Machine overheats as fan not working

Every since I upgraded to system 10.6.8 the fan has not worked. Every hour or so machine just blanks out and I have to shut down.
Any solutions?

In normal work conditions a hot machine isn't a problem as it is built in a way that processors disperse hot to the chassis which in turn diperses into the air. Is when you perform heavy tasks such as H264 encoding thath fans must rush to 6000RPM (values, at least, good for my dead macbook pro).  But as the machine goes into protection (blank screen and shutdown, surely, rkaufann87's advice is to follow. Please note: don't think as PRAM reset as an option but somehting to perform with an SMC reset.
You can also gather infos on SMC reset at Apple's HT3964.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Horrible fps problems, fans not working

    Hi,
Whenever I play League of Legends on my 15 inch retina macbook pro, the game starts out smoothly with a consistent 60 fps.  However, after a certain period of time, the fps severely drops to about 5.  It never used to do this, but now it happens consistently.  Also, the fans have not turned on in months; they used to always be on whenever I played League, but they seem to never turn on anymore.  Could the fps problem be related to the fan not working?  Please help, and thanks!

  • 2540p fan not working

Hi,I bougth netbook hp 2540p windows 7 instaled, and have a problem with cooling fan.The fan not working on the battery ,working connected to power adapter all the time.have you any suggestions how to fix it.thx
    This question was solved.

Windows 7 or Windows 8? You are likely set to passive cooling in power management while on battery which means the laptop will do almost anything rather than kick on the fan while on battery. It will slow the processor instead. If you shift to active cooling your battery will get eaten up very fast. In short, I think your system is probably fine and messing with it does not make any sense. However, here is some more information on passive vs. active cooling:

  • IMac shuts down...overheating?  Fan not working?

Our daughter reported that her iMac G4, 1.25gHz, had randomly shut down on her a week or so ago. I got it up and going again with a PMU reset, but it needed another one the next day.
Daughter's now moved onto a different machine so no worries about data loss, but I'd like to fix the iMac if possible.
It checks out okay with the AHT, and Drive Genius successfully repaired some disk errors. However while continuing to run tests, it shut down on me again. I noticed though that the case was pretty warm, so I just unplugged it and left it, and when I came back a few hours later was able to restart it. And then I noticed that it was running very quiet...because the fan does not seem to be running.
I have it going now to see if the fan kicks in, but so far nothing. Looking through the top, the fan blades are covered in dust. I can make them turn by poking a paperclip in.
Unfortunately none of the utilities that would allow me to investigate this on a more recent machine (Temperature Monitor, smcfan) work on the iMac.
I'll try blowing out the dust, and I know that the machine can be disassembled and cleaned, even the fan bearings oiled, but of course I wonder if there are any other options.
The iMac is superfluous for us at this point and we'll probably be giving it away, so I'd like it to work.
    Thanks for any help!

In the iMac G4, the fan runs constantly.
From the initial startup in a healthy machine,
the cooling fan is set to run; and as the heat
increases, eventually the fan should run faster.
Except for when the computer is asleep, off,
or if there is an issue in the hardware inside.
    So, a loose wire, a failed sensor, a circuit;
or the fan itself may have a bad motor. A
wire inside the winding could be cracked.
If you can find a computer with other defects
for a low price or free, you could try another
fan from a another similar computer. This
would be much simpler if the computer were
not an all-in-one with the display attached...
A basic box with a fan, holes and ports.
Some older iMac G3 owners made headless
Macs several years ago, when their display
went bad; the whole thing fit into a small box.
And cooling fans, accessory peripherals, &
other items were added to expand function.
    In my iMac G4 1.25 17" USB 2.0 computer,
in use right now, the sensor overview for the
Temperature Monitor shows as in the hard drive.
The version of this Monitor is 4.3.
In Temperature Monitor preferences, note the
Sensors click-on icon, if you click on that, see
what if anything appears. It should have a name
of the computer in there. Click on the disclosure
triangle to show more info. Look into the Temp
Monitor's preferences: Window and if there is a
name for a sensor there, click on it.
It is possible in more modern computers with more
sensors, to choose from those which may appear.
Also, if the General preference panel is set to get
a temperature sample to frequently, that may be
not a good idea, mine is set at 20 minutes, but
may be OK to sample more often.
In the preference item labeled Menu Bar in T.M.
you can choose to have the main Temperature
Monitor quit and also have TM Lite, launch.
Since I launch TM Lite version, and then use it
to see the main application if needed, I don't
need to look into the main one directly.
I am not sure what kinds of drive sensors each
brand of hard disk drive uses, but among my
Macs, this software works and I see the HDD
sensor primarily. These are basic, so the CPU
temperatures would be a guess, not sampled.
There is a widget iStat, which shows temp info
from the same sensor, apparently. I have the
widget's readout turned off on this point, so I
can have the menubar in Finder showing info
and not have to launch a widget to know it.
The rest of the iStat pro's applicable info shows.
The opposite of having a vacuum pull air out
of the top vents in an iMac G4, when the fan
has gone bad, would be to set the computer
on a semi-recessed base with air pushing up.
The air intake slotted holes around the base
can be slightly pressured into from below &
a furnace filter can be used to keep debris out.
Have you looked in a local craigslist for a failed
iMac G4 (near the vintage of yours) to see if
you can get one for next to nothing, for parts?
Sometimes, you can get lucky. Some get tossed
and are full of great parts...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook fan not working

    Greetings,
My macbook is suffering from a non working fan.
    - After the firmware upgrade it worked fine, but stopped working. I never really noticed until recently.
    - smcFanControl cannot get the fan working (showing always 000rpm and 55 to 80 deg C)
    - I have 2gb memory and have no overheat issues...until I run my new EyeTV hybrid which will make it shutdown.
Any suggestions to test the fan and it this is a hardware or software problem
    Thanks in advance, Marty

    mmockenn wrote:
I installed smcFanControl, it shows 000 rpm and I cannot get fan to work
If I were you, I would get an second opinion and try iStat Pro. On my MacBook it shows my fan speed as I write this at 1800 rpm (it varies a few rpm on either side of 1800.) This utility also reports several temperature reading from 35-50 degrees.
As someone else wrote here, I would think your computer would either not run or shut down very quickly without the fan. At least that's been my experience on other computers that I've owned.

  • Error 90B - Fan not working properly?

Hello, this is my first time here so please excuse me if I posted this in the wrong section.
    First, general specs:
    HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    BIOS:  InsydeH20 Version CCB.03.61.09F.21
    Processor:  AMD A6-3400M APU w/Radeon HD (4 cpus ~1.4GHz)
    6g RAM
(If anything else is needed to help me ask, and I shall post it)
Last week I received an error 90B for my laptop's cooling fan.  I was playing Guild Wars 2 and in the middle of playing my laptop shut down suddenly.  When I turned it back on it presented the error I'm asking about.  The thing is, the system wasn't overheating in the slightest and the fan was working just fine before it shut down.  I've tried many fixes proposed on HP's website and from a couple of friends:
-Compressed air blown into the vents
-System restore to a point where the fan worked
    -Hard reset
    -BIOS update
None of those proposed fixes worked.  However, I did find something that fixed it...for about ten minutes.  I fiddled with the Catalyst Control Center and set my CPU power back to its default 1400 MHz, and I shut down my system.  After I restarted it I miraculously didn't get the 90b error!  You could imagine how happy I was.  I shut it down one more time to see if the error was truly fixed, but lo and behold it showed up again.
The only change that could have caused the issue was me downloading a program called SpeedFan to monitor my system's temperature (I did NOT (I repeat, DID NOT) change any settings using the program - I purely used it to monitor the temperature.)
I cannot afford to have a repairman replace or look at my laptop as of now, we have bills to pay and food to get, and I absolutely NEED this computer to function.  I have work to do, and classes to sign up for, and we have no public computers for miles.  Please help me!

Not every fan error is a heat error. There is a sensor that detects a bearing that is wearing out or spinning that is out of round. You can sometimes limp it along for 6 months before the fan absolutely has to be replaced. When it does you will not be able to get past the error.

  • After restore from Time Machine Software Upgrade is not working.....

After I restored my complete system from Time Machine, some parts of it is not working and announcing problem to start, e.g. Software Update, My Day from Office 2008....what should I do?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
First, are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Your settings at the bottom of your post say Snow Leopard, but this is the +Leopard > Time Machine+ forum, so I'm not sure which is right.
Did you do the full system restore, starting by booting from your OSX disc? If not, what exactly did you do?
Exactly what is wrong with Software Update? What happens, or doesn't happen?

  • Time Machine backup over wifi not working after upgrade to 10.6.3

I have a firewire external hard disk connected to directly into my imac which I use for back-up. The imac is wired into an ethernet LAN. I also backup my MacBook Pro to the same hard disk. The MacBook is connected to the backup disk via a wifi link to a router. All has been working well until I upgraded Snow Leopard to 10.6.3 and now the back-up is not working for the MacBook. The same thing happened after the last point release upgrade but at the time I thought it must have been user error. Last time I had to trash the backups and start from scratch. Can anyone shed any light?

Try reselecting the drive (from the laptop) via TM Preferences > Select Disk (first select the "none" drive, then the correct one).
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" of TM on the laptop, per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • PAvilion dv6, fan not working correctly?

Was on my laptop, it shut down randomly, notification popped up saying fan was not working correctly. Is there a way to fix this? Or will it have to be sent away?

Try a can of compressed air in the reverse direction of the normal air flow. You may just have a massive amount of dust on the inside of the heatsink near the fan blades.
Here is a youtube video and about 15min in you can see the fan clearly:
