MacDefender is a scam; Tip on how to remove it from your iMac

I, like many other victims, experienced an annoying popup from MacDefender right after I did an image search via Google.  As a result, I spent several hours in search of solutions to remove this annoying SW.  Anyway,  I am not a technical person and just bought my iMac 3 months ago and am still learning how to get used to all the operational menus.  Luckily, thanks to one Mac user who posted this solution on the internet, I followed his instructions and was able to get rid of this stupid SW.  :-)
I'd like to share this in case another victim comes along ....
Launch Finder and search for the app name (in this case - MacDefender)
Search for the whole Mac
Search for File name (by using the drop down menu on the left box)
Use the button below the search box to add search criteria.  This will allow you to have more drop down boxes
Once you have more search criteria options, select the "Other" on the left box and the " System file" on the right box.  Use the drop down menu on each box
There is a default option "aren't included"; click on this box and change it to "include"
Sort by name, kind, date, ect., to identify components of this particular app, such as folders, .plist files, cache files...ect.
Delete all the files and folders related to this app.
Do not empty the trash until you check and make sure that everything (all good apps) are working normally.  Incase you need to restore some files that you accidentally deleted.  One way to make sure is the file has the same date that this MacDefender was downloaded.
Reboot the iMac.
After I followed these steps, I was able to completely remove  the MacDefender.  I hope you will be able to do the same.
Good luck.  :-)

This is  a  simple login app that can be easily removed. If you hadn't typed  your  admin password to allow it to install, you wouldn't have this thing. Not trying to lay blame, just want to allay fears that this thing installs itself. It  does  not.

    Hi again andyBall-uk,
sorry I have taken so long to get back to you, but to be honest I am feeling a bit out of my depth with this, the more I read the safemac info the more I become anxious that if I do start to try and follow the advice given and make a wrong move I will be deeper in the mire, I can't afford to render my imac unusable, and am beginning to wonder if I should just put up with Geneio but just don't use safari by way of a compromise, I have been using Firefox  instead and it seems to be fine if I do this, but if I use safai the Geneio newsaper style home page comes up, so  I just don't go down that route any more at the moment, as I mentioned in my original post I am not very well versed in the imac at the moment I am still very much feeling my way, however I did follow your advice part of the way, by looking in Finder -Get info and it came up with this info on the last file update I have on Adobe Flash and this is it, I hope this is what you were looking for

  • I have an Ipad and several Ipods. We have deleted some songs from our devices but they still show up gray shaded. They don't play but I'd like to know how you remove them from your devices completly?

I have several Ipods and an Ipad. We have all deleted music from our devices and the problem we are having is the song itself is gone which is what we wanted but the song title is still on the devices. It's grey and it won't play but I want to know how to remove the deleted songs completely off my devices.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Thanks guys. The " Application folder and utilities " mentioned sounds familiar. Not everybody can memorize all the commands, you know. And again, tension and frustration can make one to forget what you already knew. The windows is frustrating. Anyways, thanks to both of you.

  • How do you remove mackeeper from your computer

Does anyone know how to remove Mackeeper from your Mac?

"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.
☞ Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.

My kids loaded songs on my ipad with their accounts.  Every time I log on I am prompted for their Apple IDs.  I want to remove the songs.  How??

    Hi Zimmer1956,
The process of deleting songs on your iPhone and iPad are the same by going to the songs that you do not want and swiping left over the song to bring up the delete option. Take a look at the article below for more information on how to remove music from your devices.

You need 4.93 GB of available space. I cannot download OS X Mavericks for I obtain the following answer: Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space. How do I know what items I should remove in order to make more space available? Thanks.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • How do I remove Mackeeper from my iMac - OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2

    Hi,
How do I completely remove 'Mackeeper' from my iMac (27 inch - Mid 2011) Yosemite version 10.10.2 (3.4GHz Intel Core i7) (4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3)
Mackeeper opens every time I click on anything on the internet.
Sometimes Mackeeper tells me to call a support number, the screen is frozen and only switching the power off resolves the issue.
Have deleted Mackeeper from 'Applications' but Mackeeper remains.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tony
