Macintosh HD available space much greater than capacity?!?

Hi all,
Since earlier today, my MBPs hard drive is showing incorrect "available" space (see screenshot). Any suggestions on how I can sort this?
Thanks!

First reboot and see if it clears it up. If not I would boot into the Lion Recovery disk (command-r) and do a Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

  • Available disk space greater than capacity?

I'm new to this whole mac thing, and maybe I'm overlooking something....but this just doesn't seem right.  If I click on the hard disk of my new 13" MBA 256G, and choose get info, I get the following:
    Capacity: 250.14GB
    Available: 296.42GB
How the heck does Lion think that I have more free space than the drive can even hold?

I would suggest booting from the Recovery Partition and repairing the disk with Disk Utility from there.
I have seen disks that report no errors when verified only to have errors corrected when repaired. In fact I hardly ever use verify for just that reason. I prefer to just be done with it and do a repiar in the first place.

  • Disk Utility shows Used greater than Capacity?

I have a Smartdisk 80GB Firelite that is partitioned and erased, yet in disk utility it shows 74.4GB Capacity, 74.4GB Available, and 34.6GB Used. That doesn't make any sense at all. How can I get the used space back to Zero?

Yes, I've used Disk Utility to partition. I've done 1 partition, 2 partitions, 16 partitions, I've partitioned as Unix then back to Mac OS. When I had 16 partitions there were about 4.5 GBs per partition and it would say 20.4 GBs used on a 4.5 GB partition, this is the readout at the bottom of Disk Utility when you click on the drive. I've ran repair disk and everything is okay. I've ran Disk Warrior and everything is okay. It's very strange, my 80gb Firelite drive is completely empty, no data, it's been erased and partitioned a number of times and Disk Utility still says it has Used GBs, when it should be close to zero.

  • "Macintosh HD" available space issue

So I recently purchased this Mac (Retina MacBook 15", Late 2013) and everything was hunky-dory. However, recently, after playing some video games, I noticed that I was no longer able to save the game. The game in question (The Witcher) prompted me with a dialog box that says that there is no more space to save the game. I knew that I had over 300 GB free on my main partition, since I don't use a lot of it. But when I checked Disk Utility, this happened.
Here, it shows that there are only 18.9 MB left in free space. When I click on the actual partition, this is what I get:
Obviously, there is some disconnect between the actual partition and the hard drive itself. When I press "About This Mac," it also shows the correct amount of space:
Any help would be appreciated. I turned Time Machine on and off, rebooted, repaired Disk Permissions and the Disk, but nothing changed. Thanks!

Start up in Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then restart as usual.
If you don't already have a current backup, you must back up your data before you take the above step. You may be able to back up, even if the system isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Directory corruption in a MacOS journaled volume is always the result of a drive malfunction. It's not caused by power failures, system crashes, or anything else. You might choose to tolerate such a malfunction once in the life of a drive. If it's repeated, the drive must be replaced, or there is some other hardware fault that needs to be corrected. Ignoring repeated directory errors will result in data loss.

  • What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod?

What happens when an iPod is synchronized with an iTunes library that is bigger than the available space on the iPod? I did this some time ago. On screen was shown available space somewhat less than 120 GB, but maybe somewhere between 10 and 20 GB more in the library. I had to get the iPod updated anyway, so I did proceed. However, afterwards the total content of the library was only about 110 GB. Now I wonder what did actually happen. Was the first sign only corrected for double copies of the same files or lost files or where files deleted from iTunes? And if files where deleted from iTunes, were they also deleted from my computer?

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

    Attempted solutions:
-I created a new User Account and I can download large files with no issues.
-I ran "Repair Disk Permissions" but still get warnings.
    Google Drive Warning:
    Spotify Warning:
But on my other user account I can use spotify and download large files, etc.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Hard Drive Capacity Issue -- 51 GBs missing btwn utilized and avail space

    I have a 200MB internal hard drive.
    My SYSTEM PROFILER states:
Capacity=185.99GB (which I understand due to system use, etc)
    Available= 26.25 GB (odd)
This available space reading seemed odd as I don't have much data on the HD (transferred files using Migration Assistant from a 80gb, 1.67ghz older G4 laptop).
So I went to the ACTIVITY MONITOR and looked at DISK USAGE at it states:
    Space Utilized= 99.14 GB
    Space Free= 25.85 GB
With a total of 124.99 GB between the two (the adjacent pie chart total)
MY QUESTION: If I have a HD with a capacity of 185.99 GB, with only 99.14 GB utilized, why is the space free missing 51 GBs? Where did this memory space go?
Note: I have never partitioned the Hard Drive or created any sort of RAM Disk.
    Anyone? Please help.

    UPDATE BUT STILL NO ANSWER:
Ran DISK UTILITY which fixed some minor errors and how states "Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
But the issue remains - I have a 200GB hard drive but the data at the bottom of this utility reads:
    Capacity : 186.0 GB (199,705,673,728 Bytes)
    Available : 26.3 GB (28,291,375,104 Bytes)
    Used : 98.6 GB (105,916,047,360 Bytes)
    Number of Folders: 173,085
    Number of Files: 886,070
HOW CAN I ONLY HAVE 26.3GB available when I have only used 98.6GB of 186GB = Should be a 87.4 GB balance available, not 26.3 GB, right????????
What is the deal here? Is this related to MobileMe or iPhone issue maybe?
The hardware start-up test and disk utility test are all clean. Someone? Anyone?
    Thanks!

  • Component Qty in PO for Subcontracting is greater than available in stock

    Dear Gurus,
i have an issue regarding Subcontracting. When i create a Purchase Order, i use Item Category L. In the Compoenent i specify the material and the Requirement Quantity. Req Qty which i specify in PO is greater than the Qty available in Stock.
How do i restrict the user to enter only the Quantity that is available in Stock for the Component provided to the Vendor.
    Thanks,
    Johi.

the next MRP run will create a requisition or planned order  to get more quantity for the component., if you are short of material.
do you just plan to produce as much as you have components for, or do you plan to satisfy a customers need?

  • Storage bin Capacity utilization is greater than 100%

    Hi,
Via LS03N, I can found that some capacity utilization is greater than 100%, this must be incorrect, what's the reason? is there any report to update the capacity utilization for storage bin?
    Kindly please advise.
    Thanks

For the capacity checks, the remaining capacities or the used weight in the storage bin master data are updated with every putaway or picking. If you change the inspection method in the current operations or you change capacity or weight data of materials or storage unit types, you then need to make a comparison of the data. You can make this comparison with report RLS10200. First read the documentation before you start the report.

  • Why is there so much available space on my hard drive after installing Lion?

I just made the decision to  go ahead and install the new operating system "Lion"
I backed everything up to my Time Capsule and I have an older back up of everything on an external hard drive.
Now I have two questions and one task.
Why is there so much available space on my hard drive and where did my iPhoto library go after installing the new operating system?
My task is to restore my most up to date iPhoto library which I assume is on my time capsule.
How should I approach this task?

    Hi entresoft,
I am not sure how to do this. I am not a very literate computer person but have a vague idea of what you are suggesting.
If I do manage to figure out how to do what you have suggested will this restore my iPhoto Library and I assume maybe other files?
    Thanks!

  • My avchd video I imported looks great on the monitor, but once I run it through iDVD the quality of video on my HD tv is much less than I had on the monitor

Hope you can help. I imported AVCHD video into final cut express 4, Ive used the broadcast safe filter, and others in the final cut color correction suite. but to no avail. When I export using quick time, and burn the DVD in best performance, the quality of the video is much less on my HD TV  than on my monitor during construction.
Im looking for some insight here.
My DVD player is pretty cheap, but movies I buy are crisp and clean, my video looks blotchy and cheap.
I tried using iMovie and got the same results
    Jeff

Hi Jeffrey. You're probably going to get a lot of comments as to the fact that DVD is not HD quality. It's resolution quality is much lower than actual HD and there's a lot of compression going from HD footage to standard definition of DVD. You might experiment with BluRay if you can get a BluRay burner to work with your mac or burn a BluRay project using Toast on your mac. You can search the forums for more informaiton.
I've been experiencing some of what you're describing for years. I also agree that the overall video quality going from HD to iDVD is just not as good as it's expected to be. The commercial DVDs use complex compression techniques and of course are shot with perfect lighting and equipments,
Make sure you're exporting your FCE project (not self-contained). In iDVD use professional quality unless it's a really long video. Check the iDVD forums for more informaiton about that. Good luck and I wouldn't expect any improvement from iMovie. iMovie is more targetted towards online viewing rather than DVD...

  • "Capacity must be greater than 0" error message

    Hi experts,
I'm having some issues when trying to full optimize my application (on BPC 5.1). I get the following error:
Capacity must be greater than zero. Parameter name: Capacity
Save application and process from Analysis Services work without a complain but I'm not able to make it work from the application front-end.
The application is partitioned on a monthly basis, with 11 dims. I created a K2ServerDebug.log file on websrvr/bin for debug purposes but it seems that it's not creating the 4 other files
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Ibai

    Hi Sorin,
Partitions follow Fact<CubeName>_<TimeSlice> convention. I'm able to run the full optimize when there are few records (~100 records) on the fact tables to process but it keeps failing if I do the same test with ~ 1,000,000 records.
Surprisingly if I run the optimization with compression it will complete without errors but I believe this way all partitions are processed regardless the data is new or not. I'm interested in measuring performance so I would like to complete this test withou the compression option checked.
I've run some queries on data to make sure that all the members exist and are not calculated and checked the source was equal to 0 .
I'm running this test on a (dev) monoserver environment (sql server 2005 + SSAS + BPC 5.1)
    Regards,
    Ibai

  • Why does my Macintosh HD and Utility Disk give different available space values?

My MacBook Pro (about a year and a half old) has started running extremely slowly out of the blue, to the point it is barely functional. I've tried basically everything, restarting, cleaning up the desktop, clearing out my downloads file, starting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, updating the operating system. Now my Mac HD says it has about 400GB free space out of 700GB, however today I was running utility disk to see if that would detect a problem and when selecting the first Macintosh HD option it says I only have around 18MB free, is this my problem? and if so how do I fix it? and why would I have two different values for available space? The second Macintosh HD entry does have the same available space in the get info page as is listed in the Disk Utility.

That refers to free disk space, not RAM. If your computer has 4GB of RAM, that's enough. If it only has 4GB of free disk space, you need to delete content from the internal drive; for best results, free up at least 20GB.
