MacBookPro5,2 mid 2009- display flickers and no contrast on start up

After low power shut down the display comes up flickering and looks bled out (as if the brightness is set way to high) Is this something anyone else has noticed? Is it a hardware problem I should be concerned about?  Thanks

Hi ammartq,
Usually such a beep code means there is a problem and this has nothing to do with preinstalled OS version.
So I agree with Tonny and I think you need professional help from an authorized service provider to get rid of this because the guys have professional diagnostic tools to check the hardware.
You can find a list of authorized service providers here:

Good luck! :)

  • IMac 27' Mid 2011 display flickering and going dark

Having bought an iMac 27' in may 2012 I was confronted with a flickering of the screen and the display eventually going dark for a certain amount of time.
Unfortunately the first level support wasn't helpful and the second level support rather rude.
Have taken the iMac to the seller I was told they would have to change the display for € 700,-. Apple would refuse to extend the one year warranty though other people have encountered the same problems obviously after checking in different support forums.
So did anyone find a cheaper solution then just to exchange the whole display? Having to spend half the prize of a new iMac can't be the answer.

Yes, the light comes back after a few minutes or half an hour.
Will try take a screenshot when the display is off again as soon as I get the iMac back from the workshop.
I have decided not to spend so much money on the replacement of the display for the moment. If the light goes off more often I will buy another display (probably a non-apple-product with a better warranty) and connect it to the iMac.
As much as I love the concept of the apple products and the idea of an All-In-One computer (it's my 7th apple in 25 years), I really disliked how they treated me as a customer with a valid complain.
If it just this little cable why would Apple replace the whole display? I'll check if I can fix it myself then.

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

How do I install windows 7 on a macbook pro mid 2009 using bootcamp and no optical drive?
My optical drive is non-functional and I want to dual boot with win7. The only problem is my macbook does not boot from USB at all, even when I hold th ALT key down when it is starting up.
-I have a flashdrive with win7 on it.
-I mounted the ISO of win7 with toast for bootcamp to do its thing.

    Good luck.
Consider this a bump so that hopefully someone with better news spots your thread.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install a 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista version in your Mac. Make sure you downloaded these drivers > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 Also, if you have the Snow Leopard DVD you used to upgrade your Mac or the OS X DVD that came with your Mac, you can use it to install the Boot Camp drivers

  • Imac 21.5 (ver 10.6.8) Display flickers and it goes blank

Display flickers and its brightness automatically increases and decreases intermittently. After some time the Display goes blank and it doesn't appear even after pressing the power button or restarting the PC. At times it does appear after pressing the power button frequently or if the PC is left ON for some time. I am using software ver 10.6.8. Want to whether this problem will be resolved after upgrading it to Mavericks. But I am worried that during the downloading if the display goes off and if I have to restart the PC then I will have to start the downloading from the beginning. Please suggest.

Do you have a 15" mid-2010? If so then your problem is surely...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
             com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro (mid 2009) display glitch?

Hello there, I own a 15" Unibody Macbook pro from mid 2009.
I haven't had many issues with it until recently. I've had occasional overheating, and sleep problems within the last 6 months but I never got it checked.
Yesterday, I opened my Mac from sleep mode and I saw that there were a static-like red and green pixels in place of where normally black and white pixels would be. They are not static in the sense of being in only one place, but they appear like static-- flashing.
Every other colour is as it used to be, displaying perfectly. Everything else on the mac functions as it used to as well.
I cannot figure out what seems to be the problem.
I tried researching extensively for a solution but with no luck. I am not too knowledgeable in the area but I believe the error has something to do with either graphics card or the video cable itself.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, and 9400M graphics card.
I read up that the 2008 model had a faulty NVIDIA graphics card and apple was repairing them for free. Could this be a similar problem?
I unscrewed the casing to reveal the logicboard and located the video cable, however I was too afraid to touch anything in case of making things worse. I didn't note anything too out of the ordinary... but I believe the cable may be not connected properly.
I do not have an external display to test on, but I know it is not an LCD problem (I believe).
What can I do to identify the problem?
I do not have any extended warranty on my Macbook, nor do we have any sort of repair store where I live to get it checked.
If this is a logicboard problem, how do I know? And if so, would replacing it fix the problem, or would I be better off buying a new Macbook?
    Thanks!

Running Apple Hardware Test from your original-issue DVDs would tell you if there were Gross problems with the hardware, including failure of the Video RAM.

  • Mid 2009 MBP Boot and Target Disk problem

    Hello all.
I'm trying to help a friend get his Mid 2009 MBP back on its legs. He dropped it at some point and its condition has been deteriorating since. It has finally come to the fact that his computer simply won't boot into OS X. It has Leopard installed on it still.
We decided to try and get his data off of his computer and when we connect with firewire using target disk mode, it can see his hard drive, but it seems every couple minutes, the disk mounts again. After a while, the longest we've had it on (15 minutes) has had 6 copies of his "Macintosh HD" connected to my computer. You can only access data on the latest mounted drive, and if you try to transfer data, the transfer fails when the drive gets re-mounted the next time.
We've run the hardware diagnostics, both the quick and the extended and neither have found problems with anything, so that's why we figured we could just get his data off the computer and then reload Leopard or Snow Leopard onto it.
Any guesses as to what's happening? Any possible solutions?
I was thinking maybe the hard drive cable, but I don't think that would keep multiple "Macintosh HD"s connected to my computer all at once.
    Thanks for your time.

Is a Genius Bar diagnosis free?
My understanding is that the diagnosis is free. Go to "Got a technical question? Step up to the Genius Bar" (http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/) to read more about their services and how to make an appointment.
    Of note is:
How should I prepare for my appointment?
First, back up your data. (We’re happy to show you how to back up, but remember we’re not responsible for data loss.)
I don't know how this will actually play out in your situation (i.e. they might give same advice as above, have a different approach, or they might ask to do diagnosis - that would likely answer your question as to if data retrieval is possible / practical - just keep in mind that they are not responsible for data loss).
Given that the MBP was dropped and the problems as stated, I would make an appointment. Would like to hear how it all works out.
    Best of luck.

  • 23" cinema Display flickers and goes to black

    Hey all,
I am running two 23" cinema displays and one of them is flickering and going to black. Here is a video of it.
    http://larskoerkemeier.com/MVI_0972.MOV
The curved bands arent there thats just from the filming but what happens is the entire image shifts up very quickly and what you see flash on the bottom is actually the top. It repeats this a couple times and then turns off and then it repeats and after a couple times the display just stays off.
    System:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 6 GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    Thanks,
    -Lars

    Hi-
Try switching the power adapters to see if the problem moves to the other display.
Of course, reconnecting/double checking all connections is a good idea.
Other than that, any references in Console/Logs regarding graphics driver errors?

  • HT5634 Why is Boot Camp 5 not supprted on my mid 2009 MacBoook Pro  and is it ever going to be supported?

I currently have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro. The hardware is perfectly capable of handling Windows 8 Pro without an issue, so why is this model Macbook Pro not supported with Boot Camp 5? Also, are there any plans to support it in the future?
    Thanks.

I did it!  Well it's installing as we speak.  Craziness.  My mid 09 MBP started to not read my DVD with the ISO file for windows 8, I'll tell you what, those cleaning discs you can buy made my SuperDrive work again, thank god, I was getting really frustrated.  Here's what I did.
-open bootcamp assistant 5.0. (If your on 10.8.3 like I unluckily at this time was)
    -click install windows 7
    -partition the space you want
-here's the clincher, if you have a windows 8 install disc, bootcamp will not proceed, you need to have a windows 7 iso, which you can find on the net, it's not piracy if you don't intend to license it, we are just using it to "trick" bootcamp to partition our drive correctly.
-your MBP will restart and go into windows 7 install mode
    - click the x to cancel the win7 installation, it warns you it will restart.
-upon restart, you'll hear the beloved Mac chime, immediately hold down the "option" key
-you'll now see your main startup disk, and recovery disk, hit eject and yank that trick or treater win7 disc and insert your windows 8 disc
-wait a bit and you'll see the windows disc icon pop up next to your main startup and recovery disk.
-click the windows disc and install!
*you may have to plug a wired mouse in at this time, my touchpad will move the cursor, but clicks are not recognized...yet
-------my install is almost complete, I will post results here for any other orphaned by apple and win8 mid 09 MacBook Pro users.  There will be some driver work we must do next I'm sure.

  • MBP mid 2009, Mountain Lion and PRESONUS FP10

    Hello!
I have an opportunity to buy used Presonus FP10, but I am not sure is it completely compatible with my MBP - mid 2009, CORE 2 DUO and Mountain Lion and Logic Pro 9???
It is very good interface but a bit outdated, so I am worried! I don't want to spend my money if it won't work on my MAChine!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Damon
I gave up from buying it. As I didn't get any valid information about FP, I stopped thinking about it. I've been looking all over the Internet and came up with Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Somehow, I find it even better choice, so we will see it tomorrow! I hope it is boxed with Firewire Adapter (400-800), too. It is 777 KM which is about 500 $.
    Is it worth the money?
If it is compatible with Lion, I assume it should work with ML, too!

  • T61 - display flickers and gets green

    Hi,
I have a one and a half year old T61. Since last weekend I have several problems with the display.
There flicker some lines and some rows in different colors, the display does not start at the upper left corner, and sometimes there is something like a green cloud at the bottom that gets bigger and fills all the screen. So normaly I can't see anything at the display.
Only when I rotate the display back and forward it sometimes gets into a normal mode. With an extern display everything is ok.
These problems already start while booting and showing the BIOS screen, so it should not be the operating system.
I'm not quite sure what really makes the problems. Is it the display it self or only the connection from the mainboard to the display? What could I do to fix this problem?
    Greets, Baba

have you considered Thinkplus warranty, which is a post warranty warranty? It would be cheaper that way.
Alternatively, you can do it yourself, you can get the part from the net, and then follow this manual to change out the LCD.

  • Qosmio G30 display flickering and unable to log into Windows

I have to press F5 to make the display visible everytime I boot up. I thought that it was a software related issue and I tried to format the HDD with original recovery CD. However, the screen keeps flickering from the BIOS stage.
Now, it is even worse. The screen is flickering when power up and I cannot log into Windows MCE after the HDD formated.
After reading the related articles and FAQ, I suspect it was a graphic card (hardware) issue.
My graphic card is NVidia Go7600. Is this true and is it a must to change the hardware (graphic card)?
Appreciate your advice before I contact the local support team.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi!
Thats a strange issue. Do you have the same problems on an external monitor?
If a display is flickering, the display itself is defective because the FL-tube is causing the error. I think the best is, when an ASP (authorized service provider) checks your Qosmio G30.
Here you can search for one:

    Good luck
