Macintosh HD not bootable after attempting to intstall Linux on Flash drive

I made a working Ubuntu Live CD, and ran it on startup. I selected install, and installed it on the flash drive, or so I thought. I can't boot up from the flash drive, and the hard drive is no longer recognized as bootable. I tried plugging the flash drive into another computer, and it is "Not Formatted" This means that the install didn't go well. I booted up on my Mac from the Snow Leopard install disk because the hard drive didn't work. I repaired the disk in Disk Utility, but to no avail. I attempted to install Snow Leopard on the hard drive, and it went through the whole process and took an hour, but I still couldn't boot up from the Hard Drive. In Disk Utility I see that my files are still on the Hard Drive, and it isn't blank. I went to Terminal and navigated to my files, so I know they are still on there. I know I can always format and reinstall OSX, but I want to keep my files. How can I do this?

I do have a 1 month old backup, but also on that hard drive are other files I want to keep.
if the external is big enough you can split it into two volumes using disk utility retaining the data on the first partition and clone the internal to the new empty partition. other than this you need to get another drive.
to see how to split a volume in two non destructively enter "create new volumes" in disk utility Help".
I don't want to have to reinstall all of my applications and reset my preferences over again.

  • Finder stall after wake from sleep w/USB flash drive mounted

Has anyone else experienced this? iMac works flawlessly while USB flash drive is mounted UNTIL iMac sleeps. Then as soon as the iMac wakes from sleep the finder is non-responsive (perpetually spinning beach ball) and other apps slow to a crawl and become non-responsive as well if they need the finder (i.e. to save, etc.). This only happens when the USB flash drive is mounted.
Trying to force quit (relaunch) the Finder does not work, I always have to perform a hard restart.
I have an external FireWire hard drive that works beautifully and does not cause these same symptoms.
    Any ideas?

umm.. don't let the computer go to sleep with your jump drive connected? The mac will usually take a few seconds to get his gear together after waking up from a sleep sounds like he is having to gather additional things since the jump drive is in there. I don't have a REAL solution except don't let Mr. Mac sleep with the jump inserted....

  • IMac disk utility not reading any FAT32/NTFS related partitions/CD/flash drives

    Hi everyone!
I'm trying to access my drives and later on install bootcamp and windows on my iMac. At moment I can only start the iMac in safe mode (long story, if interested check out iMac 27" (late 2009), freezing - List of solutions tried). Any steps taken so far to read and format other drives has been in Safe Mode.
    Problems:
    - any formats except Mac OS X extended gets greyed out in Disk Utility.
    - Not able to read/mount flash drives, external drives or CD's with any other formats.
    Solutions tried:
    - Tried to format using OSX on current iMac, MBP and PC and no change or luck.
    - Tried on other machines and it works great. So it's related to my iMac.
    - Disk Utility try to Mount drive/partition - getting error "The disk "BOOTCAMP" could not be mounted"
    - Installed Paragon NTFS but no difference.
    - Disk Utility no disk error reported
Searched on internet and forums for a solution w/o any luck. Haven't found anyone with similar problems or I'm using wrong keywords. Haven't found any Knowledge Base about other formats is disabled in Safe Mode state so it can't be that either. Below is a picture that shows any other partitions than mac is greyed out.
Any suggestions or anyone encounter with this wierd behavior?

Why do the titles under my photos in iphoto not go with the pictures when I send them to a flash drive?  Is it not supposed to ot am I doing something wrong?  It does it just fine with windows: I am new with Apple.

If you want the title to be the new file name export with the option to use the title as the new file name see highlight to far left:
If you want the title to be inluded with the file so another photo application can read that title like iPhoto would use the option to include Title and Keywords. But this method will require an applicaiton that can read the iPTC fields that will contain the title.

  • External hard drive is not recognized after attempt to format

I just got a new macbook and couldn't use my external hard drive because it was formatted on a PC and only allowed me to read the data. I backed up the data on the 250gb hd and then used Disk Utility to erase the hd and format it as "Mac OS extended (journaled)." After beginning, Disk Utility stopped working and showed up as "not responding" in the Activity Monitor.
Now the hd does not show up on the desktop and can only be seen in Disk Utility. If I try to erase again or partition the hd the utility stops responding. If I try to zero out the drive it continues to say "preparing to zero" indefinately. Now the hd is also not recognized by windows except in the windows disk utility, but it does not even give the option of formatting/initializing it, so that is not an option.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any idea of something that I haven't tried yet. I really want to get the drive working and have exhausted all the ideas I can come up with. The internet has not provided too many ideas either.
Thanks so much for your help.
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have crazy solution to format it to FAT 32, it work a couple times on my several MAxtor, and Western Digital HD. But this is the last resort and if you are not handy and familiar, don't do it.
It happen on my external HD, so I crack the enclosure open, pulled the HD out and attached it as internal HD on a PC after adjusting the jumper to master and make sure no other HD attached to the motherboard. Make sure the motherboard detected (you can see it from bios menu).
Insert a bootable installer disk before XP ('98, ME, or 2000), and start from there until a promt comes, and type fdisk and you delete the old partition and create a new partition and restart once using the disk still and format it using FAT 32.
After that you put it back to the enclosure, and mount it to MacBook as a new HD with default factory format.
If you don't have the installer disk, this might help :
    http://www.bootdisk.com/
But if your maxtor still under warranty better talk to them first and they might willing to reformat it for you.
Hope this help your external back and let you use it on your MacBook.

  • 2nd drive unformatted and not restored after attempting restore from a system image

I created a system image, which included drive C (where Windows is installed) and drive G (where some installed Windows programs are located).  I then ran into a situation where I wanted to restore from the system image.  With my first attempt,
this process took several days.  When I returned home from work, my computer had booted up into Windows -- drive C had successfully been restored.  I soon found out though that drive G was in an unformatted state.
Now, given the time it took for each drive to restore and the sizes of data for each drive (160gb for C and 1000gb for G), it seemed odd to me that the entire process had completed already, given the time that had passed and the progress indicated for drive
G in the status bar, in the morning before I went to work.  It is entirely possible that one of my cats may have jumped on my desk and somehow cancelled the operation.
    My questions are:
    1. if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, will the 1st disk (C) still be successfully restored?
    2. why does this process take so long?
    3. if there is some other error, is it displayed?  Does system restore automatically reboot after completion/cancellation?  Is there an error file created somewhere if there was an error, or perhaps something mentioned in a log file?  If so,
    where?
    4. has anyone encountered a similar issue before and can provide any insight?
    5. anything else I'm missing?
I'm attempting to restore a second time, and it is not even halfway through drive C, so it might not be until the end of the week before the entire process completes.  To be safe, especially from nosey cats, I disabled the mouse and keyboard so no input
can interrupt and accidentally cancel the process.
    thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
For the first problem, if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, the 1st disk (C) can be successfully restored.
For the second problem, I think it is normal to take a long time to finish the process, it is depend on the size of the date.
For the third problem, you may check the setup log files to find the clue of the cause.

  • IMac not working after attempting to install windows via bootcamp, what do?

So I tried installing windows into my iMac OS X via Bootcamp. I followed the instructions from the tutorial video; however, I may have used the wrong disk. I used iWork to partition so I can get windows running, the results of this attempt was a black screen with white text saying "no bootable drive -- insert a boot disk and press any key" I cannot eject the disc at all, none of the keys on the wired keyboard responds, nor does the wired mouse I use. I need to get rid of this and go back to using the previous operating system. The only button on my computer that does work atm is just the power button. What is a solution to solve this?
Also, I did not download anything from the internet (i.e. download windows 7) to get to where I was trying to go, so I'm sure a virus did not cause this. How do I eject the disc from the computer if I cannot eject the disc using the eject key on the keyboard since the keyboard does not respond...

    Hello Erick419
Try starting up the computer and holding the option key. From there you should get something similar to the image below. Then you can choose your Mac Startup Disk and also should be able to hit the eject button to get the disk out.

  • Boot Camp partition not bootable after update

    Hi All, hi Loner T!
After an OSX update I lost my Boot Camp partition. Reading you replies here on the forum, i was able to save my important files through testdisk, for what i'm really thankful! Following your instructions in this thread (Bootcamp disk0s4 gone after Yosemite update) the bootcamp partition finally appeared in finder and disk utility.
But sudo gdisk /dev/disk0 returns with this:
    Kovacs-Peter-Attilas-MacBook-Pro:~ kovacspeterattila$ Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    Password:
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.0
Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their
    partition table automatically reloaded!
    Partition table scan:
      MBR: protective
      BSD: not present
      APM: not present
      GPT: present
Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
    Command (? for help):
So if it is able i would avoid reinstalling windows, and all the applications with your help. I saw many people asking you about this case, so i hope you may can help me as well.
    Thank you!

  • Windows 7 not bootable after upgrade

    Hello All,
I have just upgraded to Maverick OS X 10.9 (13A603). Now as many of the others I am unable to boot into my Windows 7.
The partition is NOT LOST. I can still see the partions and the files in the Windows HD just cannot boot with it.
I guess it can be easily fixed using gdisk for experts.

    Please help.
    Thanks alot

I think my problem is that my Windows HD partition is not marked as Bootable.
In the gdisk i see this in the recovery option
    Recovery/transformation command (? for help): o
Disk size is 236978176 sectors (113.0 GiB)
    MBR disk identifier: 0x1D94FD6E
    MBR partitions:
Number  Boot  Start Sector   End Sector   Status      Code
       1                     1       409639   primary     0xEE
       2                409640     69313807   primary     0xAF
       3              70584320    138399743   primary     0x07
       4             138399744    236976127   primary     0x07
No partition is marked as bootable.
Learning from Christopher's learnings, may be i just need to create a new empty GUID partition table in gdisk by pressing o
Add new partitions (by pressing n) EFI (dont know what it is for), Macintosh HD, Windows HD and Recovery HD into it and make Windows HD bootable.
    Am I correct ?
Another issue that can be is that my two drives have completely same GUID.
    Is this ok?
May be it is causing issue.

  • Libc.so.6 GLIBC_2.16 not found after attempting to upgrade pacman

Ok so I followed the thread (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=95007&p=1) as best I could and ended with this error:

I have found this thread on the problem but so far I have had no luck resolving the issues

I have attempted to use the current version of curl, and curl7.26.0-1
also the pacman -Syu --ignore glibc, curl has not worked.
I am fairly new to Arch linux but am reasonably competent with computers. I have unfortunately inherited the computer and would really like to get it working again.
    Thanks for the help!

Walk us through. When and how did you install Arch and when was the last time you did upgrade? I've got hard time to understand you haven't done upgrade since july.
PS What was your previous distro? (I don't want to brag, just tell you some differences between Arch and other "easy" distros)
Ok as I said i unfortunately inherited the computer, so I was not the one to go through the install of Arch.
I have been using the computer without upgrading, but I would really like to get the computer working properly.
The last upgrade was probably performed around a year ago. Please let me know any other specific information that would be useful.

  • Iphone not charging after attempt to upgrade to 3.1.3

I tried unsuccessfully yesterday (2nd time) to upgrade to the latest software version 3.1.3. The upgrade failed, and I believe error code was 16. Now, my IPhone has low battery, itunes won't recognize it, and when I turn iphone on, a picture describing connecting the usb to Itunes appears.
    Please help.

While it does not mention error code 16 specifically, this KB article talks about failed update attempts and how to correct them. See if this helps you.

  • Firefox will not open after attempting to upgrade to v5, sys restore didn't help

Was running 3.6 with no problems, but trying to upgrade today apparently broke it. The upgrade failed for some reason (the old .exe is still the only one in the Firefox folder & I can't find any files newer than April 2010 in there), but no matter how I try to run it, nothing happens - Firefox will not open, period. I tried reverting to last week with sys restore, scanning for malware with Malwarebytes, but still nothing happens. I'm using WinXP 5.1 media edition SP2 (yes, it's been around a few years but it works for me). I'm now using Chrome which seems to run just fine, tho I miss all my plugins.

    Hi lwhealon
try from Start > Run > and type to check 1 of :
    firefox -safe-mode
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode '''or'''
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
(to enable the Run box in win 7 see: [http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2006/09/18/windows-vista-secret-3-bringing-back-start-run.aspx enable Run box win 7] )
also check if [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls Firewall] or/and other security software blocking firefox start (like ad-blocker, web-accelerator etc).
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application With Firefox completely closed] (probably because you can not start it), open the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory application folder] (by default, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox on Windows) rename firefox.exe to firefox1.exe, then double-click firefox1.exe. If Firefox runs without problems, it could indicate that your firewall is blocking Firefox.
    good luck

  • ADE not start after attempt to open application

Hi, hope someone can help me with this issue, I try to open ADE application and every time just get a white blank screen even though I had reinstalled it again. Its works 2 wks ago.

    thank you all.
since posting i have looked through a number of threads on the site and got some idea of how the fsb should be setup.
to cure my own problem i ran chkdsk via WXP Pro repair and that allowed me to open windows again.
went into bios and upped the fsb to 166mhz and set the multiplier @ 11.5 (i am running an athlon xp 2600+)
the system had previously been set @ 100mhz x 11.5 i seem to have increased the speed of my PC by about 70%
if not for this problem and the research to put it right i would never have known anything was wrong!
thanks for your tips on CoreCenter - will use for monitoring temperature only from now on

  • IMovie Project Not Opening After Attempts to Zip File

    Hi all,
I am trying to clear some space from my external hard drive, and I have an iMovie project that is approximately 8 GB of space. I would like to back up the entire project file itself in case I need to edit it in the future, but I can't do that since it is larger than the ~4.4 GB size DVD-R discs. My idea was to create a zip file, and then split the zip file into smaller parts using the program Split & Concat.
I created a zip file of the project, and it appeared to work. I unzipped the file in a new directory (on my desktop, as opposed to the LaCie drive), and the file appeared to extract with no problems.
However, when I attempted to open it in iMovie, nothing happened. It was as if I hadn't done anything. I then tried to open the original project (on my LaCie drive), and encountered the same problem. The file size is still listed as just under 8 GB in both cases, and I have no idea what the problem could be.
My second iMovie project file on my LaCie (in the same directory as the file in question) opens just fine. Any thoughts? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

If you click the Project Library in the upper left corner, it should go to Edit Project. There you should find it.
You said it was in your Projects folder. Check to see if your clips are in the Events folder. Hopefully, nothing was deleted.
