Macintosh HD is damaged and can not be repaired
I have been having problems with my MacPro Book; it had the gray with apple and wouldn't do anything. I followed the direction and now I have Macintosh HD is damaged and can not be repaired. Is there anything I can do at this point?
Reboot while holding down Command + R, see if you can use Disk Utility to erase the drive. If so, reinstall OS X.

The other day i decided to purchase and download Mac OS X Lion off from the AppStore for my iMac 21"inch, however after i sucsessfully downloaded the OS it began to Installing, then when it passes 5 minutes of installing the window displays a word saying "Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired" I AM PANICKING, it told me to restart the iMac so i follow the instruction then when i do restart the my iMac the apple logo goes flashing crazy with a some sort of "Your hard disk is screwed" sign. What should i do?! im thinking of re-installing the mac os x snow leopard again. But i dont no im going crazy this is a $1000 or more computer that im dealing here with . PLEASE IF SOMEBODY HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM LETS FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS! :'(Hei guys thanks for the fast replies and tips, it finally worked! i decided to clean everything up by wiping all of my data which means 'start fresh' and re-install OS X Leopard. yes the OS X Lion works superb on my iMac, guess this is not an HDD failure or 'physic' damage. So much thanks!
NOTE: Oh for those of you who are having this same problem as i do, keep in mind dont panic to much and act crazy with your Apple imac's or macbook's, ease up and do as i say:
when it tells you, "Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired" do as it say, restart your device, once it is restarted quickly insert your Snow Leopard Installation Disc and it will take you to the 'installation screen' once your there you will see 'utility' up in the bar click that and click disc utility, once there click on your Macintosh HD and click on 'Verify Disc' & 'Repair Disk'. Then finally, restart your device again, If it runs smoothly then re-install OS X Lion off from the App Store (Again, and yes im not joking). If it doesnt run smoothly, re-install your Snow Leopard OS then install OS X Lion from the App Store.

I need help getting my iMac working again.
Last night I tried to install OSX Mavericks, my previous/current OS is 10.6.8
After restarting the Mavericks install screen appears and then stops and give me this error message:
"Install Failed
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
The OS x upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Mackintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data , erase your disk and try installing again.
Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
I tried restarting numerous time but to no avail.
Please help!Have you got back to restore from if all else fails?
Try booting from the grey restore disk that came with the Mac: disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. Hopefully it'll boot, albeit slowly. At the first screen select your language and from the menu bar of the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD>Repair Disk. Hopefully DU wil repair the errors. Click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try to restart as normal from the Apple menu. -

Did a system restore to a past date. That didn't fix the problem. Installed adobe 9.1...didn't fix the problem.
I have Vista 64 bit. HP Pavillion mf9400
Also installed the recommended Adobe Digital thingy...that didn't fix the problem.
So what is the problem? And is there a stupid Vista fix?

And, to the amount of memory that the application to use maintain that full page, is added to the application's memeory usuage. They are all active, and even taking up time on the internet, slowing your connection down. There are all time in the Mozilla Forums question about some one having more than to or 20 tabs open and saved, then are wondering why mozilla products are slow. the some one says dump the items in tabs and they act like high powered race cars, after the tab dump.
Just the way I feel. I am up for new and modern but when it slows things down, I have no use, nor desire for it.

Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks failed - disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

I'm afraid the answer is exactly what I don't want. But here is my situation.
I've been trying to download and install Mavericks - I was running Snow Leopard. My system was working fine - I wanted to upgrade so that I could run a game on it - but it required Mavericks.
Finally, it looked like Mavericks was installing. Once I restarted my computer, I got the following message:
"Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer (there's a big scary yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it below this). The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
Every time I restart, I get the same message, I can't back up my data and erase my disk like it wants me to; it won't let me. I can't get back to my normal computer. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it doesn't work - it just keeps restarting over and over again. If my computer is really this determined to not let me have Mavericks, fine, but I at least want my old computer back. As it is now, I can't do anything on it besides restart it.
If I could just get to Finder, I could save some files and just reformat it - if the hard disk can be repaired. Even if it can't, I just need my documents. Here is the Installer Log:

Thank you for any help you can give me.You are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu you will have access to Disk Utility.
From here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon; or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key. Either way, that takes a few minutes. -

I'm getting the above error message after trying many different "fixes" described on message boards. Here's the issue: I have a Macbook Pro that developed a problem with an endless boot cycle. The solution ended up being to wipe the drive using Disk Utility. I then reinstalled OSX from a Snow Leopard disk, and the computer appeared to be working normally. Then, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from the App Store, I get this message when the computer tries to reboot and install the OS. I have tried verifying and repairing the disk, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, resetting the SMC...but always I get the following error message:
Install Failed
OSX could not be installed on your computer
The OSX upgrade couldn't be started because the dis Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired

Thanks for your helpI did not verify/repair from Snow Leopard...simply reinstalled then attempted to download/install Mavericks from the App Store. Having seen this suggestion, I've now rebooted into recovery mode, and when I try to verify/repair, it aborts both processes and I get the respective errors: "The volume couldnot be verified completely" and "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

How do I backup to my external hd on 10.6.8 if the disk is damaged and can't be repaired?
Hi! So, I'll get straight to the point. I'm running 10.6.8 on my mac, which is about 5 years old. I attempted to install OSX Mavericks last night, so I could update some of my software. Anyways, the computer restarts and opens up the installer for OSX Mavericks, but after about a minute of installing, it shows that the Mavericks install failed. The upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.
Could someone tell me (step by step) how to back up all of my data, erase the disk, and install again? I have an external HD by the way.

But, how do I boot it from my mac if I can't get past the installation screen of Mavericks? I'm running on my other mac right now, if that helps. I've tried to use disk utility to repair, but it's greyed out. I honestly just want to retrieve all of my data, wipe the drive, and then install a new one. I just want to know how to do that.

Mavericks install failed, says disk is damaged and can't be repaired. Help.
My install failed early in the setup process, and said that my HD is damaged and can't be repaired. It reboots in install mode, I go to disk utility, and can't run repair. I've tried to boot to safe mode, but the progress bar goes about a third of the way and it just powers off, so no way to get in to backup or do anything on this machine. My time machine backup is old, but mostly I just have music that I can redownload from iTunes or re-rip from cd, so not worried about data loss. So do I reformat? How would I get an OS on there again, since there would be no way to boot up or get an OS Download onto that machine? This is the first time I miss the old cd/dvd disk distribution. I'm stumped, any help and guidance is appreciated. It's a MacBook Pro if that matters.
Have you got back to restore from if all else fails?
Try booting from the grey restore disk that came with the Mac: disk in drive and restart holding down the 'c' key. Hopefully it'll boot, albeit slowly. At the first screen select your language and from the menu bar of the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD>Repair Disk. Hopefully DU wil repair the errors. Click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Try to restart as normal from the Apple menu. -
When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website using Safari, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." When I save the same PDF file using FireFox it opens up immediately. Is there any way to correct this problem with Safari?

"The file is damaged and could not be repaired" error when trying to open a PDF in Reader
A few of our employess (only 3 out of over 100 so far) have been getting the error, "The file is damaged and could not be repaired" when trying to open some PDFs. Other people are able to open the same PDF files with no error. It's happening on about 10% of the time. I've read a bunch of threads here with this isue and tried some suggested fixes and nothing has resolved the issue. Here is what I have found works and does not work and the info on their computers:
Computers:
1 Dell Vostro desktop running WIndows 7
1 Toshiba Satellite C55 runnign Windows 8
1 Samsung ATIV Book 4 running Windows 8
All using Adobe Reader XI but we did uninstall that version and tried previous versions and still got the error.
Did Not Work:
As suggested by the company that we use online for claims adjustments where this error is occuring, we tried using a different PDF creator since the files were created using a free PDF creator by the employees. PDF995 and PDFcreator (pdfforge) did not resolve the issue. I then created the PDFs with my Adobe Acrobat, uploaded from my computer to the online program, and that did not resolve the issue.
Saving the file to hard drive and then opening in Adobe did not work.
Turning off Protected Mode and Enhanced Security did not work.
Compatibility View settings enabled in Internet Explorer 10 did not resolve the issue. The previously mentioned claims adjustment software company we use online was code for IE so is not fully compatible with other browsers.
That being said I did try to open the PDF files in Chrome and it also did not work. Same error message.
Does work:
I download the file they cannot open onto my hard drive, open in Adobe Acrobat, Save as a pdf, then email it to them and they can open it via email attachment.
If they close the error and continue trying to open the file over and over sometimes it will eventually open.
Is there a setting in Windows that is preventing them from opening a small % of files some of the time? Thanks in advance for any help!

The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem. -
I am running OS X 10.7.5 and Adobe Reader 11.0.02. In the last few days I have been unable to open PDF's downloaded from the web. Reader gives the error message 'There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired'. Removing Reader and trying to use Preview to open these files give the error 'Preview cannot open this file. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise' (or something like that). Downloading the same files with Reader removed from my Mac Preview opens the files OK.
I was recently prompted to update Adobe software but did not note exactly what the update was nor when it was done.
Reader and Preview will both open PDFs I downloaded a week ago. Reader will also open files downloaded on another Mac running OS X 10.0.0 and copied to my Mac. Any ideas?Back up all data.

I keep getting the message, "the file is damaged and could not be repaired"
I have a newer Gateway PC equipped with Windows Vista Ultimate, and recently downloaded the free Adobe Reader 8.1.1 version to it.
I'm not very computer literate, so I'm not sure which terminology to use all the time...sorry.
When I attempt to open (view, read, download?) a pdf file, it starts the download process, showing the progress at the bottom of the page....for example, it might say, "downloading (16.2kb out of 543.5kb)"
Usually, about a minute or so into the download, the word "downloading" changes to "downloaded", the action stops, and shortly after (on the window with the gray Adobe Reader background), a smaller message window pops up, declaring, "the file is damaged and could not be repaired".
A friend suggested that there was probably a problem with the original downloading of Reader and recommended that I completely remove it from my system, then re-install it. Reluctantly, with a very slow dial-up connection network, I did as he suggested, then painfully sat through about a two-hour download AGAIN of Reader 8.1.1
After the download was completed again, I successfully opened a few of the pdf files which I was previously having the problems with. Problem solved??? NOT QUITE!!! After about three or four successful file downloads (openings/readings of the files), it again started to do the same thing, where it would not complete the downloading/opening process and again leaving the message, "the file is damaged and could not be repaired."
I am very confident that the files are not the problem, as many of my friends have viewed/opened those same pdf files repeatedly with no issues, BUT WHAT IS CAUSING THIS??? As I said before, I'm not very computer savvy as it is, and adding the newer Windows Vista Ultimate OS probably hasn't helped any.
1. Is the problem with Windows Vista?
2. Is the problem with Adobe Reader 8.1.1 (or the downloading of it)?
3. Is the problem related to the security settings of my computer?
4. Is the problem likely virus related (I use the purchased McAfee protection)?
I just don't know where or how to start looking for the solution, other than thru this forum, and I simply can't afford the time to remove and re-install Adobe Reader 8.1.1 each time I need the use of my computer.

Most of the time this works, however some of the time we get blank PDF files (<10KB), and sometimes we get filled PDF files that we cannot open in Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 - we get the "file is damaged and could not be repaired" error. However, I can view this "damaged" pdf just fine in the Chrome built-in PDF viewer, and I can open it using Foxit Reader and Nitro Reader. And if I open it in one of those programs and then save it under a new name, I can open the newly saved file in Adobe Reader. So why is it that everything except Adobe Reader can open this file?

Trouble opening pdf's - I have received several pdf's from a friend via e-mail (Thunderbird). Some of them open just fine but others give me the message: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." My friend made sure that the files in question opened without issue on his computer (a PC). Further, I was able to open one of these "damaged" files on my Android phone, but I cannot open them on the Macbook Air. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
