Macintosh HD Info utility -definition of capacity

I have recently taken delivery of my new mac mini - I ordered the 320GB.
I have have finally seen the light and converted from Windows to Mac!... although I am running vm fusion to support some of my old Windows apps. Please excuse my ignorance with this question, but I am trying to determine why my "Available" disk space is 273GB and the "Capacity" is 298GB. I expected the "Capacity" to be the starting 320GB and the "Available" to be what's left after MAC o/s, IWorks, VM Fusion and Windows XP were installed? If I started with 320GB it means the o/s and apps alone have used up 47GB. I am not familiar with the size of the Mac s/ware?....but this was more than I was expecting. I have tried using Finder to piece the sizing together, but I have not been able to figure it out.
Does this disk usage sound correct?
Thanks for any feedback.

Unfortunately in the real world, a 320gb HD only formats to 298GB...so that is what you really have available.
And 28GB for the OS seems correct as well....If you are concerned about space the good news is, additional storage space has never been cheaper.

  • Under Macintosh HD info I have 240.3GB available, but under bootcamp and disk utility I only have 70gb available?

I went to make a bootcamp partition under the impression i had 240.3gb of available hard drive space when infact I only have 70gb available according to bootcamp and disk utility. What's causing this? Which is right?

I have fixed this issue. Time Machine mobile backups, backups stores locally when the backup drive ins't available, was causing the conflicting readings. I have disables mobiles backups with a sudo command and the .mobilebackups folder has deletes (the folder was 146gb!!).
This is perhaps a mountain lion bug because my backups are all up to date but the local backup didn't delete itself?

  • Why does my Macintosh HD and Utility Disk give different available space values?

My MacBook Pro (about a year and a half old) has started running extremely slowly out of the blue, to the point it is barely functional. I've tried basically everything, restarting, cleaning up the desktop, clearing out my downloads file, starting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, updating the operating system. Now my Mac HD says it has about 400GB free space out of 700GB, however today I was running utility disk to see if that would detect a problem and when selecting the first Macintosh HD option it says I only have around 18MB free, is this my problem? and if so how do I fix it? and why would I have two different values for available space? The second Macintosh HD entry does have the same available space in the get info page as is listed in the Disk Utility.

  • Event definition and capacity calculation

    Hi,
Due to the implementation of a CSM, there are a couple of things that I need to clarify in order to be sure about the Server requirements.
    1. What is the definition of an event in a security device? Is it a violation to rules? Is it a connection fail??
    2. How could I posibbly know the storage capacity required to handle the events send by an ASA? Is there an especific size for this logs/packets???
    Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Douglas,
The events from the ASA are simply the syslogs that are generated by the firewall. However, certain syslogs are "deeply parsed" by CSM to provide additional details. Here is a list of syslogs that are deeply parsed (the rest are displayed as raw syslog data):
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/security_management/cisco_security_manager/security_manager/4.0/user/guide/evntchap.html#wp191617
As for the storage requirements, this will depend on the amount/level of logs that are generated by your ASA.
    Hope that helps.

  • BPM:  Retrieving info utilizing a JDBC in my BPM process

I receive an IDOC from R/3 which I want to evaluate and send to a third party system(RNIF adapter).  Upon receiving the message I transform the data and then attempt to send the required fields through a JDBC adapter to retrieve needed information from a SQL database.  This information will then be used to determine what leg of the BPM process it will travel.
My issue is how to configure the send step for connecting to the SQL database using a JDBC adapter.

  • Macintosh HD info incorrect?

    I have a 60GB Macbook Air 11' Mid 2012
I really only use it for the internet, to back up my iPhone and iPad  and not really much else.
Today it told me my startup disk was full and i needed to delete some things. I opened up "about this mac" and noticed it said i had 4gb of photos on my computer but i have no pictures except for the one i have as my desktop.
My OTHERS section is eating up most of the space at 29GB
is there anything i could do?

  • IDVD create disk image larger than DVD-R capacity

    Here's the background:
    - I made an iMovie 6 in 16:9 NTSC that is 1:32:00:06 long. I put that into iDVD 6, use the 5.0 Theme called "Wedding White", no slideshow, just a few photos and one 128k audio AAC file for menu music. Motion menu right now is about 5min45sec, but I can change that no problem.
    - In iDVD 6's "Project info", left hand column shows "NTSC", "Widescreen (16:9)", "Best Quality", "Single-Layer (SL) - 4.2GB"; all correct.
Right hand column - Project Duration is 97:47min, Motion Menus is 5:46 of 7:30, Tracks 1 of 99, Menus 3 of 99; all green.
"DVD Capacity" was shown as ~3.3GB before the burning.
    Here's the problem:
    - When I first burned directly onto a single-layer DVD-R, an error will come on during burning or multiplexing near the end. Disc will eject, and the disc IS PLAYABLE on all DVD players. Only problem is that the movie will end (or says "Disc scratched or dirty", then crashes DVD Player on my Mac) at around 1:30:50; about 1min 11sec short. iDVD will also hang, and need to be forced quit.
    - If I check that finished DVD-R with Disk Utility, it'll show:
    --Capacity 4.4GB (4,706,074,624)
    --Used 4.4GB (4,739,385,344)
    - Same results with two decent media, a Sony 16x and a Ritex G05 8x.
    - After reading a lot of posts in this discussion board, I tried two things:
    1. Clean up my primary HD, which was down to <10GB free. I realized that I need double the disk space to properly burn. Now, it's at around 30GB free.
    2. Instead of direct burn, I saved it as Disc Image. Results:
-- Video_TS file totally fine when played with DVD Player.
-- Disc Utility shows: Capacity 4,739,923,968 Bytes, Used 4,739,385,344 Bytes
But when I tried to burn that image onto a disc in Disk Utility, it says the media doesn't have enough room.
    3. I went back to iDVD 6's "Project Info", and the "DVD Capacity" bar is now filled, yellow and says "4.2GB of 4.2GB".
[I actually tried earlier with a slightly different version with longer motion menus, and a slightly longer movie. And the DVD it tried to burn is even larger, at 4,847,159,296 Bytes. Similar results, but that DVD will end about 4 minutes short. But I didn't write down all the iDVD 6 details that time.]
    SOOOOOO....
It seems to me that iDVD 6 is miscalculating its rendering or compression ratio, and is creating a final disc image larger than the capacity of a single-layer DVD-R, even though all parameters are set and displayed correctly.
For me, I'll cut down on the motion menu duration to see if that will help, as I'm right now JUST BARELY over the capacity.
Because of the early audio problem with iMovie/iDVD 6, this is the my first "finished" iDVD 6 product. Before, I have had no problem with movies that are close to the 120-minute limit, though this is the first time I use a 5.0 Theme with motion menus.
So, any ideas, any comments? Please post. Also, what else should I do besides posting here to let Apple and other users know of this problem? Thanks!

    G4 Gigabit Ethernet Dual 1.6GHz Mac OS X (10.4.5) Pioneer DVR-110D, 1.12G RAM

    An update:
I cut down the loop duration of the motion menus, from 5:46 to 2:50. The resulting disc image is down to 4.25GB (4,563,716,096 bytes) and will fit onto a single-layer DVD-R.
So, I finally made my first successful DVD using iDVD 6. Still don't know why this has been such an adventure compared to earlier iLife versions.

    Hello,
I believe there are two different issues that may be occurring here, so we can start with the easiest one first, the error message in AuthoringDgraph.  The error message is being triggered as it can't find a property within your records that has been flagged as a Record Specifier (aka Record Spec or RecSpec).  In the Endeca world, this is similar to what a Primary Key on a table would accomplish in a relational database.  These Record Specs are used in many ways for record retrieval, but it's not neccessary to have one put in place.
If you don't specify a property to be a Record Spec, than Endeca will create one for you.  However - and this is where the error message comes in - you cannot perform updates to the data, known as a Partial Update.  Since Endeca hasn't been told what property will uniquely represent a specific record, it can't receive updates to update/delete them.  That's where the "Rapid Updates" comes into play.
There are two choices for this, firstly specify a property as a Record Spec, either through Developer Studio, or through the IOC/CSV overrides if you're using the product catalog integration method (what ATG uses to send data to Endeca).  The second option is to disable Rapid Update (partial updates) functionality in your index - you'll need to comment out references to "partial" directories in the various Dgraph XML configurations in your config/scripts directory.  However, that does go against Endeca Best Practices which are to always have a Record Spec.
And now onto the second issue, the error with the "backup_log_dir_for_component_AuthoringDgraph" script.  This isn't an uncommon type of error, and may be unrelated to the issue above.  The usual culprits for this are permission errors, inability to obtain a lock, etc.  These scripts are run by the EAC and not the application, so are stored in a different location.
Firstly, find the installation directory for Platform Services on your system.  Inside it should be a logging directory, and you're looking for workspace/logs/utility/<appName>.backup_log_dir_for_component_AuthoringDgraph.txt inside there.  Open up that file, and it should help to clarify what the issue is - if not, then please post it's contents here and we can delve deeper.
    Best,
    - Jeff

  • When attempting to format my new internal Hitachi 500 GB hard drive I get an I/o error and the drive is reading as a 3.4 TB drive in disk utility.  Any thoughts?

I have a 2007 MacBook. 2 years ago I upgrade the HD to a 500 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi. That drive just failed so I purchased another from the same store. When attempting to reload the OS the drive was not showing up as an option when asked to select a destination drive for the OS. I then exited the install and opened disk utility. Disk utility lists the capacity of the drive as 3.4 TB and when attempting to partition the drive it gives an input/output error. So I tried the hard drive from my other MacBook which already has an OS on it and it works fine. I surmised that the drive was faulty and had the store exchange it for another of a different model, but same specs. Second drive is doing the exact same thing. I figured there must be something wrong internally with the logic board so I tried using my other MacBook to load the OS and it's giving me the same exact error. Now I'm wondering what the deal is. When using the original 160 GB HD that came in the machine it works fine but the brand new one doesn't work. Any thoughts?

  • How can I fix a problem with incorrect drive capacity?

When I do a get info on the drive capacity it says I have only 2.64gb free. However when I open it and total the folders there is near 300gb free which is what it should be. I can't find what is taking up the space

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Disk Utility Cant Repair my OS X Drive

    Hello There,
I Had A Problem With my OS X Basic 3TB Hard Drive. It Has Two Partition 1tb Is My OS X drive And 2tb Is For My Data. When I Start Up My I Mac It Gives Me A Loading Sign After That When It Completes My I Mac Shutdown. I Goto Power on By CMD+R And Select Disk Utility To Repair My Drive. There My OS X Drive Is Disable And My Data Drive Is Mounted And Working. I Click On Repair By Selecting My OS X Drive But It Give Me A Dialogue That "DISK UTILITY STOPPED REPAIRING MACINTOSH HD" (Disk Utility Can't Repair This Disk. Backup As Many Of Your Files As Possible, Reformat the disk, And Restore Your Backed Up Files.)
Excuse Me... Mr. Computer I Need My Important Files In This Partition, So How Can I Reformat This
Please Help Me Is There Is Any Way To Repair My Disk.. Please Please Please....
I Am Using I Mac 27 Inch With Mavericks 10.9.3

Why, why, why would you initial-cap every word in your post?
    Do you have a backup?
Do you have an external hard drive? You should have an external HD with an operating system and some repair utilities installed on it, for backing up your internal drive and for situations like this. Disk Warrior may be able to help if the problem with your system partition is directory damage. Another app to have on hand is Data Rescue 3.

  • External HDD capacity available used

I have a 1.5 TB Seagate GoFlex Desk Media (External Hard Drive). I have just formatted it to Mac OS Journaled (it use to be NTFS, and before that it was FAT). And for some reason in Disk Utility is states:
    Capacity: 1.5 TB (1,500,298,346,496 Bytes)
    Available: 1.5 TB (1,499,503,353,856 Bytes)
    Used: 795 MB (794,992,640 Bytes)
Why does it say I have used 795 MB? When I just erased it?
    Thanks.

Yes, the system must have a place to keep track of where your stuffs goes.
Think of it as the labels on the outside of filing cabinets drawers. They tell you where to find stuff in the cabinets.
Well the system needs the same thing to keep track of where it sticks your stuff on the disk.

  • Receiving Invalid B-tree node size in Disk Utility

My mac mini has recently bit the dust.  I did a hard shut down by holding down the power button.  Since then I have not been able to bring it back.  It started with a folder with a ? in it.  Sometimes it sits at the apple logo, and other times it goes to a gray screen and just reboots eventually.  I am running Snow Leopard, and I have booted from the install cd.  I have tried running Repair Disk in Disk Utility, but I receive the following error:  "Invalid node structure Invalid B-tree node size The volume could not be verified completely.  Volume repair complete.  Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.  Error:  Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files."
In the pop up window it says "Disk Utility stopped repairing "macintosh HD" Disk Utility can't repair this disk.  Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.  On the left hand side of the window I see 60.01GB ST96812AS Media, and then I see Macintosh HD offset underneath.  The Macintosh HD is in light gray and is not mounted.  When I try to Mount it it gives me an error and tells me to repair the disk.
My question is do you think Disk Warrior would work or something like that software?  I tried to do an Archive and Install, but since the HD won't mount I can't do an installation.  Is my HD dead?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Matt

As you can see, I received no help from this forum.  I ended up replacing the hard drive after trying disk warrior unsuccessfully!  I wish you luck and anyone else who has this issue.

    1) This is the forum for asking about OS X, not windows. Getting answers about windows usage is here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
    2) What are you using to monitor disk usage?
    3) Why are you monitoring it so closely?
    4) Have you heard of virtual memory or swap files?( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_memory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging#Windows_NT )-could this be the cause of what you are seeing?
