MacintoshHD is missing on FCPX

Hi,
Just installed FCPX and I can't set it up to use the internal hard drive. Only displayed devices are external drives (e.g. TimeMachine or other). How can I configure FCPX to use the internal drive to save events and projects ?
Thanks for the info.
Regards

here some screenshots about FCPX and about my home folder:

  • HT203477 Event missing in FCPX 10.1

I have an event that's not showing up in FCPX, but it is there in the Finder, along with a CurrentVersion.fcpevent file
The media from this event is not showing as 'missing' (red) in the project, but simply as blank (black) clips, so re-connecting does not work.
How do i get these files back into the project?
I've tried removing the CurrentVersion.fcpevent and re-starting , but no change...

Everything except that event! In the Libraries window under that particular volume there should be an event called 'Creative Futures' but it's not there, neither is it's footage, though it is all quite clearly there in the Finder when I open that volume's Libraries and Events in the Finder

  • Effects tab is missing in FCPX 10.1.4

My Effects are missing from the Media Browser.
For some reason it's been replaced with the titles tab.
Anyone know why this is happening.
    HELP!

Wow, that is pretty messed up... you selected the Effects browser, it says "Title" but it actyally displays the "Music and Sound" browser!
First, you may try Window->Revert to Original Layout. It may clear things up.
Second, delete preferences: start the application while holding down command and option keys, and confirm when asked.
If these two don't solve it, you may delete the Layouts folder: in the Finder, hold down option key, Go->Library, and navigate inside that to Application Support and the Final Cut Pro. Drag the folder called "Layouts" to the trash.
If none of the above solve the problem, I suggest you remove FCP X completely and download a fresh copy from the Purchases section of the App Store.

  • Custom equalization option missing after FCPX 10.1 update

I made the decision to update to 10.1 with much caution for a number of reasons and "new" features promised on the fancy promo page.
The overall look and feel didn't create so much problems as expected but the downside, I found, is some missing features (again? seriously?)
It seems that, when a clip is selected, there's no more audio Custom equalization option.
When I choose my preset under Inspector > Audio > Audio Enhancements > Equalizaton: (e.g. Flat or Voice Enhance) and change the values, close the
graphic EQ, reselect the clip and re-open the EQ, it's flat again. All changes are lost and the setting defaults to the preset.
Really annoying to see such functions disappear. Any ideas or similar problems, anyone?

Try opening the Effects Browser and use one of the EQ effects. The settings can be further refined by clicking, in the Inspector window, on the equalizer icon. Changes made this way are saved.

  • FCPX newest 10.0.6 update = NICE! ... Do I stay or do I go?!

For all of my ranting and raving about certain issues with Premiere CS6, I have found it to be REALLY great in many ways. With a very helpful forum here its been a fairly easy transition coming from Final Cut Pro 7 last month. Since I edit full time 6 days a week finding just the right NLE for me was REALLY important. I did the 30 day trial of both FCPX and CS6. It took me WAY longer to figure out FCPX, but I gave each a full 30 days and they BOTH had their strengths/weaknesses. But ultimately there were just more features missing from FCPX that drove me nuts and since CS6 was an "easier" transition, I chose CS6. And now this... FCP just released a massive new feature rich update 10.0.6 that fills in several of the HUGE features that were missing that originally drove me away. So what the hell do I do now? Here are my reasons for staying and going as of right now:
    Why stay with Premiere CS6:
It's easy. Not much different than what I was used to with FCP7.
It ties in nicely with Encore which I use often.
Adjustment layers and Warp Stabilizer (my favorite 2 features of Premiere CS6)
I've already hired 2 editors to work with me and made them both learn Premiere CS6 over the last month for my projects. This is huge for me because FCPX would be much more difficult to teach them or have them learn since they too came from FCP7.
This forum. I'm still finding new features every week that make my workflow easier and faster.
FCPX is much more confusing of a transition. After watching hours of tutorials on it sitting down to work I felt like I needed a Warp Stabilizer of my mind. Its an entirely different way of working and thinking about how you edit (granted, many of the things I didn't like are now fixed or added in this latest update)
    Why go to FCPX:
I'm a Mac user and whether its true or not I've always felt that Premiere is optimized for PC users (more cards supported for GPU acceleration, etc. which makes it all run better) Don't get me wrong CS6 works on a Mac, but FCPX is definitely Mac optimized. This and the frequency and size of updates are the two biggest things for me in my leaning toward using FCPX.
While it's a more difficult transition, like I said above, many things I felt were missing have been added back in the latest update.
In many ways, I found FCPX to be so simple, almost too simple. Once I got over that simple doesn't mean that its not good, I found it to actually be a better way of doing things...for MOST (not all) .
Updates, updates, updates. They come fast and often and I love that. They are usually feature rich and the newest 10.0.6 is no exception. FCPX in just over 1 year has gone from "what were they thinking" to "wow" through all these added updates. And its not just adding in things that should have been there from the start, its adding them in a way that is even better and more streamlined than any other NLE.
Errors/Bugs in CS6. Premiere CS6 is a fantastic step for Adobe but I've had more "errors" and "bugs" than I ever thought was possible in just a few projects. Maybe its my computer (the most suped up 2011 iMac available), maybe its my files (AVCHD) but by the end of a recent project I had 7 versions of the same project because it crashed so much and I had to rename it upon re-opening it. Granted, there are many helpful people in this forum that provide great workarounds, but still the issues are there. I'm sure Adobe is working on them and a new program will always have bugs but its been a up and down ride so far. Almost went out and bought a PC the other day just to see if it would be better.
I already have (and totally understand) Compressor and other programs that integrate with FCP. Granted there's a lot to like about AME, I'm just saying.
Multicam is great in both but hands down better (in my opinion of course) on FCPX (especially with this update and the audio channel enhancements). Since I work with multicam edits a TON, this is important to me.
Damn. I thought I had made up my mind and now I don't know what to do. I'd say I'm 55-45 leaning towards staying but that's cuz I'd have to re-learn much of what took me so long to figure out the first time around. And I dread having to tell my editors okay, now learn this. Maybe I'll do another 30 day trial and see (can you do that?) if its worth switching. Maybe its not. I'm probably forgetting 5 things that drove me nuts about FCPX that made me say "that's it, I'm using Premiere!" I know asking this question "Do I stay or go?" in an Adobe forum is kind silly...but I figured why not. One things for sure...when it comes to making this switch, I know it will eventually become a permanent switch and for that reason, I'm totally indecisive.

oh and I just remembered another thing that bothered me in my FCPX experience: memory management. As someone in another forum put it...
"...one thing that FCPX needs is LOTS of memory. One of the main reasons is that there is a memory leak in FCPX, in which FCPX does not release unused accrued memory. As such your memory usage keeps adding up until you get the spinning pinwheel of death."
Yeah, I remember that sucked. With 16gb of memory, I had times where I checked and I had 14-15gb of "inactive" memory and things would slow way down. I had to use a 3rd party app like FreeMemory to release it and make it available/free again to FCPX so it would speed up. But it would just drop back down soon enough. Maybe its been fixed. Maybe it was my OS (10.6.8). Maybe it was the program. Who knows. But I do remember that not being fun.
Also I've read that if you are having issues with FCPX, then maybe "make sure you work with clips of 20 mins or less". What?! So if I have an hour long clip of an event, people suggest to break it up into 20 minute segments and then piece it back together later? This baffled me. PPro has its bugs no doubt and they cause it to freeze and crash but I remember now these things bothered me to no end in my 30 days with FCPX.

  • I am just moving from FCPx to Premiere Pro

I am just moving from FCPx to Premiere Pro, and one of the things I'll miss with FCPx is all the free wipe's, templates, generators that were availible throught places like FCP.co Forum, is there any kind of free stuff available like this but for Premiere?

I did like working in Premiere Pro for one of my school projects but the rendering time and exporting time for it made me stick with FCPX. It was a 45 second fictional commercial and it took over night to finish.
I'm sure I did something wrong or just not used to working in it. I did do some research about Rendering and from what I've read, people say it's unnecescary to render but could be just preference.

  • FCPX Organization -- a Black Art?

I'm currently an FCE user running a trial version of FCPX.  While FCPX seems to have lots of worthwhile features, it's tarted up iMovie approach leaves me cold.  Never liked iMovie from version '09 on, so seeing the same thing in FCPX seems like a monumental step backward.  Can't see how dumbing down FCP or FCE to iMovie levels makes it a better product.
Anyway, with that rant out of the way, how do we get any decent organization of our clips in FCPX?
Yes I'm aware of using folders, keyword collections and all of that stuff.  I can use the tools, but I can't see how to use them for any reasonable degree of organization because unless I've missed something, FCPX forces 'events' (stupid word for it) as the top level of organization.
All I can see happening over time is a growth of a very long list of 'events' with zero organization and having to rely on keywords to find a clip buried in this long disorganized dribble.  I can't find a way to create folders at the top level to bring order to the 'event' chaos. The only way I can see to bring some order to 'events' it is to put them on an external drive with many partitions -- a very stupid approach.
Am I left with naming my events using the old Britsh Army quartermaster's method  "Pot, missionary, one for the cooking of" so at least they'll be alphabetical?
So, can 'events' actulally be organized in FCPX or are we left with a long dribble of disorganized 'events' that trail off the bottom of the screen forever?
If the latter is the case, I'll fire up my Vista VM and learn Vegas Pro 11.  I got it free with my camcorder . . . at least I'll be able to find my clips in between crashes.

I've already stated what I use in the first sentence of my first post -- FCE and occasionally iMovie.
I thought I've made my organizational requirements clear.
In the past three months I've done about 15 short instructional videos using FCE.  All were under one over arching project, with sub projects underneath that.  Each sub project had the same folder structure including one called "Raw Clips", plus folders for music, for narration audio, titles and credits, still images, etc.  All of this was organized via a folder structure on my HD.  I had initially created a folder structure template and copied that for each new project under the top level project.  My 'Raw Clips' folder has the same function as 'Events' in FCPX and served as my 'scratch disk'.  That folder ended up as a bin in each FCE project.
In FCE, I created the project, the necessary bins and the resources are placed into the appropriate bins at the start of the project by dragging and dropping from the folders.  If I needed a resource from a different project, I simply dropped it into the appropriate bin.  My resources were all gathered and organized in the folder structure before FCE was opened.  Once FCE was opened, the project was created, the bins created, multiple sequences created if necessary and the resources dropped into the bins.  I then got to work on putting the video together.  I work in a planned and sequential fashion.  This just covers the editing process and doesn't cover the work I do before pressing 'record'.
I can't use this structure and workflow in FCPX and I need to replace it with something that will accomplish the same thing.  FCPX seems to turn this process upside down, by dumping all clips into an "Event' before the project is even created.  Then the editor has to bring some organization to the clips so that they can be worked with efficiently.
Having the 'Event' as the top level only makes sense in a one event-one project workflow, which may work for many, but will just produce a huge mess for me unless I find a way to make it manageable.
    I wouldn't waste my time trolling . . .

  • Custom video exports

I'm used to having alot of control over the video that I export like in After Effects or Premiere. How can I chose custom widths, hieghts and compression? There seems to be alot of options missing in FCPX. Is there a way to unlock the ability to have more control over my projects?

Full export control has been moved to Compressor.

  • How to relink clips THROUGH the new Project Library??

I updated everything to FCPX 10.1.1.
Some clips became unlinked.  I go to link them ... and am stopped dead by the NEW Library Icon (with all it's internal folders no longer seemingly accessible).  I know the file is in there - if I do a search in Finder for the missing media, it takes me right to where it is.
When I do a relink, stopped dead in my tracks by the new format.
How do I access the folders hidden in the new Project Library to relink my clips with their original media?

    Ben Low wrote:
... when I go to 'locate' or 'search' for the missing file FCPX gets stuck at the door to the Project Library ...
you miss the concept of Libs:
Libraries are no 'real world' folders, just a 'register' where is what .. in best-of-all-worlds, all data (audio, video, stills, projects ...) are on the same drive - but the concept of Libs allows data spread all across your network But handled as 'one', e.g to finally-save Projects, outsource old data etc ...
A Lib acts like a (super-)folder, but isn't. Simple example: a 10GB lib could fit on a 2GB drive! .. if data is spread on some other drives. But Finder says 'here', due to use of hard- or sym-links. ....
... I read in my searches that one doesn't have to have one's media stored in the Library, but I haven't found a protocol yet for saving media elsewhere.
It's always in some LIb, but not physically... s.above ...
..  One thing I can't figure out:  Folders.  I love folders.  I use them all the time to organize.
    obsolete,
get familiar with the concept of tags/keywords/smartlists.
    example:
a clip is tagged x-mas, grandma, 2002, funny scene .. one clip, one storage location, many ways to find it.
now, your old drawer/folder system: the scene with grandma wearing a funny hat ... do I have to dig in folder 'videos2002' or 'videos2003'? sub-folder xmas or birthday? or is it n my 'out-takes drive'.. but under what name? your one clip can only be in one drawer... but should be found under several keywords... sooo?
    Folders = old school
    tags = much more convenient.
(plus: you can use tags very similiar as your old folders... but a computer is much faster in dig'n-search than you, manually
    concerning re-linking:
I once had the effect, a 'lost' drive had to be re-mounted:
the red-icon-of-terror (cam missing), relink doesn't came up with a suggestion; clicked on import from camera, clicked to my cam-archive on some drive - and WHILE doing so FCPX instantly found the old connection (no re-import nor re-linking neccessary)..
That drive was unintended un-plugged while using FCPX ..... never happened again.

  • Possible with larger timecode window with new FxPlug 3 functions?

    Hi,
One of the things I miss in fcpx is a larger timecode window. This is a must when working in pair with a reporter. The small standard timecode display is just too small and too hard to read from a distance.
The new FxPlug 3 functions "allows developers to create custom interfaces for their plugins inside of Final Cut."
So does anyone have an idea if it is possible to make a larger timecode window that displays the source timecode?
    Thanks!

    Well...
The compression I gave you was h.264. A nice small web version that plays nice and looks good.
Not sure what compression at the size you were talking about would actually get you to 2 gigs.
I'd send him that... or ask for a more specific call on what he gets from the TV work. I suggest he open one of those files in QUICKTIME and hit COMMAND-I (EYE) to get the information. Have him post or send you a screen grab like this:

  • Several Referenced Events. Why? And how to fix it?

How do I fix this mess?
And how do I avoid it?

Don't see the reason why they link as referenced though. There are no files from those referenced events in the project. BUT when one event is renamed or moved the referenced file goes missing (for FCPX) - even when the file is not in that event?
So I am just trying to understand why the "program is lying". It refers to events, as 1 clip used. But none are?
Don't get me wrong, if everything is okay - it okay. But when files go missing because FCPX cannot find the referenced event - I got to wonder why..

  • Things I cannot make work in FCPX - Hoping somebody can tell me I just missed it

Ok reading this after typing I think this is mostly a feature wishlist for the next version - outside of things already discussed like XML export.
    1. Importing footage that is on a different disk duplicates the original media. I have the same problem if I have an event on the same disk then I move it to another - the 'Original Media' folder merrily starts replacing the 4kb alias files with the original media. I think this is a bug since there is a checkbox that is supposed to prevent this.
    2. There is no option to not duplicate media when importing from camera which is required to import AVCHD footage. I think the lack of option counts as a design bug esp. since FCP7 could do this just fine.
    3. There is no scrubber bar under the viewer - it is ergonomically annoying to have to move the mouse over on the left in the event library. Skimming over this bar would also be a lot easier and more useful if combined with a scroll wheel option to get some precision in the selection - the current skim thing is only good for finding a clip if you have a mess and for a very rough cut unless you have some kind of super stable hands.
    4. I can no longer move frames for footage under the viewer using the mouse wheel (surface on the Magic Mouse). Please bring this back
    5. Skimming is ok, if setting context was clearer - e.g. I think it works really well in the project view where you have to click on the project to select it before skimming starts. Can we have that option for all other places too? My S key is going to wear out.
    6. On the same note, skimming sometimes fails to turn back on - the icon highlights but no skimming. I have only noticed this problem in the timeline.
    7. Some way to bring in created (as opposed to recorded) footage is desperately needed - even if it is not full integration with the timeline (aka Send to Motion) at least let me bring footage back in without having to reimport it as though it was a completely new clip. There may be cases where that is useful and somebody might want to use auditioning for it, but for other cases where you have to redo all your editing, find all the places you have used it and hope you didn't miss any is really painful.
    8. Speaking of integration - at least integrate to Motion. Let me rotoscope a project onto a bus passing by that is used in another project without having to pretend I can do it all with zero iteration somehow exporting from one app and importing to the other... just one time with perfect final cut results.
    9. How do I sample noise? I have a lot of cases where a segment of footage has say a car going by - in the past I used SoundTrack to handle this - you 'set noise print' then apply noise reduction - is there a way to do this with an audio filter I have not found yet? The basic noise reduction stuff does not seem too useful to be honest - maybe if my footage had wind noise - but it doesn't. It has a stupid car in the middle of a wedding.
    10. (deaming) Some way for Motion to see footage organized in events... put another way, why are events inside FCPx - they should be a shared media function - once I have organized footage, any application I have that wants to use it should be able to - not just 'Share | Media Browser' for project output. There may be cases where I have organized footage I want to use in Motion and where I want to output the result of motion as another clip in an event (modifiable please). Seems like events are underperforming their potential. Basically how can I send a subclip - sorry - keyword identified range selection - to Motion without making a project putting just that clip in it and then exporting (sorry, sharing) it as a quicktime movie? Luckily for me I don't have to worry about pro-res being a proxy format - I would feel sorry for somebody trying to do this with 4k footage.
    11. Many people seem to have an issue with the term Event - can we have a preference to rename it? Say Media Library and Shelf or something more abstract (since Bin is too old-school) so it does not imply more meaning than it has. I have to include some low-priority requests so the good ones will make it right?
    12. Projects are way too big. It will be hard to archive them etc. without messing about with their internals and I'm never quite sure that is safe. An option when copying them or moving them to strip out render files would be nice as would an option to clean them up - they should not really contain things other than my work - my edit decisions - temp file junk should live elsewhere or at least be an easy and supported way to eradicate when I'm done working with something.
    13. I'm using disk images to manage unmounting events and projects without having to purchase a dozen different locally attached storage devices. This is a hack to workaround for an inability to manage some kind of workspace for events and projects - personal stuff vs. paid stuff at the very least - some formal support for this would be better. Never sure if I should trust image files for this or if there is some deep gotcha to using any of this stuff over a network that I'm going to get hosed by since there is no explanation of *why* network volumes are evil to FCPx.
    14. Ok, so FCPx is missing too many features to import old files - can you at least make an import for some things? The media handling side - the bin organization from an old FCP project? Maybe some basic importing - if I have to redo old work 99% of things do not involve any more than a basic transition - the rest is all clips and laying them out properly. Ok and simple compositing would be nice too. I have not found anything I cannot do in a magnetic timeline that I could do with tracks - fine the import will have cap clips and non-linked clips etc. but as long as it plays the same that is an ok starting point.
Ok its the weekend. Time to go back to the family and stop dreaming.
btw I tried going back to FCS7 and Premiere - they are both more capable, but both feel quick clunky after using FCPx - I find myself getting annoyed easily. The scopes and rendering in FCPx is really fantastic and the organization features are way better than subclips (physical storage issues aside). But it has taken a while for me to get to this conclusion; I kept stopping and muttering 'that's it - I want my money back'. But now I hate life since I have no editor I'm happy with now - thanks - you gave me something I get annoyed with, but have made what I used to use equally irritating but for different reasons. Yes yes I know Apple does not read these forums, this is just a personal monologue and no I'm not trying to inflame somebody who's ability to feed his children has been seriously messed with - I really feel for those that depend on editing for a living using FCP7 - I'm just a moonlighter - so please don't respond with vitriol since I sure don't want to end up trying to defend or promote FCPx.

Which ones would those be? Developers or Apple engineers? I know they peruse LAFCPUG, not here.
    Regardless. USE FRAKIN FEEDBACK.
That's the only way it's going to help us all, if everyone makes the effort to use it, otherwise you're just blovinating, and there's enough of that on these forums.

  • Missing media that isn't missing... FCPX (10.1.1)

I recently got an updated copy of my web series back from my director/editor who had been working in Final Cut Pro X (10.1.1).  I was using FCP 10.0.9 so before trying to open the file on the hard drive he'd sent me, I upgrade to the latest version of the program.  I then opened the file from the hard drive, rather than by opening FCP and going through File>Open.  The library opened and I was able to see everything cut on the timeline which looked more like FCP7 than the FCPX I had gotten used to.  I was excited by this, but also saw that the program needed to go through some rendering as was indicated by the orange highlighting at the top of the timeline as well as the percentage icon that was slowly counting upward.
Unfortunately, after it finished rendering and there were no more background tasks running, I noticed the orange highlighting at the top of the timeline were still there and that anything below them would not play back video.  Audio is playing just fine.  Instead, I would get the red screen with the yellow exclamation triangle as if the media was missing.  The thing is, it's not.  I can play back the native files from the library just fine when they're not in the timeline and I don't seem to have an option to relink the media from the timeline.  Maybe I'm just missing it, but I don't see it.
My thought was that perhaps my director/editor had used plugins or effects with the affected footage that I did not have, and thus, they could not render properly.  Is there something far more likely that I'm not thinking of?  I haven't gotten a response back from him since asking the same question yesterday, so I thought I'd check here in case anyone else has run into a similar issue.  Thanks.

Like you say... somthing is amiss. I'm afraid I cannot help. Is your Director/Efditor's timeline playing properly? I suspect that somthing is corrupted but I think that only he can help you. Maybe someone else can troubleshoot all the possibilities, tho.
    Anyone?

  • FCPX Missing Event "Event Name Already Exists"

I imported some footage into FCPX in a new event. When I went back into Final Cut, the event was missing. I've searched through as much of my computer as possible (from typing in the event name and file numbers in Finder to digging through folders) and it is NOWHERE. The footage only exists on my computer so I'm in a bit of a bind. Last night I finally accepted that it was gone, so I tried to upload the footage that I do still have. When I typed in the new event name, a box popped up that said ""Blabla" already exists" Choose another name"..... So the event does exist somewhere on my computer I just have absolutely no idea where it has gone or where to find it. It's not in any of the Final Cut Backups that I have.

I'm trying really hard to not freak out right now, but I literally just lost 4 hours of work on an edit and I can't find it.
First of all, I started a project and worked for 4 hours straight, from start to finish. I went to export the project XML and it froze. I waited like 3 minutes and then had to force quit. I opened it like 4 more times and had to keep force quitting bcuz it wasn't responding. I restarted my mac and when I opened FPCX it didn't freeze but my work was gone. But not all of it. Literally the first two clips of the edit and thats it. I checked the backups and it didn't seem to make them. I went to restart the edit, and when I went to create a new event (with the same name as before), it said it existed.
I'm hoping you could tell me if there is any way I can get my project back. Where might these "created events" be if they aren't showing up in FPCX. I search bared my finder and they don't show up?
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Export trouble with FCPX - missing clips

Puzzled by problems exporting from FCPX.   Video of a couple of clips disappear, and only shows black.   Audio is OK, tho.
It's 4:30 in length.  Most clips are on main storyline, except for a few cut-aways.   Not doing anything special, except for a couple of dissolves.   Format is ProRes 422 HQ.   Tried export same as project and export to h.264.  Re-started app and machine.   Looks to effect the same two clips every time.  I don't have Compressor 4, yet.
There's not many options that I know to change.
I realized this is a big problem since there's no way out of FCPX, in terms of video or EDL.
    Ideas?

I've had this issue weekly with a show I produce.  It bugs me for hours.  In my case, I have to wait until the entire timeline is rendered, and then I have to export it to ProRes 422.  Any other codec requires a re-render, which provokes the problem again.  The problem starts when I take a few clips from my P2 and use the stability function along with any color correction topping them off with titles.  It seems as though part of the rendering process involves re-analyzing the entire clip during rendering, and if I don't allow it to completely render the clips, I get missing video with graphics on top.  I have a 12-core machine with 16GB RAM, and yet it still takes about two hours to render my 30 minute show after I'm done.  This doesn't include the hours it takes to analyze the P2 clips as I import them, which also hinders me during editing and causes continual crashes.  I'm hoping this new update I'm about to run addresses some of those issues.
