MACBOOKS SUCK?

i installed warcraft 3. reign of chaos works but i cant start frozen throne ??????

I concur...
its blizzard that released a awful patch that breaks support for TFT.
My macbook runs ROC like a dream so it is obviously not the program. WoW also is more than playable. Its just that blizzard can't make a patch right the first time if they tried.

    welcome to apple forums
you obviosly going to get biased opinions but..
i just finished high school and have a macbook (upgrading to a pro in a week) but yea. i use word and msn and mess around and macbooks are AWESOME so much better than pc's. faster, more reliable, cleaner, just better. and you will be blown away by OS X. what i would be concerned about is games....macbooks suck basically. only thing i play is football manager (sorry soccer!) and the sims.
not sure if thats an issue for you, buu bear it in mind

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • Macbook just started sucking down bandwidth even when I'm not doing anythin

Ok so in the past 2 days my Macbook has started to suck down bandwidth. apparently i'm downloading even when my computer is just sitting there. it's about 1 mg per minute. My hard drive is partitioned with Windows XP on one side, but I rarely ever use the XP side.
Is it possible that I have a trojan or spyware or something on the Windows side running even if I'm not using that side?
I've removed Limewire and BitTorrent from my system but that hasn't stopped it. I've run Little Snitch and iAntiVirus, but neither found anything. I ran spybot S+D on the Windows side but it only found a few things that i deleted.
What could be causing this bandwidth suckage?

  • Running 6.0.2 with MAC OS 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro and Firefox crashes and crashes and crashes and crashes. What have you done to your software? It sucks.

Running the new and improved 6.0.2 with Mac OS 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro and Firefox keeps crashing. When I have Yahoo on my screen with MY FAVORITES on the left side I can't click on ANY of my favorites without a crash. I can hardly navigate anywhere without a crash. Have a MacBook Air running same OS and same Firefox with no problems. So what gives? What is happening and what should I do to fix this?

something similar has been happening to me for a a couple weeks (even before the most recent update, but now is definitely worse) on my 2010 MacBook Air. Firefox freezes upon startup, and then freezes maybe every twenty minutes or so when I'm actively using it, staying frozen for at least a minute or two. it drives me crazy.

  • Why do Hulu videos run great on a 2009 Macbook Pro, but suck on my 1-week-old Macbook?

I just bought a new Macbook pro.  I've installed the latest version of flash player, and streaming videos are jumpy and jerky.  It's subtle (my wife has a hard time noticing it), but it is there.  It's much more noticeable when I play the same video side-by-side on our old Macbook...
Meanwhile, our 2009 Macbook pro plays videos very well.  It's such a dinosaur that we can't even update the flash player or the web browsers anymore.
The new Macbook is running OSX 10.9.3 (Maverick, IIRC), and flash was installed yesterday (version 14.0.0.125).  The jerky video play happens in both Safari and Firefox.
The old Macbook is running OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard), and Flash 10.3.183.15
So, how can I make my new computer work "right?"

There are multiple reasons that lead to issue. You should read the troubleshooting guide to get the right solution to solve the issue: iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support

  • HELP! My MacBook Air sucked dry 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space!!!

I use DaisyDisk and found out that I've lost 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space being hidden as displayed in the attach captured image.
Can someone tell me how you resolve this issue and retrieve back the hidden disc space? Why are they hidden and used up so much of space? I do Time Machine backup every night I get back home. It never happen to my MacBook Pro... Pls help!...

Well, I went into the Disk Utility and veryfy the drive and the error messages appeared as per the attach captured image below:
I then restart the computer and hold down "Command+R" till the "Apple Logo" appears and releases the keys.
I selected the bottom most option (Disk Repair) and selected the volume and clicked "Repair Disk". Within 5 mins, the (green color) message reads "Your disk repaired successfully" and I gain back all my lost/hidden spaces to what I should be getting...
Kappy, thanks for your prompt reply. Really appreciated it. Cheers!

  • Just a general comment, I've gone totally Apple--iPhone, MacBook Pro, iPad and iPod.  I'm seriously thinking of going back after a few years since I've spent a fortune and can't change now.  If Apple is so bloody wonderful, why do they suck so badly?

As a continuation above, who are the people who have been praising Apple to the heavens?  For those of us who aren't tech-savvy, Apple totally blows.  There is next to nothing intuitive about their products and they seem giddy about giving their customers extra steps for everything.  Why can't I sync my iPhone seamlessly?  Why do I always run the risk of deleting my music when I want to sync?  Why are there so many steps in creating ringtones?  Why does the right-click on the mouse have so few options?  Why do I have to click upwards of twenty times on desktop icons to get the file to emerge?  Again, I'm not a techie but it seems that Apple is made for people with master's degrees in software programming.  I've spent a small fortune on Apple products because Microsoft has become a lumbering dinosaur populated by zit-covered nerds with no concept of how the general public works.  Do I go back, especially with that abortion, Windows 8?  Or do I wait for the next iteration since Microsoft can only create a decent product with every other release?
I'd like to know what others think.  Granted, I'm upset right now, but I've been getting more and more frustrated with Apple.  We need a third company out there, kinda like a third political party.

why do i even bother posting on this.. i just got a correct response from the help team. yes i can do something about it. get a new processor, exchange, sell or replace. that's the answer i was looking for.
i CAN do something about it, just like i could with my windows laptop, iphone and old ipod. It's sorted.
I got the response I was looking for. It's not an issue. New models come out all the time, i agree, but i have exchanged and sorted this out every time, like my iphone 4 to the 4S. and an apple advisor helped me with this.
My question was a genuine question - and funnily enough - the Apple helpline thought it was too.

  • Should I keep my MacBook Pro or exchange it for more Ram and SSD space?

    Hello,
I decided to purchase a MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina display. I thought I would just bite the bullet and get it with the upgraded 16gb Ram and 512 SSD as I want this computer to last me at least 5 years. I don't know exactly what I will be using it for but potentially I will be running a small business with it as well as using it for photos, some videos and all the other things we all use everyday. This brought the total price tag up to about $2900 before tax. Way more than I wanted to spend, but again, I plan on this being my last computer purchase for at least 5 years...and this would be my only computer...not a secondary one but the primary one.
As I was asking the guy in Best Buy about any sales or discounts, he mentioned a MacBook Pro with retina display that was just retuned to the store by a lady that decided to go with a MacBook Air instead.  It had been opened but not used and was in perfect condition. The sales manager said he could sell that one to me for $470 off the normal price. The problem was, it was the base model and only had 8gb Ram and 256gb SSD storage. So, I had the option of buying the computer I wanted...that I know would last me for years and years, for $2,900 OR buy the base model for $1,729. What would you do?
I decided to buy the base model as it was just to good a deal to pass up. Now, 2 days later, I don't know if I made the right decision. I know that 256gb of memory is not going to last me very long...especially considering how much more space modern software takes up nowadays...and its only getting worse. My solution is to just buy an external hard drive and store everything I don't immediately need on it. But I don't know if I'm being realistic as maybe it will be a major pain to constantly have to carry around an extra storage device. Then again, even if I had the 512 SSD model MacBook, I would still eventually run out of space and need an external drive. Has anyone else relied on an external device for their daily computing needs? Is it a major nuisance or easy to get by with?
My bigger concern is that it only has 8gb of Ram and can NOT be upgraded in the future. 8gb ram is fine right now, especially with the flash drive and i7 quad core processor, but in a couple years, I'm afraid  it won't be enough and that ill be forced to purchase another computer. The sales manager said that because its a Mac and because of the "monster processor" that the 8gb of Ram will be more than enough for years to come. According to him, Macs require less Ram than PC's due to their operating system being much more efficient. (This is my first Mac so I'm a bit unfamiliar)
So this is my dellima, should I return the base model and buy the one I originally wanted or should I make do with the base model and be thankful for the great deal I was able to get?
Will the 8gb of Ram be enough in a few years? I realize that depends on what I'm using the computer for but, since I'm not sure what my needs will be in the next year, lets assume I'll be using it to run a small business as well as the typical storage of pictures and home videos, etc.
Bottom line, will the 8gb of ram be enough to prevent the need to buy another computer for another 5 years or so or do I need to suck it up, return the base model, pay the extra $1,100 and get the 16gb of ram I originally wanted?
Sorry for the long story, I just need some solid advice as money is tight and I want to make the right decision. I'd rather pay $1,100 extra now and not need to buy a new computer for 5-6 years than save the money now but have to buy a whole new computer in 1-2 years.  If however, the 8gb ram will still make for a solid computer in a few years, I will gladly save the money.
Thanks in advance for your help. ;-)

    Generally (and in my opinion):
    1) do not buy any computer you cannot replace the hard drive and the RAM in.
    2) do NOT (EVER, EVER, EVER) purchase RAM or expended hard drive from any vendor (like Apple, Dell, etc).  they mark up the RAM
purchase the lowest machine that will work for you and upgrade the RAM and hard drive down the road.    Just look at the price Apple charges for the upgrade from 4GB to 8 GB:
Apple is charging the (4GB RAM + $100) for the 8GB upgrade.  You can easily get 8GB for $100.  later you should be able to get 8GB for $60.
Same thing for the hard drives:
Applis charging the price of (500GB + $100) for the 750GB drive.  I just bought a 750GB notebook drive for $99
I, personally, would return the retina notebook for a MacBookPro that you can upgrade the hd and ram

  • Get the Dell EVDO Express Card working on a Macbook Pro - here's how

    I found this here:
    http://svenontech.com/2006/06/11/get-ev-do-access-on-your-macbook-pro-now-from-v erizon-via-your-xv6700/
On the Mac side, you’ll first need to pair your XV6700 and Mac to each other. You should be able to do this easily, but if you need some help, check out Apple’s site for direct documentation on how to do this. When pairing, select “Other” device from the list, not “Phone”.
Once paired, the last screen will ask if you wish to use the device as a modem and headset. Uncheck headset (unless you wish to use your phone to communicate with others on applications such as Skype.) Now follow these instructions for setting up the modem:
Username: (Your full phone number) [email protected]
    Password: vzw
    Phone Number: #777
Mode Script: au cdmaOne Bluetooth Adapter
    Leave all check boxes checked
    Click CONTINUE
    Click QUIT
You’re now all set on the Mac side. You’ll now see a phone with a dot slash icon on your menu bar. Select it and choose “Connect”. Remember to have your XV6700 on, Bluetooth enabled, and the WMmodem application running Bluetooth mode with the START button activated. If all this is the case, you’ll be connected in seconds and your modem icon will display a counter next to it once connected. Enjoy the EV-DO!
Can someone verify that this works? I have a Dell Card on order.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    David,
    Thanks for the response.
Before I read this I went to the apple store and tried some BT file transfers to another Mac and experienced the same results. I then went to the Sony store and tested it on a XP laptop and experienced the same speeds. I am able to achieve twice that rate when doing mac to mac BT transfere. I know my MBP has BT 2.0, but I didn't think my first generation Mini was 2.0.
I am able to sync via USB with Mark/Space's Missingsync, but it doesn't appear that they support DUN. I will email them, to see if they will consider it.
I just bought my 6700, so I still have the choice to return it. I am not sure if I should get another device that currently supports EVDO DUN via USB or suck it up and hope someone makes a usb dun driver for the 6700.
    Thanks again.
    Ben

  • Terrible performance on my Macbook

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on my white 13.3" Macbook. It has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor. I had been using the 512 MB of memory that came with it until a few weeks ago I decided to buy 2 GB from Crucial to speed things up...but you could argue it's just as bad if not worse...(and I know I installed it correctly). It also has a SATA 60 GB HD with about 18 GB of free space (is that enough?).
It will idle repeatedly (you know, the spinning beach ball, spinny rainbow ball, whatever you want to call it). At any given time I'm usually only running 2 or 3 programs, but it happens just as much if I'm just running one (especially Safari). It seems to happen randomly no matter what programs I have open. The ball will spin for about 30 seconds or more every time then stop and everything is fine again. But this happens over and over and over at random times. Usually I can't even force quit while this is happening (the box doesn't pop up til after the program returns to a responding state). I could be clicking a link, scrolling, typing in any program, doing literally anything including doing nothing and it still happens. Sometimes this won't happen at all and run real fast for hours at a time, then suck for hours without any drastic change in my usage. I can't seem to figure out what actions I'm taking to cause it. It's completely random.
There has to be some processes running in the background and I just can't pinpoint what they are and I'm out of ideas. If no one can help me I'm just going to do a OS reinstall (again) and hope for the best. Please help...

Sometimes posts get lost in this forum as it is a pretty busy one.
You have also tried the basics, so those reponses never came.
    Whenever I have your issue, I do the following;
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
Also, run your Apple Hardware Test to check your new RAM or take it out and see if it works better. Many here say that the free Rember RAM tester is better.
And the last tip, try things in this Spinning Beachball Link.

  • Why does my mid-2010 Macbook Pro suffer from huge FPS drops whenever I try to play games?

    Macbook info: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, nVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB
When I play games on my Macbook Pro, such as League of Legends, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, etc., they operate well with latency of ~80ms usually and fps starting off between 30-60, but after only a couple seconds or minutes my fps drops to 5-15 and the games become unplayable and I must force quit the program. Restarting the computer helps temporarily but then it relapses.
I cleaned out all my downloads, applications, and other deletable files that I could find. I installed and updated Mavericks OS X and the issue persists. Before I installed Mavericks I noticed in Activity Monitor that almost all of my memory was in use while playing a game. After Mavericks the memory is almost all permanently in use, but from what I've read this is what is supposed to happen and instead of looking at memory in use you look at memory pressure, which looks normal.
I was going to upgrade from 4GB RAM (current) to 8GB RAM and see if that helps but idk if that has anything to do with my fps issue or not. Any thoughts?

Alright well I'm definitely not running virus scans or doing system backups and then complaining about slow performance.... The only other application running besides whatever game i'm playing is SMC fancontrol to make sure my computer isn't overheating.
In terms of CPU%, games like WoW and LoL take ~50-60% of CPU while active, but activity monitor still reports ~80% idle. For disk activity, i'm not sure whether it uses optical or not, I assume i just uses the hard drive, which is brand new cus it broke down about a month ago and I had to replace it (the fans are brand new as well, so I don't think it could be build up of dust or anything inside because it was opened and cleaned so recently).
I can set all graphics setting to lowest possible and improve my fps to 20, which is still awful, and enabling vertical sync just sends it back down to 15 fps. I don't see why I should have to use lowest graphics settings anyway. It can't be out of date drivers since i have 10.9.1 running. Could the graphics card be the issue? That would suck since I can replace and upgrade RAM but not the graphics card.
I have repaired disk and disk permissions multiple times, virus scans, the whole gambit and nothing seems to help.

  • My MacBook Pro be ballin' - beachballin' that is. Big freeze problems.

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has decided to start freezing up and beachballing whenever I use Skype, Mail, Plex and sometimes when I use Launchbar. Usually my MacBook locks up for anything from several seconds to a few minutes, making it nearly impossible to get even basic things done. Typically, whenever I load up or type something into the above apps is when it locks up. Mail just locks up whenever I do anything when it's in the foreground. If I leave these apps open, the freezing spreads to other apps I regularly use, such as Safari, or even Activity Monitor or the Force Quit Window when I'm trying to diagnose the problem and quit the problem apps.
It's happened to me a couple of times before over the past year, and I thought I'd fixed it by deleting then reinstalling Skype and Growl (which was also slowing things down a lot) using AppZapper. But that hasn't helped much this time.
It was getting so bad that I tried deleting all my plist files in ~/Library/Preferences, in the hope it was a corrupt plist file. But the same apps cause the same slowdown after having done that, too. Actually, Skype and Launchbar seem a little bit better now. Skype hangs now after I press enter to send a message in Skype. Actually typing is (sometimes, but not always) OK. Launchbar only hangs for a few seconds, and not all the time now. Mail is still awful.
Looking in Console, which I'm not very familiar with, brings up some recurring messages that don't look good:
(I'm not sure if this one is relevant, but it keeps appearing every few seconds)
    18/09/2010 14:20:44 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.jft.PdaNetMac[13262]) posix_spawnp("/Applications/PdaNetMac.app/Contents/MacOS/PdaNetMac", ...): No such file or directory

    18/09/2010 14:20:44 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.jft.PdaNetMac) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
18/09/2010 14:20:50 org.apache.httpd[13263] (2)No such file or directory: httpd: could not open error log file /private/var/log/apache2/error_log.
    18/09/2010 14:20:50 org.apache.httpd[13263] Unable to open logs
The weird thing is I deleted pdanet ages ago. And searching in Launchbar, Spotlight and Houdahspot shows no relevant pdanet files other than my web receipt for buying it. The above error message keeps repeating ad infinitum.
I suspect these errors have more to do with the problem:
    18/09/2010 15:17:27 Skype[14047] Error loading /Library/QuickTime/DigitalVoodoo.component/Contents/MacOS/VoodooSDDV10: dlopen(/Library/QuickTime/DigitalVoodoo.component/Contents/MacOS/VoodooSDDV10, 262): Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/DigitalVoodooLib.framework/Versions/A/DigitalVoodooLib

18/09/2010 15:17:31 Skype[14047] AppDelegate::checkAppFirstRun: error on NSPropertyListSerialization of old_plist: stream had too few bytes
18/09/2010 15:17:51 Skype[14047] Failure with ATSFontGetUnicodeCharacterCoverage(). Disabling font fallback optimization for characters not renderable.
These errors keep repeating as long as I have Skype open.
This message kept repeating when I opened Mail just now:
18/09/2010 15:50:30 Mail[14568] Failure with ATSFontGetUnicodeCharacterCoverage(). Disabling font fallback optimization for characters not renderable.
So perhaps this is a font problem? Does anyone know how to fix this? Any help appreciated. I rely a lot on my MacBook for my work, so the faster I can fix this without having to erase and install, the better. But I'll suck it up and reinstall if that's the only solution.
    Thanks in advance! (^_^)

    Thanks for the reply. (^_^)
I had a look at the links and found I'd attempted much of what was there already.
Step 2 (clearing the font cache) in the font article looked useful, but I've found it's not helped, unfortunately. In fact, these new error messages have popped up in Console since I cleared the font cache and restarted:

Launchbar also produces similar results as the top half of that pile of errors, as well as the previously mentioned Quicktime Voodoo component errors. Perhaps that problem is significant, too, I don't know... Right now, I'm about ready to just give up and erase and reinstall. But that doesn't prevent the problem from happening again, nor knowing what I can restore from backups without resurrecting the same problems... Any takers?

  • Help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010 (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)?

help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010
Hi, I need some peoples help on fixing my laptop. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2010 model, and it refuses to boot into either osx or windows. Every time I prevoiusly treid to boot into mac osx I got this error "panic (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)". there is an image below. and when I had treid to boot into windows (bootcamp) I got this error "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I have treid to restart the computer and gotten both these errors agian. The strange things is this deosn't always happen, sometimes I don't get any errors, and it just has the apple logo whith the spinning loading thing happening below (I left this for an hour and it still kept spinning, and never loaded). Other times it just show white whith no errors but never loads, sometime it lets me alt to select which os to boot into (nether work), but other times it just freezes and shows a mouse cursor on the white background. it's not consistent.
Most recently it has a flashing folder on a white background. I treid inserting my osx disc and went into disc utility but it doesn't detect my hardrive. It may be a faulty hardrive or sata cable but I dont know (I have links below). I was recently (well for the first time), defragmenting my windows partition, it hit temparatures of 80-85C, and stayed at that for several hours throughout the defragmentation, would this have damaged it?
I have scoured the internet and found many people whith very similar problems to me but none whith the same, and A lot of people saying that if you get the error you should just use a time machine backup, the thing is I don't have a time machine backup. The internal hardrive I am currently using on my laptop is a seagate 640gb 5400rpm (it's not an apple harddrive). every thing else it standard, standard ram and no overclocking, I was running 10.6.8 snow leopard, and windows xp profesional 32bit (split 320gb each, whith about 10gb spare on each parttion).
It would be greatly appreiciated If any one could shed some light on what I should do. I need the laptop working whithin the week (for my tafe work), but If I have to reinstall the OS's and programs it could take a long0I have a lot of programs and that could take a month. not to mention The fact that the hardrive might be completly fine and it's just a faulty sata connection. but then would I still be getting an error if thats all thats wrong?. and if it is just the error is there anyway I can fix it whitout doing a fresh install, there a error reading document blow but I cannot make heads or tails of it. I also have almost no money to afford getting it fixed.
also one last thing, I stupitidely inserted my mac osx disc 95% of the way into my macs slot loading drive when it was powered down (off). when I turned it on it sucked it in fine, but would that have caused any damage to the disc or laptop (I cannot eject the disc to check)
I have images of many of the things I described below. So any suggestions.
I have also posted this on several other websiets if that helps)

The problem may be that your macbook is'nt set to 'mirror image' if you go into settings, onto 'displays' there should be an option within, once youre connected, to 'mirror image' if you check this box, then the problem should be sorted, if not then maybe a dodgy cable or adapter.
