Macbrook pro 2010 screen shutting off

Hello,
I have been having a problem with my mac's screen shutting off randomly.
When the screen goes to black the drives keep working and the keyboard stays lit up, but the computer itself has completely frozen.
I know this problem has shown up quite a bit but i'm wondering if theres anything unique about my situation.
I've copied and pasted the data log below:

I would run the AHT but I don't have the disk anymore since I left it in the America and i'm in Japan right now.
I've heard horror stories of people bringing their computer into the apple store to get the logic board replaced and it does nothing so i'm wondering if there are any fixes out there.

I think you are having GPU problems which are relatively common with 2010 15" MBPs.  Please refer to this Apple support article:

  • My mac book pro's screen shuts off a lot

My Macbook pro's screen is shutting off whenever i open some games i downloaded off the internet or try and play any game on my browser. It didn't use to do this only recently because it is winter and my room gets rather cold causing my mac to get cold which i think may be part of the problem. I know its only the screen that is shutting off because the lights underneath the keys are still lit up, and i have to hold the power button to restart it. Thanks in advance.

  • Yoga Pro 2 screen shuts off after one minute of inactivity

I have configured the Power options so that the screen shouldn't dim on either battery or power cord and the laptop shouldn't sleep. I don't have a screen saver on. I even removed the "Energy Manager" bundled app hoping that might work. Hugely annoying. Any advice appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This may be a Windows 8 issue. I finally fixed this problem by identifying the screen saver as the issue (and I wasn't using a screen saver).  Type "lock the computer" into the search box after clicking the search charm, which brings up the screen saver dialog box. Mine was set to 1 minute, though I'd never set it myself. If you can't change it, choose a screen saver and you should be able to do so (and can then switch back to no screen saver).
BUT, here's the problem. Other things you install (or settings within things you install) can apparently change and override whatever you type in for the delay time. Try applying your new time and exiting from the dialog box, then open it back up again. I was finding that it kept going back to 1 minute. To reset things so that you can get control again, type "user accounts" into the search box and when the dialog box comes up, choose "Reset Security Policies". Then you can go back to the screen saver dialog and successfully change the delay time.

  • I have a mac book nd the screen shuts off depending on the position

my mac book screen shuts off when I open and close it but will stay on in certain position

There is a combination of a circuit, wire, and possibly other parts
that can or may eventually wear out or fail, and these would need
to be replaced. A test & diagnostic check of the computer is a way
to tell more precisely what parts could be involved in a repair.
These can be very detailed to repair and sometimes a take-apart
to fix one possible cause of the problem can cause another one
since there is a likelihood a non-professional DIY may damage it.
    {In fact, I have a similar first-edition MacBook1.1 1.83GHz
core duo, with 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, OS X 10.5.8, and
an issue with the display such as you describe; my answer
    to fix it, may be to send mine in a box to wegenermedia.}
If the computer can run an external display with an appropriate
video adapter, then you can tell if the problem is only with the
attached internal display and not some other or deeper failure.
Depending on which MacBook model identifier build year, you
may narrow down more detailed troubleshooting techniques or
look through a correct iFixit repair guide for ideas, and ask to
see what the costs would be to have an expert repair it.

    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Laptop
If you are in an area where an official Apple Store has a Genius
bar you can arrange to have an appointment there to have them
check or diagnose the issue, and estimate parts + cost. In the US
and Canada, an actual diagnostic is a free service; so is estimate.
The Mac computer need not have an AppleCare plan in effect.
Elsewhere, an authorized Apple service provider may offer similar
testing and estimate, but may charge a customary fee for the time.
Hopefully you can narrow down which one you have, from many
built during the 2006 to 2010 era the MacBook was made. They
no longer are; these are different than MB/Pro and MB/Air.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Freezing when screen shuts off

When my macbook has its screen shut off, I am unable to turn it back on. It isn't in sleep mode. When I press a button or anything, the screen stays black. Closing the cover when it's like this doesn't put it to sleep. It usually happens when I have a Firefox or Chrome window open. How can I fix this?

My issue is resolved.  Turns out I had a defective unit.  Swapped it out last night, and it's working fine now.  Got the yellow box this time.  First one had the black slip cover.
The swap was a bit of a hassle.  I had purchased from an Absolute Wireless store in Garner, NC.  That's a third party reseller.  They made me drive across town to a Sprint service center to have a technician "certify" the defect before they would replace it.  And of course, the service center couldn't do the replacement, so I had to drive back across town to point of purchase after they certified it.  Best of all, the "certification" process involved me explaining the problem to the technician for about a minute, her agreeing with me that it was a malfunction, and her writing her employee ID on the back of a business card for me to take back to the first store.  She didn't even turn the phone on herself.  She pretty much said the guy at Absolute Wireless was being a **bleep** in sending me to her in the first place b/c we could have just done this over the phone.  PITA.  But whatever, I guess that's what I get for not buying directly from Sprint.

Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if, it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

I have a very irritating problem after the up-grade to 31.0.017.
Closing the slide of my N95 causes a momentary 45 degree scew of the display and then the screen shuts off completely. The phone is still on and recieves calls etc. but the display remains off. Opening the slide (in either dirrection) switches the screen back on again after a short delay.
I have tried numerous resets (hard and soft) and reinsalations (NSU) but no joy!
The old question arises - is there a way to reinstal 30.0.015?
My advice right now is don't update yet if you have an old N95 RM-159 (0534841)!
Anyone experienced the same - any solutions???

Out of curiousity... is the phone being de-branded? De-branding the phone might caused the bugs since HW not supported by FW...

Try starting in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. Safe mode takes a while to load the OS. After that, restart the computer normally.
If that does not work, start up in Recovery by holding down the Command and R keys. In the window that opens, choose Disk Utility at the bottom and verify and repair your disk. Repair permissions while you are there.

This is what I get after force quit my laptop and turn on.
I went to apple store and they said just to open up and check what is wrong cost $300~350
and to fix this problem and replace inside (they said it might be the water spilled inside but that never happened so i don't know what he is talking about.....) is going to cost $1240
They already replaced my hardware one or two months ago and I dont get why this suddenly happens when i didnt not even spill water.
i feel like there should be cheaper way.
and the guy who was trying to find out what the problem is with my laptop

Mine just started doing this as did a coworker's (she has a 4 not 4S). We're both on Verizon. I just updated to the latest Verizon Carrier settings and then it started so I thought that was the issue, but since you're having this since March, I don't knwo any more. Prior to this though, mine was taking random screenshots when I'd hit the home button.

  • Why does the screen shut off and I have to re enter my password after a few seconds?

WHen I am using my MacBook Air, writing down some notes, the screen shuts off after a few seconds. I have to re-enter my password again. This is happening every few seconds. It is driving me crazy! Help!

    Adjust things here:
 > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Start After: > Set the time interval
     > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Battery
 > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter

  • Problem: Screen Shuts Off For No Reason

I have the new iPhone 3G.
My screen shuts off (the screen turns black, but the phone is still on...like if you shut the monitor off on a desktop PC while the tower is still on) randomly which requires me to do a hard reset (holding the sleep button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears).
This happens without warning when I do the following:
    1. During a call, when I need to use the keypad, put a call on hold, activate speakerphone, etc. the screen will stay black and will not turn on when I touch it. This means I can't even end a call unless the caller hangs up. It is clear that the phone is still on (I can hear the caller at the other end), but I cannot use the screen at all. The screen comes back on when I put the phone back up to my ear, but then when I pull it away to touch the screen it goes black again.
    2. After I complete a call, the screen will shut off before I can press the "end call" button. Even after the call is terminated from the other end, I cannot make the screen come back on.
    3. After the screen automatically goes to sleep (goes black), I cannot make it come back on.
In all 3 of these instances, I use a hard reset to make the screen come back on. In the first instance that I listed, I have to do a hard reset during the call in order to disconnect the call and get the screen to come back on.
These problems do not happen during/after every single call. For example, sometimes it will be after one call, other times it will be after five calls. It happens without warning and without reason. It is very inconvenient because I am resetting my phone several times a day. When I call customer service lines (for any company), I can't use the keypad to do things such as "Press 1 for English" without doing a hard reset in the middle of the call and calling back several times until it works.
I would really appreciate it if you could offer some advice on how to fix this problem.
    Thank you.

I had the same problem, and a very helpful person in another thread suggested I try removing the phone from the case, as it's probably blocking the little sensor next to the earpiece. When it's close to your head, the display shuts off (because, naturally, you're not using the screen). When you take it away, the screen should pop up. If that sensor is blocked, the thing thinks it's still next to your head.
I'm going to experiment without the case for a few days. if it's fixed, great. If it's not, I'm taking the stupid thing back to the Apple Store. We'll see.
Course, if you don't have a case... I'd say either attempt to erase and restore it from within iTunes or get on the horn with Apple support.
