Machines not appearing in network neighbourhood

Hi,
It has been observed that some Win7 / Win 8 machines stopped appearing in the Network Neighbourhood.
We are running Windows 2012 Domain Enviornment...
Browser service is running on the machine.
Machine is appearing in its own NB
There is no AV Client installed on the machine.
We can browse the machine by \\MachineName, it works.
Kindly help troubleshoot the issue...

Please have a share with the following information:
1. What is your network environment, all in the same subnet? wired or wireless?
2. When are the some of the Windows 7/8 stopped appearing in the network Neighbourhood?
3. Make sure the NLA is not set to public(Network Location Awareness (NLA) and how it relates to Windows
Firewall Profiles)
4. Check if Network Discovery is enabled on the machines(Enable or disable network discovery).
5. Check if NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled;
6. Check this hotfix:
Not all computers in a domain are enumerated in Windows Explorer in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Are all of the existing machines Windows XP?
The computer is running Windows XP and the LLTD protocol is not installed. Before a computer running Windows XP can be detected and appear on the network, you need to install the LLTD protocol on that computer. For more information, please refer to Microsoft

The computer is running Windows XP and firewall settings are preventing Windows from detecting it. Check the firewall settings and make sure that file and printer sharing are enabled. If you are using Windows Firewall, see Understanding Windows Firewall
settings. If you are using another firewall, check the information that came with your firewall.

Shared Hard disk is not appearing on networked computer

I recently set up a network with my new iMac and my older iMac (both on 10.5.3). Everything was working perfectly until a couple of days ago I noticed that the primary computer's hard disk is no longer showing up when I connect the second iMac. However, my external Time Machine disk and an extra storage disk are both showing up and can be accessed from my second computer. I haven't even set up Time Machine to network and the disk is not set to be shared. I would really like to get my HD sharing again as that is where all my files are stored which I want to access on my second computer. I have deleted it and added it several times in the file sharing window on the primary computer's system preferences. It is set to read and write for my account, just as the extra disk is. I can't get it to work at all.
As an alternative I can screen share and access the files that way but I would like to get direct access back again which I was using before.
Any ideas as to what has happened? The older iMac has been having power problems - shutting down when going to sleep and taking several attempts to restart. I have no idea if this has in some way damaged the connection.

Further to what I wrote a few days ago, it seems the problem was caused by starting my computer in "Safe mode". I managed the restart my computer in the normal mode and the problem was fixed. Unfortunately I can no longer start my computer at all and will have to take it in to be fixed.

My iPad2 does not appear in Network MIDI set up .... HELP!!

I have bought an ipad 2 to control Logic Pro with AC-7 core but I cannot get Network MIDI Setup to recognise my iPad 2.
I tried downloading rtp MIDI and trying to get Windows 7 to recognise my iPad 2 but still no luck.
I have tried creating an Adhoc network direct between my iPad 2 and my iMac .... no go!
I have downloaded Tildesoft Bonjour Browser to see if my iPad appears under Bonjour services and it doesn't?
I tried restoring my iPad 2 software .... still no help.
I checked my Netgear router and that shows my ipad 2 appearing as a device with the correct IP address but that as far as I can get,
I just cannot understand why my iPad 2 remains invisible to all my computers and network permutations.
I thought Bonjour was meant to be zero configuration technology!
Any help would be much appreciated

OK found a solution.
1. I logged out of my iMac and logged back in and did the same with my Windows laptops.
2. I unplugged my Virgin cable router from the back of my Netgear wireless router as I had read that your ISP can interfere with setting up Network MIDI.
I'm not sure which one did it, if it was doing both these things but my iPad 2 now appears perfectly on my MIDI network and I can control Logic Pro 8 with AC-7 Core.
Once I had my iPad 2 working over my MIDI network I was able to plug my Virgin cable modem back into my Netgear router without it effecting my wireless MIDI network.

Archmobile: GTA02 freerunner does not appear as network interface.

I installed Archmobile on my GTA02; unfortunately it seems my microSD is one of those where the GTA02 is unable to boot from.
Consequently I had to install in the NAND. According to the ticket 121 I changed the
usb0 line to eth0 in rc.conf.
So, the installation went as follow:
- download a openmoko snapshot.
- changed the rc.conf.
- changed the fstab so that /dev/mtdblock6 is mounted as / with jffs2 filesystem. (other values: defaults 0 1)
- made a jffs2 image from the snapshot (just used jffs2 -o ../snap.jffs2 from the directory).
- flashed the openmoko rootfs with the jffs2 image
- flashed the bootloader with the provided one.
My intention was mounting /home, /var and /usr on the microsd, but to begin it is fine.
Finally I booted the device: Archlinux starts, but it fails on "Updating Module Dependencies". All other start-up messages say `Done' and even loading uevents is fast (less than one second).
The prompt arrives and waits (I also removed the `delete screen' from etc/issue)... unfortunately even if the ssh and network daemon is started when I connect the usb cable to my pc nothing is shown in dmesg, nor in lsusb. The phone seems not-there. Of course since there is no keyboard I cannot control anything.
What can try? I would really like to have arch on my phone and possibly support the archmobile community.
Maybe a module is not loaded, but what one? If so adding it to MODULES might help?
Or the Update Module Dependencies is a critical failure? How can I explore the matter?

Wish some Apple folks would chime in...
Apple is not here. Even if they might rarely monitor these boards, they will not respond. We're all users, just like you.
Suggest that you open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Click the Wireless Options button
Check one more time to see if you still have the 5 GHz Name option enabled. If not, enter a check mark and click Update to save the new settings.
If 5 GHz is enabled, temporarily disable the setting and Update. Then go back in and enable the setting again.
If you still cannot "see" the network from any device, about all that you can do at this point is reset the Time Capsule back to factory defaults and try the configuration again to see if it will "take". Lion is causing some strange issues, and this may be another.
If this is not successful, then it's time to contact Apple support or arrange a visit to an Apple store to let them take a look

Nikon D300 Raw files for 64bit windows vista machine not appearing in Photoshop CS3 raw

I purchased a new 64bit computer running Vista. I have installed Photoshop CS3 including the latest updates and the 4.6 (Camera Raw.8bi) raw update file. I included the raw file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats. I have purged cache in Bridge and I still cannot view the raw files in Bridge. I only see a gray square with a Blue NEF. I can open the files in Photoshop however. What can I do to see the files in Bridge?

A news item posted on Sunday by PhotoshopNews.com reports on comments from Thomas Knoll, one of the original authors of Adobe Photoshop, relating to the RAW file format used in Nikon's D2X and D2Hs digital SLRs.

Thomas Knoll is currently the chief engineer for Adobe Camera Raw, the company's RAW file conversion software. The PhotoshopNews item references a forum thread started by Mr. Knoll in Adobe's official user forums, where he reveals that .NEF RAW files from the latest Nikon digital SLRs encrypt data relating to the white balance setting the photo was shot with.
RAW file formats vary significantly between digital camera manufacturers (and often, between different models in a manufacturer's lineup), and the manufacturers generally won't publicly disclose the specification for the RAW file format(s) they use. Some will offer plugins or software development kits (SDKs) that enable their RAW files to be opened in third-party applications, but these generally have some limitations attached to their use.
In addition, the companies generally offer RAW file conversion software of their own, either as part of their camera bundles or as an added-cost option. Nikon offer their pro SLRs with PictureProject software that includes limited control over the RAW file conversion process, and then offer the more feature-rich Nikon Capture conversion software for an added cost. In a recent publication on the company's Nikon Pro website, it suggested that it feels Nikon Capture is better-suited to photographers, while Adobe's Photoshop is more suited to graphic artists. Still, different photographers have different workflow preferences, and for this reason third parties such as Adobe often reverse engineer the RAW file formats, allowing them to be opened in their own software - sometimes with even better image quality than the original manufacturer's software.
In a way, it is understandable that companies would want to encrypt RAW file data from their products - it allows them to pick and choose which competitors are able to open RAW files shot with their products, and allows them to generate new revenue streams from the sale of their own RAW file conversion software (or, if they choose, the sale of licenses allowing competitor programs to access their RAW file data). Nikon is not the first company we're aware of to encrypt data in RAW files; Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-F828 RAW files contain encrypted data. In that instance, however, Sony granted permission for Adobe to decrypt the data in their software. At the current time, Mr. Knoll states that while Adobe has signed a non-disclosure agreement that grants them access to use Nikon's SDK, they have not received any response to requests from Adobe that the company be allowed to decrypt the white balance data, which would allow closer integration with their software than is possible with the SDK.
The fact that Nikon has chosen to encrypt a portion of the RAW file data would not be particularly problematic for third parties to overcome, were it not for certain laws enacted around the world in recent years. One such law is the United States' "Digital Millennium Copyright Act", often referred to as the DMCA, which makes it illegal to produce technology that can circumvent measures designed to protect copyright. One could argue that Nikon's encryption of the white balance data is just such a measure - which would make it an offense for a third party without permission to make software that could decrypt the original white balance setting used by the camera when the photo was shot. One could equally argue, however, that the copyright over the RAW file belongs to the photographer who captured the image - and hence the choice over what is done with that copyrighted work is entirely up to the photographer.
Unfortunately, there's no clear-cut answer, and short of a company or programmer finding themselves in court for having cracked the encryption, there isn't likely to be such an answer any time soon. This presents a problem for third parties attempting to make their own RAW file conversion routines for the D2X and D2Hs, as if they don't want to risk opening themselves up to legal action, they aren't able to determine the original white balance setting. Hence, they must either request the white balance setting from the user as the RAW file is converted, or attempt to determine an appropriate white balance setting automatically (which would not necessarily be the same as that determined by the camera itself).
Nikon hasn't communicated their reasons for encrypting the white balance information in their latest NEF formats, but we have to say it doesn't sound like a very good idea. While Nikon Capture does indeed offer excellent capabilities for people to manipulate images saved in NEF formats, many photographers and organizations have already established workflows based on Adobe's RAW plugin for Photoshop and other image-processing tools. The biggest consequence of this move on Nikon's part seems likely to be to push more photographers onto other camera platforms. It's hard to imagine that increased sales of Nikon Capture will make up the revenue lost from camera and lens sales going forward.

Cisco ISE - Authentication Bullet Not Appearing on a Starting Windows Machine Connected to IP Phone

I have this case and I would be very thankful if someone has the answer for !
When Wired AutoConfig service is enabled on a Windows XP (or 7) station that is connected to an IP phone, the "Additional Information is needed to connect to this network" popup bullet successfully appears when the UTP cable is unplugged and then plugged back in the network card or the network adapter is disabled and re-enabled or the switchport configured with Dot1x had a shut no shut.
However, the "Additional Information is needed to connect to this network" does not appear when the Windows workstation reboots and it gets unauthenticated!
Our customer finds it a hard task to instruct his "non IT employees" to unplug the UTP cable and then plug it back or do any of the above methods in order for the authentication bullet to appear.
Does anyone know how to configure the Windows machine so that the authentication popup bullet automatically appears upon machine startup?

Please note that the authentication bullet appears on a Windows PC directly connected to the switch.
The problem is when the PC is connected to an IP phone or takes too long to boot.

Network machines not shown properly in JFileChooser

Hi i am using JFileChooser for selecting user files.
The problem is when i open Network neighbourhood (windows os) in the chooser
It is showing all the NN machines as folders ,
with same name. i cannot distinguish which folder is from which machine.
It shows all the folders as 'Microsoft Network' 'Microsoft Network'...
Any idea how to display actual systemname for NN machines.

I have a similar problem, but the solution above does not work for me: in the time, the minutes are displayed as if it was a decimal number. For example, 18:00 is displayed as 18:0, with just one 0.
This is particularly bad if the time is say 18:01 because then it is displayed as 18:1, which clearly leads to confusion, as it could be 18:10.
I have checked the time settings under international, but it makes no difference. Further, the problem is in all the views, i.e. day, week or month.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I am trying to set up Sharing amongst several computers on my home network. I have followed all the setup instructions but after completion Sharing does not appear in my iTunes window (on any of the computers I've set up). There is no explanation why.

I have been trying to set up Sharing between two computers on my network. I did this once and it worked. However, when I try to set this up now the Sharing feature does not appear on the left side of the iTunes window (on either computer). There is no explanation as to why not. Is this a configuration problem, a network problem or what? Can it be fixed? I have tried turning sharing off and back on on both computers but to no avail. What am I missing? If, while searching through your past purchases, items are unavailable to download and show a "Purchased" button, they are still on your computer. It may be best to search your iTunes library by clicking Music, then use the search bar at the top right.
If you are completely sure the items are no longer in your library, try signing out of the iTunes Store, and then back in.

Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

Time Machine appears to be doing back-ups, but they do not appear on the external hard drive. The last one I can find is June 30. I did a utility scan of the hard drive disk and it is fine.

Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar. The time of the last backup is shown in the drop down.

Look in the Utility folder which is located inside the Applications folder.
You don't want to do anything with the disk on a PC if you want it to work on the Mac. They both use different formats.

I have 2 Macs, connected to the same Wifi network. But sometimes, the shared computers does not appear on the left hand menu of the toolbar for me to access shared folders between the computers. Am I doing something wrong?

I recently bought a MacBook Air for work. Whilst at home, both my Macbooks are connected to the same Wifi network. Sometimes, the 2 Macbooks are connected and I can access the shared folders, which is great. However, every now and again, the connection seems to be lost. Is there something I need to set up so that every time both Macbooks are switched on and connected to my Wifi, it will automatically be linked?

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem. The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6. (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

Time Machine: Excluded Items Do Not Appear In Excluded Window

I have been successfully using Time Machine for some time now. I switched to Lion about 5 weeks ago and I have also recently added a second TM 1TB Backup Drive (SeaGate) to use as an off-site backup of my 1TB External Media Drive (iOmega) and my entire 160GB Internal Drive. I have also restructured the Folders on my 1TB External Media Drive which would've effected the file path of almost every file. I have been experiencing a multitude of issues since then.
1. For the first time, I have been getting error messages telling me that the backup drive is full. I am only backing up a total of 782GB on the External and 133GB on the Internal (915GB Total). So to get around this I have been using the Exclude feature. This is where the next issue occurs..
2. When I add Folders to the Exclude list, they do not appear in the Exclude window; however the "Estimated size of full backup" dialog at the bottom right adjusts to reflect the changes. I cannot delete or use the "-" to remove folders from the list, because they do not appear to be there. I seem to be able to get around this by turning the TM Off then On again, but the trouble doesn't end there.
3. Once I have excluded enough folders for the backup to be small enough and I begin the backup, TM displays the "Preparing Backup" message for quite sometime. During this time several things tend to happen:
a) the entire computer begins to run VERY SLOW, with the PinWheel of Death showing up frequently
b) about every other time, the TM Preferences window crashes and displays an error message saying it encountered a problem and had to close
4. Even if I could successfully use this method of backing up 1 large folder at a time, it becomes very confusing as to what has been backed up recently and what still needs to be backed up. It basically goes against the entire idea of having an automated backup system to have to split up the backups in that manner.
I am very frustrated, as TM has traditionally been a trouble/worry-free system for me. I have seen many posts regarding the various error messages i've received but no one else is complaining about this Exclude issue. I am most appreciative of any help you may offer.

Turn off TM, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, trash this file...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Reboot & try TM again.
