Macintosh HD appears as a folder within itself

My HD got full very quickly. I have a 750gb disk and allready sitting at 618gb. When I looked at the hard drive, I noticed that there is a folder with the same name Macintosh HD within the root when I look at my disk. It looks strange and it could be that I copied the hard disk onto itself. the folder was last modified more than a week ago.
It is possible (as a new Mac user that I did that but I don't just delete the folder because I don't know whether it is good or bad in MAC.
Please put my mind at ease...I don't just want to delete it. Would Mac allow me to delete a drive, probably not.

JGP
Do you mean when you open finder that you see Macintosh HD in the sidebar? Or are you seeing the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop? Is it showing 618GB as being used? when you open the Macintosh HD you will see folders named System, Library, Applications, Users etc ...I think if you copied the HD in that folder you would know it as it would take an extremely long time to copy 618 gigs worth of data. I wouldn't delete the Macintosh HD. look around and see if you have duplicate data, applications and the like. Hope this helps.

I'm in iPhone 5.  I transfer photos to a Windows 7 PC, using the USB cable.  Lately, the photos are appearing in Windows Explorer within monthly folders, with gibberish titles.  The folder names will be 8 random letters and numeric characters.  I tend to let photos build up, so there are about 2 years worth of these monthly folders… Between 20 and 25.  This is a huge hassle… I'm unable to tell what months are in each folder, by the folder name.…  Have to open each folder to see which month is in there.  I want to be able to look at all the photos on the iPhone in one view, as I was able to in the past.  How do I stop this foldering of photos, by months??  Thank you.  BC

I have the same issue. I searched and finally got only one answer is -- Apple suggest customer using iMAC to transfer and backup photos instead of Windows. How great the solution is it!

  • Smart Folder searches within itself

After upgrading to SL last fall the Smart Folders started to misbehave in the following manner:
The smart folder set to search "This Mac" would after restart search within itself. E.g I have created a Smart Folder finding all Word documents edited within the last week, called "Word last week". But the folder start to search within itself, e.g."Word last week" instead of in "This Mac". I have checked and, after some days, the query delivers different results if I change back to search within "My Mac".
What can I do to force Smart Folders to search the whole harddrive and quit being so self-centered (self-referencing)?

They aren't searching "within themselves" but searching wherever you told them to. If you click a saved search (AKA Smart Folder) and then select the Show Criteria option, you will see the name of the smart search next to the "This Mac"--but it is just the name, it is searching where you told it to when you created it. Evidently the programmers decided something had to occupy that spot in the search criteria, and opted to have it display the name of the Smart Folder.
That said, there is a really bad bug in saved searches that involve date as a criteria. They aren't updating properly because the wrong thing is being added to raw query of the search when you create it. Thus if you want a Smart Folder that finds MS Word docs created in the last 3 days, it won't update. If you use it next week it will continue to search for the created date of files from when you made it. I suspect this bug is what is throwing your results off.

  • Macintosh HD won't boot, but disk utility says "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." How do I repair the hard drive?

I have a MacBook that needs its internal hard drive's Macintosh HD partition repaired, as the boot screen freezes on startup.  I am running a separate, working mac OS from an external hard drive in order to run disk utility and repair the MacBook's internal OS.  The issue is, it has dismounted the internal Macintosh HD partition, and won't remount. And in addition to that, the Verify Disk option returns with, "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." I've run Verify Disk and Repair Disk a few times, all with that same result.  And the internal OS still won't boot.
I have attempted to make a disk image of the internal Macintosh HD partition and save it to my external hard drive so I can wipe the internal hard drive clean and restore the image, but I receive errors when trying to create the disk image, and when trying to erase the hard drive (I know, I should try to erase the hard drive when I haven't made an image. When I tried to erase the hard drive, the image wasn't done and I thought it was. I got an error for erase, and I got an error for making the disk image)  I have tried making a disk image multiple times and haven't been able to create one.
There is also a boot camp partition on the internal hard drive which is of no importance as to whether it stays or is erased.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Corrupted iTunes folder within iPod_Control--What to Do?

i posted this same question in another part of the website, but i think i might have better luck here
I'm the owner of and ipod mini. About 2 months ago my ipod ran into a series of problems which lead to a persistent folder appearing with an exclamation point. The people at the apple service hotline told me this represented a software error but that they could not fix it since it was no longer under the one year warranty. So after about a week of trying all sorts of things to fix it including restoring it with the menu+select function and then restoring it using iPod Updater, I gave up. and i saw it this past few days on my nightstand and decided to give it another shot. now i'll skip a little bit and get right to the point. i fixed it slightly, i got it to get past the error sign. but today i tried opening it up in iTunes and my computer (running on Windows XP) gave me an error message saying that the iTunes folder within ipod_control was corrupted/unreadable. now for my question: is it possible to fix/replace this corrupted file so my ipod can function and communicate with iTunes, or should i just give up and go back to CDs?
    Medion XL 2000 Windows XP

Try uninstalling iTunes, restart your computer, then reinstall the latest version of iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Also, try restoring the iPod software using the latest update:
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Both of these actions should theoretically replace whatever file is corrupted.

I also have this problem. I have been told to restore my ipod using the ipod updater 10-12-2005 ( i have an ipod mini) and when i tried this, it said Ipod manager internal error. I was then told to try to reboot my computer and try to restore my ipod, but I recieved this same error message. I have now found that along with the error message saying : file or directory ipod_control\itunes\temp file is corrupt and unreadable
    down at the system tray,
When i go to edit my playlists or put new music onto the ipod, when i unplug it, the new updates arent on the pod.
Christmas eve, the 1 year warranty is up. HELP!
If it's not fixable, do you think i could trade it for a replacement iPod?

  • Can Time Machine back up to specific folder within external hard disk?

I have never used Time Machine, always using the Lacie backup software to back up to a folder I've named macintosh HD on my Lacie external disk. I have other folders containing data not on my macbook. The disk is not partitioned.
I decided to try Time Machine, but it only seems to give me a choice to back up to the whole Lacie external disk. The folders within it are all greyed out. I'm worried if I did use it, it would erase over my existing folders?
Is there any way to use Time Machine to backup to a specific folder within an external hard disk with already existing files on it?
    Thanks

no, you can not designate a folder for TM backups. But TM will not erase anything already on your drive provided the drive is correctly formatted. It has to be formatted mac os extended journaled with GUID partition scheme for intel macs and APM for PPC macs.
If the drive is formatted correctly TM will simply make a folder at the top level of the drive. However, IMO it's an incredibly bad idea to keep other data on the same partition with TM. i strongly recommend you make a separate partition just for TM. There are just too many situations when you need to erase your TM drive and start backups over. having other data on that drive makes this very inconvenient.

If you are using Apple's Mail app 6.5 is the latest version irrespective of what a previous poster says. It does sound though that you are using a gmail account online via a web browser. Please confirm and fill in missing information.

  • Some emails don't appear in the folder list, I can only find them by using Search Messages

As of yesterday, new emails from one regular correspondent do not appear in the list of messages when I click on Inbox. The only way I can access them is to use "Edit/Find/Search Messages". They are still in Inbox, they haven't been moved to another folder.
    Thunderbird version is 31.6.0.

None of these apply, the messages have been received, I can find them using Search Messages but they do not appear in the folder contents.

  • While composing emails, either a new email or replying to a received email, multiple partial versions of the same email appear in trash folder.  For a lengthy email, e.g. 2 pgs.  I may have as many as 100 partial versions of that email appear in trash.

The Mac has 2 profiles.  When composing an email in mail (gmail account), multiple versions of the same email appear in trash as you are composing the email.  Does not appear to be any specific attributes which trigger this.  When email is sent.  The entire email appears in sent folder, while you still have multiple versions in trash.  This same thing occurs if you create and save a draft email.
This only occurs on one of the two profiles.  Both profiles are administrators.  But this is the secondary profile.
We have compared all settings on the Mac for both profiles, gmail online, etc.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Ick. So it can't just work sensibly? Sensible would be either autosave overwrites previously autosaved versions or all autosaved versions would be deleted when the message is finally sent. Allowing previous message versions to accumulate endlessly might be beneficial to someone, but does not seem like sensible default behavior.

  • Creating a Folder Within Form or Document Library & Display the name not in the name column.

I have created a form library that will used to create folders within that. The folder creation is done using an InfoPath Form that has been uploaded to the Form Library. When the new folder was created the name will be displayed at the Name column within
the Form Library. I want to change that to another column like documents or suchlike.
Can it be done using InfoPath 2010 VSTA C# or not? If their are other options available please could you try to inform me!
    Thank You,

    Hi,
If you want to show the name of folder in another column, a workaround is that you can create an extra column, then create a SharePoint Designer workflow to set the value of
this column with the name of folder.
Here is a link about Create Workflow using SharePoint Designer and set field value for your reference:
    http://www.codeproject.com/Tips/419037/Create-Workflow-using-SharePoint-Designer
I have seen a similar post from you in the link below:

It's recommended that you post a single question in a single thread which will make it easier to be discussed by others.

  • How to create nested folders (i.e. a folder within a folder)

I was reading the booklet which came with iWork 08 and noticed (in a screen dump showing how to import images from iPhoto to Pages) a 'twisty' against an iPhoto folder. This (to me) implied that I can have a folder within a folder. i.e. I could have a 'Holidays' folder, then within there one for 'South Africa trip' and another for 'France trip' etc...etc...
I went into iPhoto this morning, but can find no way of doing this. I tried dragging and dropping, but the folders are all at the same level - i.e. the top level.
The help system actually said I could do this - but not how to do it.
Can someone enlighten me please? I'm sure it's something simple!
    Thanks

    Alasdair
It certainly is possible to have nested folders and drag and drop is the way to do it.
IF D&D isn't working, try quit iPhoto and launch it again. Then try once more.
    Regards

  • How can I create a sub-folder within my "Documents" folder?

How can I create a sub-folder within my "Documents" folder? I have many similar documents that I want to group together. This will also un-clutter my Documents folder.

Also, you can add a New Folder button to the Finder's toolbar by opening Finder, going to the View menu in the menubar, selecting Customize Toolbar..., and dragging the New Folder icon to the toolbar in the Finder window. Then it's just one-click for new folders wherever you want them.

  • Is it possible to get the image from the i pad when mirroring via Apple TV to fill the screen instead of appearing as a screen within a screen?

When mirroring, is it possible to get the image from the ipad to fill the screen on the TV instead of appearing as a screen within a screen?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
No, the iPad has an aspect ratio of 4:3, a TV has an aspect ratio of 16:9, to fit one into the other is impossible without distorting the picture. If your TV has a zoom feature, you may be able to use this to fill the screen a little more to your liking, but this will result in cropping top and bottom.

  • The new ribbon user interface in Win 8.1 should display appropriate buttons depending on the currently displayed folder within the explorer.exe window.

To begin with, in file-explorer (.\system32\explorer.exe) normally, the new ribbon user interface in Win 8.1 does indeed display appropriate buttons depending on the currently displayed folder within the explorer.exe window.
But when one re-parents the explorer window handle to any window handle other than 0000 (desktop's window handle), then the UIRibbon fails to do so.
You might ask 'Who does that ?' and I would say no-one usually, however I use BrightExplorer which
is a great little app that  gives me a tabbed file-explorer experience.
Now, this app works fine since Windows 7, but with Windows 8 the file explorer introduced the new UIRibbon in its UI. It's that new UIRibbon that gets confused by what I think may be be caused by the re-parenting that BrightExplorer does
to pull a file explorer session into its tabbed control.
This phenomenon relates to Windows 8 + and is observed only by doing the following steps:
Download BrightExplorer from BrightNewWorlds.com by going here: BrightExplorer,
In the address bar go to This PC,
then go to any other folder and note that the UIRibbon is not keeping track of the changing folder selections.
Does anyone out there feel that they can do something about this, or have advise?
    Kind regards,
