"Macintosh HD could not be repaired"... Do I need a new hard drive?

So my macbook pro when I turn it on goes straight to the apple screen like normal, then it just sits there and loads forever.
I then booted it with the Disk Utility and tried Verifying and Repairing the disk (I selected my hard drive). The repair couldn't be completed and it said that "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired." I tried it a couple times with the same result.
Then I booted in Safe Mode and ran the "fsck -fy" in which I got a series of errors in response. The following is what I got back:
"Invalid leaf record count
(It should be 283 instead of 287)
**Checking catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
(4, 26092)
**Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
**The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired."
I did a little bit of research on similar problems and everything has said that the hard drive is crashed and that I will need a new one.
Suggestions said to clone the hard drive to hopefully not use the files but that ultimately I need to buy a new one from The Apple Store.
Does anyone have any input as to how I should go about fixing this, keeping the files, and maybe not having to buy a new hard drive? Or what do I need to do to go about having a running computer?

I don't believe that the evidence you have presented necessarily indicates a physical failue of the drive; neither does it disprove it. What we do know is that crucial data structures on the disk have been corrupted.
Ideally, you have a current backup of your data (could be via Time Machine, disk cloning software, and/or online backup; multiple backups would be even better). If so, try reformatting the drive (while booted from your recovery partition if your system is new enough or the disks that came with your older system), reinstalling the system, and restoring from the backup. That should suffice if there is no hardware problem and your backups were from before the corruption.
Let us know if that helps. If you need further assistance, please let us know the model and year of your MacBook Pro and the version of [Mac] OS X you have been running on it.

Did you try zeroing the Drve before installing?
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

Apple store just put a new hard drive in my iMac. My time machine had all my previous info stored so I downloaded it and transferred all my old info. Now the iMac will not connect to the Internet? My Internet is running and I have tried to reset safari with no luck? Please help.

If you know for sure, that your Internet connection is OK, check the status of the connection on your Mac. Got to system perferences and open the Network applet. What is the status of your Ethernet or wireless connection. Is is set to get an ip address via DHCP? Is is showing any IP/Subnet/Router addresses? • SOS! My MacAir could not be turn on after I erase the hard drive memories

After I erase the hard drive memories, the MacAir could not be turn on. When I turn it on, there is a question mark show in the screen n then nothing. What should I do now?

After I erase the hard drive memories, the MacAir could not be turn on.
With no OS to startup to, that would be the expected result.
Restart and hold down the Command+R keys to startup into Recovery Mode. Reinstall the OS.
If that doesn't work (you erased literally the whole drive), restart and hold down Command+Option+R to launch Internet Recovery Mode. The entire OS for your model Mac will be reinstalled.
You will need an Internet connection for either OS installation.

I have this same error on other yellow exclamation marks respective of what kind of device it is.
=> To test my sanity, I put the old hard drive (same size) back in and except for the impact of slowness due to error retries, everything works okay.
    Note:
Same issue (hardware not detected) for Video adapter and Audio.
I bought new USB Wireless adapter to test, and the driver installed but not activated because "not digitally signed", and that same issue fits all the above hardware.  I down loaded them from Toshiba, and they are confirmed installed, but not accepted with digitally signed.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled with same results.

I'm discovering I am not as well as I thought... running on the  AF hard drive which was built with a copy drive from old format drive which was the product of system recovery disc set.
Review for context: Advanced Function HDD
Scenario that exposes harm caused by cloning data from 4K blocks drive to 512 bytes blocked drive (AF)
Toshiba supplied Windows-7 System Restore Discs: to factory state
Then I built the Windows-7 Repair  Disc... used later.
Hard drive was replaced when it caused SMART warning at every system boot.
Acronis was only utility that quickly detected problem (3 sectors had permanent read errors.) Active@Disk Image and Power Quest Drive Image (Ghost) did not detect the issue.
I tried Seagate 500 GB and Western digital 500 GB HDD drives as copy target.
That new drive would not boot: "Required source not found"
Booted My newly created Windows-7 repair disc, and used to to fix startup.
    See images.
That worked and then the ST9500423AS disc booted.
Now... next day I discovered Window Update is not working.
    I get message:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You need to restart your computer.
I ran Microsoft Fixit for updates.  It says it fixed two items.
    I still have the problem.
    The service shows "started"
Control Panel/ ACTION Center/ Maintenance/ Check for Updates
     "No action needed"
"Windows Update does not require any action"
    I checked  Update History...
... It is empty, else window is vacant... blank.
Soooo..... for a sanity check, I swap out hard drive; go back to the old format (which is the one I copied).
It works!  7 updates to install, including SP1... but I did NOT install them.
Switch back to the AF drive... Update doesn't work. I am broke again.
Is this another strange problem caused by the Advance Format issue?
    What to do?
By the way... I did install an Intel storage Matrix driver  update, but I do not have RAID chip, so that driver is not for me... unless I missed out on something.

  • Could not restore from the system image in ext. hard drive for Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hi,
Its been since 2 weeks I am struck with this issue. Any help is appreciated. I want to restore my server (Windows 2008 R2) to the system image I have in my external hard disk. The problem is my image is not getting recognized by the server when I chose the
system repair option while booting with the OS cd.
I placed the files in the folder called WindowsImageBackup in the root folder of the hard disk. The WindowsImageBackup folder has the folder structure like this: WindowsImageBackup\my_pc_name\Backup 2014-03-09 084946\xxxxx.vhd files
I have put the MediaId file inside the "\Backup...." folder. Is it okay? And the MediaId file which I have has .file extension not .bin extension. Is there anything wrong with it?
By the way I tried using the hard disk with USB 2.0 as well as 3.0 . It did not work for both.
What should I do to make my system image recognized?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
The trick to restoring system from backup disk is to place the WindowsImageBackup folder at
the root.  This will allow the recovery utility to automatically find the folder. (E.g. E:\WindowsImageBackup)
Also check with load drivers option in restoration wizard or change boot order in bios to detect usb first then physical drive.
    Hope this help you.

  • Aready had an account my computer crashed and had it repaired they put in a new hard drive now I can't install the new download how do i fix this

Already had an account had to have a new hard drive put in my lap top they wiped out my info I need to install the new download
but I keep getting an erroe message " unable to download itunes 64 setup exe. The connection to this server was reset". What do I do?

This completely *****. iTunes lists none of my music, although the music is on my iPod. When I click on the sync button, it starts to sync -- for about 5 seconds -- and does nothing. So I had to manually import all of my music from my hard drive into iTunes, but it still won't sync. Same thing with videos and photos.

  • My MacBook Pro HD could not be repaired

My MacBook Pro is stuck on the white loading screen. I have tried booting it in Safe Mode and doing a PRAM reboot and neither have worked. I have also run the diagnostic (by pressing shift + command  + v) and it said the volume macintosh hd could not be repaired
I cant find my installation Disc.
Is there a download server for Mac OS 10.6,8 ?

Use the original install disk that came with your MBP and start the MBP holding the C key.
Proceed with the instructions and when you see a menu bar on top of the display, select UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu, select DISK UTILITY.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the HDD cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro 13" 5.5 (mid 2009) new hard drive not detected

    Hi,
New here, tried searching for the answer here but could not find any.
I got a few hard drive error on my old macbook black 250gb drive that I put in this MacBook pro.
The system became really slow and kept hanging (beachball).
So I went out and bought a new 500gb WD Scorpio Blue 5400rpm.
The problem is that my MBP doesn't detect the new HDD when I put it in there (doesn't even spin up when correctly put in). It does spin up when only connected to the sata connector but still no detection.
When I put it in an external USB cradle there is no problem.
Also found out that way that the old hdd works fine when booted from the USB cradle.
Does anyone here have any idea what the problem could be?
I'm starting to think it's the controller, but that would probably mean I can go out and buy a new MBP...

  • Apple put in a new hard drive, but not the computer is VERY LOUD!

I just got my 13 month old Intel iMac back from the Apple store -- it needed a new hard drive. When I first turned on the computer, it was very loud, and I thought they gave me someone else's computer by mistake, so I checked the Serial Number, and apparently it's my computer.
I can't take this noise. What's going on? The fan wasn't broken, but this sounds like a new fan in the computer that is much louder than the old fan.
Also, the Apple geniuses told me the computer would use Time Machine to install all my old settings (I have an external hard drive hooked up to the iMac). But it's not working at all. Whenever I tell the new hard drive to "Restore to a Time Machine Backup" and select the backup hard drive, the computer screen goes gray, and it starts all over again (with the "Hello" screen in all the different languages.
Please help. I guess the MIP issue is the noise -- I can't work with a computer this loud. It gives me a headache. Should I just take it back to the Apple store, and have the noise fixed first? There never was a noise problem before I took the computer in for the broken hard drive.
    Thanks.

    HI,
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If that doesn't help, take it back.
Tip... whenever you take a computer in for service and you pick it up, make sure it's running without problems *before you leave*. Especially in this case where you got it home and now have this noise issue.

  • After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely

After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Mac Fusion drive: The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be unmounted

    Hi
I recently purchased a Mac Mini with the fusion drive.  When I perform a verify and repair of the disk, I get the error "The disk Macintosh HD could not be unmounted".  This does not occur with any of my other computers, imac or powermac (also running mountain lion).  So I am wondering if I have a defective Fusion/HD or if this is simply a peculiarity of the fusion drive itself.  Please comment.

If your Fusion drive can be repaired with Disk Utility, it will be shown with red lettering. If you are not seeing red lettering, then you need to boot into Recovery mode to use that Disk Utility. When you order a Fusion drive equipped Mac, there is a special version of Disk Utility included in OS X specifically for operation with Fusion Drives.
If you have any open files on the volume you wish to verify/repair, then Disk Utility will throw its hands up and give you that cannot unmount drive message. Make sure you have quit all applications you were using that may be accessing files on the disk in question.
