Mackie Onyx 1620 Issues

Dear Forum
Im using a Mackie Onyx 1620 Firewire option and am having some issues with Logic 7
1) Sometimes the Computer doesnt reconise the desk and Logic will be playing back in the arrange window with no audio signal being received by the desk.
2) I plug in a mic - the desk registers a level but Logic doesnt after pressing flashing red record (and setting the audio record path)
Im very confused on to what to set up in my AUDIO MIDI options on the MAC, do i set all output and input via the firewire on the desk. Or System output to Apple Built in AUdio?
If you can help i would be very grateful
Thanks
Jonny

Thank you very much for your reply, and your time.
Although my desk has main stereo outs (outputs 1-2) AND main outs 3-4, my firewire set up only allows for one stereo return, so i guess because of this, in logic I am only offered the option 'Out 1-2' for each selected track.
ok, brainstorming here...
What if I connect my studio monitors directly to the compressors main outputs. Left speaker to the compressor output channel one, right speak to compressor output channel 2.
Then, run the main outs of the desk to the in's on the compressor.
Then to compare before/after effects of the compression settings, i just have to flick the bypass switch on the compressor unit ?
Then I would be left with the issue of recording the effected output. Perhaps I could do something in Logic like send the main stereo on a bus to a second logic stereo track and hit record?
I've over-thought this and im probably talking jibberish that makes no sense now - but if someone can please tell me if I'm way off track now or not? Thanks.
(and sorry about this lol).

  • I need help setting up a mackie onyx 1620 mixing console

I have just purchased a new iMac, and need to get the firewire working in Logic Pro 9. I have a Mackie Onyx 1620 Mixing console
    Any help

I almost fixed the problem I was having before by adding the proper domain to the search option in system preferences -> network. However I still have an issue.
I cannot get open directory/kerberos to work and as a result I cannot set up xgrid.
Could this be related to the fact that the ip of the system is attached to an external hostname (which is causing the hostname that might needed by local services to be overridden). I cannot change the fact that the external hostname is going to point to the system, but I was thinking that a possible solution would be to add a server layer above the head node of the grid to act as a router and accept this IP address / hostname override and prevent it from mucking up the hostname of the head node. Is this a viable idea and is it even necessary?
(This external domain name is a web-accessible site that is supposed to link in to a web service that will be provided by at least one of the servers on this grid setup, I'm not sure on the settings for that (it seems to work currently), but I'll worry about that when we get the rest of the system running.

  • Routing issues, Logic 8+Mackie Onyx 1620+Compressor rack

hey guys, I know the Logic apple forums may not be the most suitable place to post this, but I have tried a few more relevant websites to resolve this issue, but to no success.
With my set up, I connect my macbook straight to my mackie desk with one firewire cable, it allows me to send 16 signals and a stereo return down the one cable, then i monitor using KRK speakers attached to the desks main stereo outs at the back. So all straight forward there.
Today I received a TL Audio 5021 outboard compressor rack. For the life of me, I can't hook it up to my set up correctly for mastering. I want to master over-all mixes.
Its two channel. I have channel 1 output going into channel 9 on my desk. I have channel 2 output going in to channel 10 on my desk (line 9 and 10 share a channel strip on my desk, both using jack inputs for L and R). Then i have my desk's main out left going to the 5021's channel 1 input, and the desk's main out right going to the 5021's channel 2 input.
Obviously, with my set up, the more I turn up the main mix output, the more im feeding the channel i have the compressor inputed in to. So when i try to mute the main mix in logic to hear what im recording on 9-10, it all goes silent. Argh! That is very frustrating! I am not sure how i get around this?!
Is there some way of maybe changing the settings of the signal routing in logic to get around this?
I know this is probably all too confusing for you guys to work out without actually seeing the set up or being hands-on with it, but I am just a relative amateur in need of some guidance!
Many thanks for your time and patience in reading this and trying to help me!
    Steve.

  • Firewire disconnects using motu 828 mkii and Mackie ONYX 1620i. Why?

Having replaced my trusted MOTU 828 mkii as it kept disconnecting itself and needed rebooting including removal and replacement of the firewire lead, I have encounted the very same problem with the Mackie ONYX 1620i.
Interestingly it happened recently when I powered up a guitar amp in the same room the other day so I called my electrician friend to check out all the power outlets/sockets on the studio main. His comments were "no issues".
    - As there are no other gemlins associated to the power I put it down as coincidence but had to rule it out.
I have tried a multiple of firewire leads and had the same results.
The only firewire device that seems ok is a Behringer FCA 202!!!! (Embarrasing!) - I use this for stereo output only (to the same active monitors) and swap FW lead and Output Jacks when using each device.
This is with Macbook Pro (2010), Logic Studio 9, iTunes, etc. (all purchased products and same problem with ALL audio software).
Using Lion but was an issue with previous OSX.
    Certainly a head scratcher.
    Anyone had any similar issues?

    That's interesting. Thanks Benjy.
Please be sure to update here if you do encounter anything similar.
I cannot afford to replace my 'live' desk as well as another soundcard.
Plus, I really don't think I should have to - Mackie and MOTU are established and reputable device manufacturers and this seems to be an Apple issue.
    Apple?
Anyone else sncountered similar and found a resolution after advice from apple?

  • Compatibility Advice please: Mackie Onyx 1620i connect to Late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 Firewire to Thunderbolt

I'd like to buy a Mackie Onyx 1620i Firewire mixer/control surface for my home studio set up. I have a late 2012 iMac 10.8.5 with Thunderbolt connectors but no Firewire. I know that Apple provide a Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor but looking around online it seems people have had trouble getting these two pieces of kit to work together. I've read all the available info I can find online about running them.. re:correct serial number of the Mackie, the need for any drivers etc.. but doubt still hangs over the issue. Obviously I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on the wrong piece of equipment. Has anyone successfully run the Mackie Onyx and iMac described?.. or does anyone have sufficient expertise to deliver a definitive answer one way or the other? I'd be most grateful for any help.
    Thanks
    acolyte3

Based on my experience with the Onyx and two clients of mine who have had nothing but issues with it since day one... ... I cannot recommend it for use with a Mac....
As an example of the type of issue I am referring to.... Mackie released two hardware versions of the Onyx... The first version no longer works with modern versions of OS X.... and modern Macs.. and this can be identified by the serial number of the unit as shown on their Driver information page....
    http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxiseries/drivers/
For those with the first version.... Mackie left them 'high and dry' with no solution to their issues other than to buy the newer, second hardware version!
The second version.... again identified by the serial number.... has worked with OS X versions up to 10.8 but only for certain people.. Others have continued to report issues using the latest drivers and 10.8.5... and it does not appear to be supported for any version of OS X higher than 10.8.... which also means it doesn't work reliably with the more modern Macs which require 10.9 as a minimum OS X.
Based on these facts... again, I cannot and will not recommend this product for use with modern Macs and OS X versions.
Note: This is my personal opinion..... and others may have differing opinions depending on their own experiences with the product.

will mackie onyx 1220 firewire function in mountain lion

Hold on, I just went to double check myself... and I'm glad I did. It looks like the most recent drivers I could find are only compatible with OSX 10.8 assuming that your unit does in fact match these serial numbers.

You might want to do some more research before upgrading. Good Luck!

  • Recording with Logic and Mackie Onyx?

Has anyone an opinion about how well these
    new
Mackie Onyx mixers w/ the Firewire Card
perform working with Logic Pro 7?
    Specifically in terms of tracking
16 live channels simultaneously and getting
low latency as well as tracking out thru Logic
and the Mackie Onyx to a standalone CD-R for
    mixdown/mastering?

It was my understanding that the audio which passes through the firwire pipe (in or out) does not carry the channel strip information with it.
this means that for tracking, your EQ settings will be for reference only. and you will have to use logic to EQ your work, and be careful on the way back in for CD burning not to double EQ your work.
Seems like a great idea, but has a number of drawbacks.
why not get a presonus or similar interface with many inputs, and then distribute the control room signal with something like a big knob?
seems like a simpler, more direct and ultimately "higher fidelity" solution.
    imbmo anyhow...

  • Audio interface or Mackie Onyx Mixer w/ build in interface?

    Got a question,
I bought a Firebox audio interface a couple of weeks ago, and, a couple of days ago I stumbled across the Mackie Onyx boards which have the build in audio interface capabitily. Any suggestions on which one is better? As of right now, I do have an external mixer but looking to replace that. Does anybody have any suggestions on which route is better to go with? I could still return the Firebox.
    Thank you.

The Onyx preamps rate high, but your Firebox works well with Logic.
Maybe keep the Firebox, and get a Mackie MCU control for Logic:
    http://www.mackie.com/products/mcu/index.html
or wait until February when Mackie releases their Onyx 1200F box
Maybe the Firebox and MCU combo wins for now.

  • Mackie Onyx mixer

    Dear All,
I wonder how closely Mackie Onyx 1220i works with FCP and STP. Can we assign each track on the Mackie mixer to the audio track on FCP? If we move the sliders on the Mackie mixer, can we remotely control the track on FCP as well?
Lastly, can I use the Mackie mixer as a sound card through its firewire connection to hook up my Macbook Pro to XLR studio monitor, in my case, a pair of Adam A7X?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

anybody has any experience with connecting Mackie mixer to share, please?
    Thanks.

  • Mackie Onyx Mixer with Voice Over Tool

I have a Mackie Onyx mixer and am thinking about buying the firewire option card for it.
Has anyone used the FCP VO tool directly from an Onyx mixer? Mackie says it supports a lot of Mac OS apps including Garageband, however, I have not read that it supports FCP.
    Has anyone used this junxt?
    thanks-
    dk

Yes, give an outpoint BEFORE this extra audio on track 3 and 4 and you'll be good.
Obviously FCP decides which track it is going to send the Voice Over to at the momen't you start recording. Because it does not know how long you are going to record it will decide not to record on A3 or A4, because somewhere down the track there is some audio.
If you'll set an outpoint on let's say 6 minutes, you will know that you'll have plenty of time to do your 3 or 4 minutes voice over recording AND FCP will know that it will be OK to record on A3, because the recording will stop before it encounters other audio on A3 or A4.
    Hope this clarifies.

  • Mackie onyx 1640i digital mixer compatible with logic pro x??

I have a macbook pro 10.9.1. And was curious about purchasing a mackie onyx 1640i digital mixer. Is it compatible with logic pro x DAW?? Feed back would be much, much appreciated!

Well I got the 13 mackbook pro retina, mackie onyx1640i three days ago and havent got the onyx and the mac to talk to each other.  Problem is, mackie had a firewire 400 output and the Mac has a thunderbolt input.  So i guess you got to use adapters?  I have an old macbook pro and it does have a 400 firewire input.  I dont know what they were thinking, they need a 400 firewire and one end and a thunderbolt cable at he other.  Marco805

  • FireWire from iMac to a Mackie Onyx 1220 needs a driver?

I am running FireWire from my iMac to a mackie ONYX 1220 mixer. I shouldn't have to install any special drivers because the Mackie 1220 uses the core audio drivers of the iMac. Yet, I get no low frequencies coming from the speakers. When I unplug the FireWire mid song and then plug it back in, I get the full, beautiful sound I'm looking for for about 1 second. Then it goes back to only the high end frequencies.
Anybody have any answer for me? I took this mixer to a Mackie service center and there's nothing wrong with it. It works fine on other computers.
    Thanks, Tom

Hi, I imagine you've been there, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

If I  was to upgrade to mavericks from 10.6.8 will my firewire on mackie onyx 1220 still work in logic 9?

You need to check the FAQ section on their website - there is a link contained to check on compatibility. Here is an excerpt:
I would guess that it might not be supported in Mavericks, but contact them to make sure. The second problem is that it's been discontinued.

  • Mackie Onyx 1640 and Mac problems...

hey everyone, so im brand new to the Mac world, been a PC user for ages, i just got a 24" iMac. I'm trying to install the driver for a Mackie Onyx 1640 Firewire card, and i can't seem to figure it out. initially i tried to do it on windows parallels, which im using for some programs, i couldnt get any luck out of that, so i tried to install on the OSX, but that isn't workin either. anyone know what im doing wrong?

Hi and welcome to Discussions and the wonderful world of Mac,
according to the Mackie website you don't need to install specific Mackie drivers (there even aren't some).
Follow the steps in the manual of the Firewire card, especially the ones for the Audio- and MIDI-Setup and you should be ready.
Parallels is not capable at the moment for the use of FireWire, that's why it didn't work.
If you wnat/have to use Windows programs, you might consider BootCamp.
    Have Fun
    Stefan
