MacHD Other moved to Backups

Like others, I noticed the 'other' section of my HD was high.  First I backed up to my Time Capsule through Time Machine.  Then I deleted files in my downloads folder, old device backups in iTunes, trash in iPhoto, and emptied the trash bin.  After a restart I have not gain 1 kb of space on my HD.  It appears that about 121 GB was removed from 'other' and just shuffled to 'backups'.  Now I have 121 gb of 'backups'; how do I knock this down to make room on my HD?
Thanks,
Grace & Peace,
Jim

Guess this is what I needed to know,
•If you have a Laptop running Lion 10.7.x or later and using Time Machine,  Local snapshots may take up a lot of space (but won't fill your HD past 80%).  Note that they're not counted by the Finder (including Get Info on your HD), but are countedby Disk Utility and have a separate category on the Storage Display.
I'm getting ready to buy a new laptop but wanted to make sure I get one that has a large enough HD for me but this 120gb local snapshots was throwing me off.  I guess I don't need to worry or consider it though while shopping for a new laptop.

  • Moving previous backups from timemachine to timecapsule

What is the best strategy for moving previous backups done by timemachine on another external drive to timecapsule?
Obviously, some of us will want to keep these backups when we move over to timecapsule.

Cable the Mac (to which the external hard drive is connected) to one of the LAN ports on Time Capsule. Then copy the files. Over an ethernet cabled connection the transfer shouldn't take very long.

Try turning off the Camera Roll option in Settings>iCloud>Backup & Storage>Manage Storage>Your device. Then turn it back on again.

  • Cannot browse other time machine backups

I cannot browse other time machine backups on my time capsule. I hold down the option key and select "browse other time machine backups in the menu bar icon and I see no backups. Then I mount the time machine backup disk and I only see the the backup for the machine that I am using to do this. However, there are backups for two machines on that disk. One is called "outis" and the other "phaedrus". On the phaedrus machine, outis is not browseable and on the outis machine, phaedrus is not visible.
I set up a test account and the test account could only browse the backup for that machine and not the other.
How can I see all of the backups?

    kathigitis wrote:
Am I mistaken or should all of this not happen and be available as soon as the TM disk is mounted?
I just checked and it works the same way for me so I guess not. you need to mount the other sparse bundle first before you can browse it.
That is to say, both backups are visible.
Should I now revert to disk password in the AP utility?
you can try and see what happens. the above method should work then too.

  • HT201250 How do you browse other time machine backups of other drives?

It seems to me that Time Machine used to display an option to "Browse other Time Machine backups."
For example, my iMac has its Time Machine external drives attached to it.
Both my iMac and my MacBook Pro back up to it, though my MacBook Pro does so wirelessly by connecting thru the iMac.
So how can I browse thru the backup of the MacBook Pro from my iMac, since the backup is actually located on the iMac's attached drive.
In Time Machine (or somewhere) it used to say "Browse other Time machine Backups."
I cannot seem to find that option any longer?

If you have TM in the menu bar or the Dock, hold down the option key as you choose the TM menu or the TM icon in the Dock.

  • Moving TM backups to new drive

I have new larger external drive which i will use to store my video in one partition and for Time Machine backup of my internal drive on the other partition I have created.
Can I move the TM backups from an old drive to the new and then switch on TM to the new drive? In other words, can I move the place TM backs up to the new drive and not lose my history?

    Yes.
I have Intel - and the partition map scheme is Apple Partition Map - so that is wrong?
The partition is formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled).
So if i understand correctly I need to reformat the drive?
I have two partitions on this drive. I've just moved a pile of stuff onto the other partition. Am I going to have to reformat the whole drive to get the TM working properly, and can I format just the partition I need?
Probably not (but it's the whole drive that's either GUID or APM).
Also check the old TM drive; see what it is, especially the Format.
There's some disagreement over this, but TM and most things will probably work on an APM drive. What won't is, if you ever put a bootable "clone" on it, an Intel Mac won't boot from it.
So I'd say, you're probably ok with the drive "as is" unless you intend to boot from it.
And yes, if you didn't specify erase, on the target, do so.
Post back with the results, and we'll see what else you might be able to do.

  • Moving TM Backup to Larger Disk

Got a new 2 TB disk for TM. Existing disk is just 500 Gb. Followed procedures for moving the existing backups using Disk Utility Restore with the Erase option checked. Both disks formatted Extended + Journaled GUID partitions. Disk utility fails with "Catalog file on image/volume is too badly fragmented" "Could not validate source - Bad file descriptor". Yet when I run verify disk and repair disk no problems are found. Also ran Tech Tool Pro 5 and it reports no problems. How come Disk Utility reports no problems but then can't actually restore from that same disk that it says there are no problems with?

Can anyone refer me to where it is described that Snow Leopard's Finder does the right thing with these copies?
If you mean some official statement from Apple, we've never seen one. It works for me, and others (the completely rewritten Snow Leopard version only). But for some (including V.K., who's also a UNIX guru), it doesn't. (Another of Time Machine's little mysteries.)
I'd like to understand how it works and what the limitations are. Namely, I would like to drag in the TM tree of another machine and merge the two (on a NAS).
Not do-able by any method. And TM doesn't back up well, or at all, to most NAS devices: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
Some folks claim to have transferred local backups to a Time Capsule via an elaborate procedure of starting a backup to the TC, so TM makes a sparse bundle on it, then cancelling it, deleting the contents of the sparse bundle, then copying the local Backups.backupdb folder into it. Very cumbersome and time-consuming, not to mention "iffy."
But you cannot merge the backups of two different Macs into one sparse bundle and have it be usable at all. In theory, you might be able to put each into a separate sparse bundle (that's how TM backs up more than one Mac to the same network drive, such as a Time Capsule or shared drive on another Mac).
Is it a requirement that we start the copy from Backups.backupdb?
    Yes.
Or does SnowLeopard always do the right thing when copying hard links (which is hard to believe).
Copying a complete set of backups usually works.

  • Moving TM backup folder

I need to move the TM backup folder to another partition of the same external HD, but I've 2 problems:
    1) does TM recognize the folder after moving and setting in preferences, or it'll create a new one ignoring it?
    2) when I try to create the new partition on the disc (500Gb), Disc Utility ends the process, telling me that there's not enough space. The new partition il 120Gb, the free space is 148Gb, how is it possible?
    Thanks in advance

  • Moved TM backup drive from USB to Airdisk, now is not recognized

I have a USB external TM backup drive that I need to relocate. I have an Airport Extreme that I plugged the disk into and now TM does not recognize the disk as a backup of my computer. The disk is mounted and selected in TM but it wants to do a complete backup. Is there something special that needs to be done after moving the disk for TM to recognize it as a backup of this computer?
    Thanks.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
and now TM does not recognize the disk as a backup of my computer.
Because of the different way Time Machine stores it's backups when they're done over a network, you can't keep backing-up to the same set of backups. See the blue box in #E2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Moving iPhone backup folder to different computer

I would like to sync my iPhone 4 to my MacPro tower rather than sync it to my MacBook Pro. I was wondering if its as simple as just putting the users>my account> Library> Mobile Sync folder onto my MacPro Tower. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

It is not that simple and there is no need or reason to transfer the iPhone's backup from one computer to another that you now use to sync your iPhone with.
You can manually create a backup with iTunes without syncing - with your iPhone connected and without syncing, control-click on your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Back up. iTunes creates a backup for each iPhone or iOS device that is synced with iTunes which is updated automatically as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
What you need to transfer is your iTunes library from your MBP to your MacPro Tower. Copy the iTunes named folder in your Music folder on your MBP and with iTunes quit on your MacPro Tower, place the iTunes folder in your Music folder. This will replace the existing iTunes folder in your Music folder and your existing iTunes library on your MacPro Tower. Your MacPro Tower also needs to be authorized with the same iTunes account as your MBP.
If you have some content in your iTunes library on the MacPro Tower that you don't want to lose, you can selective export music, movies, tv shows from your iTunes library on your MBP for import with your iTunes library on your MacPro Tower.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only including 3rd party apps. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
If you don't transfer your entire iTunes library from your MBP - the iTunes named folder, all iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync with iTunes on your MacPro Tower.

  • I have both my iPhone and iPad backing up via iCloud, but they are not sharing the information between devices ie if I purchase an app on one it does not transfer to the other although the backup is successful via iCloud.

I have both my iPhone and iPad backing up via iCloud but the data is not being shared between the devices. When I backup it appears to be working as there are no error messages but the data is not shared between each. Any help would be great as this is very frustrating.

Backing up to icloud is not the same as syncing data between devices.  Go to
Settings>Store.  Turn on the automatic downloads that you want on that screen.
Settings>iCloud.  Turn on the features you want to sync between devices.

  • Moving TM backups to another drive?

I want to use a different drive for TM backups, but I do not want to lose the ones in the current drive. Can I just copy them to the new drive and then select it as the TM drive?

    cationic wrote:
Seems to be working now - I had to click the "Erase destination" option. I had not done that because the destination drive is new, recently formatted.
that means you didn't reformat it before. new drives are usually formatted with MBR partition scheme and FAT file system which is wrong for TM. make sure you do it with GUID partition scheme as I said and the drive format is Mac OS extended. if you didn't change the partition scheme TM might work for a while but you may run into problems later. see this link

  • Moving TM backup file

    Hi people!
    This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5096

    Interesting! How is that done...?
Reading your post again, the word Restore is there...
    - so, using Restore, it was easy. With the drag-and-drop described in the article linked in original post, I consistently got to about 24 GB's worth of transfer, then a flurry of error messages ending in aborting the transfer.
Also, the Finder window informing about that transfer showed a calculated duration of more than 6 hrs; with Disk Utillity it was done a little more than one hour, no hassle. Yay!
    - only thing is that with Restore, the target volume is wiped before the transfer. But I can work around that. Thanks!

  • Moving TM backups using Finder in Snow Leopard

It has been suggested by Apple to some users that in Snow Leopard the folder backups.backupdb containing all TM backups can be copied from one hard drive to another if one wants to migrate TM backups to a new drive. It is also suggested in this kb article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2986
that one can just move this folder around on a single drive if necessary.
I've tested this extensively and and found this advice to be mostly false. Copying the backups.backupdb folder using Finder does work technically but it completely destroys all hard link structure. this means that one should expect the total space taken by the backups to increase by a large factor. for example, if you are backing up 100GB of data and have about 10 TM backups, after you copy the backups.backupdb folder to a new location (on the same drive or on a different drive) it will occupy 1TB of space there. if you don't have enough space the copy process will fail.
Note that due to the use of hard links the original backups will occupy much less space on the drive, usually, less than 150GB in the above example.
This restriction makes the process completely unfeasible for all but the smallest backups with very few incremental backups existing.
the only situation where the hard link structure is preserved is if you trash the backups.backupdb folder and then use the "Put back" feature to get it out of trash.
Therefore I would still recommend never to move this folder (or anything in it) using Finder. Migrating TM backups to a new drive should still be done using a cloning tool like Superduper or using the restore tab in Disk Utility.
    Message was edited by: V.K.

I was surprised to note that it took nearly the same amount of time as the Restore tab of Disk Utility (which I'd expected to be faster). So the only advantage I can see, even if it worked reliably, would be the ability to get the backups off a partition that has other data on it. Guess I'll have to change the FAQ yet again.
    Mumble, grumble.
I still haven't heard back from them about the other issue where they changed the FAQ, about no full backup after a full restore, where you and I also get different results. Maybe I'll press the issue and add this one.
I'm also working one that you may have seen, where a +Verify Disk+ on the boot drive somehow interferes with TM's ability to find changes from the +Event Log,+ until you do a Restart. Two or three other folks have seen it, too. That one I reported to Apple Care last Wednesday; they said I'd hear something in 24-48 hours . . .
