MacMail Not Searching "On My Mac" Mailboxes

I've recently upgraded to Lion, and imported all my various mail accounts and mailboxes. Somehow, when I search for a simple keyword, it does not search the mailboxes listed under "on my mac". Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Hoping for some help.
On another note, I also couldn't figure out how to change the search fields (i.e.: subject, from, to, etc...)

Hi,there I am in the same situation, did you find out how to solve the problem? I don't know what to do. So helpless!

  • Mail will not search in the "on my mac" folder

    Hi everyone,
I've been trying to come up with a useful solution to essentially archive messages from an email account that is no longer active. I would like to keep these messages searchable in Mail though. I thought if I put them in the "On My Mac" Saved Mail Folder, they would remain searchable, however it appears Mail is not searching this mailbox. Is it just me? It seems like the functionality exists. For example if I select the saved mail on my mac folder and then attempt to search for a message in that folder I have the option of searching All, Saved Mail on My Mac, Inbox etc. but no results from the mailbox appear in the search. Is there any way to change this so I am able to search messages in this folder? Thanks!

Hey thanks for the reply. My problem was solved by rebuilding the "on my mac" mailbox. Previously I was searching based on the title of an email that I knew was in the folder so I knew there was either a problem with my mail searching feature or it wasn't possible to search that folder.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.

  • Recently when I try to delete mail on my mac-mini I get the following message: The message "..." could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash - On My Mac" How can I delete mail?

My problem: When I try to delete an  email message I get the message - "The message “...” could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash — On My Mac.”
It appear that when I try to delete an email on my mac-mini a copy of the message goes to trash and I can delete it, but the original message stays in my regular list of emails. How do I get my Mail program to return to its normal delete function?

Back up all data. Rebuild the mailbox. Try again to delete the message.

  • My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments anymore

Does anyone know why this would be happening?
My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments most of the time.  When I enter some text in the search box no results come up and I know there are messages that contain the phrase that I've entered.
Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that.  So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal -  I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on.  As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

  • After deleting several email from my phone, it will not update in Mac Mail and shows message: Messages could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash"

Using Outlook account associated with work. Deletes on iPhone, but not in Mac Mail.  I do not have Outlook for Mac.

Does the Outlook account allow you to store deleted mails on server?
Look under trash and see if "Store deleted messages on the server" is checked

  • N8 does NOT Search within Calendars

    Rather disappointed today.
I have three calendars on my N8, shown in this order.
    Personal (empty, permanent, not used)
N95 (my former main calendar still full with relevant entries for the next months)
PC Suite (my current main calendar that synchs with PC Suite, not OVI)
I use the Search app not so often but when I do it saves me from grief. Today I tried to search for an entry entered (forgive my pun) on the N8 (so in the PC Suite calendar) and the results were nowhere to be seen. Tried multiple times with other entries but I only could find old entries from the N95 calendar.
I figured out the following: S^3 can search up to TWO calendars, the first two ones on the list as it seems, but my current one (PC Suite) camps out of the list and can't be moved up, neither the first empty one (Personal) can be swept away.
Has anyone come up with a solution ? The best thing I could think of is flattening the calendars with PC Suite desktop application (PC Synch) since the phone isn't able to do that. I haven't any assurance this might work though since PC Suite calendar was not a "user created" one.

I need to search words within archived mailboxes (.mbox files created with Mail 3.6). Spotlight seems unable to do searches there.
that's right and you can't make it search there. the only way to make a searchable archive that I know of is the following.
put the messages you want to archive in a local mailbox in "On my mac". now go to /users/username/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and copy the mailbox folder corresponding to the mailbox you've just made to a convenient location. You can now delete the mailbox you've made from inside Mail (not from finder) if you like. Spotlight will still search messages in the backup folder in the usual way and you'll be able to open those messages in Mail. also, if you need to you can import the .mbox folder back into Mail.

  • My mail will not work on my Mac (mountain lion) or connect to iCloud.

Since upgrading I cannot connect Mail to iCloud. In mail preferences the box, incoming mail server, is greyed out with the words"mail.example.com" I cannot change it yet I cannot save mail preferences because a message comes up that this box needs to be filled in. As well, I cannot connect to iCloud in system preferences despite changing my password. (All works on my iPad). In mail of course all my accounts are offline no matter what I do. I have upgraded many times (since OS 7) and this has been the worst. Ideas?

    Steve,
If the mail was moved to a mailbox under "On My Mac", it should no longer have any connection to the original mailbox. Deleting (delinking) the IMAP email account from Mac Mail should have no effect on that message.
In fact, I just confirmed that by adding an IMAP email account of mine to this Mac (which had not used it before), sending it a message from my phone, moving the message to an "On My Mac" mailbox, and deleting the account from Mac Mail. The moved message remains in the "On My Mac" mailbox. Re-adding the IMAP account to Mail makes the server mailboxes available again.
Note that the situation would be different for an account accessed through POP, depending on mail retention settings. Any mail which had been downloaded to your Mac, deleted from the server immediately of after a period of time, but left in Mac Mail's Inbox for that POP account, would truly be lost if you delete the POP account from your Mac. This may be the situation of which you were warned.

  • Error Message - Could not be moved to the mailbox "(null)"

The archive button in macmail will not let me archive an email using one of my IMAP accounts, making me think I accidentally deleted an Archive folder during setup.    I get the following error message. The message [subject] could not be moved to the mailbox "(null)".  The destination mailbox does not exist.
Each of my email accounts have an archive folder, except for my work account (Tecsg) which has a circle icon instead of the Archive box icon.
Any tips on how to fix this?

    So this worked for me...
    I found the answer here.
    Close Mail
    Go to /Users/<username>/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/
    Edit Accounts.plist
Make a backup of the file just in case
Find the following key-string pair under the account that you are having trouble with:
    <key>ArchiveMailboxName</key>
    <string></string>
Change the <string> tag value to your desired archive folder name, e.g.  Archive
    Save the file
    Reopen Mail
The Archive folder will now apear with the rest of your archive folders in the navigation area.
You can also add an archive button to the toolbar.

  • Mail - The mesage "subject" could not be moved to the mailbox trash

    Hello,
Suddenly, I started to receive an error message when I try to delete emails.:
"The mesage "subject" could not be moved to the mailbox trash - "account name" The operation couldn't be completed. File exists.
The strange thing is that sometimes, if I try again it does delete it, sometimes not.
    I didn't do anything, didn't change nothing.
I've repaired my permissions, restart my mac, nothing helps.
    any idea?
    thanks,
    shlomit

I've been having a similar problem off and on for months with my university's Exchange account. I've tried Mailbox > Rebuild to no effect and the only thing that provided an extended remedy was to delete the account and recreate it. This isn't a problem with an Exchange account but isn't so good for other types.
Anyway, I just realised that I'd been using the Rebuild command only on the Inbox and not on all the other folders within the account. I selected all the folders and then Mailbox > Rebuild and everything is working well again. I feel pretty stupid that I didn't think of it earlier.

System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

  • PS CC 2014 not showing up in Mac Finder after update

Just did the update/install of PS CC 2014, and while I can see the application in my applications folder if I do a spotlight search, it does not show up in Mac Finder when I go to my applications folder. Actually this is the case for several CC 2014 apps after the update. For example, Muse CC 2014 and InDesign CC 2014 show up in my applications folder, but not Illustrator CC 2014 or PS CC 2014. Anybody else experience this and/or have a resolution? I did a restart after the cc 2014 app updates to see if that would fix anything, but it didn't.
It's annoying to have to do a spotlight search to reinstall all my plug-ins and to just launch the app.

Craig, thanks for the reply, but it's not a matter of updating the dock icons after the update. I realize I need to drag the new CC 2014 apps to the dock if I want to access them there. It's more of an issue where all the CC 2014 app updates except Muse and InDesign weren't showing up in my HD > Applications folder where every other app on my machine resides. Instead, most of the CC 2014 updates got installed to my User > Applications folder for some bizarre reason. Those updates are the ONLY apps in that folder.
Anyone know why they would get installed there instead of the normal HD > Applications folder?

  • The messages could not be moved to the mailbox trash

    Hi there.
I bought an iPad 2 yesterday and I just tried to delete a couple of emails but it comes up with the following message: 'Unable to Move Messages. The messages could not be moved to the mailbox trash'
When you click 'OK' the selected emails do actually appear in the trash folder but when you delete them from there, the same message pops up and they immediately appear back in the inbox.
I've searched numerous forums for a solution but all people seem to say is 'empty your trash folder' but it is empty. I've got the same pop3 email account set up on my iPhone 4 and that works fine.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for help.

    Yes, that's true.

  • My Apple blue tooth keyboard will not pair with my mac mini

My Apple wireless keyboard was paired with my Mac Mini. It is no longer paired. I have put in new Batteries. I have pressed the button on the top right hand section of the keyboard, the green led lights up briefly. The Blue Tooth set up assistant appears on screen and searches for the keyboard. I has brifly seen it but does not make a connection. The Magic moose is doing the same thing.

    Hi Darrell,
If your Apple Bluetooth and keyboard are not paring to your Mac Mini, then take a look at the article below to walk you through some general troubleshooting to get it to pair and start working again. If you have not done so already, try looking form anything could be causing interference like cordless phones as well and thing metal between the keyboard and the Mac Mini.

  • Finder will NOT search current folder

I've searched online and the Apple Community for an answer but none correct my problem.
My Finder window will NOT search the current folder.  I have gone into Finder Preferences to ensure that SEARCH CURRENT FOLDER is chosen.  It is.  I have rebooted my computer and Finder, cleared the cache etc to no avail.  iMac 10.7.5 and  Macbook Pro  10.7.5
These are the instructions I'm following, which require a search on sub.
    http://www.webtechgadgetry.com/2013/12/mac-osx-tip-add-icloud-photo-stream-finde r-sidebar/
    ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub
When I type CMD + F, I only get a search on whatever folder was selected at the time I searched, not sub.  Ugh. Worked perfectly on my Macbook Pro.  Not so much on my iMac. Thanks in advance for you assistance.
Picture below:  Go to folder search
Next Pic: Search above finds sub folder and it is highlighted.
Next Pic: After  CMD + F, You can see in the search bar, SUB is not shown.

The folder is not indexed by Spotlight. Open the Spotlight preference pane and check the Privacy settings. If the folder, or a parent folder, isn't listed, add it to the list and then remove it to rebuild the index.
