Macintosh SE Issues

Hey everyone, I was given a Macintosh SE that worked from a friend in another state as a gift, and i of course had to have it shipped from my friend to me. Well I know my friend wouldn't lie about the computer working when it didn't, so what could have broken during shipping? Before shipping it worked fine, but now I can't figure out what is the matter.
When I flip the power switch, I hear the little ding sound you hear everytime you boot it up, the fan kicks in, and I hear the hard drive make some sounds, I can't really describe it but I made a recording of it if its possible to post to the Apple Support Communities. There is nothing on the screen at all, not even a flicker when I try to boot. Every time the hard drive makes noise the little amber coloured light on the front lights up and turns back off when the drive stops making noise. Do I need a new hard drive? And is there anyway to test whether or not the screen works before I swap out the hard drives? I just want to be sure the monitor is not broken before I spend money to fix it. Thanks for your help.
And one more question: Does anyone know what this is?

Hi,
First of all, it would probably be correct to assume that you have tried changing the brightness (wheel under the screen).
The 9-pin connector is obviously not standard here (and the placement of the cable does not appear to be safe). Connectors like these were often used together with serial ports, but a different use cannot be ruled out (since there are two round MiniDIN-8 serial ports already).
BTW, the following pages could may be of interest.

Also, a weak internal (logic board) battery could possibly affect the display.

  • Macintosh User Issues

During a recent test MAC users identified the following issues:
Required signatures, dates, text ended up on the signed result in the wrong location
Some required entries did not appear anywhere on the signed result.
Initials were displaced upwards on a list.  This is unacceptable.  On a legal document it would void the entire effort.
One MAC user could not access the document at all.  He was using MAC OS 10.9.5 and is an Adobe professional, well versed in the use of Acrobat.

    Hi David,
As I can see that you have an existing zendesk ticket which was closed yesterday.
Please let me know in case you have any more queries and we will help you.

  • IMovie no longer recognizes Canon XL2 firewire

OK, I don't know if anyone else is having this issue. I have rented several Canon XL1 / XL1s / XL2 in the past, and was < easily > able to import the miniDV footage into iMovie. However, with the latest operating system and my G5, iMovie HD 6 does not recognize there is a camera attached via FireWire (4-pin to 6-pin). At first I thought it was the cable, or the camera, but it will connect to a Dell laptop via the 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable (but that doesn't help me because then it imports the video in AVI -- yuckkkk). Any suggestions. Canon's website says the camera is compatible and there are no drivers to download. Thanks.

    Hi Graphic Designer:
Canon cameras don't do well if they are daisy-chained. Maybe that's it? Read here:

  • Canon GL-2 compatability with I Movie?

Hi. I am looking into the Canon GL-2 for use with imovie and FCE. Does anyone have experience with this? Any advice would be great. I am filming sit down interviews in people's homes.

    Hi SJ:
Being Karsten's personal translator, please let me be of assistance...;))
First, "beats of a camera"...yes-that's a good thing.
Secondly, the daisy chain thing has to do with an older Apple Article that warned against it in conjunction with certain Canon models:
Macintosh: FireWire Issue With Some Canon Mini-DV Cameras
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61603
Not necessarily going to affect you-he was just touching all bases.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can I change whfdhtml.htm WebHelp file inside RH Project?

We have a Macintosh display issue with our Search pane. After researching it we found it is because the whfdhtml.htm file contains an if statement that sets the frameset at 85% for Macs.
When I change it to 100% it displays correctly.
Question: Can I make this a permanent change in the RoboHelp project somehow? I looked but can't find a place to do it. Maybe a snippet or something??
When I generate WebHelp, the file is replaced. We republish all when we generate final builds for various reasons. We don't want to have to change this manually each time we release.
Using Tech Comm v2, skin Chrisi with full text search, RH 8.
Screen shot of value I need to change is attached.
    Thanks,
    Rita Norris
    Technical Writer

    Hi,
You can overwrite the RoboHelp source files. RoboHelp uses these files to create the output. Always backup the original files though.
    Whfdhtml.htm is located in the directory's <Installation directory>\RoboHELP\WebHelp5Ext\template_defaultskin and <Installation direcotory>\RoboHTML\WebHelp5Ext\template_defaultskin.
You must replace the source files on every computer you use to generate your layout.

  • My Final Cut Pro keeps crashing and restarting the computer what could be the problem?

My computer keeps crashing and then restarting whenever I try to use my Final Cut Pro X.  I have an iMac with OSX 10.9.2 and 12GB of memory
there is an ATI Radeon Hd 5750 1024 MB Graphics Card, I just don't understand why things are not working at all.
What can I do to ensure everything is compatible and there is nothing I am missing.

Whatever the cause, please return to this forum and tell us what you did or had done to get your system working again.
There is no direct connection between FCPX and restarting the Macintosh that I am aware of. You haven't said if you can actually launch FCPX and then something initiates a restart. And you haven't said what error you see, if any. Nor have you actually said if FCPX has ever worked on that machine. Vital information.
If you search this FCPX forum, you will see that other users who have had restarting issues have not reported back to tell us about their solutions. ON other Apple forums, perhaps those related to your specific hardware and version of Mavericks, you will find several obscure and seemingly unrelated restart issues.
I have not had andy Macintosh restart issues for many, many years. My experience with Macs is that restarts are almost always hardware-based, usually incompatibility with some weird third party rig like a USB repeater, firewire adapter, cereal box keyboard, cheap monitor, ancient card reader, or even an oddball sound system. Start by disconnecting everything.
Hope you get it figured out.

  • Lion OS X keeps crashing and restarting my computer

I have a 15" Mac Book Pro with 4 GB ram and a 2.66 GHz processor. Occasionally when i'm not plugged into a power source, my mac shuts down in the middle of work, whether it's light browsing or if I have a lot of programs running at once, and when I set it to sleep it shuts down as well. What is making this happen? I never had any hiccups in Snow Leopard so I doubt it's a hardware issue.

Whatever the cause, please return to this forum and tell us what you did or had done to get your system working again.

  • Buying the right video camera

    Hello everyone,
I work for a community centre in Montréal and we are looking for a video camera that would be fully compatible with our new iMac and iMovie.
We are basically filming kids participating in activities and then editing the footage.
From what I have been reading so far, it seems a camera which records images on a tape would be the best. We have a small JVC camera which records images on a hard drive and importing the images in iMovie is a bit complicated...
Would you have a suggestion for a small video camera ?
    Thank you !
    And Happy day !
    Mathieu

iMovie runs on QuickTime. QuickTime 'sees'the timecode on your video. When it stops, QuickTime stops.
So, this sounds like a timecode prolem that is happening when you import.
Perhaps simply geting rid of the imovie perference files will help.
    Close Imovie.
Then locate a file named com.apple.imovie.plist and get rid of it. Then empty the trash, run a permissions repair with disk utility and restart. That should do it. The files you need to delete are found in:
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Also, Canon cameras don't always play nice with imovie. Especially if the camera is daisy-chained thru another firewire device. Having said this, I think I'd try a shorter Firewire cable.

  • Imovie HD with Canon ZR60

My Canon ZR 60 was recognized by Ilife 03 just fine before I upgraded to Ilife06. After upgrading to Ilife 5 six months ago I cannot import new video into imovie. I tried most of the tricks I read in this forum, but nothing worked. I read many Apple Support Doc's- Nothing - Tried the imovie help area - nothing, bought a new cord-nothing. So I am at a loss.
    Please help?

  • ImovieHD 6.03  does not see popular Canon GL2  cam but earlier imovie does

I have found that my Canon GL2 camcorder is not recognized and will not import into iMovie HD. I changed the setting to standard definition, 640 x 480, but it does not work. It works with earlier versions of iMovie. The Canon GL2 cam is a popular cam so I do not understand what is wrong. I have checked the pulldown menu by the camera on the control screen but the only cam it "sees" is the the isight so I can not switch it to the GL2. I have a lot of old movies I want to digitize and I would prefer to do it on my new mac rather than my old mac.

There are a few Canon issues that have been addressed:

  • IMovie not compatible with Canon HV20?

Can't get my iMac to recognize my HV20. Anybody else have one and able to explain if I'm missing something? Got a firewire cable, plugged it into the HDV/DV port on the camera, turned it to "play" and I'm getting nothing. On the camera, no matter if I set the output to DV or HDV/DV, the mac doesn't see it.
Canon's website says I shouldn't need anything for OS X support.
About to head upstairs to my windows box to see if it'll see it.
Any suggestions? I'd much rather use the mac for vid capture than my windows computer.

... it certainly makes me wonder about your compute setup. Do you have any other Firewire devices connected to your computer when you are trying to make the video transfer? I know some earlier Canon DV camcorders wanted to be the only Firewire device on the bus during transfer.

  • Camcorder does not connect

I feel like there has to be such a simple answer to this question...
I'm connecting my Canon Optura 20 (firewire) to my newer iMac, but iMovie (nor Final Cut, for that matter) simply will not recognize it. If I have the camcorder on and plugged in when I open the apps, I just get the spinning wheel of death until I turn off the camcorder -- then they open just fine.
iMovie simply wants me to record using iSight.
BUT I can take the camcorder over to my laptop (iBook G4) using the last version of iMovie HD (from iLife 05) and it works just fine.
    Little help?

    Hi Daniel:
    Welcome to discussions!
If you click on the little camera icon side of the camera/editing switch you should see a little drop down menu of available cameras. See if you can choose your DV camera instead of iSight.
If that didn't he;p, try looking here:

  • Canon ZR45 not detected

I have a Canon zr45 mc camcorder and an iMac Power PC G4 flatscreen. The G4 has been updated to Mac OS X 4.9 and iMovie HD 5. Before the upgrades, I was able to import the video from my camera into iMovie. Now my computer and/or iMovie don't see my camcorder.
I've tried all the support suggestions including turing on Garage Band and playing a few notes and then going back to iMovie. No luck. I've tried the battery trick, no luck. I've also tried going to the Canon site with no luck.
Anyone out there have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Read through these first:

iMovie: Cannot see or control camera
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000
It's more than likely the first article-Canon cameras don't like to be daisy-chained.
Also, run a permissions repair after every update...and be certain that all of your applications are updated to the latest free software version Apple has out now.

  • Previous computer crashed without my Adobe CS3 Design Standard for Macintosh application being uninstalled, I'm having issues with the CS3 on my new Macintosh laptop. Please help!

Since the previous computer crashed without my Adobe CS3 Design Standard for Macintosh applications being uninstalled, I'm having issues with the CS3 on my new Macintosh laptop. Please help, I've tried using the online "contact us" with no success, unable to get in contact with a tech support agent that can assist me.

CS3 is too old to run on a new Macintosh laptop, sorry. You'll have to purchase CS6 or a Creative Cloud subscription.

You've encrypted the boot volume with FileVault, so the reading in your first screenshot is normal. The reading in your last screenshot shows that you have plenty of disk space.
A false "disk full" warning can result from moving a Safari download between folder while it's in progress. Is that what you did?
