MacBookPro5,5
Hello. I have a 2009 model 13" MacBook Pro 5,5 with a 2.53GHz Core2Duo running OS 10.6.7 (fully updated). The internal hard disk that was packaged with the computer at the time of purchase is a Fujitsu MJA2250BH FFS G1 and the file system is Journaled, HFS+. The capacity is 249.7 GB with 235.3 GB currently available.
Lately, I have been experiencing a sporadic system failure, in which any attempted action that involves writing to the internal Serial-ATA (e.g., moving, saving, or deleting a file) produces the following error message: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." Hard disk write operations continue to fail until the system is rebooted at which point the hard drive seems to function normally for a period of time until the error message inevitably re-appears (usually within a few hours), mandating another reboot.
After experiencing this problem for a few weeks and failing to resolve it by fixing disk permissions, I formatted the hard disk and reinstalled OS X last night, including all OS and software updates from Apple. Then, within a few hours of use, the message recurred.
Is this a known problem? The error message is entirely uninformative so it is difficult to investigate. Given the recurrence of the problem despite reformatting the hard drive and beginning from a clean slate, is this a sign of hard disk failure? My presumption is "yes." Are there any other actions I might try besides acquiring a new hard disk from Apple?
My gratitude in advance.
-AB
PS. A bit more information that may or may not be useful in diagnosis:
The only software I have installed since reformatting is Adobe Acrobat 9.0, and when the hard disk failure occurs, I become unable to modify PDF documents (e.g., adding a highlight, drawing a box) irrespective of an attempt to save the file. Upon clicking one of the tools for adding comments or markup, I receive a similar message: "There was a Macintosh system error (-50)." I am able to navigate through the file system using Finder without issue and I am able to open files (e.g., PDF documents). However, upon trying to close said document (without trying to save), I receive the following error message in Adobe Acrobat: "The Organizer database is damaged and will be reset the next time Acrobat is launched. Quit the application and close any currently opened web browsers."
Also, Spotlight, which normally works quite appropriately, will only display a single entry corresponding to the Definition of the search query (referencing the Mac Dictionary). No files, folders, or applications are displayed in Spotlight.
All of these aberrant behaviors continue until rebooting the system, at which point they are temporarily abolished.

I would say do a full zero data reformat and reinstall OS X. This should fix any disk-related problems assuming the drive has not suffered a true mechanical failure. Backup your data first just in case.
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

Macbook Pro mid 2009 will not boot unless SMC is reset (macbookpro5,5)
Hello!
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro (macbookpro5,5) and I've had this weird issue for like a month, and I ran out of ideas.
So my problem is: whenever I turn on my mbp (either on OS X or Windows 7) it will go to sleep (on OS X after it shows the login screen and on Windows when it's loading) and when it wakes up, *it goes to sleep again*!
I kinda panicked back then because I couldn't get to boot the machine for all what was worth, but then I tried resetting the SMC and voila! it booted; and I thought that was it, but no, it wasn't: *I have to reset the SMC everytime I turn on the mbp*, or else the same sleeping loop will happen again and again.
This happened after installing the first March Update that Apple released (which misteriously only addressed iTunes issues - supposedly) on OS X. I already tried looking for SMC or EFI updates (just in case) and I already have the current versions (just EFI, SMC updates were never released for this mbp) so now I have no clue on what to do...
And what really puzzles me is that I disabled sleep when closing the lid on Windows 7, and it worked fine, but after this issue, it just goes to sleep, even when I see the closing the lid option on "do nothing", it's just weird.
Does anybody had some sort of trouble like that?? or anyone has some hints that may help me??
Message was edited by: piku9000Well, it seems that apple fixed this issue in the 10.6.7 update. I kinda wish there was a little more documentation about the patches released and what files they modify, since no update was released to the SMC, I have no idea why it had to modify it. Anyway, thanks for the help!

Is 8gb of RAM in one memory slot possible for a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4?
I have a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4 and recently bank 1 stopped recognizing any ram installed in the slot (similar to this issue https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4263981).
I originally thought it was a bad module and tried different 2x4GB paired ram kits but same issue. Only one bank seems to work now. I really need at least 8gb or ram for work and I'm not quite ready to shell out for a new laptop. So I'm wondering if I can salvage this machine by putting a single 8gb module on the one bank that still works.
Has anyone tried this?An interesting question. I found this which you may find of interest:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1045517
It seems to suggest that it may, but I see it a bit of a crap shoot.

Is the Samsung 850 EVO not compatible with this MacBook Pro? Has anyone installed it and found it to work fine for a few months?
Has anyone faced boot-partition corruptions, problems when installing Yosemite updates with this SSD - on reboot, SSD partition became unmountable for me after the installing Yosemite update 10.10.2 (14C1510).
I am trying to understand whether
mine happens to be a defective drive - in which case I have the option of getting a refund from seller and ordering a replacement (same make+model), OR
I should return this one and go for a Crucial/OWC/other SSD
Details:
MacBookPro5,5 Yosemite 10.10.2
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB
I purchased this drive and installed it in my MacBookPro about a week ago.
Since then I have repeatedly run system-reported data corruptions on the SSD.
One obvious sign of the corruption is that on powering-on the laptop, it will stall for a long time (5 to 30 minutes! - normally it would boot up in about 30 seconds) after the grey/black Apple-logo and status bar appear on the white-background boot-screen.
Another way I see this is by running Disk Utility's 'verify disk' operation.. Reports serious errors and asks me to reboot in recovery-mode with Cmd-R to repair the partition.
I have erased and re-installed the OS (Yosemite) several times on it already because sometimes the Recovery-Partition's Disk Utility cannot repair the errors - asks me to backup and erase+format. The repair operation does not always succeed *.
This is happening often and without any pattern **.
Several times on the latest install, I have booted up in single-user mode and run fsck -fy: till yesterday, this was still occasionally finding and successfully repairing issues (after which I run fsck a couple more times to confirm).
Seems to be running fine today.
* I am re-installing off of a TimeMachine backup.
But I don't think that is causing the trouble: verify-disk on the original backup reports no errors, and even the computer itself passes "verify"/"fsck -fy" several times over before failing in the same way again after an hour or 2 of actual use.
** On one occasion, after an OS update (latest OS X security patches) succeeded and reboot completed, verify-disk again asked for the Cmd-R recovery-mode repair - which failed to repair the errors.
Also, if I as much as launch the Yosemite installer while booted up, then even after quitting (without proceeding beyond the initial screen), the SSD fails completely again requiring to be erased. Happened twice with installers involved, but corruptions even without installers did happen.I loaded the Samsung 850 into my 2012 i5 Macbook Pro and it's been working well since I installed a few days ago. The only concern I have is that on boot up I get a white screen for around 30 seconds before it begins the startup with the apple and progress bar. That's odd, because when I installed an SSD on my older 2009 Macbook a few years ago that laptop booted up almost instantaneously when I pushed the power button.
I loaded the system on the SSD by cloning, rather than using Time Machine and it worked without a hitch. Used Carbon Copy Cloner in trial mode after formatting the SSD with Disk Utilities. Not sure if your problem may stem from using Time Machine. The cloning apps will usually adjust the data on the new drive based on available space, so if your SSB is a different size than the original HDD, it would automatically correct. Not sure about TIme Machine.
I'll keep researching about the startup lag when I turn on my Macbook Pro with the 850. Seems it should boot up right away with the SSD, but maybe it's because the 850 uses the new vertical stacking configuration. That's the only thing I can think of that's different from the last SSD I installed in my old Macbook. -
Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.
Things I have tried with no succes so far:
Reinstall 10.9.3
Reset power manager/SMC
Zap NVRAM
Puzzled over error logs
Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
Made bootable installer on external drive
Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
Replaced 8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode
Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:
Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
Verified disk with Disk Utility
Repaired permissions with DU
Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.
I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...
Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

[Solved] Beachballs on late 2008 15" MacBook Pro MacBookPro5,1 with SATA II HD
Each time I upgraded hard disks in my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro ( MacBookPro5,1 ) I experienced increasing beachballs. The worst was my recent upgrade to a Seagate 1TB SSD hybrid drive.
I had lived with this pain for years and it appears a simple jumper change could have solved it. In my opinion all or at least some models of the late 2008 MacBook 15" Pros do not reliably support SATA II 3 Gbit/second.
See jumper diagram for Seagate drives. Note the diagram is showing drive laying hard disk circuit board side up. Other manufacturers may differ.
http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...language=en_US
From what I uderstand my late 2008 MacBook Pro was designed to support SATA II 3 Gbit/second with it's Nvidia chip set. In fact every model from late 2008 appears to have support for SATA II.
Then in early 2011 they added support for SATA III 6 Gbit/sec which the 1TB ST1000LM014 hybrid drive also supports. ( Hopefully they got SATA III right in their first 2011 model year. ) Unfortunately for me I do not think they got SATA II right in their first late 2008 model year.
I hope this may help someone avoid the pain I experienced,

<Edited By Host>Hi Mike,
I am not sure it is same issue if drive is not even recognized. But I would not give up hope. I know my late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 has this problem even though it was designed to work at SATA II 3 Gbit/second. It may be possible that your 2009 model has a similar issue.
If the jumper works for you, then please cut and paste your MacBook's Hardware Overview. It would be nice to see the Serial-ATA hardware too. Go to:

Anyone has tried upgrading to Mountain Lion on MacBookPro5,5?
So, yeah, as I asked on the topic – Has anybody tried upgrading to Mountain Lion on MacBookPro5,5?
If you've upgraded, I would like to know these information
How long is the Battery life?
Is everything smooth as on Lion?
Any troubles on upgrading?First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.
The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion. -
MacBookPro5,2 Install Disks on Older Macbook Yes/No ?
*MY MAIN QUESTION: Will the new Macbook Pro Disks work to install OS X on an older Macbook.*
HEllo all,
I use a classic white macbook 1,1 & I just recently purchased a new hard drive and I want to install it soon, but I seem to have misplaced my install disks to my computer.
Now my mate just recently purchased a "MacBookPro5,2" and I was wondering if his instal disks will work properly with my new hard drive once I install it, and make sure I don't need the old disks. Will the new Macbook Pro Disks work to install OS X on an older Macbook.
No. Clone the existing system to the new drive or order replacements from Apple(1-800-SOS-APPL in the United States) if you can't find the original disks.

MacBookPro5,5 washed out colors and lack of uniformity, as compared to v3,1
I have a MacBookPro5,5 13' inch, since last July. Since I bought the computer I have been greatly disappointed with how washed out the colors are, and the lack of the uniformity of the display across the board. The screen has been replaced once by the Apple Store, and the new one seems better, but the problem still persists.
I have been a Mac User since 1994, and have never has quality issues of this sort with Apple Products. I also have a MacBookPro3,1 and the quality of the display is perfect as compared to this new one.
I'm at odds on what my next step shall be, since it seems the quality on the other new laptops at the Apple Store are experiencing the same issues. Shall I request for my money to be returned? Though I feel that might be an up hill battle at this point.
I'm really looking for some advice, since this laptop is clearly not up to par with my entire Apple experience.
Regards
Message was edited by: Jorge NollaIt sounds like LR is trying to use your display profile and cannot for some reason. If your calibration is based on a manufacturer-supplied profile for your display, that could be the problem because many manufacturer-supplied profiles are not compatible LR.
What I’d suggest is set your display profile to sRGB-whatever in the Color Management applet in Control Panel, then reboot, then run through the Windows display calibration procedure, again. This will make a display profile based on the standard sRGB profile instead of whatever you were using, before.
Here is a document that describes how to switch your display profile to sRGB in Windows 7, which would be similar to Windows 8:

MacBookPro5,5 upgrade and Lion
I have a mid 200913.3” MacBookPro5,5 with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz processor and 2*1GB DDR 31066MHz of memory.
I have boughtthe mac to 2*2GB Crucial DDR3 1066MHz CT2KIT25664BC1067 memory and a 96GB Kington V+100 SATAIISSD in order to give a boost midway through it’s life.
As a result I amworking if I should take advantage and upgrade to Lion and take full advantageof the OSX 10.7, iCloud and iOS5 integrations however I have been hearing thereare some teething issues with Lion, such as the flash videos not playingcorrectly in Safari.
Also I amhearing that the pre Intel iSeries (i3/5/7) processors are struggling Lion’sincreased processing requirements and I ask the members of this forum that it mightbe better to stay with Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8)? Has anyone had experience ofusing Lion on with the same generation MacBook Pro? How was it? Did you haveany issues? Would you recommendations it either way?
Objective andimpartial advice only please.Just be tempered by the fact that these forums are like the emergency ward of a hospital. Only sick and injured people come. So you are asking for responses from mostly emergency room patients.

MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightne
MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightness setting. Definitely noticeable and annoying when using the lowest power settings to extend battery life during school usage. Has been happening since I got the machine.
Also new out of the box the screen isn't aligned properly with the base of the unit. Like it got knocked around during manufacture, anyone have this issue?
Also my serial number does not show up in Apple's systems as a sold machine even though I have a proof of purchase. I called 800 APL CARE to resolve the issue, they were looking into it and haven't gotten back to me either, this was weeks ago....
Anyone think I should buy APP?Your underpowered system may get by if you edit SD DV material, but is way out of its league when editing AVCHD or Red or DSLR material.
Without further info to go on, you have the following problems:
Not enough memory
No dedicated nVidia video card
Insufficient PSU
No hard disks
About the only thing good about your system is the CPU, but there it ends. Everything else needs to be improved. How much depends on your source material, your workflow, your destination format and all those data were severely missing.

HT1237 MacBook Pro model: MacBookPro5,4 firmware update
I looked up the system report for my MacBook Pro and is listed: MacBookPro5,4. I am not seeing that model listed for firmware updates. How do I find the firmware update for my model?
Try downloading the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo. First do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now reinstall with the combo updater. -
SSD in old MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3) - worry about NVIDIA controller issue?
Hi!
I have the old MacbookPro5,3 - (Core2Duo 2,66 GHz with 8GB RAM), so a SSD would really make it go for another year og two. I do realize that I will not benefit of the full speed of the SSD because the machines max speed is SATA2/3GB/s: That's no problem - but I really can't be bothered with any problems like not be able to use it properly or the "slow" 1,5 GB/s-problem that some people have reported..
As fas as I can read this problem orginated from the NVIDIA controller (AHCI).
So my questions are:
- Have this problem been fixed, e.g. by driver upgrades from Apple or something else?
- Do all never SSDs have this problem fixed, or is it still an issue?
- Should I look at some specific drives or brands to avoid this spefic problem with compability with the NVIDIA controller..?
I'm looking at Samsung 840 256GB or Intel 530 180GB.. If the problem is specific to some drives and you would mind giving me some advice in that case..?
Thanks a lot for any inputs!I have the same machine and installed a TOSHIBA THNSNC512GBSJ (from system report) and was amazed at the improvement in speed. Added a good two years of life to my MBP. Apparently this wasn't the fastest drive, but I valued the improvement in booting times and application start up. I got it from OWC on sale at the time so it was an excellent price too.

Greetings to All,
I am facing a very strange thing on my Macbook Pro 5.1
To start this is my information of my Machine:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.41f2
Serial Number (system): --------------
Hardware UUID: -----------
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
As you can see the SMC version is 1.41f2 but when is go to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237
Where you can download the latest EFI and SMC version is different!!!
What i should have is :
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
MacBookPro5,1
MBP51.007E.B06 (EFI 2.8)
1.33f8 (SMC 1.2)
So the EFI is Correct but the SMC is wrong.....
Can Please someone give me a solution on this?
The laptop is heating very much at 81 celsius ( not all the time but is not normal when i just watch a movie or youtube....)
And the buttery does not last or goes from 50% down to 10% within 2 minutes....and the battery has 66 cycles...
Thank you all in advance!!Greetings,
Sorry for my late reply but was out of the town.
I live in a place where Apple Store in not an Option. I have to travel to Athens that means 3 hours and costs... I have to take it there and go to take it back....
I have checked all over the internet and the same results found about the versions so i think what is written by Apple is correct. So does anyone knows how can i install the correct SMC Firmware? Anyone?
As i mentioned i download the correct one but when i try to install it says in not needed for my system.....
and that is normal because i have installed ( I DID NOT INSTALLED I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPEND) 1.41f2 and the correct one is : 1.33f8 so it checks the version and since the one i try to install is older does not install....
Please help
