Mackeeper virus

0.- I am running OSX 10.9.2. on iMac.
1.- Checking a couple of the previous posts on this subject I can confirm: I have never installed or purchased Mackeeper on this system, I have already checked through my applications and nowhere the program is listed in the applications.
2.- However I currently notice problems in working with Safari:
all hotlinks and urls in web content are currently showing up in green understroke characters. When hoovering over these hotlinks (not even double clicking) a dialog box appears by "awardhotspot.com" "you could win an ipad" (see screenshot 1). This part is obviously malware, but I don't recognize which one. Any help in clarifying to me which malware it is and how to get rid of it, would be welcome.
randomly (I didn't discover the pattern) a site opens mackeeperadd.zeobit.com (screenshot 2). I don't know whether this is a separate worm or related to issue 1. Would like clarification on how to get rid of it.
thanks.

You have installed the Downlite and GoPhoto.it adware, and possibly others as well. You will find removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide.

I have a mackeeper virus and can't get rid of it??? Please someone help me?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Hi Annie....
Follow the instructions here > Uninstalling MacKeeper
Since that may not delete all the files associated with the application use this utility >  Download AppDelete for Mac - Delete apps and their associated files

  • Mackeeper virus - how to get rid

I downloaded some software last week - I honestly can't remember what it was called but I was in a rush to do something. Anyway afterwards I had a symbol at the top of the homepage on the banner at the top of a sort of ghost face in a helmet called Mackeeper. I deleted Mackeeper as I saw it, but now I have a virus which is all over my internet - constantly popping up new pages and affecting the typing on ever webpage. I tried to follow instructions on here on how to delete it but I can't find it on the activity monitor - there's nothing under any of the usual virus names!! Any help would be hugely appreciated - making using my macbook so stressful!!

  • Mackeeper

Has anyone had experience with MacKeeper?
I have, and I'd like to report my experience.
I am unsure whether it is necessary as a virus protection program. There are so few OSX viruses/trojans, and Apple seems to do a good job of keeping their upgrades safe from them. As a result, I don't enable MacKeeper on startup.
Therefore, I can report accurately only on a few contributions of the program. For me, they were worth it.
    1. Duplicates finder. After 2 years of heavy busines use, my 500GB drive free space was getting down to about 20GB, and everything from startup to Office loading was S-L-O-W. I recently ran the Duplicate finder module, and was stunned at the number of duplicate files found. I use a local backup and Carbonite for my Documents files, and store almost all my images and videos (I am in the medical communications/marketing business) on multiple external hard drives. After paging through the duplicates manually, I discovered that MacKeeper does a darn good job (near perfect - maybe perfect) job of figuring out where the orginal file belongs. So I ran it. It took many hours to run, but in the end, I recovered more than 70GB of space.
    2. Cleaning up caches, unused language features etc. - run routinely, works well.
    3. Undeleted file function - only tested - thank heavens, not needed in real life - but works well
I have run the virus/trojan finder, and on a few occasions, it did find a few - mostly Windows stuff (unimportant to me, because I don't dual-OS boot, but if I did, and the virus or trajan was resident on an external drive, it might be important. On a few occasions, it did find claimed Mac infections, which when Googled, were real. I have no idea if their removal was important or not. Some conspiracy theorists may claim MacKeeper introduces them so as to "find them," but since I believe Obama was born in Hawaii and is not a secret member of the Muslim Brotherhood, I don't buy into that theory.
I'd welcome any experience, confirmatory or contrary - not from people who are spooked by the way MacKeeper has bought triggers on many visited websites, but those with actual experience.

    Hello, Tom...
I am not a shill. That sounds a lot like a former president who denied being a crook, and was something worse. What I ***AM*** is managing director of ProClinica Inc., a consulting firm in the medical/pharma marketplace.
I bought into the MacKeeper virus argument because it seemed to me that, as OSX became more popular, and seeing the number of anti-Apple hacks jailbreaking iOS devices, it didn't take a Nobel Prize intellect to believe it would be interesting for some antisocial types to turn their focus to Apple.
I am pretty naiive to Mac. I was WIndows for decades until the advent of the iPad, which was the device I'd been trying to emulate with laptops for pharma reps calling on doctors. I then moved from Blackberry to an iPhone 4, and then, in late 2010, went over the wall to Mac. I am a business user, and frankly, am so Windows habituated that I use a Magic Mouse because with its right click, it makes a Mac "work" pretty much like a Windows computer (I find the Mac touchpad inscruitable). There are millions of us out there that don't have the interest to become experts in operating systems - one of the selling concepts for switching to Mac is that I didn't have to be running msconfig or system restore several times a week just to keep working on client assignments. I am accustomed to cleaning caches, and being wary of trojans - a friend who's been Apple-only since the late 70s got a trojan that's been spamming her address book, so I figured some kind of protection might be necessary.
I would very much appreciate recommendations from the cognicenti as to duplicate finder programs and any virus/trojan programs that pass muster.
I'm also in the market for a good iOS-OSX remote file transfer program, inasmuch as since 10.8.2, LogMeIn Ignition can no longer see my user/document folders (they are trying to determine why, but in the meantime, I'm searching for an alternative. Since installing a ZaggFolio keyboard on my iPad 3, I increasingly leave my MacBook Pro home and take just the iPad - with Dropbox being my hard drive in the sky, and CloudOn finally enabling me to deal with PowerPoints on the iPad, I'm planning to go to a iMac 27" for my office machine.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mel Snyder

  • MacKeeper...? Good or Bad?

    BAD. AWFUL. TERRIBLE.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR ASSOCIATE YOU'RE MACBOOK WITH ANYTHING RELATED TO MACKEEPER.
I was scanning through a regular website when a "pop up" link came up. It stated "Clean you're Mac" and the only option was "ok". If you're like me, you were scared to click ok, because you know.... Its a MacBook and its crazy expensive. I also have extremely personal info on my computer that I could not afford to get damaged. So... What did I do? At first I paniced... I'm an over anxious person so when I saw this whole thing I was completely shocked. So I tried to turn off my computer. It wouldn't work because the safari was still running... Whoever is behind this MacKeeper virus thing is one clever guy. Anywho, there are other options out of it. If you're uneducated like me (ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I'VE ONLY HAD MY MAC FOR 2 MONTHS!) the simpliest thing to do is use key commands. To FORCE safari to stop use command, control, esp. This ends safari. But whenever you open the darn thing, this tricky pop up window comes with it. Don't press ok. I do not trust MacKeeper in ANY way, and  like I said, if you love you're MacBook, MacKeeper is just asking for a whole bunch of trouble. So now you're stuck with this tricky pop up window. Yep, for now it hijacked you're safari. However, safari is a powerful browser. After a couple of hours and tries of me opening Safari and forcing it to stop this MacKeeper virus began to give up. So now I have safari back    I'm still remaining extra causious because the MacKeeper virus will stay on you're browser for awhile. Thats what I would think of course.
If you ever come across the MacKeeper website, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT. Thats my BEST advice. Think its 100% trustworthy? No. 50% of websites asking for you're computers permission to download them on the internet are not trustworthy. If you want to erase you're hard drive, make you're MacBook slow, and download random dangerous stuff to you're MacBook, be my guest. But MacKeeper is a devil, a tricky virus. I have heard things such as getting weird skype  calls, having MacKeeper download its self, and other mystic weird things.
SAVE YOU'RE MACBOOK, DO NOT GET MACKEEPER.
If you're really concerened, bring you're Macintosh computer into an apple store nearby you for help.

Check out my new page of what MacKeeper is!

  • How to solve that Microsoft Office 2011 error?

I am having a problem about Microsoft Office 2011. I can not open word, excel and powerpoint (any kind of windows office application)
When I just tried to delete mackeeper virus. I think I damage some of the Microsoft Office datas. I learned that virus files should delete from Launch Agent and Launch Deamons. Maybe I made a mistake on deleting files.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I believe I might have a virus on my mac.  Mackeeper shows up 4 times on my download listings but there is no icon on my applications tab.  Does this mean I have installed some sort of problem on my computer now?

Hello  Last night while watching a video on Facebook a pop up window said I had a virus and to clean it click on the link.  I did so and followed a prompt or 2 and then I thought this was a scam so I stopped.  However I looked at my download file and it shows Mackeeper listed 4 times.  Does this mean I have installed MacKeeper and if so does this mean I have installed some sort of malware/spyware or problems for my computer hence for myself.
    Thank you for your help
    Maureen

  • Mackeeper has detected a virus in the time capsule back up - it is not possible to dele - it ite the file. Do I find time capsule in finder and delete the whole computer back up, then crate a fresh back up? Is that the only solution please?

mackeeper has detected a virus in the time capsule backup, it is not possible to delete the infected file. Do I mount time capsule in finder and then consign to junk the whole computer backup then create a fresh backup? Is that the only solution please.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage. The overwhelming majority of Macs I come across have the MacKeeper installer file already present in their Downloads folder, often multiple copies of it. The downloaded file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper - not to be confused with MacKeeper) will prevent that from occurring.

i have a macbook pro and seem to have a bug/virus as mackeeper and other various websites keep popping up on my safari

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable word, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes the word is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the word something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same word you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

Do I have a virus on my Mac Air because I keep getting ads for MacBooster and MacKeeper?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.

You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I think I have a virus from Mackeeper.

Everything has slowed down and the Mackeeper page pops up every time I open a new page
How can I get rid of it? I can't find it in my apps.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you'd rather not remove it manually, you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.
Neither MacKeeper nor adware are viruses.

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
