Machine shuts down when a certain USB port is used...................help!

Dell Optiplex 760 (Win Vista Business) shuts down as soon as the second from the top USB port is plugged into on the back, bottom two (2) work fine and both front do as well. What could be causing this?

Is it always the same device being connected to that USB port causing the shutdown, or is it any USB device?
Physically examine the port on the rear of PC to see if it's bent or otherwise damaged. And if it's only one device causing the crashes, examine it's USB cable or connector too.

  • Internet wireless connection shuts down when iPhone in USB port

Hi. I bought a new iPhone 3G 2 days ago. Whenever I plug it into my PC USB port to sync, my internet wireless connection shuts down (a dongle is plugged into another USB port). Have you heard of this happening before? Is it likely to be the iPhone, the new version of iTunes or the PC causing the problem? Many thanks for your assistance.

    Your welcome.
A USB memory pen does not draw any power - as does the iPhone.
Apple recommends connecting the iPhone direct to a USB 2.0 port on your computer - not to a USB hub if there is one available.
Do you know if this computer has USB 1.1 or 2.0 ports? If the former, USB 1.1 is not supported.
My PowerBook is approaching 4 years old and still going strong - running Apple's current operating system, but Snow Leopard will be comptible with Intel Macs only, so I'm reaching the end of the line OS version wise with my 4 year old Mac. I don't know many 4 year old PCs running Vista. My Mac has USB 2.0, and I regularly charge other USB devices while my iPhone is connected and while syncing - no problem.

  • Machine shuts down when importing

Anyone see itunes shut down the machine when trying to import music from a CD?

    hi Patricia!
I did have an error message when first installed Itunes 5.0, mentioning that the registry settings for the CD drive were missing, however after reinstalling it, the message did not come up again. I supposed this had therefore been sorted.
yes, i think you're clear on that front now. a repair install can also work for that message. just saw one successfully troubleshot yesterday (view all):

... okay, as of this morning, i've started to suspect (of all things) that the import crash/hang might be a

problem. here are the two posts that have abruptly inclined me in that direction:
    Marc Selzer, "Where's my AAC encoder???" #3, 10:23am Oct 5, 2005 CDT
David Morgan5, "itunes 5: crashes my system when i import cd; install prob." #13, 03:23am Oct 5, 2005 CDT
be advised that we're in experimental-treatment territory here. But it might be worth trying either of my techniques for dealing with broken quicktimes:

... any improvement with the importing after trying one or the other of those techniques?

  • Safari shuts down when trying to print, I'm using 10.6.8

Safari crashes when I try to print, using 10.6.8.

    Troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extension issue, restart your Mac and printer then try again.
If that doesn't help, reset the print system >>  Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system

Make an appointment at the genius bar are your nearest Apple store. At this point there is nothing you can do without a computer, so if you don't have one and don't know anyone who has one that you can use the Apple store is a good fallback.

There are experienced and helpful people here who run Safari under Windows. Be patient--this isn't chat and Monday mornings tend to keep people busy with work.
Allow me to offer a suggestion that might help you get noticed by the right contributors: Before 15 April 2011, there were separate forums for the Mac and Windows versions of Safari. The new forum software unfortunately lumped a lot of stuff together. So....
...were I using Safari for Windows, I would insert "Windows" in every title I posted here so those people most experienced with it can see your post at a glance, rather than having to open the hundreds of new posts every day to find the 20-40 that are about Safari for Windows.
For this thread, the title could look somthing like this:
safari (Windows) shuts down when i try to print
    or
safari for Windows shuts down when i try to print
    Hope this helps,

    Hi ohmghimire,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're seeing unexpected behavior when using USB devices, try resetting the SMC on your MacBook Pro:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the article with these steps here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If you still see this behavior after resetting the SMC, or your computer won't turn on, try the steps in this article next:
