Machine freeze when shutdown
Hello
First, sorry if I write something wrong cause English is not my first language.
Recently, I just did a full update using "pacman -Syu", but later on when I tried to "shutdown -h now" (even as root), the computer failed to shutdown correctly. All the usual steps like unmounting etc are [DONE] but when "POWER OFF" shows up, it freezes there. I notice that before, when shutdown worked correctly, the cursor blinked before "POWER OFF" and when it showed "POWER OFF", the cursor disappeared and PC turned off. But now, the cursor was still there, but no blink no whatsoever, it just freezes together with the PC.
There are only 2 things that I find notable :
- During the first update, some packages were failed to retrieve so I had to switch to a different mirror
- The kernel was updated too
Please advice, thanks in advance
I'm running Arch 686, if there is anything else you'd like to know, I will provide the details

Time Machine Freezes When Opened
Hi,
I have looked thru the threads in this section to see if anyone else was having the same issue before posting. If I overlooked the post please forgive me.
What happens is, I click on the time machine icon and it opens. Sometimes it works fine. I can go forward and backward in time or select cancel and I am back to my desktop. However sometimes when I click on the icon, the cascaded windows come up and the background moves, but that is all that happens. I cannot go backward in time and I cannot cancel out of it. The only way I can get out of it unless someone tells me different is to hold the power button down until the mini turns off.
It does not do this all the time. Is there some sort of update or fix that will take care of the problem?
I am using an intel Mac Mini with OS X 10.5.5
I just purchased this approx 2 weeks ago
Thanks in advance for your helpWell.. The first few backups did ok.. Now the external drive light is out and the TM says it is preparing the backup. It has been saying this for a while. When I click on open time machine preferences it will not open. Here is a copy of the current log.
Could there be a problem with this drive? As I mentioned it is a 200 gig that was taken from a PC and installed in an external case and formatted with GUID.

Time Machine freezes when loaded
Hi - I've been using time machine with my laCie 1 tb external firewire 800 drive for a while. No issues. Backups are made and I can restore. Then a few weeks ago my problem began. Now, I click on the Time Machine button in the dock and time machine loads up as normal. I am able to select a date and time machine will graphically flow back to that date but then it will freeze. No file can be selected, no other date can be selected, the restore button doesn't work nor does the "cancel" button. I can do nothing except "force quit" TM. I've done a check on the external drive and I can write to it. I've also run the disk repair utility and it reports all is fine. I have NO idea what is going on and can't get TM to work properly. Any suggestions???
GregAre you running anti-virus software? It is known to cause problems with both backups AND viewing the Time Machine "time travel" interface.
Are you using Spaces in Mac OS? Try switching to Space #1 and launching Time Machine.
Let us know if this was helpful.
Cheers! -
Time Machine Freezing when moving files it's backing up?
Hi, once in a while time machine will freeze up and I can't do anything with my external drive or any of its partitions unless I disconnect and reconnect them. I couldn't figure out what it was until I realized I had moved a new movie file at the same time Time Machine was probably backing it up.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? That will happen with most backup utilities. If they don't freeze they certainly will become very confused. You should never do something like that during backups.
Ideally the backup utility shouldn't freeze but I don't think most programmers anticipate such an action so the utility has no built-in mechanism for dealing with it gracefully. So I think you should file a bug report with Apple. You can do so at the Feedback Page. -
Machine freezes when trying to play video
When I visit certain sites with what appears to be AVI files embedded my entire machine frezes up and I can't even to a Force Quit.
I see the Quicktime logo faded with a ? on it - and the video is not playing..?!
Does anyone have any ideas as to how this can me fixed?
(I have the Flip4mac player installed and QT Pro 7.1.3 as well as VLC - but no VLC plugin in Library/Internet Plugins)
Example of a video causing the problem:
http://gossipish.com/media/wwwgossipish_com_whitneylipsync.aviNo list that I know of. It's basically "install as needed".
There are dozens of third party components and many times they conflict with one another. Out of date codecs that failed to get removed can also cause problems.
Moving the third party ones out (quit browser between tests) and dragging them back in one at a time may show the problem. -

I don't have a clue what "dxdiag.txt available for viewing and a Piriform Speccy .xml file as well and post a screenshot from Process Explorer" ..... and I'm ok with that
A bit of an explanation so you may understand why I asked for this information. When people have strange things happening to their system, it is often very difficult to give the information required for others to help them. They often do not even know all the intricacies of their own system in detail, they may have corrupted their system in the past with some software they have installed and forgotten about it, they may have a myriad of things in their system that they are not even aware of.
Instead of asking a huge amount of questions and prolonging the thread, there are some basic tools, that can give answers very quickly.
If you go to Start and type in DXDIAG.exe, then choose Run 64-bit Dxdiag and then Save all information, you generate a pretty complete diagnostics file of your system in .TXT format, which can be very helpful in finding problems, like outdated drivers, remnants of older drivers no longer used, codec corruption, and a whole bunch of other useful information to help troubleshooting.
Next go to the site Piriform Speccy and download and install Speccy wherever you want to. After installation, run the program. You will see a screen that shows the summary of your system. Now from the top menu select 'File' and 'Save as XML'. Select a file location and a file name that is both easy to find and easy to remember. That information is a complete overview of your system, plus all number of details about the components. It saves you from figuring out all the details of your system and gives us a good chance to look at possible causes of your problem.
Next, install Sysinternals Suite and run Process Explorer. This will show all the processes running in the background and can help pinpoint unnecessary memory hogs or CPU stealing processes. It shows how well a system is tuned and can be very informative to help solve strange problems.
The first two files need to be made available on a website for viewing by others, the results from step 3 can be attached as a screenshot. If people follow these steps, identifying the cause of a strange problem is a lot easier.
You don't need to do that anymore, but I figured I owed you an explanation about what I asked and why. -

Brand new T440p freezing on shutdown - happening on multiple identical laptops
I purchase Lenovo laptops for my employees at work.
Just ordered 2 brand new T440P laptops. Both machines are exhibiting the same behavior.
Turned on first machine, ran windows Update + did firmware update. Machine restarts after firmware update (automatically), but it just hangs at the ThinkPad wallpaper (no icons/desktop/mouse). Since I did a firmware update, left the machine there for 24+ hours before doing a hard shutdown. It continued to sit there over the 24 hours, had to eventually do a hard shutdown. Machine is obviously bricked because the firmware did not update correctly.
Turned on the second machine, booted into Windows for the fist time, started a clean shut down immediately, experiencing the same hang. Hard reset the machine, same thing happens every time.
Is there some issue going on with these machines? Luckily CDW is great about return policies, but this needs to be addressed. My coworker and I each bought a new T440p, and we are experiencing the exact same problem in both of our machines (freezing on shutdown with the wallpaper showing and nothing else). I did a clean factory restore on my machine, but the problem still persists. It probably happens one in every 5 times or so (i.e. very frequently). The only way to get out of it seems to be by holding down the power button. Both of our machines are i5 4200M with NVIDIA 730M. Has anyone tried calling Lenovo about this?

Ricardo RamosSince Ubuntu is not officially supported for /on Oracle VM, I'm afraid you're kinda stuck on your own...
But why not use one of the freely available Oracle Enterprise Linux-distro's or even one of the host-templates made by Oracle? These work for me, incl. the Oracle 11g-database. -

Intel Imac freezes on shutdown
Hi,
I'm a long time windows user, but I've only had this mac for about 2 weeks so everything is just about new to me. The first week's been no problem but out of the blue during this 2nd weekend my imac has started to freeze on shutdown. I hit shut down, the blue screen comes up, the spinning thing spins and then when the machine should shut down the spinning thing stops. It's completely frozen. I've let it sit like this for up to 45 minutes and it just doesn't work its way out so I have to hold the power button til the machine turns off. I've installed the latest updates and I've ran the disk utility in the utilities folder, but the problem persists.
Like I said before, this is a new computer and I haven't done too much to it. It's connected to a canon pixma mp150 printer via USB, an HP deskjet 8750 printer via a netgear wireless router, a wacom intuos 2 via USB and my ipod via USB. All that I have installed is the camino web browser, open office and x11, AIM, divx, adobe photoshop cs3 and adobe illustrator cs3. That's all the information I have.
I tried looking up this problem on google and at the apple website but I can't seem to find anything that matches.
If you have any ideas what the problem is, I'd love to hear it! I really don't want to have to return this computer and face high restocking fees!
Thanks!!!Hi ChiaCheese,
one way to solve your problem might be to create a new account into which you copy everything from your old account. This solved my problem with FileVault:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305454
If that's too heavy, have you checked: Finder/Go/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, run the permissions.
You can also run the startup from the CD and check the hard drive.
This page gives good information about what you can do with Mac OS problems:

1.5 sometimes freezes when running statements with F9
I had noticed occasional freezes when hitting F9 with 1.5.0 production (ie three or four times last week), but after upgrading to 1.5.1 today (fresh install, migrated preferences) I have had four or five freezes when hitting F9. The UI completely freezes before showing the progress bar and there is no redraw, but it isn't using any CPU (and CPU is 95%+ idle), nothing appears on the console (started using <SQL Dev Install>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.exe) and if I leave it long enough the memory usage drops from 150K+ to back between 1K to 4K (sometimes quickly, sometimes not).
I am on Win XP SP 2, using SQL Developer 1.5.1.54.40 with JDK 1.6.0_04.
Initially, I upgraded to 1.5.1 from 1.5.0 as a Check for Updates, but tried the clean install (including renaming preferences directory) after the first freeze.
Has anyone else seen this? Can someone from the SQL Dev team provide any help? Is there something else I can do to help narrow this down?
theFurryOneSame thing in very similar circumstances - query with bind variables previously executed, freezes on execute without showing bind variable window. Using no appreciable CPU in this state, but after a minute or so memory usage started to increase in 4 or 8K chunks.
I've also been seeing this intermittently in all builds of 1.5.

Time Machine Freezes during full backup
I just got a new MacBook Pro. I am trying to create an initial Time Machine full backup.
The process freezes after processing 6.39GB out of 462.76GB. Further, Time Machine
also globally freezes after the following steps:
Reboot
Try full backup
-- it freezes
Stop backup
-- backup stops
Try to start backup again
TimeMachine is now completely frozen. Further, all the top-right menus seem frozen.
Try to restart machine
Machine cannot completely shutdown -- it stays in a zombie state trying to shutdown forever
Force shutdown (pressing power button continously until the machine shuts down).
I've tried this process about 10 times.
Same behavior using 4 different types of backup disks.
(network attached via afs, direct usb, direct fire-wire).
Here's the console output is below.
The "freezing" seems to coincide with the output of:
"kernel[0]: AppleVTD: waiting space (512)"
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
Thanks!
Luis.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Why does Quicktime freeze when opening .movs?
For the past few months, I have experienced intermittent screen "blackouts"; essentially the screen goes black as if the computer has gone into sleep mode (while still working in a given program) but there is nothing I can do but a hard shutdown to exit this state. Recently, both Quicktime and VLC have stopped working properly; I've discovered that Quicktime will open .AVI files, but freezes when opening .mov files. VLC will open neither. Both programs work fine when working with audio files. I have updated my mac's graphic drivers (to the best of my knowledge) and have worked around various preferences (open GL video output in VLC for instance) to no avail. My only remaining theory is a corrupt .mov codec file, or a compounding issue stemming from the initial screen blackouts (which I've discovered could be an actual hardware problem with mac pros sold around 2010..), but I feel it's time to outsource for some new solutions. I'm still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8; 2.66 GHz Intel core i7; 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3; MacBook Pro from 2010. Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated, as I've researched for hours and have yet to find a solution or even a potential cause for these issues.
Here is the output from the Etrecheck program. It should be noted that I was only able to run this in Safe Mode. I've bolded the lines which were highlighted in red by the program.

Tiger freezing on shutdown/USB issue?
Hi,
I am running Tiger 10.4.6 on an iMac g3 4000mhz with 640mb ram. Suddenly, the iMac freezes on shutdown though the mouse pointer is on screen and can be moved. The only way to get the machine back on is to switch the unit off.
Another problem which could be linked is that my LaCie external USB drive does not mount on startup. When I run System Profile of disk utility, it takes and age to find it, and sees the drive (even though it's not mounted) and then does mount the volume.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be with this?
Thanks,
JamesHi jameseyre1 and everyone!
I do have the similar problem, and no solution yet. After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse just like you do (not when screensaver is on, though)
LaCie mounted perfectly and works just great and it might be a coincedence. Anyway, maybe these two problems are related - we will be greatful for any thoughts. Thanx.
