Machine won't restart following an iTunes update

Following the download of the latest iTunes update my machine will now not restart! It freezes at the grey apple.
I've read the other enteries on the forum and tried the suggestions so far. Here's a summary of my latest progress
I've zapped the pram - no joy
I've replaced the battery - no joy
I've tried to start up in safe mode - no joy
I've used the open firmware command to open the drive and
tried to boot from the installation disc - disc activity then no joy
I have managed to start the hardware diagnostics disc which runs fine and shows no issues
I can also start the software restore disc, but that seems a bit drastic.
Help?!

Joe
Thanks for the link to your great site.
you've helped me make progress but the problem is not yet solved.
I can open the disk utility but when I try to repair the volume I get the error:
"The underlying task reported a failure on exit (-9972)"
I'm about to look round to see what this is and any further help will be much appreciated.

There may be a redirect issue if an adware software has been
installed by accident or by intent; usually if someone goes to a
web site where questionable downloads of software are free,
there may be (included, added to) the packet you get, adware
    or perhaps even malware.
So, if this is the case, the symptoms you say are part of this
experience may be related to an adware or other badware
running in the background. A 'cleanmymac' or 'mackeeper'
can also mess up a Mac computer, & they are not advised.
Several posts to the ASC discussions are about these kinds
of things and many point back to a user going to some web
site and downloading something. A click can do it.
A way to help find some evidence of certain kinds of add-ons
(outside of looking into the Browser's add-ons and see about
deleting those that relate to odd behavior, or badware) such
as adware, one could get and use this free utility & get a
report of general system info, and then post it online to see
if someone can spot some of the characteristics adware or
other malware may have included in the system.
There is another way to get a more lengthy report than etrecheck
as Linc Davis has posted, that uses more detailed effort on the
part of the user, in order to get a larger fuller report.
This is the short and easy way to look for a few clues that may
be addressed through using advice in TheSafeMac guide.

Hopefully the issue with the browser can be resolved in one
of up to three/four different ways, depending on what it is.
PS: recent updates to some OS X versions, etc do not
include update to Snow Leopard; only later systems.

  • Intel MacPro 10.5.8 can't restart it after iTunes update.

I can't get past the startup screen. The white screen with spinning wheel will not progress. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8. I accepted an update from Apple for newer version of iTunes. I needed to restart the MacPro for a reason unrelated to iTunes update. I have not been able to restart. Is there a way to restart in safe mode? Any recommendations? This is not my MacPro, I can't upgrade to new OS.

To start up in Safe Mode, hold down the Shift key at Startup. It takes about five minutes to do a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) on the Boot Volume, then comes up with a Login Screen, even if you normally auto-login.

  • IMac won't restart after latest security update

I have a late 2007 20" iMac with OS 10.10.2. While we were away last week I asked my son-ln-law to send me a photo off my iMac. He started the iMac and sent the file no problem. While he was on there he asked if he should run the security update while he checked the house so I said sure why not. He ran the update and came back in a few minutes and mac was off. He tried to restart it but it won't continue. It starts, the chime sounds, the Apple logo appears, it goes about 1/3 the way through the progress bar then sits there about 2 minutes and then shuts down. Trying to help with good intentions he found my Snow Leopard disk and inserted it thinking he might be able to use Disk Utility to eject the disk but since the disk is mounted an error message says the disk cannot be ejected. Not knowing what to do he just held the power button and it turned off.
Now that I'm back home I can't eject the SL disc and not sure what to do next. I've tried everything Kappy suggested here but nothing works. Unknown to my son-in-law I do have a Yosemite USB bootable drive but how do I run it with the SL disc in the DVD drive? I'm assuming I can restore from a time machine back up but with the SL disk in there does that cause a problem? I can see the Yosemite USB disk along with the SL disk in Disk Utility but not sure what to do if anything at this point. Suggestions?

Well I managed to get the Snow Leopard disk out and restarted the mac using OS X Recovery. I've selected the option to reinstall OS X. I'm at a screen that is asking me to 'Select the disk where you want to install OS X'. I'm presented two options one labeled 'EFI' and the other 'Recovery HD'. I chose the later but it's been sitting on a spinning beach ball for 30 minutes now so I can't select 'Install' to proceed. Any idea what has happened to my mac? A hard drive failure I assume or something else?

  • IMac Won't restart after Wi-Fi update 1.0

I installed the Feb. 24 Wi-Fi Update 1.0 and got the prompt to restart now, which I did.  Now my iMAc will not restart.  It hangs on the gray screen with the Apple logo.  Any help?
    Thanks!

Try restarting in Safe Mode , then navigate to System Preferences - Startup Disk and make sure the internal drive is highlighted. When it's highlighted then restart using the restart command in the preference and let the machine re-start normally.
If that does not help then attempt restarting, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery partition and then choose Disk Utility. While in DU Repair Disk Permissions (do it 2x to be safe) and while you are in DU it won't hurt to run Repair Disk as well. After you have completed both quit DU then restart normally to test.

  • Safari won't open since QT/iTunes update

Helloooo! Ran Software Update yesterday morning. Selected QT, iTunes and a Security Update, then went off to get ready for work. When I came back, there was a message that the Security Update did not install. Figuring I'd try again last night, I shut down.
Last night after startup, I started Software Update again but no Security Update option was available. The Installed Updates tab showed that QT 7.2 and iTunes 7.3.2 installed, but not a Security Update (so I have no idea which version was attempted that morning).
So I decide to check the Apple website for the Security Update but Safari will not load. I click the Dock icon and the little triangle under the icon blinks about 3 or 4 times then stops. It never loads any farther than that. So I open Firefox and have some trouble there, too. I got the system's Spinning Beachball about 4 times (not the little black spinning ball next to the cursor arrow) just while navigating the site. Once I got as far as the "post message: new thread" page and started typing when that **** ball started spinning again. (I had to Force Quit each time to get out of Firefox).
I started from my start up disk and ran Disk Repair utility - Nothing found AT ALL - then restarted from hard drive and ran permissions. I'm feeling pretty nervous right now, hoping I can get this post up before the ball starts spinning again. HELP!!!!

  • Won't restart after installing Mavericks update

i have a Mac Mini that's about 1.5 years old.  I ran time machine and downloaded Maverick and installed it.  It went to restart and never came back on.  Any ideas?

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac won't restart after latest Safari update.

I just downloaded the latest Safari update (5.1.2) on my iMac (27", i7, latest Snow leopard).  The download (via software update) and install went smooth but when asked to restart, it hangs up at the gray screen...after the blue screen/start up chime, but before the apple logo appears. I tried shutting down and rebooting but it keeps hanging at the same place.
Thank you in advance for any successful solutions!
    Kind regards,
    Mark

    Hi all,
    Thank you for the replies...
I did manage to solve the problem right away by following the instructions offered by Apple:  Remove all USB cables, then do a hard reboot.  Then to isolate the cable causing the problem, plug in one at a time and reboot until the problem happens again.  In my case, the issue was caused by a Flip Camera that was plugged into a USB hub.
I hope this helps those with a similar problem.
    Regards,
    Mark

  • Won't Restart after latest Security Update Download.

Yesterday I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I did what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail.  Nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

No one on the Apple site could help me so I took it into Tekserve in NYC.  I was afraid that I was going to have to replace the entire Hard Drive but they finally managed to get it working.  In the end for $60 they reinstalled the System, keeping all of my files intact.  I have a bootable external drive, but I was happier not to have to use that.  Apparently it was a multilevel problem, and not something anyone can fix themselves. If you look at the Apple discussions quite a few people had problems with that update.....
    Best of luck,
    Stephen

  • Machine won't restart

    Hi there,
I am having some issues restarting my machine:
When I try to restart I hear repeated clicking noises coming from the DVD drive and the machine wont start. After this happens I have had to keep the power button down and power up again.
This issue does not occur all the time. However, it usually happens once a day and is really annoying.
Does anyone have any ideas what this issue could be due to? and how I may resolve it?
    Thanks!

Hello all, I still can't do the sleep/recover either, I have heard that it is actually due to the nVidia graphics card that came with my machine, though I can't prove this as I have not replaced it.
For the non-startup issue where the DVD seems to just click, I get this too, and this morning I couldn't resolve the issue, holding down the power key just made the fans go crazy and then it would go back to the same cycle of clicking and doing nothing more. If I unplugged the machine and plugged it back it, it immediately started clicking and power cycling (without starting up) without me doing anything at all. And, there was nothing to explain what to do when your computer is in this state, can't open the DVD drive to load system disc, can't boot to another drive, nothing.
The result was for me to open my machine and find that my ram had a nice blanket of dust acting as an insulator I assume. Following this thread, it got me to thinking that it may indeed be overheating or not responding correctly at startup due to the heavy dust layer.
I removed and cleaned the dust, started up the machine (it worked the first attempt which made me very happy) and I was able to put in my 10.6 disc and run disk utility, I got errors in both HD check and Permissions that said it couldn't repair and to back up everything and reformat!!! I ran everything several times, and finally all errors went away and I was able to restart without any issues.
For me, it was the ram and I thank this thread for pointing me to the right direction. I was unable to find any way of starting my machine without opening it up, removing the extensive dust from the ram and putting it back. I hope my experience can offer a little help to someone that may get stuck n the same boat. I was ready to start pulling my hair out!!!

  • Computer won't restart after installing ITunes

    Hello!
I really need some help with getting my itunes to work. I go to itunes.com and download the newest version, which I believe is 10.1. I go through the entire install and everything works fine and it seems like there are no issues. Then, when i'm done using the computer, I shut it down. The next time I go to start up my computer it gets stuck on the "please wait" part of the welcome menu and just stays like that forever. So what I have to do it restart my computer and get into the Repair your computer section after pressing F8 and I do a system restore which wipes my computer clean for the entire day.. Anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried downloading itunes at least 8 times and it always does the same thing!

So not a issue with the Windows installation. That suggests a conflict between iTunes and another program or driver that is ramifying through to the startup trouble.
Do you have a version of iTunes of any sort on the PC? If so, in that version, in iTunes go "Help > Run Diagnostics. Leave all four boxes checked, and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen, click the "Copy to clipboard" button and paste the results into a reply here.

  • IMac won't restart. Agreed to updates, rebooted and now only getting a white screen w/ flashing file folder w/ a questions mark?

I Agreed to recent updates, restarted my computer and all I am seeing is a white screen w/ a small flashing file folder icon w/ a question mark on it?  I've already unplugged, turned on/off and disconnected/reconnected Apple airport?

    Hi barnstorming7,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the computer boots to a flashing question mark. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
