Machine Freezing: iCal

I have never seen iCal Helper and don't know what it is, but the last few weeks it has been launching and freezing my machine. I'm running Snow Leopard, and I did a google search for this issue. I found several suggestions for resolving it, but they are not applicable to Snow Leopard. It seems the common theme is there is a problem with iCal syncing and/or cache. I'm unsure what introduced this problem. I recently upgraded the hard drive on the machine, and also recently signed up for the free Mobile Me account to use the Find My Iphone feature.
Can anyone help? Currently, I have to do a hard reboot to unfreeze my computer when this happens.

On both an imac and macbook I have had etilqs files appearing mysteriously in the hard drive. When these files show up it, the computer will then freeze. They signify one of two things: a) Firefox problem or b) hard drive failure. We've narrowed it down to a hard drive failure.
The characteristics of this failure are as follows:
1. Ical icon will become totally clear with only the date being displayed in the dock
2. Time Machine will no longer backup and the round arrow around the clock hour hands, disappears.
3. The etilqs files will appear in the hard drive.
The only fix for this is to install new hard drives in the computers.

  • Does Time Machine backup iCal?

I had a problem with some lost todo items the other day and checked to see if I could see a backup calendar as a quick way to solve the problem. If I am on address book and enter time machine, I see backups of my old address books and if I am on mail, I get all my old mail messages on the screen (though the todo item is grayed out), but if I am on iCal, I simply get the Finder window.
Does Time Machine backup iCal or do I need to do a manual backup and then let Time Machine backup that file from finder?

Since reading some of the first messages, I have been backing up my calendar each week and putting the backup file in my documents folder. I know that file is backed up, so I assume in case of a major problem, I could pull it from Time Machine and restore the data.
Out of curiosity, though, I explored the folders in my library/calendar path and found a number of folders, each containing a file that was dated either today or within the last few days. I assume each folder is for a different calendar and that in case of total disaster, I could restore these from Time Machine.
My question at this point: When I export the calendar from iCal, if the All Calendars option is checked, am I safe in concluding each of the separate calendars would be there? If I accidentally had one calendar highlighted, would only that calendar be backed up?

  • Lion + Macbook Pro 17 + Time Machine = Freeze

I recently upgraded to OS X Lion on my mid-2009 MBP 17" and I am also getting complete system lockups - the mouse moves, but no keyboard, no clicks, no window movements, and all menu bar items stop updating, including the system clock.  Power cycle is the only solution.  This is happening often while a Time Machine update is running on my external drive (after it's been running for several minutes).  I believe it has also occured with video playback (as others have reported), but not often.  I'm not sure if it is related to waking from hibernate/sleep; e.g., last night's big 60GB Time Machine backup ran ok (took several hours), but this morning, after waking the machine and working for a while, it kicked off again and froze at the 90MB mark (of 270MB) right after I clicked on the menu bar icon to view progress.  I had an xterm window and Firefox open, plus a few utilties like Adium.  No video playing anywhere.
    Any others?
Other notes:  8GB ram; no "Automatic Graphics Switching" option on Preferences pane, probably b/c this is a 2009 MBP(?).

I see nobody is reacting to your problem.
I have (almost) the same problem, but with 10.7.5.
Not only Time Machine freezes up (over WiFi and USB-connected), but also my Music downloads (everything else works fine) to my iPhone 5 (with  iTunes 11.1) and also Spotlight (indexing for minutes and then freezes).
All these 3 actions (which usually take longer than anything else) freeze up after 3 to 15 minutes. Never the same, always different durations. Very annoying.
On the other hand: ever since I disabled Spotlight, my MacBook Pro A1286 is as fast as when I bought it in 2009.
This all happened suddenly, out of the blue. No added software, hardware. No changes in prefs.
I had my hardware checked. I have done a memtest. All the tricks in the book. To no avail.
Aopple techs tell me to wait till Maverick......some solution ;-)

  • Premiere Pro CC2014 - Graphic problem makes my machine freezes

    Hi guys,
I use Adobe Premiere Pro since the subscriptions began.
When I did the update to CC 2014, an issue starts and this freaking me out until now.
I don't have a clue for what makes it starts but in a common edit day, after editing about 1 hour... the software starts to show graphic erros (like you can see in the pictures attached). After this, about 20 minutes with the problem my machine freezes.
It only happens with Premiere Pro. I use all other softwares from Adobe without any problems.
    What do you think about?

    Hi Duca,
Sorry to hear about your issues.

We don't know much about your system. Can you fill us in? FAQ: What information should I provide when ask... | Adobe Community
Typically, this is a Mac only issue on OS X 10.9 and OS X 10.10. It can occur on any Mac containing a NVIDIA GPU, but most commonly on MacBook Pro laptops with a NVIDIA GPU installed.
Typically occurs when using Premiere Pro with other GPU intensive applications.
Other GPU intensive applications that are popular with Apple users include Google Chrome, Apple App Store, Apple iTunes, and Spotify.
Some editors use these applications concurrently with Premiere Pro. Likely, many are unaware that these applications can trigger the issue sooner or even cause your OS to crash.
Using a lot of GPU accelerated effects in Premiere Pro can also trigger this issue
If you are using only a normal amount of GPU accelerated effects and working long hours, it can trigger the issue.
If this is the computer you have, and this sounds like your issue, do the following:
    Restart the computer
    Start Premiere Pro
    Choose File > Project Settings
In the General tab under the category Video Rendering and Playback, choose Renderer > Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL). If Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is not available, switch the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration Software Only.
    Click OK
A dialog box will appear, which reads “Video Rendering and Playback Settings Changes.” Read the text, and then click the Delete Previews button. Note: any previously rendered previews will have to be rendered once more in the new renderer with a render command in the Sequence menu.
Premiere Pro should now operate without the screen problems.
Let us know if this works for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Opteron errata 131 - machine freezes regularly

    Hello,
i got a new Dual-DC-Opteron (270) machine using a Tyan Thunder K8SR (S2881) with 4 GB RAM, a scsi boot disk and 4 SATA disks running as a Raid 10 under Solaris VolumeManager.
The machine freezes sometimes when i start to copy files to it via NFS. It will run for a while then "freeze". Could that be an issue of the Opteron errata 131 ? AMD states that this should only happen very seldom - but i experienced the problem also trying to use SolarisExpress (build28) with ZFS. As soon as i started to copy files to the disk via NFS & Samba it frooze. Therefore i
Before i buy a new board with the Errata 131 fix in the bios i would like to know if that Errata is a showstopper for productive use!
Everytime the system frooze i was active in the X-Desktop - i turned it off for now and make another test on that issue. But unlike the other X-Freeze cases my system became totally unresponsive - even pings/telnets were no longer possible.

Unfortunately I come with bad news. I have the exact same problem on the exact same computer and I have been researching this for a long time. What I found is that there is a unique issue with the graphic card that came with some models of the Macbook Pro on 2006-07 that cause them to overheat, get funny lines on the screen, makes the screen go blank, get choppy sound quality and disturded sounds on video (such as on Youtube). Their solution? Replace the motherboard. Apple issued an official programs to fix MBP with these graphic cards but we only had 2 to 4 years from the time of purchase to get it fix. When I took it to Apple thy confirmed what I'm telling you now but told me I was 3 months passed the 4 years I had. Since I just recently found this out, i guess i missed out. They didn't do much to get the word our to customers about this issue, understandable, since this doesn't help their image. Apple blamed Envidia for supplying faulty graphic card, but Apple was the one that sold us the defected product under a false promise. Yes, they set up that program to fix it, but then they don't do well at getting the word out and then they set a time limit for us to bring in the product. It shouldn't matter when we bring the product in, if it's faulty due to manufacturers lack of testing.
Notice how "com.apple.kext.ATI1600Controller" is on your panic report. Research issues relating that graphics card and you'll find your answers.
Here are some of my findings: Google Search, "problems with my MacBook pro with the x1600"

  • Time Machine "freezes" and I am NOT running anti-virus software

I am incredibly frustrasted and disappointed as a first-time Apple user (brand new iMac (Intel-based) with an external LaCie 500 GB external hard disk). The problem is Time Machine. It backs up on schedule, but when I enter Time Machine, I cannot navigate at all. The background screen (outer space) moves, the cursor moves, but I cannot click on anything. I have to "force quit". So I guess I have things backed up, but can't do anything with them.
I am NOT running antivirus software. I had Intego loaded on the computer, but removed it completely after reading on Apple blogs that this could interfere with Time Machine. I have reformatted the external hard disk. Still, Time Machine freezes. Apple has put out a couple of patches, I understand, but that was months ago and all of my software is up to date.
I have called Apple support TWICE and they act as if I am from the moon -- how dare I question that the Time Machine does not work properly?
Does anyone out there know how to fix this? I am ready to return this computer to the Apple store, which cheerfully sold me on the idea of an external hard disk as a back-up.

    Hello Zurichmike (lovely country):
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
There are several things you could try. Easy ones first:
Erase and reformat your external HD.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD (on your internal HD).
Go to Macintosh HD>library>preferences. Trash the TM preference file (com.apple.timemachine.plist) and restart. The TM preferences will need to be changed as they are now default values.

  • Time Machine freezes during back up to Passport Ext drive

Time Machine freezes during first back up to My Passport Ext drive. It is a 1TB, and seems to keep stopping at 6 to 10GB stage so never actually backs up. I have excluded files to limit first backup to about 40GB.

you sure this is a Mac Pro and not a MacBook Pro first. Most every report  of issues with bus powered like Passport are best solved using a drive case with its own power instead.

  • Time machine freezes during back-up.

Time machine freezes during back-up. Have to unplug HD before I can regain controll over Time Machine In System Preferences. Tried loading folders the old fachion way—sometimes freezes during that also.
At first I thought I had a bad exteral HD, but I am on my fourth and still the same problem. My first Time Machine HD (THAT WORKED) now has the same problem.
I have been working with someone with apple support for weeks. We just replaced the interal HD, and still have the same problem. My iMac is only five months old
    Any ideas ? ? ? .

  • Time Machine Freezes and Corrupts Disk

    Hello,
I have been attempting to set up one of my external hard drives for use in Time Machine, but every time I click "Erase" when Time Machine asks me to, Time Machine freezes, and my Hard Drive gets corrupt. After force quitting Time Machine and mounting my drive again, it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I have had to go back to a PC on numerous occasions and format the disk as FAT32, and then come back and try it again. I have attempted to erase the disk through Disk Utility, but the same error occurs.
I am attempting to do this with a 100GB Store-It drive by Hitatchi. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can solve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

I had the same problem with a new 120GB WD external 2.5" HDD. It seems to perform the initial backup then gets frozen at the very end of the first actualization, CPU running at 100%. Doesn't mount any more, DU shows it but declares it as non-repairable because of different issues: index faulty, B-tree header faulty etc. The same on another Mac. Re-formatting leads to the same results.
    What to do?

  • Archck + ati-fglrx + xorg, machine freezes

    I'm using kernel26archck 2.6.15.archck7-3, ati-fglrx-archck 8.22.5-2, and xorg 11R7.0-1.
When I start X and use any window manager, the machine hangs and acts weirdly.  I try to maximize a terminal window, the machine freezes.  It seems as though if I dhcp first I can ssh into the machine remotely, but if I kill X the machine hangs.
Any clues why this would happen?  This does *not* happen with the normal arch kernel with ati fglrx installed.

Any work arounds?  I don't mind adding another kernel option or something if I need to if the change helps somebody else.
    Either way, thanks

  • Ical icon become clear prior to machine freezing

I am running 10.5.7 on a macbook 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Occasionally my ical icon in the dock looses all of its color and becomes clear - just the number remains and it is black. When this occurs, the computer freezes. I had hoped the 10.5.7 update would fix this problem, but alas, it did not. Anyone out there have thoughts on how to fix this problem?

  • Time machine freezing mac since mavericks update

Time machine is freezing up my mac since I updated to Mavericks. I was having issues with it so I just decided to reformat my time machine external drive. I can back up manually when I tell it to, but when left alone to do automatic back ups, I will come back to my mac and it is unresponsive, I see the time machine drive light flickering, and when I turn off that drive, the computer starts responding again.

Interesting. I now have my external TM HD connected directly to my iMac through USB 2. All seems to be working properly now. Had the computer set to wake up last night at 12 and it did do a back up then. Also when I logged on and woke it from sleep this this AM it went into a back up. Could it still potentially be the HD or FW 800 cable? When I connected the FW 800 directly to the mac, it didn't improve anything, but that was one of the same cables I was using before. If I use FW I do have to daisy chain the drive to my other external iPhoto drive due to having only 1 FW 800 port on my mac.

  • Time Machine Freezing in 10.6.1

    Hi:
I've installed 10.6 and upgraded to 10.6.1. I found that Time Machine would no longer backup, instead freezing after backing up a few MB of my 92.42 GB material. I went through a series of trouble shooting steps, including trying to repair the sparse bundle. Disk Utility reported that this was unrepairable, so I deleted it and started again. This time the Time Machine backup got to 2.63 GB of 92.42 GB before freezing the Finder and requiring hard reboot. I am using Time Machine Buddy, so here's the log of the latest session:
    Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Marty%[email protected]/Data
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Marty%[email protected]/Data
    Creating disk image /Volumes/Data-1/Aquinas2.sparsebundle
Disk image /Volumes/Data-1/Aquinas2.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
Ownership is disabled on the backup destination volume. Enabling.
Backup content size: 118.8 GB excluded items size: 32.7 GB for volume Aquinas2
No pre-backup thinning needed: 103.28 GB requested (including padding), 647.36 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Any ideas of what might be wrong?

  • Time machine freezing after fresh re-install because of recovered corrupt files

    Hi,
I have a Mid 2009 15" MBP running 10.8.2. Recently, my HDD crashed. And my time machine backup on an external HDD failed to mount (perhaps the backup was also corrupt?). I made an image using Disk Drill just in case and got a new HDD from Apple Support. They put in a new HDD and "recovered" my data. Now, the comp was behaving very very funny, freezing suddenly a few minutes after boot, requiring a hard shud-down and frequent kernel panics. So, I copied some of the important data in my Users folder and did a fresh install of ML on the new HDD. I also got a new external HDD and formatted it propoerly and copied back the files onto the fresh install of ML. At this point, I realised that there were certainly some files there that were corrupt(?) because, the copying back caused hanging a couple of times. Anyway, now the comp works just fine, but as soon as I begin a time machine backup, it completely freezes (just like before requiring a hard shut down), after less than a GB backing up. Please help me.

Hate to tell you this but the 2009 model MBPs were built, assembled, with a very cheaply made HDD to Logic board cable and your original drive may be fine and the cable is the thing that is failing.
I suspect this because once a drive fails it is near impossible to get any useful data off it. So if Apple was able to copy your files from the old drive to the new one that drive is probably still OK. And that you are now still having problems with the brand new drive.
No the problems you are having can not be caused by just having corrupted files store on the drive. The only files that are accessed by the operating system, while booting and running the computer, are those operating system files and whatever programs you are running. even if a program access those corrupted files it would not cause problems with the OS but may crash the program that is opening them.
As for TM not working that again is a sign that the cable is bad because TM can't copy the files to its backup over that bad cable.

  • Does time machine backup iCal using CalDAV?

    Greetings,
I'm curious if Time Machine creates backups of an iCal account that syncs with Google Calendar via CalDAV. For instance, if I delete something from my Google Calendar (or, God forbid, my entire Google Calendar) would I be able to access the old calendar via Time Machine in it's complete form?
If so, how is this possible?
    Thanks,
    B

I don't THINK it does, but you can always safeguard yourself by exporting the calendar's data every so often, so that in the event you make an error on your google cal, you can simply remove it from your ical accounts list, re-add it and them re-import the old data back in.
