Mack Book Pro Stuck on Gray Screen

My Mac Book Pro is stuck on the gray screen. I have done the following
-Start computer using shift- nothing happens
-Started computer with option + R, when asked where I want to instal the Mac OS Lion it gives me two options Mac HD and Recovery HD but I cant click
on either because they say they are "locked"
-Started my computer by pressing option- attached a recovery disk I created- clicked recovery disk- clicked reinstall- clicked disk where I want it installed and it says- this disk does not use GUID Partition Table Scheme. Use disk utitlity to change the partition scheme.   I CANT ACCESS DISK UTILITY!!!!!!
FYI I did create the utility disk using my MAC that has mountain lion on it.
HELP!!!!!

Safe Mode is not working, thus it's not a thrid party kernel extension file problem.

You mean command option r and that's Internet Recovery and it installs the OS X version that came on the machine, in your case it's 10.7, not 10.8, this is why you get the "Locked"
Obviously you can't install a older OS X version over a newer one or it's RecoveryHD partition without first erasing the ENTIRE drive (and losing all your programs and files)
this disk does not use GUID Partition Table Scheme. Use disk utitlity to change the partition scheme.

You didn't correctly format the drive to be bootable first.
OS X can only be hold option/alt key bootable from GUID and OS X Extended Journaled formatted drives, then if OS X is installed by a OS X installer or cloned there to "bless it" to make it bootable.

  • Mac book pro has partially gray screen

Part of the screen in the center of my daughter's new mac book pro  stays gray at all times.  It is more noticeable when she is on a dark background but it is in a u shape at the center of the screen.

If it's a new machine take it back, I haven't heard anything like this before and sounds like a hardware issue Apple needs to take a look at.

  • Macbook Pro Stuck at Gray Screen When Entering Boot Options

    Hello apple community,
I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro 2008, and I decided recently to replace the 250 Gb hard drive with a new WD Black 500 Gb hard drive. I backed up all the data onto my external hard drive and replaced the hard drive. Now I am trying to enter the disk utility to boot from the disk utility by holding the option key. When I turn on the computer and hold the option key it gets stuck on the gray screen. Does anybody have any idea why this is happening? Thanks.

OK. When you say it doesn't work does that mean you cannot see the drive in Disk Utility? Of course that means you need to boot from another drive such as your external backup. If you happen to have a Snow Leopard DVD to boot your computer then you could try with that. But there isn't much you can do if you don't have another bootable drive in an external enclosure or other form of hookup like a universal drive adaptor.
Your model is not new enough to use Internet Recovery. I don't know what more to offer. You cannot even verify that the new HDD is OK by putting it in an external enclosure.

  • MacBook Pro Stuck on Gray Screen

My MacBook Pro is stuck on the grey screen and won't move past it. I have tried safe startup, resetting the NAVRAM, I am currently in the disk utility and when I verify disk permissions, it says this:
    - user differs on .ds_store, should be 0; user is 501
    - group differs on .ds_store; should be 80; group is 20
    - permissions differ in .ds_store; should be -rw-rw-r-- ; they are -rw-r--r--
    - unable to set owner and group on .ds_store; error 22: invalid argument
    - unable to set permissions on .ds_store; error 22: invalid argument
    - user differs on Applications/.DS_store; should be 0; user is 501
    Specs:
    System Version: 10.8.5
    System Build: 12F45
I honestly don't remember the year.
Also, no backups at all. I checked my box for original install disks and don't see any so I assume they don't come with any, anymore. Any help is appreciated!

  • Mac Pro stuck on gray screen after installing software for a new keyboard

I am having a huge issue with my very important work computer! For a few weeks, my Mac has been freezing on the gray screen during start up. Since I had two external hard drives plugged in, I would unplug one of them and the Mac would always restart correctly once one was unplugged. Well today I was installing software for a new keyboard and the mac prompted me to restart. Once I restarted, the gray screen came up again and no matter what I did it would not start up correctly again. I tried unplugging everything except the keyboard and monitor and nothing works. I tried ejecting the crash-causing CD with the keyboard using all of the commands I found on this forum board and nothing worked. I saw forums about manually ejecting the CD by pushing a pin-hole but I cannot find that pinhole anywhere! Then again, the CD might not even be the problem but since the computer gave me the gray screen of death right after using the CD I am thinking that it is the problem. I use this computer for editing a TV show and creating websites so there is a ton of files on it and I need to get it up and running again ASAP. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I am sure by now you can tell that I am not a Mac expert so please dumb it down for me. Thank you!!

I would start by breaking your thoughts and sentences out from one long paragraph.
    Start at the basics.
    Always have backups.
One at least that is a spare boot system you can use.
Clone your system. SuperDuper does a great job for only $29
Boot from another hard drive or last OS X DVD
Repair your drive with Apple Disk Utility along with 3rd party disk maintenance and repair
Hold Option key until the boot manager, then hold mouse to open optical drive.
You can hold mouse on startup and it will eject also.
Hold and continue to hold Shift key during startup to repair the boot drive in minimal fashion.
What device and driver? hint: never use CD, just go online as the CD is usually out of date anyway.
Fill in Mac OS X version and more about hardware would help in posts and in your profile signature.

  • Mac Pro Stuck at Grey Screen, then will only boot into OS X Utilities.

My Mac Pro is stuck at Gray Screen.  When I reset PRAM, it loads the OSX Utilities screen, prompting me Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall OS X, Get Help, or Disk Utility.  I ran Disk Repair and Repair Premissions, same thing.... stuck at grey screen.
What will happen to the data on my HD if I choose to Reinstall the OS X?  IS that the best choice?  Thanks.

Off hand I think your drive may be bad. But to find out you need to erase the drive, so you will need to have a recent, bootable backup.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not work, then you need to replace your hard drive.

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

    Hello Communitie Supporters,Need your (HELP)
It seem that i have a problem with my Mac Book Pro.iam losing memory faster then i can count it fill up quickly i have no idea how to stop it..
Now i try Tidy Up Mac cleaner Mackeeper dont work memory is still leanking some how
Hello, i have a Mack book pro 15" Lion OS X 10.7.4 it say's your startup disk is almost full.. how do i fix that?

You don't need to keep your mac 'clean' - it's not a Windows PC. It pretty much takes care of maintenance itself. All those warnings, errors, alerts, that programmes like MacKeeper give you are simply false. Many of the files it says you should remove, you SHOULDN'T.
Unless your mac is showing some kind of performance problem, leave the system alone. If it is showing some kind of performance problem, post in the relevant forum of this website to get help.
The worst thing you can do is download a 3rd party app that promises to solve things for you. 9 times out of 10 they just create more trouble than you had to start with.

  • Mac Mini Stuck at Gray Screen

Hi, I have an Intel based mac mini running 10.4.6 I believe what ever is the latest tiger version. Upon restarting after installed updates computer can not go past the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath it. I have restarted and tried all of the different key combinations the only one it will recognize is the option key. I have used the option key to select the c drive where the operating system is installed but it goes right back to being stuck at gray screen. I have used the option key to also let me use the install disc to run disk utility and repair the disc which said volume is verified and repaired and good to go. Only thing I haven't tried is firewire boot but at this point I don't think thats the right answer. Im thinking its hardware issue any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me out- Ryan

Will it start up in Safe mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
If it can start up in Safe mode, that would point to a problem specific to your account, and probably a Login Item given that it hangs the way it does at the gray screen with spinny wheel. In that case, take a look at this procedure, too.
