MacKeeper clean up system?

Has anyone ever tried MacKeeper??? I'm wondering if it really works or if there are issues?

You mustn't install this application. It deletes Mac OS X files and damage it. Read > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
Apart from that, you shouldn't install any cleaning application. OS X know how to take care of itself, so you don't have to do anything. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/Scripts.html

It's not really malware but it is extremely poorly written software.  It has a fairly good user interface and is easy to use but, when the virus protection kicks in, it hogs all of the CPU resources and everything else slows to a crawl.  Consider thirty seconds merely to open a large folder.  I had it for several weeks and trashed it.  Also, trashing it is easy.  The old "drag to trash can" works just fine.

  • TM Restore -- Clean Install System First?

I'm about to replace crashed drive on G4 Powerbook. All my data is backed up on Time Machine. After I install the new HD & format, is it better to do a clean install of Leopard off the DVD first, then Restore from TM? Or should I just let TM restore the entire HD, including the backed-up System? Does it matter?
Also, if I do a clean install off the System DVD first, then do the TM restore, will TM write over my cleanly-installed System and restore the backed up System instead anyway?

Just format the drive, then do the full restore per #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Best way to clean my system

Is Mackeeper the best way to clean my MacBook Air system, or does Apple offer a free equivalent?

MacKeeper is bad news. Avoid at all costs.
In general, you do not need 'cleaning' apps.
The daily. weekly and monthly Unix clean up scripts are run automatically, and unless problems arise that's all that's needed.
The exception would be if you're doing lots of movie rendering or audio processing with large files being created and deleted regularly. In that case it may be necessary to defrag occasionally. Files up to 40MB (I think; I'll need to check that figure) are defragged on the fly by the system, so it's seldom necessary to do it unless you're using large files regularly.
Cache cleaning should only be done as part of a diagnostic routine when a problem arises; it is definitely not required under normal circumstances. When it is necessary, booting into Safe Mode will usually be sufficient.
I haven't needed to touch my iMacs with any of that for about 4 years now and they're still running sweetly.
Biggest cause of problems is badly written third-party software, so check around before installing anything you're not sure of.
If you feel the need for AV, which is not really needed either as your Mac's XProtect system should sort most malware as long as you keep up to date with security updates, then ClamXAV is safe and free.

  • Clean Install System 8.5 - Desktop Menu and Get Info??

    Hello,
I'm helping an older lady with a clean install of system 8.5, upgrading from 7.5.3. on a 6214CD Performa. (I'm mostly using 7.6). To my suprise, with the full install (not custom), I'm not seeing several things in the Desktop Pull down menu - like for example Get Info, and some things under Views. Further the keystrokes I've used for 15 years like Apple "I" for "get info" don't work. What am I missing?
Secondly, I lost access to one partition on an external back-up hard drive by accidently using a 68k Disk Tools vs the new Disk Tools for 8.5 and the 603e processor. My question is, can I "initialize" only ONE partition or will Initialize attempt to re-do the whole SCSI hard drive, and go into the partitioning thing again?
    Thanks
    Lowell

    Hi, Lowell -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    I'm not seeing several things....
Look in Finder's Preferences - it may be under the Edit menu when Finder is active, or in one of the control panels (it's been a long time since I was in OS 8.anything). Locate an item named Simple Finder, and uncheck it. The change should be immediate.
Can't help with the Disk Tools question, at least not directly...
Try running Drive Setup (or the OS 8 equivalent - can't recall its name - HD Setup?). If you can see and select that partition, you should be able to select either Mount Volume and/or Update Driver from one of its menus (the Functions menu in Drive Setup). Neither of those functions is destructive, and one or the other, or both, may be able to recover the ability to mount and access the partition.

  • New to mac need help on cleaning mac system

Hello guys i am new to the mac i got it yesterday and i am so use to a pc...so i have some questions
i want to know how i can clean my mac? (the system not the outside)
how to clean out the internet history etc.( i know on my pc i had these one click apps. that i just open and it would clean my computer out such as the internet history, Cookies etc. and it would clean up left over files that are left from software that i have uninstall is there a software like that for the mac?
oh this is the new macBook pro the 09 and its the 13inc. 4gb
    Thanks

    Hello Candy:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
A Mac running OS X needs no "cleaning." For example, OS X "defrags" files of less than 20 MB on the fly. Routine cache cleaning, etc, is done in the background as long as your computer is either on or sleeping. Let your Macbook Pro sleep so that the background tasks will run once you wake it up.
_DO NOT_ trash system files or indiscriminately clear cache files (that will make the Mac run slower).
At the risk of being pedantic, do not worry about maintenance tasks for a Mac running OS X.

  • Is MacKeeper a good system to use?

Is the Mac Keeper a good system to use? I have had Panda in the past.
Does the new Safari browser provide adequate protection against viruses and malware?

    I totally concur with Niel.
MacKeeper is crapware. It promises the world and delivers nothing. The little it can do, can be done for free with OS X.
It is to be avoided at all costs.

    Hello,

It appears that most of these files are ruby gems (nokogiri, redcloth, etc.). I cannot remember how nor when they ended up here (this is a 2 years old Arch installation).
I already remove all manually installed gems from my system but these files remain. If any of you has an opinion on what would be the best way to clean this, I'd be glad to hear.

I interpreted that as in you used pacman to remove them, my bad. Just to make sure though, you did 'gem uninstall' as root, right? Running it as a normal user just removes the gem files from your user's home directory.
If they're not known by pacman or gem, then you'll need to identify and remove them manually.

  • How to clean large system log files?

I believe that OS X saves a lot of system data in log files that become very large.
I would like to clear old history logs.
How may I view and clean system log files?

    Thank you Niel.
I have obtained the list at /private/var/log.
There are a lot of files in there.
Since I am not familiar with functions of these files should I be concerned that by simply deleting all of the files in folder /private/var/log will not cause any problems? Would this action present some unintended consequences?

  • Cleaning old systems and applications from Mac

I want to clean up my computer of old system folders and applications that are not it use but am afraid some settings will be lost. Is there a careful way to do this? Is spring cleaning or another 3rd party software the best option. I particularly want to get rid of CS, CS2, and CS3 but I notice that each time I upgrade it pulls information from the previous install and I don't want to mess up my CS4, or CS5 settings.

"I particularly want to get rid of CS, CS2, and CS3 but I notice that each time I upgrade it pulls information from the previous install and I don't want to mess up my CS4, or CS5 settings."
Trash only the application. Leave the setting files alone.
"I want to clean up my computer of old system folders and applications that are not it use but am afraid some settings will be lost. *Is there a careful way to do this?"*
Leave the system folders alone is the +"golden rule"+ around here. Unless _you really know what you are doing,_ it's best to leave them be.
For cleaning up your computer of unwanted and/or unneeded files here are a few suggestions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305454 Mac OS X 10.4: FileVault - "There isn't enough space on your hard disk..." alert
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

  • Lenovo pre-load OS vs. clean install + System Update

Hi all, just wondering what the conventional wisdom is these days: stick with the Lenovo pre-load OS or perform a clean install and then use System Update to add whichever drivers seem worth adding.
I've traditionally performed clean installs on new computers, but I'd be happy to skip the chore if it's not all that beneficial anymore.
