  • Macintosh HD disappears from Bootcamp after OS X reinstallation

Recently, my Macbook Pro mid-2011 began to feel sluggish. I decided to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion by creating a Restore HD with a USB stick. I formatted my Macintosh HD drive while I was in Recovery using disk utility, in order to make room for my new OS. I reinstalled Mountain Lion without problem. When it comes time to restore, I chose not too, opting to selectively restore from my Time Machine after I created a profile and logged in. After logging it, I only restored my settings and applications from Time Machine, not my User Profile. After, I selectively moved my music, movies, pictures, documents, and downloads folders back from the Time Machine backup. Everything was going well. However, when I rebooted into Bootcamp (I have Steam running on my Windows 7 64 bit to play games), I noticed that under Hard Disk Drives, my Macintosh HD drive was missing. My Bootcamp disk was there, and so would any external drive that I connected. I thought it was a bug so I reinstalled Bootcamp. Nothing happened. I restarted and uninstalled Bootcamp and tried to reinstall it after restarting. I received a 2753 error. After some web search, I came across a Apple Support Communites discussion suggesting that I deleted a specific file from system32 called AppleOSSMgr.exe (here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3336039?start=0&tstart=0). I did so and my Bootcamp reinstallation proceeded smoothly. I restarted again and to my surprise, my Macintosh HD was still missing. I have enclosed picture of the issue below.
    Higher resolution shot here: http://i.imgur.com/2yqSH.png
I have Paragon NTFS installed but I don't think it is causing this because it never gave me problems before. This is a somewhat annoying issue because I have my iTunes Windows app connected to my music folder on my Mac partition, which no longer exists, therefore I can no longer play any of my music. Does anyone know what is going on?

Open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    sudo chown -R $UID ~/
Press Enter and type in your administrator password to correct the ownership. This issue may happen if a recreated user account has a numeric UID different from the UID assigned to the original account with that home folder location and the old account was deleted using a method other than the one provided by the Accounts pane of System Preferences, which moves the previous home folder to Deleted Users.

  • Access denied macintosh hd while in bootcamp-win7

    hi!
i'm a new mac user and obviously i need some help
i 've recently installed windows 7 on bootcamp in order to run 3ds max. i also installed PARAGON HFS+ 10.0 for Windows and i was able to save my max files on my macintosh partition.
i also had installed PARAGON NTFS on mac in order to be able to read/write on my old external drives that used to work on windows and all worked fine!
today i made some changes (cmd orders) in order to activate windows and i don't know if that caused the problem but now i don't have acces to my mac drive when i'm using windows.
It is visible but when i try to open it says it is not accessible/does not contain a recognized file system/need to format the disk!!!
when i unistall Paragon hfs+ i have only read acces to my mac partition and when i reistall it again...access denied
    what's wrong with it?
    can someone help me please?
    thanks in advance

If you installed Windows and the Boot Camp support files, you will only have read-only access to the files on the Mac Partitions (and if you didn't install the Boot Camp support files, you wouldn't even have read access).
If you want full read/write access to your MacOS partitions, then you will need to install a third party utiltiy for that.  I am aware of 2 such commercial tools: Media4's "Mac Drive" and Paragon's "HFS+ for Windows".  Both tools seem to work well, but a few years ago I made the switch from the Media4 software to Paragon's because of minor things that annoyed me.  The Paragon software integrates more into the Windows file systems drivers and you can treat the partitions like any other.  This was a nice feature which caused me to switch my 4 licenses from Media4 to Paragon...

  • 'Macintosh HD' missing from Disc Utility

Have 2013 MacBook Pro. Had some minor issues, so checked disc utility. Told to reinstall OS X, as the directories weren't reparable. Tried reinstalling via disc that came with the computer, but could never get back to desktop screen. Tried one last time and the 'Macintosh HD' was missing from Disc Utility screen. Called Apple who said the HD might need to be replaced, which is really unacceptable after 2 years of light use. Ran Apple Diagnostics on Hardware, came back 'no problems found." Two questions: can I get back to HD and how do I get from the reinstallation to desktop?  Thanks!!

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.
If successful, you should see a revolving globe.
This will connect you to the Apple servers.
Follow the instructions and you should see a 4 option menu.
Select Disk Utility and then First Aid.  Run Verify and Repair.
Then you can select the OSX reinstall option.  It will reinstall the original OSX that the MBP came with.
If no success, then the best option is an Apple store genius bar appointment.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

  • 1440x900 resolution missing in Bootcamp (MBPr+Retina)

I just installed Windows 8 RP on my new MacBook Pro with Retina display and realized that the 1440x900 resolution option is completely missing from Windows (and games).
I've tried installed NVIDIA's latest 650M beta drivers (304.79), but they refuse to install. The frustrating thing about this is that 1440x900 is the most natural resolution for many games on the Retina display (since 2880x1800 either runs poorly, or reduces the UI of many games to unreadably small sizes). Intermediary resolutions cause ugly blurry jagged edges due to scaling.
    Any ideas?

Games are only installed on Home editions by default, so you have to install them
Games = go to control panel > Programs and Features
Then look on left of list of apps and there is a link 'Turn windows features on and off' click that then in the dialog that comes up tick games then 'ok' then games will be installed.
there are also plenty of games int the store... just click windows/command key then click on blue store icon (top left)

  • USB drive installation missing in bootcamp

I have a macbook pro mid-2010, currently up to date in all firmware. My disk drive's ability to burn dvd's is apparently shot, so the only alternative to install windows is via usb drive, however that option in bootcamp doesn't even exist. Someone please tell me how to fix this.
    thanks,
          taylort210

By default,  Apple only enables that option if your Mac did not ship with an internal optical drive.  Since yours did, the option would not be enables, as Boot Camp will expect you to install from teh optical drive shipped in your machine.  If your drive is malfunctioning, you can get it repaired for free under Apple Care (assuming you purchased the extended warranty and the 3 years since date of purchase is not expired).  If your Apple Care has expired, you can purchase a replacement drive form OWC for about $80 USD.

  • Dock missing after Bootcamp session.

    Hi there folks.
I was wondering if any of you experiences a phenomenon like that:
Almost every time after I ran Windows Vista SP2 on my iMac via BootCamp and reboot into Mountain Lion the dock is hidden, and sometimes the System Preferences window hangs at the top of the screen. Can BootCamp or Vista do that?
It's not a tragic problem I know but I'm always extra suspicious when it comes to Windows.

    Hello red:
The +"strange behavior"+ you mentioned should be explored further. What had been happening? You may very well be having hardware problems that no reinstall will fix.
A further observation. Apple recommends (in a knowledge base article) NOT to use fsck but run repair disk from the software install DVD instead. As I recall, this applies to OS X 10.4 and later.
I would run the Apple hardware test (boot from your software install DVD while holding down the "D" key).
Incidentally, IMHO, an erase and install should be reserved for disasters. An archive and install gets one to essentially the same place without the risk.

  • Bootcamp not showing up in boot loader

Today I needed to resize my Windows Vista Ultimate partition for work, so I used Disk Utility to crate an image from the partition. After that I used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition, and then create a larger partition. After this was done I went back into Disk Utility and restored the partition using the image I created earlier.
In OS X I can mount the partition and access the files and it seems everything was restored correctly. When I restart my machine and hold down the Option key to bring up the boot loader, Bootcamp is no longer an option. The only partition I can boot from is HD.
    Please help! Thanks

Did you actually Install a version of Windows into that Boot Camp Partition? It doesn't sound like you did.
You'll need a copy of Windows 7 or 8, 64bit, and a valid license key code for whatever version you plan on installing.

  • Windows 7 "Dim the display" and brightness controls missing

Is this another driver problem? I would think the Nvidia drivers would support this new feature in Windows 7.
    http://www.technospot.net/blogs/windows-7-automatically-dim-display-screen/

I suspect you need another driver (not the video card driver) since these function require control of the backlight. It seems Apple does not provide a standard driver that can be used by Windows as the display brightness can only be controlled through Apple's bootcamp drivers in the bootcamp control panel or using the keyboard shortcuts.
Even in Vista, if you go to the Windows mobility centre (Win+X)there should be a panel for display brightness. This panel is missing in bootcamp, suggesting the necessary drivers are missing. This is a shame, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Apple to ever provide these. Then again, I didn't think Apple would ever fix the touchpad drivers for Windows, but they seem to have finally done so in the Bootcamp 3.0 beta drivers, so maybe someday...
Windows 7 also supports automatic brightness changes based on an ambient light sensor, but again, no appropriate driver supplied by Apple...

  • Failing after bootcamp

So hey guys im new here and i have a problem that you might be aware of ...
I tryd to bootcamp via BC assisstant and i divided then equally coz i wanted to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
So i divided 250gb of HDD and i failed to burn my disc as a ISO. file so the mac can recognize it so i came across an error that said
"Press any key to boot" or smtg like that and pressed control and got back on MAC OS X. So i changed my mind about the windows 7 and i wanted to get my partition of HDD back ... so i went into DISK UTILITY pressed right click on the HDD and removed the portion from there ... the problem is i still dont have the GB's returned ... and i have 2 schemes MACINTOSH HD and an empty one... and i have available space of 136 GB ... i would like to get my FULL SIZE back of 500 GB's .
The real problem is after this i tryed finding my CD of snow leopard so i could reinstall or check something from there and i couldnt find it... and plus i dont have any TIME MACHINE backup . So help me if you can coz im kinda new on mac
Ty in advance boys & girls hope we fix this together.

First run the Bootcamp Assistant and try deleting the Boocamp Partition that way, mind you it may take some time before it's finished.  That's the safest way.
The other way is to open Disk Utility and click on the internal drive on the far left that underneath has your MacIntosh HD and the BOOTCAMP partitions.
It will look almost like this (I have two OS X partitions instead)
Next you want to click on the Bootcamp partition and click the little "-" button
Next you want to take the corner draggy thing of the first partition and drag it over the empty space /apply and wait.
I haven't done it in awhile so I forget the exact details, but that's how it's done.

  • Rather Urgent: Mac HD cannot be repaired. Bootcamp windows effected?

This is rather urgent, as I need the computer for the Bar Examination on Tuesday (two days away!)
Today, my MacBook Air gave a "question mark" folder on booting. I tried booting from a disk, and using Disk Utility. The Disk Repair said it cannot repair the Mac HD, advising to backup, reformat, and re-install.
I also have Bootcamp Windows 7 installed. That is currently working fine. And that is what I need for the Bar Exam. If everything stays as is, I am okay.
So my question is: Will the damaged Mac HD ruin the undamaged Bootcamp Windows? And if so, what can I do to fix this?
There's special software called ExamSoft that is required to take the Bar. Unfortunately, you can only download it once, and you have to verify the laptop when you download, so this is not something I can download after reformatting. I can not reformat the harddrive until after the exam. (They advise keeping the software on for 9 months!) But I am okay with that, I can deal with all my other computer needs afterwards, but with just two days away from a three day exam, I am very worried about my Bootcamp Windows going down, taking the exam software with it.
    Please advise!!

As you've already taken the bar exam, this reply comes too late to take care of that initial fear of losing everything.
I do have some steps that you can follow now that the stress has subsided:
    1) Get yourself a copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior (the latest is 4.1.1) -- It's worth its weight in gold
    2) Find your system CDs or 10.6 cd -- whichever is newest
    3) Get an external drive that you can format for mac
Depending on whether you mind losing the data on the Mac side of your computer or not will determine the steps you would need to go through and how much work it will take to get back up and running.
*If you don't mind losing the data on the mac side of your system:*
    1) Boot to your 10.6 cd or latest system disk
    2) When it makes it to the installation screen choose English. Then from the Utilities menu at the top choose Disk Utility.
    3) VERY IMPORTANT TO DO PROPERLY -- Choose the Macintosh HD partition (not bootcamp and NOT THE MAIN DRIVE).
    4) Select Erase tab and make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled), name can be anything you want. Click the Erase button.
    5) Quit Disk Utility and go through the 10.6 installation process as normal.
    6) Once install has finished, you can restore your data if you have it on a time machine volume or on another Mac, otherwise just set the system up fresh and install your various Apps, etc.
    7) Follow the steps below to make a backup/image of your Windows Boot Camp partition
*If you mind losing the data on the mac side, follow these steps:*
    1) Boot to the Disk Warrior CD -- (If it doesn't boot to the cd due to the system being newer, you'll have to create a Bootable hard drive for the Mac - http://www.ehow.com/how5142897make-bootable-usb-mac.html. Once you have a bootable drive you can drag copy DiskWarrior to the bootable drive from off the CD after you've temporarily booted to the external drive -- hold Option key at startup and select the external hard drive to boot to it)
    2) Attempt to repair the Mac HD partition using Disk Warrior, and if it's successful you can continue with these steps -- if it's not.. consider your mac data lost to standard recovery methods.
    3) After it repairs, restart and boot to the 10.6 or latest System cd you have.
    4) Under the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility, and check your Mac HD for problems.. since Disk Warrior cleaned up the directory structure it probably won't have errors.
    5) Walk through a standard install of 10.6
    6) Perform all updates and BACK UP YOUR STUFF!
    7) Follow the next steps below to make a backup/image of your Windows Boot Camp partition
*To back up your Windows Boot Camp Partition:*
    1) Once your system works on the Mac side again, make sure you're booted into the Mac Side.
    2) Download and install Winclone (drag to your applications folder) http://download.cnet.com/Winclone/3000-2242_4-172338.html
    3) Run Winclone and select your bootcamp partition.
    4) Plug in your external hard drive and make sure it's formatted for Mac, if it's not, use Disk Utility and choose the external drive, and choose to Erase the volume and format as Mac OS Extended. THIS WILL ERASE THE DATA ON THE DRIVE, there's no way to convert the drive to Mac Formatted from a PC format. It's not recommended to use a PC formatted disk for this, it's possible that it might work but it's not worth the risk if it doesn't.
    5) Inside Winclone, click the Image.. button, give your Bootcamp image a name such as: Bootcamp 2-25-2011
    6) Save the image onto the external drive.
To restore the image you can open Winclone, click Restore, select the disk image you saved, and then restore it to the BOOTCAMP partition. A restoration would be necessary if you were to wipe the whole drive, if you were to install a newer drive into your system, if you wanted to resize your bootcamp partition to be larger, or if you were to migrate your BOOTCAMP partition to another system.
Hope that helps you and others!

  • Full bluetooth functionality in bootcamp 5.1 but how?

Hi together! Many bluetooth features (sound, support for mobile phones etc.) seem to be missing in bootcamp 5.1 (macbook air, win7 x64). On non-apple notebooks it's often recommended to install widdcomm drivers or similar software. Tried to download the broadcomm bluetooth software but doesnt detect my bluetooth functionality in bootcamp. Any idea on how to get all the famous bluetooth features to work in bootcamp? The native windows software doesnt seem to provide everything. Use win7 x64 sp1 on macbook air with bootcamp 5.1 Best regards, Helmuth

If the Broadcom BT drivers are installed, what specific BT functions are missing? Usually Widcomm is used because the basic BT driver from MS does not support many BT profiles.

  • Trouble finding Bootcamp device

I don't really understand the difference between Macintosh HD and the bootcamp devices on my mac other than the fact that when I try to install a game I have the option to choose which drive I would want the game to be installed on. Usually I would pick the Macintosh Hd drive but I don't have enough space on it to download anything else so I switched to the Bootcamp device. I continued to install my games through bootcamp successfully but then when I log back on to my computer to install another game bootcamp disappeared. I've tried looking for it but it's no where. Hope this makes sense. I'm not the best at computers and I'm at a complete loss of what to do.

well, i go into east set up and use one of the DV converter settings but no luck. how do i manually record into final cut. or a link to a tutorial would be great as well. thanks!
