MacCleanse
Does anyone know a way to restore files following use of the App MacCleanse. I purchased it from the App store and have lost most of the photos in my iPhoto library and a lot of music in iTunes.
Any help would be great. Thanks
To check your internal drive, yes, you need to be booted from an external drive. Quote from the manual;
"A second hard drive with adequate space is necessary to recover data and host Data Rescue's workspace. If you have a second internal hard drive in your computer or an external USB/Firewire hard drive attached to your computer, you may use it for this purpose. Make sure you have enough free space to hold the data you wish to recover, plus an additional amount of 2% the size of the volume or disk being scanned. For example, if you need to recover 25GB of data from the bad hard drive, you will need at least 25GB for the recovered files and 0.5GB of free space for the workspace. In certain situations, recovered files will require more space than they occupied on the original drive".

How to get rid of MacCleanse notice?
Awhile ago I purchased MacCleanse as part of a cheap software bundle. Having installed the software I didn't like the company's attitudes towards its customers, especially its upgrade policy. I decided to delete the software from my computer by using CleanMyMac 2.
Now, in spite of the fact that the software is no longer on my computer, every time I update/delete other software a notice complete with the MacCleanse logo, appears saying:
'You have attempted to remove the application ----- by simply removing it to trash. Would you like to launch MacCleanse to uninstall the application correctly, along with all of its related components?'
This notice is unwanted and I have no obvious way of turning it off. Has anyone any idea how to do this?Unfortunately CleanMyMac is as harmful, if not moreso, than MacCleanse. These third party cleaning apps are considered 'crapware' and can harm your system beyond repair. If you cannot uninstall them completely, as appears, it may pay to backup your data, reinstall avericks and migrate your important data back. You can try posting an etrecheck report and perhaps someone can help narrow down what you need to trash from all the areas that these programs have infected.
etresoft a long time contributer to Apple Support Communities wrote a very useful app he called etrecheck which helps in diagnosing many problems caused by third party installs etc.. Go to his website, read his information and from there download and run the program according to his instructions

Mail and Safari will not start after running MacCleanse
Yesterday, Mail crashed and a log of what happened was automatically sent to Apply. When I click on the program icon, nothing happens, same with Safari. Im in the process of restoring everything with Time Machine, but it seems to be stalled, as TM has been calculating the remaining time to restore for the last ten minutes. Any ideas?
Don't be surprise with programs like MacCleanse, MacKeeper and all those similar programs. It do more harm than good.
Come back here after you clean up those programs, search this forum about all these snake oil products. -
My apps crashes in my macbook pro
Hello,
I am having trouble with my applications, every time I start an applcation it crash before it even start and it show me this message (shown in bottem). What is the solution for this problem? You probably ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. -
Web Cam does not work for yahoo messenger
Hi,
I down loaded a s/w MacCleanse, it kinda deleted a lot of files from my mac book air after which the web cam stopped working on yahoo messenger. I checked Ichat the cam works perfectly but does'nt with messenger. Does any one have a clue on how to fix this..from my experience, attempting to use two programs that allow the use of the camera will render it unusable on the second program attempting to use it. So, if you started iChat first, then forgot to quit the program, and are now trying to use Yahoo Messenger, then you must quit iChat first and it should work.
Not unless your cam is really broken? -
How do I upgrade from a 10.6.8 to a later version?
Trying to download apps from the App Store and keep getting the message that the app can't be installed on my system because Mac OS X version 10.7 or later is required. I have a 10.6.8. Doesn't an upgrade automatically get updated from Apple when I get the message on my Mac that updates are available? Do I download from the app store? There are so many choices - don't know which one to pick. I'm not a fully matured Apple yet - I'm just a bud and a lot of it looks like Greek to me.
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty here.
http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest version of Mavericks by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the Mac App Store. -

I've run Onyx, Cocktail & MacCleanse with minimal success... fails a little less frequently for a brief period.
I'm fairly conversant with computers but I'm either missing something simple or I'm way out of my depth.
I've got no ego about this and would appreciate any advice.
ThanksI'm not real good with the log messages, but I would try a few things.
1. RAM
a. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in the slots.
b. What RAM was used, recheck the spec's?
c. Reinstall the original RAM modules.
2. USB and FireWire devices
a. Disconnect all of your USB and FireWire devices and see if it will startup normally.
b. If so, then slowly start adding the devices back on one at a time and test each device.
3. Checking and/or removing some third party software and drivers

Macbook Pro 2011 extremely slow wondering if hard drive failure
Hello, I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge computer guru, so that is why I'm coming here first. My Macbook Pro worked very well for a year, and then it has slowed down drastically. I've always been a windows user so mac is kind of foreign to me, but I'm trying to learn.
Some problems I've encountered are 1. Extremely slow running whether internet related, or just an application. I have checked the activity monitor and nothing is hogging up my memory. 2. Spinning wait cursor (rainbow circle) when I try to do ANYTHING. It takes minutes to start computer once it makes it to home screen. The circle just spins for a few minutes. Even just web surfing it's there. 3. Battery drains from 100% to less than 20% in 30 minutes, which again is annoying. 4. When battery drains the fan turns on and seems to drain battery even faster. 5. I get a lot of random errors forcing shut down of programs. I have ignored this problem for two years by not using my laptop or using it very minimally, but I am going to be needing a laptop again for school and not just my iPad and phone so I was planning on taking my macbook to genius bar, but wanted to check here first since Apple is an hour away. Plus I want to be able to use the piece of equipment that I spent a decent chunk of change on. I used time machine to back up everything today. I know its not a space issue as I have 300+ free GB on hard drive. I have tried to read through similar posts, but its overwhelming so I came here to post my own question.
I ran disc utility and there were some errors, which were able to be corrected after a couple tries. Computer still slow though when trying to do anything and running rainbow circle.
In recovery mode I reinstalled OSX
I was finally able to install updates after completing the above that were not able to be installed before.
I ran etre check, this is the report that came up:

Basically I'm wondering if anything sticks out in this report. I was thinking it could be a possible hard drive failure. I know my computer has been dropped on the floor at least a few times. Thoughts are appreciated. Thank you for your patience.Eab, I feel your pain! I am replying simply to share my similar ongoing experience with my early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, running Mavericks with seeming ample hard drive space, [applications requiring less than 100GB, about 200GB data (total drive space of 500GB)] & 4GB RAM. (Disclaimer: I am not a wise or computer-savvy mac guru - simply a fellow traveler who has had a very similar set of problems - apps taking forever to load, rapid battery depletion & super overheated MacBook. While I am a Genius Bar groupie, getting to the Apple store is, for me, akin to an antarctic polar expedition (i.e. problematic). Having spent endless hours struggling with a similar issue, I offer you a synopsis of my struggle/experience.
STEPS TO DATE:
1.Installed several memory utility programs (Daisy Disk & MacCleanse) system
maintenance program to regularly and thoroughly empty application caches (Adobe apps & internet browsers being tremendous hogs), identify and remove language elements and other redundant space hogs, etc. Result: Small, but real improvement when I forced myself to perform a "scan and delete" session every second major computer run (typically about 6-8 hours in length). However, this did nothing to help the problems regularly detected when I run the Disk Utility which almost invariably demonstrates disk permissions that need to be repaired and, with increasing frequency, has demonstrated actual disk errors that require restarting and walking through a disk repair protocol. I did bring it to the Genius Bar where they kindly reinstalled Mavericks which they could do in about an hour versus the several hours that doing this at home requires. This did identify that my RAM was, on fact, a limitation on the speed at which I could run certain apps.
2. My next move was to install an additional 4GB of RAM. I bought the new RAM on eBay for about $90 because, with 3 kids equipped with MacBooks & iPhones, I simply couldn't afford the official Apple RAM. I even installed it myself, with the help of a YouTube video. Result: Giant improvement in speed (starting up or switching apps. If I had realized how simple it turned out to be, I would have done it well over a year ago. Some minor improvement in the overheating problem, but persistent problems with disk permissions continually requiring repair and periodic disk repairs (using Disk Utility) required.
PLANNED FINAL INTERVENTION:
3. I am purchasing and installing a solid state drive (ssd) and simply chucking the original hard drive, after considerable discussion with my savvier mac friends. It has become clear to me that, sadly, every hard drive has a finite life affected by a variety of factors. I am, in fact, hard on my equipment - running multiple graphic apps simultaneously, transferring massive GBs of data between my laptop, time capsule and an array of hard drives. I will let you know how it goes, but can share that the decision to get a solid state drive followed many conversations with multiple Mac guru-types (in the hope of saving you similar painful tribulations). The cost varies according to the size of the drive, but $400-$500 would buy a reasonable starting size. I am waiting for Black Friday sales, myself. Amazon (where I will likely purchase the ssd) is already offering a number of pre-Black Friday deals. While I don't really feel like putting out that amount of cash, I reassure myself that a new drive will almost certainly solve the disk errors (with a solid state one offering more durability) & will help me prolong the life of my MacBook Pro by a couple of years hopefully. It beats buying a new Apple MacBook only three and a half years after investing close to $3k for this one!
I am certain that more experienced forum users could point you to software that could help defragment your drive or may be able to offer other solutions. I've simply had enough of struggling with burning thighs and head-banging behavior triggered by slow performance. I hope this is helpful to you in some small way. The war is not yet over, but I'm feeling good about the battle plan! -
Looking for guidance to fix my VERY SLOW imac/osx mavericks
I installed Mavericks many months ago and was disappointed in how it just crippled my system. To date I've just muddled through. I've tried cleaning out some programs, but I'm not sure what I should keep and what I should ditch. I'm not also sure how much space I have or need for the programs I run. I just started using Adobe Creative Suite and those programs are very very difficult to work with - in any kind of timely manner. (which I need to do for my work) so I'm default to working on a PC (where I also have it installed)
I ran the etracheck that's been recommended in other discussions: Below is the result. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/119182.aspx
You also need to completely unistall CleanMyMac2. Macpaw's uninstaller is garbage. Search for and Download and install an app called FindAnyFile and use this to search for a delete files with the names CleanMyMac2 and MacPaw to completely rid yourself of the piece of paid "garbageware".
FIndAnyFile
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary OR needed. They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac. Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
These types of system 'cleaning" apps are very poorly written and are really a scam to rob newbie and novice Mac users of their hard earned cash for a poorly written maintenance program that will do much more harm to a perfectly normal running OS X system than the good that the app developers purport these types of apps will do.
Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and important data is too great a risk!
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie or Final Cut user, both have its own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

Why upgrade to Yosemite?
I have the good fortune of knowing why not to upgrade. I had Mavericks already and I decided an upgrade might help fix some intermittent problems with my OS, like drag/drop being on/off.
Since upgrading to Yosemite:
Finder will not overwrite files (starts an endless loop and never finishes)
Finder will not open the preferences window
Finder will not shut down. Force quitting works occasionally, other times that too fails and I have to hold the power button until it shuts down the iMac.
HDD fan speed runs out of control after resetting SMC to try to fix some of the above
Bluetooth mouse now gets interference from Wifi, causing jerky movement while uploading or downloading
Transparency issues with the new interface, black corners instead of round corners, etc.
Possibly related, my USB drives now seem to disconnect intermittently as well (which throws a nice big wrench in my backup and flee plans).
After trying various fixes, removing software, reinstalling the OS, repairing permissions, etc. I have absolutely no solutions for the above except to backup everything, wipe the drive, and install the OS "clean".
I did so today and have already noticed the usual jumpy mouse when using Wifi.
And now file icons don't display correctly at small sizes, even after multiple cache cleans, a problem that numerous others have also experienced (along with more serious graphics issues, Finder performing like a wounded mule, Dropbox implosions, etc.)
All this and there's still an extreme poverty in actually helpful features. I'm still stuck with Maverick's butchery of the tags feature (replacing quick, simple, and visually useful labels with tiny colored dots that take twice as long to toggle was purely idiotic, in my opinion. Yosemite brings no reprieve.) There's still no "up" button for those that want Finder to just go up to the enclosing folder instead of picking from a dropdown list. I sincerely doubt that adding web searching to Spotlight is something I would ever want to use, especially since everyone privacy-minded is turning it off. And I'm incredibly uninterested in minute visual changes to add transparency, blurs and whatnot that you may appreciate once but that take up more GPU processing ever after.
So has anyone found any improvements in Yosemite? Please remind me why I shouldn't just do a clean install of Mountain Lion if I'm ever caught back up from the weeks I've wasted troubleshooting this dung heap. How much RAM installed on your Mac.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
If you have a long list of user login/startup items that launch at startup/login, you need to reduce the amount of these to around 6 or so items or less, if possible.
Do you have any unnecessary antivirus installed on your iMac?
Do you have so called hard drive/memory "cleaning" apps installed on your Mac like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac 1or 2, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, Memory Clean, etc.?
Have you updated all of your installed software and updated all connected third party device software and drivers?
Have you updated all of the various web browser plugins you that have installed within your web browser?
Do you use Google apps, like Chrome and Drive?
Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hog on the OS X system.
If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.
The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group. -
How do I download Mountain Lion on an old mac?
I have been relentlessly trying to update my mothers Mac. She has an older version of OS X, 10.5.8. I was attempting to download Mountain Lion, but I for the life of me could not get it to work. I have emailed Apple several times with no reply. How do I go about updating her mac to Yosemite?
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard system requirements
Purchased Installer disc here.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
OS X Lion system requirements
Purchased emailed download code here.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended)
7 GB of available disk space
2 GB of RAM
To install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite.you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store. -

Some applications will not open with an error message it is incomplete or broken
A few applications like iChat, iSync and iCal will not open and has an error message that they are incomplete or broken. How do I fix them and how did they come to be this way? There are no updates to load.

The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

Problem to open mac preinstall apps (not all of them)
Hi there!
I'm new on mac computers and I have a serious problem here. I can't open some preinstalled apps of my Mac! PLEASE HELP!
I use Macbook Pro with Mavericks.
Well, the list below shows the applications that I can't open for some reason. (and I used to open them often)
contacts
calendar
reminder
maps
messages
facetime
Photo Booth
iBooks
App store
Pages
Numbers
Keynote
Preview
Quicktime
Font Book
Stikies
Image Capture
Migration Assistant
Terminal
Boot Camp Assistant
Digital Color meter
Colorsync Utility
Grab
X11
As you can see there are several important apps! The ones with exclamation marks are apps that I use very often!!
This is start to happen, when I delete a big bunch of files from my HD. (appr. 60GB) . I securely empty the trash. The mac crashed and I have to restart it with the unorthodox way. (push the "open" button for few seconds) When I restart it, everything seems to be fine, BUT suddently I realise that the apps from the list above can't open.
I google the problem to find a solution... but nothing...
Then I open "console" and I get a maybe important thing.
When I was trying to open one of those apps, the console shows that : "unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting"
WHAT IS A NIB FILE??? AND WHY MY MAC IS UNABLE TO LOAD IT??
PLEASE HELP!
Is there any solution ?
Thank you in advance,
