue for like a month, and I ran out of ideas.
So my problem is: whenever I turn on my mbp (either on OS X or Windows 7) it will go to sleep (on OS X after it shows the login screen and on Windows when it's loading) and when it wakes up, *it goes to sleep again*!
I kinda panicked back then because I couldn't get to boot the machine for all what was worth, but then I tried resetting the SMC and voila! it booted; and I thought that was it, but no, it wasn't: *I have to reset the SMC everytime I turn on the mbp*, or else the same sleeping loop will happen again and again.
This happened after installing the first March Update that Apple released (which misteriously only addressed iTunes issues - supposedly) on OS X. I already tried looking for SMC or EFI updates (just in case) and I already have the current versions (just EFI, SMC updates were never released for this mbp) so now I have no clue on what to do...
And what really puzzles me is that I disabled sleep when closing the lid on Windows 7, and it worked fine, but after this issue, it just goes to sleep, even when I see the closing the lid option on "do nothing", it's just weird.
Does anybody had some sort of trouble like that?? or anyone has some hints that may help me??
Message was edited by: piku9000Well, it seems that apple fixed this issue in the 10.6.7 update. I kinda wish there was a little more documentation about the patches released and what files they modify, since no update was released to the SMC, I have no idea why it had to modify it. Anyway, thanks for the help!

Apple's KB article on resetting SMC is wrong
Apple's guide to Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) (see here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964?locale=en_US ) is wrong. Following the same procedure, but with slight modification produces the desired result. This is for macbooks of the removable battery type.
As documented in this forum thread ( http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?p=1773809#post1773809 ) it is important to pay attention to the order in which you do replace the battery and power cord. Here's the relavant bit:
"I unplugged the power supply, removed the battery, and then held the power button down for five seconds. Then I plugged the power cord back in FIRST, so that the LED lit bright green (it was a dim green when the battery was installed first). Next I installed the battery. After a few seconds, the LED on the power plug turned dim green again, but when I rebooted the computer, the battery immediately began charging."
There are numerous other users who've reported that Apple's method doesn't work but this did. I hope apple will consider updating their kb article.
It ought to read:
1. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Reconnect the MagSafe power adapter.
6. Reconnect the battery.
7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Steps 5 and 6 are currently one step, with the battery the implied first item to reinstall.
Thanks for reading. Thanks Andy that's a very good suggestion.
ALSO I had a look at a 2 year old posting of Shane's which had a link to Apple's official document.
"That'll be no good", I thought but clicked it nevertheless.
Lo and behold, it had been updated just 2 weeks ago, so must now be referring to FCP 6.
Unfortunately that's all it refers to - not FCS 2........... I wonder why they are so cagey about it?
Nevertheless it's better than nothing and I am left wondering why my intensive search of the Knowledge Base didn't unearth it.

hi. my MacBook pro went off without me turnng it off. i tried turning it on again, but it wouldnt come on. i also tried doing the SMC thing, no avail. please any other thing to do ? (This notebook is still very new for anything to be wrong with it).
There is no way I would do the smc thing with a laptop that won't come on.If it's new and you're anywhere near an Apple Store, take it in. If it's less than 14 days old you can exchange it. If it's more they'll repair it for you.

Smc update gone wrong???
I have a macbook air 13" mid 2012 with mountain lion, when i tried to install the smc update my fan started to run at full speed, keyboard lights gone, charger light gone, and it wont work without the charger pluss many other things. Any suggestions?
Try recovery mode:
1. Start iTunes.
2. Connect phone to a USB port directly on the computer, not an external hub or keyboard port.
3. Press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears, then continue pressing the home button alone until iTunes sees the phone in Recovery Mode.
4. Follow the prompts to restore. -
Smc and smuser both put wrong home directory in /etc/passwd
Hello,
I'm trying to use 'smuser add' as an alternative to 'useradd' in a setuid script, using -d to specify a home directory other than the default. Unfortunately, although the directory is created in the right place, the default is written into /etc/passwd.
%smuser add -u sapadm -p ***** -- -d /appuser/inputs/tom -g sapusers -n tom -s /bin/sh
Loading Tool: com.sun.admin.usermgr.cli.user.UserMgrCli from localhost
Login to localhost as user sapadm was successful.
Download of com.sun.admin.usermgr.cli.user.UserMgrCli from localhost was successful.
% ls -al /appuser/inputs/tom
total 14
drwxr-x--- 2 tom sapusers 5 Mar 28 15:48 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 sj staff 3 Mar 28 15:48 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 tom sapusers 136 Mar 28 15:48 .cshrc
-rw-r--r-- 1 tom sapusers 157 Mar 28 15:48 .login
-rw-r--r-- 1 tom sapusers 174 Mar 28 15:48 .profile
% cat /etc/passwd
tom:x:101:1002::/home/tom:/bin/sh
% ls -al /home/tom
/home/tom: No such file or directory
% uname -a
SunOS sun03 5.10 Generic_127112-07 i86pc i386 i86pc
Exactly the same thing happens when I use the SMC2.1 GUI - even though it echoes back to me that the directory path qill /appuser/inputs before I hit 'finish', the directory is created correctly, but /home/tom goes into /etc/passwd.
Is there any fix/workaround for this, or am I back to an old-fashioned useradd in a setuid script?
Thanks

isnt that a little dangerous??
What files a user can change is determined by the files' permission settings, not by the user's homedir. The homedir only tells what the initial working directory when a user logs in is, nothing else, it doesn't implicit writing or even reading access. So no, it's not dangerous, not even a little. -
Macbook4,1 10.6.8 and firmware update - what went wrong?
Macbook 4,1 2008 2.4Ghz (not unibody). I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled 10.6 from the Retail DVD and all seemed to go well. The MB was working fine up to that point. I then set up the MB (network, date and time, etc.) and repaired permissions.
I then checked Software Update and downloaded and installed the recommended updates to 10.6.8.
Again, all seemed to go fine. System booted and I repaired Permissions again. I went to the Apple web site, a couple of other web sites, and Software Update found another update to install: Firmware. Though I don't remember what version.
I clicked OK and it installed.
Upon reboot, it seemed to install okay.
But then I left the Macbook and it went into Sleep.
I didn't come back to it again until the next day.
When I pressed a key to wake it, I got what I now know is the screen that appears after you wake it from SAFE SLEEP. As per this Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757.
And this is where the problems started.
After the MB woke to the Safe Sleep screen, which shows the desktop a little "out of focus", the progress bars started filling in from left to right, BUT before they completed, the screen went BLACK.
And it has had a problem with black screen ever since. I can boot the MB from internal or external HD or from DVD, and it seems to boot fine. Boot chime, Apple logo, spinning wheel, then at the point where it pauses, blue screen, then goes to desktop, instead the screen goes black.
It finishes booting, but seems to go into Sleep.
I can wake it by pressing a key, but the screen either comes on and goes black again after 10 seconds, or I get the Safe Sleep wake screen, and then it goes black after 10 seconds.
And at boot or when waking the MB, the front LED flashes 5 times. There are no error beeps.
I've tried changing RAM, but problems remain.
So what's all this? Any ideas?
The display doesn't seem dead, as it works to boot and wake. The MB works fine with external monitor.
It's weird, but I can't think of anything apart from the Firmware update. The problems started right after installing it.
Unfortunately, this model of Macbook doesn't have a Firmware Restoration image to download and burn to CD. It is the ONLY Mac at this point that doesn't have this!
I called Apple support and even bought the 49 Euro Pay Per Incident service, which proved to be the same as throwing 49 Euro out the window. The only "technical" support they provided was to Reset the SMC, which you can find out about FOR FREE at the Apple website. And which I'd done anyway. I'd also reinstalled the MacOS. Don't want to beef too much, but sheesh, you've already got a Macbook that might need costly repairs, and they make you pay 49 Euro BEFORE they even ask you about the problem and what you've done to try to solve it. I'm tempted to say "ripoff". I mean, if all they can offer you is the advice to reset the SMC - which Apple offers for free at their website - then that's pretty poor service for 49 Euro, to say the least.
Apart from the wasted 49 Euro, I'm pretty peeved about the Firmware update (or so it seems) wrecking a perfectly working 2008 Macbook. I don't know how to convince Apple of this, but I'm certainly going to try. Thanks for the reply.
Re. the Displays setting, the Macbook display isn't recognized and mirroring isn't an available option.
I've scoured the net and the idea of replacing the PRAM battery may be something to try. I read a post by a guy with a Macbook logic board screwed up by a Firmware update, which he solved by replacing the PRAM battery, as when you disconnect it you reset the logic board.
Which capacitor?
No luck so far with talking to Apple. I will try to get hold of someone a little more tech savvy and/or in a position of authority, as it seems that the Firmware is the culprit. Obviously a million other things could go wrong with a Macbook, but given the timing here it looks like the Firmware. Firmware updates can and occasionally do screw up a computer, as most manufacturers will warn you before you apply the update: PC makers, printer makers, etc. And they probably warn you that it's all your responsibility if anything goes wrong. But re. the Apple Firmware update:
1) it came thru Software Update
2) there was no warning
3) to make things worse, there's no Firmware Restoration image that I can burn to a CD to reflash the logic board: this is the only Apple computer that doesn't have a Firmware Restoration option
I'll try to get thru to a manager and convince him/her that the firmware may have been the cause.
Do you think an authorized Apple tech might have access to some way to do a firmware restoration? Something not avaiable to mere mortals? Because if not, the only solution looks like a new logic board. -
15" MBP Mid-2010 (6,2) SMC 1.7 Broke my MBP
Hi All,
My beloved 15" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is not well and is sitting on life support and is only barely amongst the living. On the 23rd Feb 2013 I noticed the SMC 1.7 firmware update in my AppStore App (this firmware was released on the 13th of Feb if I can recall correctly) and unfortunately I clicked install.
The update started to install and then stated that my Battery should be charged (it was 100%) and power plugged in (it was) and requested a reboot to which I clicked yes. Started rebooting and installing the firmware and rebooted once or twice automatically and then after the final reboot, screen black and no Apple Power boot sound. I left it for 5mins and then thought ok, maybe its powered down. Pressed the Bower button and all I could hear was the CD-Rom powering and no display and no sound. I tried the PRAM reset, SMC reset but nothing. The following day I took it to our only Apple Center (Live in Windhoek,Namibia) in the Country. The next day they phoned and said that my Logic Board is faulty. I told them that my MBP was perfect until the stupid SMC update. They told me that I can leave a kidney and a peace of my liver as for the repair costs will be something like US$900 or I could buy a second hand Logic Board for something like US$500.
This is a no go for me as for all was fine up until the SMC update came through. As for I had nothing to loose now anymore, I opened the MBP and removed the Battery and with the power cord disconnected and holding the Power Button for a couple of seconds and while holding the Power Button, connecting the power cord and after a few seconds releasing the Power Button again, my MBP started up. Problem now is that my Fans run 100% and the keyboard backlight is dead and the battery does not charge nor is seen by the MBP. I can now switch it off an back on and my MBP will power up and boot into OSX. If I do a SMC reset (holding shift control option while pressing power button), I am back where I started - MBP not power on, but battery charges again etc. Doing the whole battery removal again with power button pressing and only then connecting the power cord, it starts again.
After booting into OSX, I had a look at my system profiler and now see that the SMC version is 1.70f6 and as per this page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237 , my version should have flash 1.58f17 - Seems like there was a bug in Apple's SMC 1.7 Firmware code it it thought that my 15"MBP was a 17"MBP and now my SMC does not talk propperly with my hardware it seeems. I maild the Apple Guys here in Windhoek about my findings and asked them to get in contact with the Apple Geniouses overseas to find out if they could downgrade the SMC again or if they have a fix, but they don't want to help and just sayed I must have a look on www.apple.com/support and downloads and search for my SMC version and install.
That does not work as for the packages just say its not for my version - well my version is not for my MBP!
Is there maybe somebody that can help me or should I just throw my MBP away, of maybe wait 2 years in hope that another SMC version will come out that will load the propper SMC code onto my MBP? Please Guys and Girls out there - any manual way maybe of forcing a SMC firmware downgrade or reapplying the propper code of version 1.7?
Please and keeping fingers crossed.
MarkOk, it has now been three months since the last SMC 1.7 firmware update broke my mid-2010 15” MacBook Pro and having had it at two different Apple “Certified” technical centers and both told me that there is nothing that Apple can do except for replacing the Logic Board for something like US$ 500. I was not going to pay that amount for a 2010 MacBook to have its LogicBoard replaced so I unfortunately went out and bought a new MacBook Pro last month. Why unfortunately ............. BECAUSE I MANAGED TO FIX MY OLD MBP :-)
As of yesterday, I personally see a Apple “Genius” on the same level as the Petrol Attendants here in Africa that fill up your car! They know you need fuel to be able to drive your car, but that is where their knowledge or drive to figure something out stops. Ok, I am still very upset of having to fork out so much money for nothing. And yes, I do not like Apple personnel anymore, but I cannot live without my Apple machine (that is why I bought another when my old one was thought of being pushing up daisies).
I only managed to do this as for I had a brick lying around and I could not live with the idea that nothing can be done by recovering or downgrading the SMC firmware except for replacing the LogicBoard. I can also not imagine that Apple Personnel do NOT have a low level firmware recovery tool for the MBP 2010 and above models.
Ok, how did I fix it? By pure luck and by putting 1 and 1 together and getting 11 and not two :-)
If you happen to have a SMC firmware update that went bad on your machine, in my case the SMC 1.7 has three models SMC updates in one file and it loaded the wrong version onto my MacBook Pro, you can try the following:
Symptom:
MacBook Pro does not want to power up. You can only hear the CDRom making some noise and screen stays black and MBP powers off again.
Do this only if there is no other way around and when our of Warranty. Do this at your own risk.
The Fix:
Disconnect power
Open MBP and disconnect/remove the battery - close the back cover again
While power is still disconnected, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds and then while pressing and holding the power button, connect the power cable to the MBP.
If you are lucky, your MBP will now power up with the fans blazing at 100% and keyboard backlight will be off. This seems to be a recovery emergency mode or something. If you MBP did not power up, try again. If your MBP does not power up then you have a different problem and don’t need to continue the following steps.
Boot you OSX and go onto the Internet and Download the right SMC firmware version for your MBP from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Mount/Open the .dmg file and copy out the “Firmware”.pkg file.
Use Pacifist or the command line to extract the content of the .pkg file.
In my case the Apple SMC update had three models firmware in the .pkg file and the correct one for the Mid-2010 15” model was in the folder SMC18 or something. Find your correct model firmware for your MBP and copy out the following two files: SmcFlasher.efi and 2010MBP15.smc (the 2010MBP15.smc will be different for other MBP models)
Copy those two files onto the OSX disk drive to a location that you can remember like /User/username/Dowloads/smc or where ever.
Google and search for rEFIt . This is a boot loader app the will take over the boot process when you start up your MBP to enable you to go into a shell utility. Read up on how to install and how to activate the refit utility. When installed and enabled, the next time you reboot your MBP you will see the utility start up before your OSX boots.
If you see the rEFIt utility start after you rebooted the MBP, use the arrow on your keyboard and select shell and press enter. The shell.efi utility will start to boot in a “DOS” like window and after you see something where it wants to configure or setup something, just press ESC to cancel that.
After the util booted, you need to first change to your internel disk with the command “ fs1:” that is F S ONE Colon then Enter, standing for filesystem 1
Now you can change to the folder to where you copied the two firmware files like :
cd Users
cd username
cd Downloads
cd smc
There are different ways of going to the folder or find the place where you put the files.
After finding the folder with the two files you can start the update process.
First need to get the SMC into the right state
SmcFlasher.efi -reset 1
Your MBP fans should now quiet down.
Lets Flash :-)
SmcFlasher.efi -force -LoadApp 2010MBP15.smc -norestart
Your SMC should now be flashing with the right version. Once done, power down the MBP. Power the MBP back on and do a SMC reset and all should be fine now. You can now connect the battery again and start using your MBP.
Hope this helps somebody. No Warranty and this is done AT OWN RISK! -

So I am not sure what is going on?
Anyone have similar situation?
what did u do to get Safari working again for you?
thanksIf you're running 19.7.4, then you're installation is hosed. Safari 5.1.7 is what ships with that version. If you failed to save the ill-designed installer, then you'll have to waste resources installing again (necessitates DLing the entire 3.6+ GB monstrosity).

My Mac Pro 2009 has the wrong time
I have an early 2009 Mac Pro 2.66GHz quad core Xeon processor, 20 GB RAM 2TB HD and a second 2TB HD for backup. Running OS 10.10.2. I have Parallels installed.
Starting with 10.9, I noticed that sometimes the clock was wrong. After the installation of 10.10, it seemed to get worse, although that may be unrelated. I have not seen my exact symptoms described in any posts related to this subject. Here is what I see:
I notice the time is wrong. It is never wrong by a certain number of hours. It can be off by 4 hours and 19 minutes and the next time 7 hours and 12 minutes. The day, however is usually correct. If I open the Date and Time control panel, the "Set date and time automatically" is checked and the Apple US server is chosen. The time is wrong. If I uncheck and then re-check the SD&TA checkbox, the time then corrects. However, a few minutes to hours later, the time will be wrong again. If I leave the Date and Time control panel open, the correct time seems to persist longer but eventually the time goes rogue. I even tried setting the time manually, turning off SD&TA and leaving the machine on without sleeping and it still became corrupted.
I have tried the following
Obviously, set the time and date automatically
Adjusting the time zones
Rebooting
Doing an NVRAM reset
Resetting the SMC
Reinstalling the OS (10.10)
Replacing the battery on the motherboard. When I removed the battery, I tested it and it was fine. I checked the position of the battery and it appears to be correct. It is the correct type of battery and fits perfectly into the slot. Just to be sure, I replaced it again.
Hitting it with a hammer (not really)
I saw some posts relating to the time zone being a problem, but the time is not off by an hourly interval, so that seems less likely. The one thing I thought was that perhaps Parallels is causing some sort of problem, but I could find no posts.
The machine is still great after 6 year. I use it almost every day all day. While this problem is small, it has large consequences because my calendar is off and I'm missing meetings, the time on my emails is weird, my file creation times are off and anything related to time is corrupted. I'm facile with Unix so if the solution involves the command line, so be it. I've had macs since a Centris 650 back in the dark ages 20 years ago but this one has stumped me.
Thanks for any help. You have done all the appropriate things.
There have been reports of odd bugs related to Date & Time when a group of non-standard settings was set (deliberately or "just because") in the "Language & Region" Preferences.
I recommend you actively change those settings to a standard setting (that you do NOT intend to keep, e.g. Europe --United Kingdom), save Changes, close the Preferences pane, then re-Open, change to a standard set of Preferences (that you DO Intend to keep, e.g., Americas -- United States) save changes, close the preference pane, then check and reset the date&time and test. [If I have guessed incorrectly about your location in the world, no offense was intended.] -
Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.
Things I have tried with no succes so far:
Reinstall 10.9.3
Reset power manager/SMC
Zap NVRAM
Puzzled over error logs
Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
Made bootable installer on external drive
Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
Replaced 8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode
Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:
Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
Verified disk with Disk Utility
Repaired permissions with DU
Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.
I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...
Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

I wonder if com.apple.ucupdate.plist is locked?
Thanks for this suggestion, gives me more info to look up.
I can tell this 5,1 really wants to run Mavericks, even running in Mavericks Safe Mode is giving longer battery life already... -
I need help figuring out what is wrong with my Macbook Pro
I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with OS X Mavericks on it and for the past few weeks it has running VERY SLOW! I have no idea what is wrong with it, i have read other discussion forums trying to figure it out on my own. So far i have had no luck in fixing the slowness. When i open applications the icon will bounce in dock forever before opening and then my computer will freeze with the little rainbow wheel circling and circling for a few minutes... and if i try to browse websites it take forever for them to load or youtube will just stop working for me. Everything i do, no matter what i click, the rainbow wheel will pop up! The only thing i can think of messing it up was a friend of mine plugging in a flash drive a few weeks ago to take some videos and imovie to put on his Macbook Pro, he has said his laptop has been running fine though... so idk if that was the problem. Anyways, could someone please help me try something? Thank you!!

I purchased a crucial 256 m4 ssd. it was not working stable at all on my mbp mid 09 15'' 2,53. lags, freeze, read and write speed around 37 mb/s. Crucial said i should try in an other mac and I did a 13'' mbp from mid 10. same specs as mine mbp. It is working awesome there.
The question is that is wrong with my mac?
cause obviously there is something wrong, everything is and were up to date. including EFI, trim, sms, pram.
should i file a claim, (pruchased the mac last year and have 10 months left to do so accroding to the EU law)SMC Reset - check http://www.apple.com/support/macpro
Clean out the insides and especially the graphic card.
Both the 7300GTs could be failing, or X1900 with heat and dust (and causing the system fans to work harder)
