Macintosh hd disc says it is full, but when i go to my memory it says that there is plenty of space available. what do i do?

I am not even trying to same a document right now, but this popup message continues to appear.
is there anything that i can do to keep the message from appearing? i have deleted my browsing history, emptied my trash, removed unwanted apps from my computer and the message continues to appear.
