Machine is freezing with ocfs 1.0.14
Hi,
I am using ocfs 1.0.14 on two of my cluster nodes.RAC is not yet installed.The Linux kernel i am using is AS3 U5 with AMD64 processor.On both the nodes i have mounted an ocfs filesystem on a common LU.The LU is shared by both the nodes of cluster.It works fine till i do some abnormal task.
While doing I/O from both the nodes on same LU,I disconnected the FC on both the nodes at the same time.Both the nodes are completely disconnected from storage.
And i find the i/o on both the node in hang state.After the sometime i/o at one machine returns error and the machine is in normal state.But on another machine the i/o freezes and any successive I/O on the same LU gets freezes the io_wait % goes to 100%,keventd and other ocfs found in "D" state with "io_sched" status in "ps-elf" output.
The device i had mounted is not the standard SD device.I had created my own wrapper device driver.And my device is just a wrapper device for SD device.It does extra processing for error handling.
The problem i suspecting is that when an I/O comes to my customized device,and if there is a path disconnection before returning it schedules some task for error processing.The scheduling i am doing using Kernel API schedule_task().
When i read ocfs design specification,i found that ocfs also schedules the task for DLM(distributed lock processing).In case of path disconnection when DLm schedules a task i.e for reading vote request and publish sectors it sends an I/O to the disk.The task is executing in Interrupt context.And in case of path error(FC disconnection)my driver schedules another task for error processing.
As per my 2.4 Linux kernel knowledge schduling a process in interrupt context is not safe.That is scheduling from a alraedy scheduled task.
But the phenonmenon occurs only on one node.And further the phenonmenon does not occur when "comm_voting" paramater is set to 0(i.e Disk DLM is used.It occurs only when "comm_voting" is et to 1 i.e when Network DLM is used.
Can anybody throw any light on the root cause of the problem.
Any help in this regard will be very much appreciated.

Laptop freezes with spinning ball
Hello,
I am using 10.8.2 on a 17-inch.
Out of no where my laptop is freezing with the spinning beach ball. The mouse moves but nothing else works. Holding the power button down is the only way to get out of it.
Below is the console from a restart. Does anyone see anything there? I can't get to the console when the computer freezes.

some users here make a point of erasing the HD to zeros & Installing the os from scratch on any new mac they buy. Admittedly a full re-install is rarely needed....but sometimes it's the quickest/most practical way to resolve a problem.
I'll hazard a guess here - & suggest that the mail issues might be related to importing the mail from panther.... there are a large number of threads relating to this. If the mbp hasn't been personalised/apps installed too much ( in 2 hrs) I'll venture that re-installing may well be your easiest option - but don't import the info from the Panther machine at this stage. ( that option is always available at any time using Migration Assistant in Applications/Utilities/ )

Having said that - personally I'd try deleting the Mail account that you imported & quitting Mail. Then deleting the file com.apple.Mail.plist which can be found in /Home/Library/Preferences/ then start Mail & set up manually as in the above link.
* Note that you will lose all messages,settings etc in Mail - but I figure since Mail isn't working, that's OK?. Also - Only do this if the original panther messages are still safely on the old iMac *

Macbook air freezes with spinning wheel
So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I get 10mins into a session, and sometimes the freezing will occur as soon as I log in. I have tried to log in in safe mode, but I also get the SWOD here as well! My details are as follows:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

MSI K9A2CF-F freezes with MSI NX8400GT and NX8500GT
Hi, all
I've a brand new mainboard K9A2CF-F with an AMD Phenom 9500 and a NX8400GR video card. Windows is running fine but when using 3D the machine freezes, sometimes it also freezes with 2D activities. Today I changed the card for a NX8500GT-TD512Eh but I've got the same problem. When I put a Ge-force 6200 in my computer the machine runs fine but this card is pretty slow.
Things I did, reinstalled windows, latest updates, latest nvidia driver, bios upgrade to v1.2, vga bios was allready the latest, changes psu with a heavier one.
Now i've got the vga card in the second pcie slot and strange enough the computer is running now for almost 30 minutes. Maybe is it something with running at 16x. But what could this be that the machine crashes at 16x?Can it be the PSU? It's now running the whole evening in the PCIe 8x slot without any crash. Is it consuming more power when running at 16x speed bus?
First tested PSU is an Mtek 350Watt.

at last i'm running dual screens but it also freezes when running a single monitor -
i have an imac g4 purchased Dec 2003 runnung OS 10.5.8. It runs fine with airport off, but when I turn airport on it freezes with the black page, "restart by holding power key . . ." I swapped the airport extreme card with the one in my ibook G4 (purchased same date and running same OS). No change in operation.
I am running wifi from verizon. Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location. Ibook running fine, desktop freezes. If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked. How do I fine the culprit?the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled....... -
Frequent screen freezes with os 10.8.3
I am experiencing frequent screen freezes with OS 10.8.3 on my 27" iMac, Late 2009. Sometimes while using Safari, sometimes while using Photoshop CS5.1, Sketchup 8, or other software. Rarely does it coincide with a processor intensive operation. I have not had this problem since my old white G5 iMac. Then it was aleading indicator that the CPU or power supply needed replacing (I went through 5 processors and 6 power supplies with that machine.) I took my current iMac in to the Apple Store and had it checked out. Hardware checked out fine, but the freezes are becoming more frequent. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Encore CS4 freezing with Windows 7
I have recently installed Production Premium CS4 on my new machine and have NO issues what so ever with any of the programmes accept for one... you guessed it Encore. I've had trouble over the year with all of my Encore versions but have always managed to get the running stable. My current version is installed and working on a Dell duel Xeon 3.2 machine running XP with no issues.
The Issue:
Fortunatly I can replicated it every time. Load Encore, open a Blu-Ray project and click on "Help" - "System Info..." bang computer locks up and a 7 sec reboot is required. System status = No other programmes running, Encore fully updated, Windows & fully update. It will also freeze if I import footage create a menu and click built project.

120Gb SSD Drive running C/ Windows and D/Apps.

I have tried running installing it on a standard 7000rpm drive too but same issue.

Could you please let me know how these actions will help?
Please note that, the issues are NOT related to the "disc burn" process.
I'm particularly afraid to install a Roxio driver without a good knowledge of what it's means, specially if the problems doesn't occur in the disc burning process or BD drive detection.
Also, related to Windows 7 "sleep mode", I don't see problems to deactivate it, but I would like to know how this is interfering with Encore.

Random hard freezes with 10.9.1
I am experiencing random "Hard" (spinning ball, inability to force quit) freezes with my new 27" iMac. I bought the new machine in December and migrated the hard disk contents from my 3 year old 27" iMac. Over the last month the freeezes have occured at least once every week, but twice yesterday. In one instance the only application in use was Apple Mail. So far today it's been behaving. Both Thunderbolt and USB hard drives were both mounted in every instance.
Any suggestions?Lex, Here are the results of my Etrecheck run today. I note that the producer says it prouces the best results if the computer has been running for some time and I've just rebooted from a hard freeze. I don't know what this means. After using Time Machine-Computer Freezes on startup and will not sleep.
I've narrowed down my iMac issues to Time Machine.
After I back up with Time Machine, my iMac freezes on start up ( I have to turn it off and turn it back on again for normal start up) every time I turn it on and it will not sleep.
I reset the SMC, startup in safe mode, and do all of the troubleshooting to get it back so it starts up without freezing (sometimes my troubleshooting works). I've even reinstalled SL a couple of times and that seems to have helped but...
...when I back up with Time Machine, the freezing issues and non-sleeping issue return.
I've just installed the 10.6.2 update and my iMac is now working perfectly, no freezing on start up and it sleeps.
I'm afraid to use Time Machine for fear of the problems returning.
Any ideas on why Time Machine would corrupt my system? Any thoughts on how I can remedy the situation?Hello m:
The preference file (plist) tells OS X what default and/or user preferences to apply to a device or a program. They rarely become corrupt, but if they do they cause all sorts of odd behavior.
After you trash the preference file and restart, OS X will rebuild the missing file with default values. If you have some personal preferences, you would need to enter those.

Encrypted time machine backup freezes OS X
Been having fairly regular problems with Time Machine backup to a LaCie 5Big 10TB Thunderbolt drive where OS X 10.8.5 will completely freeze during a backup.
I've formatted 2 of the 5 drives as 2TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) in order to perform alternate encrypted Time Machine backups. The other 3 are part of a striped 6TB logical drive. I connect the backup drives about once a week for the past few months and have encountered a freeze during backup a few times. I currently have a situation where merely attempting to mount one of the Time Machine volumes causes OS X to freeze. Initially the mouse cursor starts to stutter as it is moved around the screen and then it completely freezes. No mouse cursor, no clock, nothing. Have left for a couple of hours and still nothing so have to reboot. There are absolutely no messages in the console for the time of the hang e.g. time of most recent hang 12:55 PM which is when I attempted to mount the drive. Most recent message before the restart 12:49:16 PM.
The thing is, sometimes the backups work fine for weeks at a time, other times I get these freezes with the same symptoms as above and the only thing that seems to work is reformatting the volume and starting again, although this can take a few attempts to work. I've run a verify disk and currently everything currently seems OK (although can't run for the backup volume as it won't mount, and I've previously had to restore the boot disk due to Disk Verify failing on the boot disk).
Has anyone got suggestions as to what could be causing this? Options are faulty LaCie 5Big, Time Machine encrypted option, OS X bugs or file corruptions.Unfortunately the 5Big only has Thunderbolt connections and I only have the cable it came with as it is my only Thunderbolt device.
The secure erase single pass of the disk failed with the following error:
Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Securely erasing data to prevent recovery failed.
In the console logs there was the message: Kernel: disk5s2: data underrun
I ran another erase but without the secure option and immediately got the error:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
Unable to write to the last block of the device
and in console:
Kernel: disk5: data underrun
Going to give it another go as I'm not sure if this is as symptom or a cause as I've recently had similar errors on the boot disk (internal SSD) and "Disk0s2 I/O error" occurring in the console. I had to restore the system from backup to resolve that particular issue. -
Acrobat XI freezing with every task
Can anyone offer any insight as to why the newly downloaded Acrobat XI might be freezing with every task? I just downloaded it onto a Windows 7 machine from the Creative Cloud for teams. It freezes (spinning circle, nothing in the program operable) particularly when I use any of the Drawing Markup tools. But it has also frozen a few times just trying to scroll to the next page, or save. Any ideas? Is it maybe a graphic card issue? Any help appreciated, thanks!!
I have Acrobat Pro XI and it rarely if ever crashes (Windows Vista). I manipulate things in the Reading Order, Content and Tags Panel frequently. So I'm afraid I can't solve this one. However I would suggest Repair Acrobat Installation whenever there are problems. The interaction between the reading order panel, contents panel and tags panel is a bit wonky. Move something in one, and it will often move around in the other. Sometimes it's not possible to get them all in perfect alignment. If your Pages are set to "Use Document Structure" the AT should use the Tags Panel. So when I can't get the Contents and Tags Panels to Match I defer to the Tags panel.
When things disappear check in the Content Panel. Items at the top of the Panel are beneath those lower down--like layers. You can move things around (shading and borders in tables are what I have the most problem with when running Commonlook and with files saved as PDF from MS Word.) I don't have the opportunity to work in Indesign much. Most of our deliverables come as Word files. -
Motion causes machine to freeze
I just got my MBP back from service, and it still malfunctions in Motion under certain conditions: When I add a specific text behavior (Sci-Fi Glow) to a text layer with a specific font (Zapfino), the beach ball of death appears about 2 seconds into the preview. Changes in Resolution, bitdepth, memory usage permissions, updates (even pro apps update), external FW scratch discs, reloading Motion, reloading OSX, and creating a new admin user account have had no affect in resolving this issue. Before the service, a restart after system freeze would bring up the grey startup screen with a row of notches along the bottom (instead of the spinning bezel) and the machine would not start up. After the service, at least so far, it manages to start back up.
I had the squeel, moo, and heat issues before the service. They replaced the HD, MLB, Thermal Sensors, and Cooling Fan components. It still hisses, but less than before. It seems to be an issue that gets worse over time.
I was wondering if anyone else has this Freezing issue with Motion when using Sci-Fi Glow on Zapfino fonts. In my case, even if its the only thing in the project, even if the text is just one letter, the machine still freezes and the beach ball of death appears. Is anyone else having this problem with this or any other machine?Blixt,
I feel your pain, I lost a good deal of money because of this problem as well.
I had three 1.83 Ghz logic boards put into my MBP. I kept asking for a replacement, but the Customer Relations specialist wouldn't do it for me. So here's what I ended up doing:
After my computer was in the shop for three weeks, I called customer service and requested transfer to customer relations. The CR rep would only say that it wouldn't be much longer and I couldn't have a replacement at this time. Then, I hung up and called again, got to a different customer relations specialist and my request was refused again. I left messages if I couldn't get through. My calls were dropped twice. After three CR reps and two messages I had given up. Then, my call was returned by a CR rep willing to help me; bless his heart! A replacement was shipped the same day and my 2.0 Gz core duo MBP runs cooler, and has lasted longer than any previous repair. Motion works fine too, although I'm a little afraid to try the specific conditions which caused it to crash on me in the first place because I can't afford to be without this computer right now.
If you have a 1.83 Ghz logic board in your MBP, get a replacement because all of those boards are defective... It seems to have something to do with the video card interface based on the fact that the MB's with the 1.83 Ghz boards are fine and they have built in video. (An electrical engineer's best guess)
As a side note: Apple accidentally sent me both a replacement 2.0 Ghz and my repaired 1.83Ghz. I did a side-by-side test to determine that indeed the 2.0 do run cooler. Also, there was a glitch in the ambient light-sensor of the 1.83 ( it didn't turn on/off the keyboard back-lighting reliably when room lights were turned on/off) where the 2.0 performed perfectly. Given a choice of which one I could send back, I opted to return the 1.83.

I get the rainbow wheel when I try to open an internet page. It loads halfway, then freezes, with the rainbow wheel whirring around. Smae thing happens when I try to stream a movie on Netflix. The movie loads, then the wheel shows up and the screen freezes. Same thing when I try a DVD, it takes the disc, but won't play when I hit on PLAY.
I am repair permissions, and all that I can do, but I am a novice. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I spend big bucks and drive 40 miles to get Apple help.

If your profile info is up to date, you probably have a 2006 or 2007 MacBook with a CoreDuo or Core2Duo.
It probably came with 512MB or 1GB RAM memory and a 60, 80, or 120GB hard drive.
You're still running OS X Tiger, 10.4.
Your DVD drive may be dirty or wearing out.
For specifics about your computer, click on the Apple Logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, and More Info... to find details.)
You may be running short of hard disk space. You should have at least 10% free, or 10 to 15GB free for best performance. Less than that, and your hard disk is spending lots of time searching for places to store data.
Complex web pages and sites like Facebook and Twitter, and pages using Adobe Flash, and high-bandwidth applications like video streaming from NetFlix can all cause your computer to run slowly, and the fan to run at high speed, because the processor is working hard. Conversely, email is not terribly resource-intensive, and probably still works pretty well.
Several things can each provide a small performance increase (listed in no particular order):
Adding more RAM memory. Upgrade to 2Gb to give your programs a bit of 'breathing room', especially if you are running more than one program at a time.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the current operating system and programs from scratch. This erases all your existing programs and data. Unless you have backups and program discs, you lose everything currently stored on it.
Installing a higher capacity, faster hard disk, say 250GB or 320GB will give your programs and data more space, and perhaps faster access if you replace the factory 5400rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. If your current hard disk is nearly full (less than 10% free space), the drive has to 'thrash' to free space to store information.
Upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.5 Leopard or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Both are discontinued OS X versions, still available to order directly from Apple, but not likely found on a store shelf any longer. An upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion might not be possible for your MacBook (details here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/), and Lion would likely cause a further slowdown, because honestly, Lion is optimized for newer, faster dual-core or quad-core computers with fast video chipsets and 4GB or more of RAM.
A faster internet connection, for example: I switched internet providers to get a 3.0Mb DSL connection (up from a 512Mb connection) for an extra $10 per month, and saw downloads and internet browsing speeds increase dramatically. With the slower connection, it was not possible to watch video.
Will all of these upgrades together get you close to the performance of the latest MacBook Air or MacBook Pros? NO!
Ultimately, you have a 4- or 5-year-old computer, and spending up to several hundred dollars for upgrades might not be a worthwhile investment for you, versus applying that much money toward the cost of a new(er) Mac, and perhaps passing your MacBook on to a friend, child, or grandchild who needs mainly email capability.
If a brand new Apple is not in the budget, consider a refurbished Mac from the Apple Store online. These are reliable computers from 'last year's models' and have the same 1-year Applecare warranty as a brand new model, and often sell at a discount of 10 to 30 percent of the price when the model was introduced.
I'm using a mid-2007 MacBook, purchased as a refurb from Apple in late 2007. It came with 1GB RAM, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive, and OS X 10.4 Tiger. Over the years, I've upgraded it twice. Firs to 2GB, then to 4GB RAM, to a 320GB drive, then to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and to OS X 10.5 Leopard, and then to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Rather than one more round of upgrades to OS X 10.7 Lion, I'm saving for a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air at some time in the future. -
