MacintoshHD/private/var/vm taking up 34GB?! Anything I can do about it?
I've got a MBA (late 2010 model) and I was downloading some movies when I got a message saying that I didn't have the storage space for them. The last time I checked my SSD (128GB), I had over 50GB of free space so this came as a little surprise. So I checked my SSD and sure enough, I only had 7 GB of free space. I knew I had some apps and whatnot that I had been meaning to get rid of but nothing that huge. After cleaning my HD, I had 22GB of space, still a far cry from the original 50+ so I did some exploring. I found a file in MacintoshHD called "private." I couldn't remember ever making it or ever seeing it there before so I checked it out. And sure enough, it was taking up over 35GB. I understand that it is normally a hidden folder and a few months back I had to settle an issue and I had all hidden folders "unhidden." Anyway, after checking to see which of the containing "private" folders was taking up so much space, I found "vm" weighing in at a whopping 34.36GB. I understand that it's supposed to be virtual memory snapshots or something for when my computer goes into hibernation. But what I don't understand is why on Earth is it taking up over 34GB of space? I mean that can't be "average." There are 34 individual "swapfile" files numbered from 0 all the way to 33 with each one at ~1GB. Is there anything I can do to clear up this wasted space? I've only got 128GB to work with so 34GB is a lot to have sacrificed. Any suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt
Delete the Sleep Image File. Then Turn off Hibernate feature. It is only good for it you let the system run the battery down all the way. So don't let that happen.

i have an ipod touch it is either a second or third edition and i have just had to restore it to factory setting as it was not working and now the wifi on the device is no longer working. Is there anything i can do about this?
Is it this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Otherwise:
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

So basically everytime i go into an application it quits about 1-2 minutes in or less. i'm finding its not just one application but all of them. My phone is fully up to date and so are my apps. Anything i can do about it? its really starting to bug me that i can't use a lot of my apps.
Standard troubleshooting...
1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider. Slide to power off. Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
3. Remove apps from Recently Used (multi-tasking) list...
- From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
- Swipe up on the app preview card to remove it from the list
- Press the home button when done.
4. If still a problem restore with your backup.
5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue. -
My phone got damp. It wouldn't work for about a week. Now the screen is completely dark, altho I can receive calls. I just can't make a call because I can't see the numbers. Anything I can do about that? Is this a simple repair?
Yup, it sounds like your iPhone needs to be sent in for service.

Virgin Mobile iphone screen cracked. Is there anything Apple can do about it?
I bought my iphone 4 at Best Buy less than a year ago. My servicer is Virgin Mobile and I just dropped my iphone on its face and the corner of the screen cracked. I was wondering if there is anything Apple can do about this, before I go and pay to get this repaired somewhere? I Already checked the Virgin Mobile 1-year warranty and it didn't help
Make an reservation to see an Apple Genius at the Apple Store nearest you.
Make sure you indicate the problem with the phone when you make the reservation.
They can help you find a solution.

$90.00 deactivation fee. Is there anything consumers can do about this?
I paid for a month-to-month subscription to Creative Cloud and had to cancel because I no longer needed it. I am utterly shocked, annoyed, and upset I had to pay at $90.00 deactivation fee. Is there anything consumers can do about this? This is outrageous.
If you only signed up for a month-by-month membership, why did you face a cancellation fee? Did you sign up for an annual contract?
But I think there should be exceptions to the rule
What kind of exceptions?
I think others should know about this hefty cancellation fee.
It's clearly spelled out in the Ts & Cs.
"If you cancel within the first month, you receive a full refund. Otherwise, you are billed 50% of your remaining contract obligation." -
Deleted private/var/db folder.... Can't boot
Hi, first I know that what I did was stupid but I didnt know what I was doing.. and I still don’t know what are the consequences.
In order to save space on my MBP 2011 Snow Leopard, I deleted private/var/db folder, yes the whole folder to the trashbin and then I emptied it. Files that were in use weren´t deleted.
So I rebooted and the screen is stuck on apple logo with the turning wheel and safe boot start normally but end up with the turning wheel too.
How can I put fix this issue?
Can I recover the files deleted ? Or at least put back the files that are still in the trash bin ?
Thank you for any help.If they borrow a disc it's possible to replace just the deleted directory using Pacifist:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes: Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone

Private/var folder (5.66GB) on my desktop; can I delete it?
It got there as I was copying ApplicationSupport/CrashReporter, Logs/DiagnosticReports from the root Library, and Application Support/CrashReporter, Application Support/Rapport/User/Logs from the Home/User/(Me) Library folder. The invisible private/var folder appeared as I was dragging copies of these to the desktop.
I emailed these to Trusteer for troubleshooting, because of Rapport conflict prblms with other Safari extentions (see other discussions on this).
The prblm is I now can't remember where this private/var folder came from, and I'm afraid I might have dragged the original rather than a copy, and I don't want to trash it until I'm sure.
My MacBk Pro has been booting up and acting normally since this folder is on the desktop, so I guess this is a good sign. My understanding is that a folder/file on the desktop is inactive anyway.
Can I trash it w/o consequences????Thnx baltwo, did that, got:
Charless-MacBook-Pro:~ ChasM$ chflags hidden /private
chflags: /private: Permission denied
Charless-MacBook-Pro:~ ChasM$
This despite that I'm logged in as Administrator, and that I added "Administrator" and "Me" to Terminal Permissions Read/Write priveleges; "System" already had Read/Write.
By the way, I assume that when it works, this is supposed to make my invisible Private folder visible??
Also, I tried typing in these commands rather than pasting - same result -
Once this happens, it takes a while like it is catching up but eventually will clear the jam. It has locked up and or crashed and I manually have to reset my computer.
This can happen if you've zoomed the page. That effects the screen dimensions as reported by JavaScript and seems to confuse Yahoo.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

I was getting an unresponsive script warning on most web pages, but more persistent on Windows Live telling me to stop script or continue. I could view the pages by doing both and the only way i could stop the warnings from appearing was to disable the Adobe PDF Plug-in. Increasing the time for the script to run didn't seem to work either. It was taking too long for the pages to load and Firefox used to hang.
After disabling the plug-in it stopped doing it.
Does disabling it effect my browser in any other way?Hello Vivek,
I have learned I do have the latest Adobe Reader installed and that the plug-in is included in that download & install. So apparently the problem lies with the Firefox plug-in checker.
I did the ALT + H, while in FF, & deleted the file, retried update, using the Firefox Plug-in Checker w/same results.
Then I exited FF, did the Windows key + R typed in %APPDATA% & located it then deleted it, and now wouldn't you know the Plug-In Checker is not working, (We've encountered an error. Please try your request again later.)
Just gave it another shot & it's working . But still no joy, same results, showing the plug-in needs updating - being outdated version. -
Apple took money out of my account. I canceled my charge card and will not give them another one. Is there anything else I can do? I will cancel my account before I worry with my bank acount all the time. Now I can't even sign in for free apps
OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again. -
IPod Nano screen is broken... anything i can do about it?
Hello,
I got my iPod Nano in november, unfortunatly a couple days ago I accidentally cracked my screen. I did not get the additional extended Apple Care Support Plan, but luckly I am still under the warranty, which my iPod came with. I went to the apple store, and they did not help me very much.. any suggestions on what I should do about this? Can i get a replacement? Will apple fix it for me?
Thank You in advance...I would take a look at this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=32222
"What about out-of-warranty service?
If service for your iPod is not covered by Apple's warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, Apple offers other options. If your iPod requires service because the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, in the United States, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $59, plus $6.95 shipping. If your iPod requires service for other issues (except accidental or misuse damage), in the United States, Apple will replace it for a service fee of $249, plus $6.95 shipping."

Adobe Photoshop CS4 won't open in Yosemite. Anything I can do about this?
After installing Yosemite I was told that in order "To open Adobe Photoshop CS4 you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.
Unfortunately I was also told that I needed to upgrade to Java 8 update 25...which I did thinking it would also resolve the Photoshop issue.
Silly me!
It probably made things worse as far as the possibility of opening Photoshop CS4.
Now what do I do?
I don't want to go back to Java 6. Are there any other options?
Thanks. Thanks Rikk. Now the problem is installing legacy.
Every time I select the "install" option I get a blank screen.
I've been reading other posts about this and it may have something to do with Safari.
I'll try another browser and see what happens -
I can only print the first few lines of an e-mail, even when it is on "Full View" on my screen. Moreover, it prints with very small print that is hard to read and also contains additional material on the screen that is not part of the e-mail.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== Since the first day I started using FirefoxI talked to Adobe Support tonight and found this issue to be a known problem with some of the Adobe Cloud products when using older hardware, in this case the C782.
So, we found a workaround. Unfortunately the work around isn’t efficient and adds more steps to their normal printing routine
Open InDesign and create, modify delete the card
Select FileàExport
A window will appear. Pick the location you wish to save the file
Once the File is saved another window will appear
“EXPORT Adobe PDF”
An Export to Adobe PDF window will appear. Accept all defaults. MAKE CERTAIN “VIEW PDF
After EXPORTING” is CHECKED
Select Export
Once EXPORT is complete the file will open automatically in Adobe Acrobat
Most likely the screen will be very large
Select the + - sign at the top of the page to adjust the page size to view the image
Select FileàPrint
The Print window will appear
Select the printer from the drop down
# of COPIES is just below Printer
Select OK
I hope this helps anyone who is having similar issues

I normaly use the zoom feature with Facebook in order to more easily be able to read and see. I like how the entire page zooms in. Recently, however, the zoom started reseting every time i click myself from any page on Facebook to any other. The zoom simply won't save at all, it just resets to the default value.
