Macintosh mount server via SMB

Testing out mounting NW 6.5 SP8 server from a macintish using SMB versus AFP.. I can successfully mount the server via AFP and also with SMB. When I mount the server via AFP the mounted server shows the complete server name appended with the volume name ie (testserver.vol1).. if I mount the same server and volume via SMB is simply mounts as VOL1 (no server name)..
If i use Imanager and change the CIFS properties of the server to add shares for the volumes (ie add testserver.vol1) and then restart cifs, I cannot log into the server anymore (it reports back that a unexpected error has occurred - error code -50)..If I delete the added shared and let the server simply report the default names, and then re-start CIFS, I can again login to the server
anyone have any ideas ??
Thanks in advance
Doug

Are you trying to make the CIFS (SMB) mount appear in the same format as
the AFP mount?
If so then you can't but you can make the the AFP mount appear the same
as CIFS by setting the Shared Volume Name in iManager or editing
/etc/opt/novell/afptcpd/afpvols.conf.
Finally please note there is a dedicated support forum covering CIFS and
AFP @

  • Connection to Windows 2008 Server via SMB hangs after standby

After boot or reboot, I can easily "connect to server" in finder to the Windows Server 2008 machine via smb://hostname. The network and shares work good without connection drops.
However, when my Macbook resumes from standby or hibernation, the mounts do not reconnect, and the connected server in finder keeps reconnecting until the connecting failed message appears. When trying to unmount the smb server, finder hangs from time to time. When trying to reconnect via "connect to server" using either IP address or hostname, the connecting window with the moving bar appears, but never succeeds. The only option is to reboot the machine to be able to reconnect to the windows server and mount some shares.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks!

I've been having exactly the same issue on my iMac-- very frustrating. I'm not aware of a permanent cure yet, but on my system I usually can avoid a full reboot by turning my Airport/wireless on for a few seconds, and then off again. The Windows shares become visible again after doing so. (My normal state is wired network only, with Airport off.)

  • ITunes media on Linux server via SMB - slow imports, changes and stalls

I have an unRAID server (lime-technology.com) which is a Linux based server. I'm getting terrible performance with iTunes. The music playback is fine. But if I import a song file or change any metadata, it has problems. This isn't new, I've read many, many posts complaining about this and other problems concerning SMB shares and file systems. But I think I may be onto something and would like some advice.
This is what I've found so far. Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, has a problem with SMB and/or any file system other than HFS+. HFS+ is the common files system for OS X.
There are hundreds of posts on the web complaining about temporary freezes, slowdowns, sometimes crashes with SMB shares and other file systems. I have yet to see Apple acknowledge that there is a problem, but there are a few suggestions out there that seem to have helped people. I'll be trying out some of these this week and post the results here.
From my own observations, specifically with iTunes, I've noticed some strange behavior. Here's my setup. I have an iMac running 10.6.4 (the latest update), the latest iTunes 10. The iTunes app is located on the local internal HD, I have my iTunes library files and all my media on disk 1 of my unRAID server. I'm hard wired to the server via a gigabit router. I have iTunes set to keep the media organized and copy the media files to the server.
When importing a song file into iTunes, the file initially seems to copy at a good rate, the file appears in it's proper place and you can see the size increasing as it copies. Then it stalls for a while, then the name changes to a long hex number for a few seconds and then reverts back to its' normal state. The process can take 30-40 seconds, even with a small song file. I looked at the console and I got the following error message:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:24:28 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Rock 'N' Roll,(null))+
The same thing happens when I make a change in the metadata. For example, I added onto the name of an album and for each song it changed I got:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:37:36 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Signature Box Set 5 - Walls And Bridges,(null))+
This happens for each file imported or changed even within iTunes.
I followed the first path in the error message: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820].
In the /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/ folder I find the following files:
    iTunes
    libgnsdk_musicid.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_sdkmanager.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_submit.1.7.1.dylib
where iTunes is a Unix Executable File.
I did some more research and have found some posts about file systems other than HFS+ having trouble with app packages. I believe that all OS X apps are actually packages, like folders, but appearing as a single file. Other file systems don't seem to know what to do with these. There was some talk of "flattening" these app packages, but I haven't gone forward with that yet because I'm not sure I understand it enough yet.
I've also noticed that in the getinfo box under sharing & permissions I usually get "You can read and write", but with apps I get "You have custom access". This was something i had noticed before and thought it was a problem on the server, but I didn't realize it until now, I'm getting the custom access on every app. So I think that's probably normal.
I'm wondering if I'm having a permissions problem with the iTunes Unix Executable File. Right now the permissions are set as follows:
    system: Read & Write
    admin: Read & Write
    everyone: Read only
Maybe it's trying to write to that file or another one and doesn't have the right permissions since the song file is now on the server and that's causing the stalls? I'm over my head here. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem with Excel files on an external drive. The drive is attached to my computer which is on a network and another user accesses the external drive. The problem of "custom access" began after our main server went down. I hope someone can come up with a solution so that I can set the permissions. For now the Excel files are all read only.

  • When connecting to file server via smb shows no space available! Help!

We are running an XSERVE with Mac OS X 10.5.5 and have multiple clients that connect to it (mac and windows).
For some reason yesterday one of the clients (10.4.11) when connects to the file share using the smb protocol shows up with 0kb available and he is not able to copy any files. Every other computer shows 4TB available. When I connect to the share on his machine using my credentials I get the same problem. However, when I connect using his credentials on my machine it shows up correctly with 4TB free. Also, when he connects via AFP it shows the full 4TB. Any idea what could be causing this?
(the reason he connects via smb is because for some reason the people on 10.4.11 experience very slow AFP transfers sometimes. If anybody knows whats causing this that would help too hehe) Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to help me.

If it is an identical machine, put the machine that works fine into target disk mode and boot the machine that is having issues from the other machines drive. That will eliminate most hardware issues.
My guess is it is a system file or a settings file in the users library. I have fixed several issues like this on computers that were running 10.4 I believe and think they were upgraded from 10.3 by someone else. The issue had something to do with permissions and files.
    Try some of the following:
    - create a new user on the computer and see if that user works. if so, it's something in the user folder (most likely User/username/Library/). If not, then it is something outside the user folder.
    Try
    - running a combo Update on the machine
    - run disk utility file and permissions on the drive
    - Backup the user folder and clone the drive that works onto this drive, and move the user folder over. (assuming you know how to do that, it is easy)
REGARDING Slow AFP - having the same issue with 10.4.11 Server. Most clients are Leopard. Intermittent, so hard to diagnose. Tried several solutions on this wait and see issue.

  • Connection to server via smb not working

    hi,
i have an old G4 iBook 10.3.9 that i'm using for school. to connect to our school server for course material, we were given smb log-in instructions from our it dept. when i put in the ip address, i get a prompt for the id and password, but i cannot get access. we tried logging on with my professor's macbook pro (10.5) and it worked flawlessly.
i've done all software updates and rechecked the procedure dozens of times, but i can't figure out why it's not working. if anyone has an idea, i'm all ears.
    thanks,

created in my UTF-8 Mysql DB your table and inserted a record; the select shows:
    SQL> select * from "movieclass"@mysql;
    idClass
    ClassName
    123
    H e l l o
As you can see the content is there, the "space" between the letters is related to unicode. Each character is interpreted by 2 bytes and SQL*Plus wrongly displays both. Using iSQLPLus or SQLDeveloper does not show the "space" between the letters.
    Here the data type mapping:
    SQL> desc "movieclass"@mysql;
    Name Null? Type
    idClass NUMBER(3)
    ClassName NOT NULL NVARCHAR2(50)

  • Connect to Server via SMB does not work under 10.5

Hi- I have a feeling that my account has to be reset server-side, but I'd enjoy some feedback. I still use a dual (1gHz) Quicksilver G4 which is solid as a rock and still adequate to my needs. Apart from an overall seeming sluggishness, I have a very serious problem: I am one of 7 Macs on a much larger Windows network and connecting to the various servers and directly to my Windows desktop using SMB has always worked great. Up until yesterday. After upgrading to 10.5 from 10.4.10, I couldn't get on to any of the servers, I checked the network setting and noted that they reverted to AFP. I enabled SMB and still can't get onto any of our network servers. I am, however, able to get into the Mac Public\Drop Box from the WIndows computer, but not vice-versa. I have already verified and repaired permissions, etc. Solutions, suggestions? Patch forthcoming?

Same problem with my Nokia 6650d, also after Ovi upgrade. Any hints?

  • Connect to 10.7 server via SMB

So I am testing out 10.7 server on my home network and all is working great except my media extenders (popcorn hour) can't connect to my server anymore because of apple's new rpelcaement to SMB.  They don't even see it on the network.  SO, is there any way to get install or get SMB working again on 10.7 server?  I have this new mac mini I would love to use, but it only runns 10.7, I can't go down to 10.6.8
Thanks For any help you might have,

As far as I can tell it was dodgy replicas, have changed all remote servers to a "Connected To" OD setup.
My OD is still screwed though

  • Files locked when Windows clients are connected to ML Server via smb

    Hi,
I've got a problem with windows 7 clients that are connected to my MacMini Server.
When they open files on a shared folder, and modify them, files are locked when they try to save them.
I think it might be the op-lock option present in older versions of Mac OS X Server that can be involved, but it disapeared in Lion and older version of OS X Server.
Does someone knows how to activate/deactivate this option, or does someone already got this problem?
    Server is a MacMini with 10.8.5 + Server 2.2.2
    Clients are Windows 7
Thank a lot for your answers
    Bertrand.

Officially, Adobe does not support opening or saving files to a server --- because so many different things can go wrong with networking.
The permissions error means that the file/directory permissions are incorrect on the file server, or that the OS or server is incorrectly reporting file/directory permissions.
Photoshop does more error checking than most applications, because we have seen so many problems in the past, and don't like applications silently losing or damaging files (which we see in other applications).

  • Font files corrupted via smb Win 2003 Storage Server

Files are accessed on a Windows 2003 Storage Server via smb.
I just received a "re-furbished" 27" iMac with Mac OS 10.8.2 installed. Any and all folders on the network containing Postscript font files show those files as grayed out. It appears to be limited to just Postscript fonts, NOT Truetype (.tt) or OpenType (.otf) fonts. It appears something is not recognizing the resource fork portion of the files (is it because they have no file extension?).
All other Macs on the network running older versions of the OS do NOT have a problem accessing Postscript Font files.
I'm just an end user looking for information I can pass along to our Network IT folks who apparently have limited Mac knowledge.
Any and all advice and/or technical resources would be greatly appreciated.

I do greatly appreciate the info in the "Font Management in OS X" article, but this does not begin to address the problem I tried to describe above.
The fonts in question reside in job folders on a network, running Windows Storage Server 2003 software and Mac users access those files via smb.
As needed, those fonts are copied from the network location to the application's font folder or to a local hard drive for loading via Suitcase Fusion. The activation of these fonts is NOT the problem. The font files, (specifically Postscript Font files), are marked as corrupted BEFORE they can be copied and activated.
This issue came about ONLY after I connected my new 27" iMac running OS 10.8.2 to the server. All other Mac users running older versions of the Mac OS did not have any issues, until the new Mac was thrown in the mix. Something in the Mac OS 10.8.2 or on the server is not recognizing the resource fork portion of the Postscript font files.
Once the folders containing Postscript fonts have been accessed by the Mac running OS 10.8.2, those fonts are then "corrupted," meaning any other users can no longer load those fonts as needed, because they are grayed out.
To underscore the significance of this issue, please understand that this is a prepress production workstation. The iMac was added because we could not install Adobe's CS6 Suite on existing hardware. Because of these issues, I can only use the new Mac to open InDesign CS5.5 and/or CS6 source files provided by customers, I then export an .idml file and work the job on my older "stable" Mac running Adobe's CS5 Suite.
So I hope you can come to understand that access to the exact versions of fonts used to create print production files is critical. Any substitution of fonts results in countless additional hours spent verifying that text wraps match previously printed samples exactly.
Few things are more frustrating than not having confidence in the integrity of files stored on one's own network. This is compounded by the fact that the "IT" function was outsourced to our company's headquarter's (offsite) years ago where the "IT" people seem to have minimal high-end knowledge of Macs.
Any other OS 10.8.2 users out there having this particular problem? Any other ideas?

  • Mounting NAS server using SMB

    Hi
Im new on this forum and need a bit of help with my Mac Mini running OS X 10.5.
I have recently built a NAS unit, and I can mount it using SMB in Finder. But I have to do this everytime I turn the mac on, it does not do this automatically.
Is there a way for this to happen automatically?
    Any help very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi
Yes. It's best if you use its IP address via the Go Menu > Connect to Server > smb://IPaddress. Once mounted on the desktop define it as a Login item. System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Assuming you never switch the NAS box off then every time you boot your workstation the share will present itself on the desktop. To make this seamless get keychain manager to remember your password assuming you're using one. If you're not using one use keychain manager regardless as this will work also

    hey anyone,
on several macs at a client all running Mavericks 10.9.5. everything was working smooth.

anyone have any similar issues and a way to get the finder from crashing?

I'm getting the same error messages when trying to connect over a VPN to a Mountain Lion server, from a Yosemite (10.10.2) iMac. The same Yosemite iMac at the same time has no trouble connecting to a Snow Leopard server on the same network.
By the way, there is no such thing as a "G5 (Intel) Mac". What you have is a Mac Pro tower. The G5 processors predated Intel. A lot of people tend to use "G5" as a generic term for a Mac aluminum tower. Why does it matter? Because if you not had not said "Intel", you would be getting replies having to do with the age of the computer in question.

  • Can't Connect to OS X Server 10.6.4 using AFP - but can via SMB

OK, I'm stumped. This is a brand new Mini server running OS X Server 10.6.4. I can connect from 10.5 and 10.6 clients using SMB but not AFP. Access to all services is set to 'Allowed' so it's not a service restriction.
Server has good DNS resolution for itself. This happened using OD and then I demoted it to Standalone to see if that would make any difference. None. Rebooted several times.
The AFP logs show this when a user tries to connect:
    IP 192.168.111.4 - - [29/Jul/2010:22:24:28 -0500] "Login adam" 0 0 0
    IP 192.168.111.4 - - [29/Jul/2010:22:24:30 -0500] "Logout adam" 0 0 0
But on the client side you get a dialog "There was an error connecting to the server. Check your connections and try again."
Possibly related to this, not all folders show up in the share when connected via SMB. All folders are there when viewed on the server though. Have forced share permissions down the tree several times. Reboots. Nada.
Thoughts? Never seen this happen before in many years of OS X Server work.

I have exactly the same issue --
    Have an Xserve running 10.6.4
    File Sharing is setup.
Can access files using SMB but not AFP --from Mac OS X 10.5.8
Can access perfectly from Windows 7.
