Macintosh HD Cannot Be Repaired

Hi Guys, got a major problem here. Did a verify of my start up volume and it came back saying it needed to be repaired. So I inserted my Tiger install disc and from the utilities menu there tried to repair the volume. It came back saying:
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
The report above this was as follows:
"fsck_hfs(100)malloc:* Deallocation of a pointer not malloced:0xbc000; This could be a double free () or free () called with middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug"
Now I have no idea what all this means only that my volume cannot be repaired. Can anyone help?

When Disk Utility fails on exit, it means there is an error that it couldn't repair. Usually, people will then turn to Disk Warrior or sometimes TechTool Pro to do the repair. If there is not a hardware problem, in most cases Disk Warrior can fix it. However, if there's an underlying hardware issue, Disk Warrior may not work, in which case you have to replace the hard drive. With that error, I'd go with Disk Warrior for the fix. I recently downloaded and tried installing the new Mountain Lion OS X. After the download i followed all the steps and when i had restarted and started installing, it came with the warning: Macintosh HD is damaged and cannot be repaired, and that i should restart my coumputer. I have tried this several times, and nothing has helped. I have bootcamp on my computer and my windows side works perfectly fine. When i tried looking through my Mac sides files i found a file called OS X install data. I was wondering what would happen if i deleted this file. and how i can fix my problem?

Your Mac partition has become badly corrupt. First priority needs to be baking up your data, if you don't already have it backed up. It may already be too late, unfortunately.
If you already have a full system backup, your life is easy... just erase the Mac partition and restore from the backup. If it's a Time Machine backup, see How do I restore my entire system?.
If you didn't have backups already, once your data is backed up, you need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch, then import data only from your backup. Reinstall any apps from scratch.
If you are unable to make a backup, you may be very badly screwed, but you can try repairing the drive with DiskWarrior. It may repair the problem, or it may fail to and destroy some of your data in the attempt. (Anything you do is a risk without backups.)

Claims damaged and cannot be repaired

I downloaded ML but on istallation, claims Macintosh HD is damaged and cannot be repaired! It was willing to the updates to Lion, which is up to date. (10.7.4). What happened?

I agree with killhippie. When Lion came out, My MacBook Air refused to install, saying the same thing. I wiped and nothing worked. took it to an apple store, they said it had died. I got a new computer and sold my macbook air (Original )

Steps I did in Diskwarrior, Directory - Rebuild
1 link file had a creation date that was
repaired. The root creation date was repaired.
Incorrect values in the volume information were
repaired.
ran hardware test. Hard drives's built in S.M.A.R.T
diagnostics indicated the drive is functioning
normally.
Can you help, can I fix any of this, I did not
delete any of these files since I have ran
diskwarrior, in the past I may have deleted files

Hi h,
First, it is possible that the HD has mechanical issues that SMART cannot detect, and which could in turn cause software/OS issues. If that's the case, it's time for a new HD, but first I would install a fresh OS (see below).

Deleting any one of thousands of OS files can wreak all kinds of havoc, most of it unpredictable. Some have names that you would never consider to be part of the OS, like "unknown."
Can it be fixed?
Odds are, if DW can't do, no. But I would still at least try Repair Disk while booted from your install disc. It's free and will take only a few minutes (though I wouldn't put much hope in it, no reason not to try).
If no success, in your situation, I would back up my data files, erase/zero the HD, and install a new squeaky clean OS. Then I would have confidence that things should be back to normal, but I'd still run Repair Disk regularly for a few weeks to make sure nothing becomes corrupted again.

Mac does not boot past white loading screen and disk cannot be repaired?

So when I turn on my Macbook Pro and it does not boot past a white screen with the Apple logo, loading wheel and progress bar. When the progress bar completes, the Macbook shuts down and when I open it again the cycle is repeated. I have opened it in Safe mode and it still showed the same thing. So I opened it in Recovery Mode and had Disk Utility verify and repair Macintosh HD. As it turns out, Disk Utility said Macintosh HD is beyond repair and I need to back up my files and reformat the whole Mac. Unfortunately, I have never used Time Machine since I started using the Mac and I obviously cannot use it now since startup does not even get past the white screen.
How do I reformat the Mac when it does not even go beyond the white screen during startup? My Mac did not come with any recovery or installation disks. Are my unbacked up files gone for good?

Since you are able to get into Recovery Mode (Command+R), you can erase/format your Mac via Disk Utility.
Your files/data might be OK. One way to get your data off since you have no back up would be to have another Mac and connect the two via a Thunderbolt cable or even an ethernet cable (I think), then restart your 'bad' Mac into Target Mode by restarting and pressing the T key. Then go onto the 'good' Mac and see if you can copy the data files you want over to it.

My ipod classic is not recognised by itunes any more and gives a message, this disc cannot be repaired by this computer. Works well in all other ways, anyone else have this problem?

You probably have to run one or all of the IPHOTO resets/repairs over your library. Its in IPHOTO help which keys you have to hold down while opening IPHOTO.

PDF error message "The file is damaged and cannot be repaired"

Across several versions (upgrades) of Mozilla and from
several sites I have a problem when viewing pages (ie.
from MoinMoin wikis but also other CMS systems) with
embedded PDF documents.
I get an error dialog saying "The file is damaged and cannot be repaired" and a reference to a local cached copy of a
".tmp" file. If I right click on the link and "Save Link"
as a local file then the PDF views correctly (and it renders
correctly within the HTML page with other browsers such
as IE).
The page below (bizarrely) works for me, but similar
documents fail on password protected sites.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior, TechTools Pro, or Data Rescue.

Held option key with restart and using disk utilities the mac HD showing needs repair, but cannot be repaired. Says save as many files as possible and reinstall software. Can't save files, can't get into them. Willing to reinstall without saving, but can't because only disk option for the reinstall showing is the repair disk, and it is showing as locked. What to do?

Sounds like the drive is starting to fail. Have you ever change the drive in that system? If not then it is time to think about doing that, the sooner the better.

My disk0s2 cannot be repaired. Is there a way to recover files on my computer?

My computer had a spinning wheel yesterday that would not go away, so I forced a shutdown (had done it before with no problems). However, now my computer goes straight to the diagnostic tool, and when I try to repair disk0s2, it cannot be repaired. I didn't have Time Machine automatically running, and my most recent backup is too old and I don't want to lose all of our pictures. I'm desperate here - is there any other way to recover files off of this disk?
My MacBook pro is only 2 years old so this came as a surprise. I've scheduled an appointment at the Apple Store but I'm seeing if there is anything I can do to help now...

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

Once you download it, you can install it, input your serial number, register it and apply all necessary updates.

Corrupt catalog cannot be repaired

Lightroom Catalog corrupt. Can't be repaired.
I was uploading a photo shoot to Lightroom 2.7. A few minutes in, I got the following message:
