MacMail won't stop trying to send an unsendable file

My wife, a .mac subscriber, recently tried to forward a huge PDF file to several addresses. For some reason the file cannot be sent successfully, but the program keeps trying, and although she has repeatedly tried to erase the file, turned the mail program off and on, turned the computer off and on, etc., every time she opens her Sent folder the little wheel starts turning to indicate that there's no quit in Mac land. What can she do?

Hi, I had this happen a while ago. Tried everything from within Mail - no dice.
Eventually I fixed it in Finder. First quit Mail or Force Quit if necessary. Then open a Finder window & go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox.mbox/Messages and delete the message. Re-open Mail and everything should be OK.
Good luck,
Adrian

  • My phone won't stop trying to send iMessages to a Blackberry user

My friend experimented with the iPhone 4S, but returned it a week later for another Blackberry.  Now my iPhone won't stop trying to send him iMessages.  I've tried deleting his contact info (from everywhere, including the iCloud), and re-entering it.  I've also tried deleting all previous text/iMessage conversations with him.  Restoring, resetting, etc.  Nothing has worked.  Any thoughts/suggestions?

You don't have much choice, do you? You're either going to have to restore the software or take it to the Genius Bar to see about getting that button fixed.

  • Mail won't stop trying to send!

I tried to send a short video and I guess it was not a valid format for mail to send in or it was to big? But now everytime I open up mail it automatically tries to send and send (volleyball spinning) until it stops and abruptly quits the whole program. Of course while the spinning is going on I can't get into the drafts folder, where I believe the vid is, to delete it. I can't move the coursor, can't get into preferences, or into any other app at all untill the spinning stops and the app quits by itself. Because of this I can't use mail so I got so frustrated that I eventually just deleted the whole app and told myself I would just reinstall it. Instead of reinstalling the whole OS I used a shareware program called Pacifist which lets you install specific apps from the DVD. I finally installed mail again and once again to my demise it open up and immediately started to try to send or got caught up on this "bad file" froze and finally quits like always. I've done disc repair, I've gone to my mailboxes on the web and tried to delete this file or whatever it is and it's not on my web mail. Webmail works fine but everytime I open up mail it does the same thing. Basically i can't use it. Is there a way to have mail stop trying to send/recieve/read files so I can delete whatever is keeping the Volleyball spinning or I'll just be fine deleting all of my e-mail and starting all over again with a bare bones mail app? Please help!

Any message that isn't successfully sent remains in the Outbox mailbox and this is why the Mail.app continues to try to send it when re-launched.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the problem message.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.
Since you re-installed the Mail.app from your Panther install discs using Pacifist and unless your Panther install discs include 10.3.9, you need to download the 10.3.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.3.9 to get the Mail.app to the current version as of 10.3.9 if your OS version details are accurate.
What was or is the size of this video attachment?
All email attachments must be encoded before the message is sent which increases the size of the pre-encoded file. The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding which is the internet standard. As a general rule, MIME encoded binary file attachments are approximately 150% of the size of the original pre-encoded file. If the pre-encoded size of this video file was/is 5 MB, the encoded size will be roughly 7.5 MB or even larger.

  • Attachment to large but mail won't stop trying to send

By mistake I attached my 212mb 'public' folder to mail. Obviously it wouldn't send but it keeps trying to and failing. I now can't delete the message and stop mail from sending.
How can cure the problem as the program has now seized.

I am having a similar problem but its not the that the email is invalid due to attachment size, but because the SMTP details are no longer working. OK, but there should really be a much shorter timeout period. I would like to try to send the email using a different account.
Even when I take it offline I still can't stop it. Its just a real pain. Apple what are you doing?

  • Trying to send a huge file from on Mac to another

I am trying to send a 16gb file from my mac OSX panther to a mac OSX tiger. I prefer to do this as easily as possible, rather than as quickly as possible. I am about to rip my hair out as I really need to free up some space on this computer and for some reason can't figure out this, I'm sure, simple process.

Hello Again! What you you do is use Firewire Target Disk Mode. This connects the two with a firewire cable so you can do a straight disk to disk transfer.
This link will show you how to do it.

  • The Archive Utility won't stop trying to unarchive

    hi there,
i downloaded a zip drive yesterday and the unarchive utility won't stop. i pressed cancel, and the cancel button greyed out. i've gone to force quit and it doesn't do anything. i've tried to shut down the computer and it says the shut down was canceled by the archive utility. any suggestions?\
    thank you!

try killing the process from Activity monitor.
if that doesn't help kill the loginwindow process that belongs to your user using Activity monitor. this will force an immediate user logout. if all else fails hold the power button to force a shutdown.

  • Ipod won't stop trying to turn off.

As the title says, My Ipod touch will not stop trying to turn off.
I held down the power button, then slid the key to turn off.
Now it has that small circle in the center that spins usually indicating that its processing, working, thinking, etc. and it will not just turn off.
    Please help

    1. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    2. Restore using iTunes, also restoring a backup
    3. Restore as new, without using a backup
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    4. If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware problem that needs evaluation by Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.

  • Trying to send large video file...

I am trying to send a quicktime video file via my mac mail. When I try to send I get error that says my server only allows files 29.6mb and smaller. How do I send larger files (the one I want to send is 58.6mb)

I did some digging, and if you aren't scared of Terminal.app, and the recipient on the other end is a Mac guy (or gal) and is not afraid of Terminal.app, there is a built-in unix utility that will do what you want.
To learn all about it, type man split
As an example of how to use it, suppose you have a big file called "Movie.mov" that is in your Movies folder. cd ~/Movies to change directories to your Movies folder. Then type split -b 4m Movie.mov movseg
This will purportedly take the file "Movie.mov" that is in your home directory's Movies folder, and split it into multiple files movsegaa, movsegab, movsegac, ...., not one file segment exceeding 4 MB (the "-b" option is segment size in bytes and can be a plain number or append a k for kilobytes or m for megabytes, the latter as in this example).
Now you can email each segment as an attachment in its own unique email message.
The recipient should download all the attachments to the same place (to make it easy) and cd to that directory. Then type
cat movsegaa movsegab movsegac {list of remaining movseg-- filenames separated by spaces} > Movie.mov and it rebuilds the original "Movie.mov" file.
I didn't try this with a movie file, but I did try it with a 140MB ".tgz" file and with a small text file. The MD5 checksum of the original and the reconstructed files were identical and I was able to uncompress and unarchive the .tgz file with no problem, and could open and read the reconstructed text file with no problem. You'd probably want to "trial" the reassembly yourself before emailing all of the file segment attachments, though.
The only problem -- if your recipient isn't a Mac user, I don't think Windoze command line supports these two commands.
Also, if your file is really really big and the automatically generated file segment name suffixes aa-zz (26 x 26 possible files segments) isn't enough to handle the total number of file segments that you'll need to fit through the email servers, include a " -a 3 " option either just before or just after the "-b {segSize}" option to make filename suffixes aaa-zzz (26 x 26 x 26 possible file segments -- your recipient will love you!) One could put together a unix script pretty quickly to rebuild a gazillion file segments into a reconstructed copy of the original, though.
PS - your .mac account may allow you to send a file attachment as large as 29.6MB, but many email providers only allow their customers to receive files up to 10MB in size, and some are even more draconian than that, imposing a 5MB limit (two local universities immediately come to mind). They will reject the attempted inbound delivery and you, the sender, may or may not get notification of that event from the recipient's server. So be sure to follow up with another email asking if the recipient received the "N" email attachments and did (s)he get the file reassembled okay.

  • I am trying to send a large file and it takes over 15 hours and still doesnt send the complete file

I am sending a large file over the internet to Graphistudio. When i try and send the file it tells me it is going to take 19 hours. when i have sent these files in the past it has never taken this long. when it does finish sending it doesnt even send all the file and bits are missing.

What method or app are you using to send the "large" file with?  Emails, for instance are often limited to 35 or 40 MB's maximum size by the ISP provider.  You would need to use an FTP setup to send a larger file.   And what is the size of the file in MB's or GB's?  You might check out the following free FTP Apps for Mac:

  • Mail won't stop attempting to send message after 3 days

Greetings.  My wife's iPhone 4 has been attempting to send a large message via Mail for the past 3 days.  I'd like to stop the message since it's clearly not going to be sent.  I've tried turning the phone off and on, but to no avail.  The "Edit" box in the upper right corner is unavailable.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks so much and have a great day.

Have you tried deleting the message from the Outbox?
Restarting or resetting the device will never stop an email from sending.  The only way to stop it is to delete the message or remove and re-add the email account.

  • ITunes match won't stop trying to download songs

    iOS 6 on iPhone 5
I set up with iTunes match and set it to sync one of my playlists. That playlist has 800 songs.
It started downloading the playlist. It was sloooooow, using phone data, even though I set it to use wifi and updated my carrier settings, until I set to not download over cellular data (it seems to try cellular BEFORE wifi for some reason).
800 songs are taking a LONG time to download.
During this time, I have received a number of app update notification, so I went into the app store and selected "update all".
It now won't update Apps as I believe it is waiting for the playlist to finish downloading before getting to the apps.
I turned off iTunes match and deleted all the music on the phone, but there seems to be no way to stop it from trying to download the entire playlist still, even with Match turned off.
I have received notifications from apps that are stuck in the "waiting"stage of the update, but cannot access the app to check the message.
Surely if it is forced to wait for music to finish downloading it should inform you that it can't start the app sync OR it should prioritize app updates over music.
I don't want to reset and start all over again as I am sure I will lose the content of the notification (a chat via skype) and I am missing important business information while it finishes downloading the music.
    Any suggestions?

I've just found other posts like mine on the rignt side of the screen and have found the solution: Simply by desactivating iCoud in Preferences System and loging in again and now Calendar works fine.

  • IPhone 5 won't stop trying to install certain apps.

I have my iPhone 5 set to sync everything to my home computer, a Mac Mini.  I went on vacation for 10 days, and upon my return, plugged my iPhone into my Mac Mini for the first time in 10 days.  Upon syncing, it suddenly counted 179 apps as "new" and tried to sync them all to my iPhone.  (These were all apps that I had downloaded in the past, but had all been previously removed from this iPhone and only existed in my iTunes library.  Why it suddenly decided to put them all onto my phone at once and without prompting, I have no idea.)  My iPhone is currently low on free space, so it only manages to download 5 or 6 of these 179 "new" apps and then stops syncing due to low space.
Now I have a nightmare problem.  I've tried 3 separate times to manually delete all of these "new" apps from my phone (hitting the "X" in the corner of each app, then confirming the deletion...179 x 2 = 358 touches.  Wheee.)  However, upon the next sync with my computer, all these apps are re-added.  (I've tried de-selecting the "automatically install new apps" option in the iTunes App sync screen....same problem occurs.)  Furthermore, I CANNOT delete them from the iTunes App interface, as the little X's for some reason do not appear in the corners of most of these "new" apps.  (This is probably due to the fact that most of them have empty progress bars, since I have no room to install all these apps.)  So, I'm stuck with 179 apps filling up my iPhone's free space with empty progress bars and no way to get rid of them.
I've thought about restoring my phone from an old backup, but it's currently set to back up to iCloud....as I understand it, if I were to factory reset my phone and then restore from this iCloud backup, it would only restore the "important" settings (i.e. not the full "backup to computer" option).  Any suggestions?  I'll update this problem when/if I find a solution.  Thanks.

UPDATE: when I selected 10.9.1 to boot into I received an error about the boot record on the hard drive is a problem. But disk utility isn't available to me via the recovery disk.

  • 10.1.0.4181 won't stop trying to load, and now the Calendar won't sync

Hello, my Q10 upgraded to 10.1.0.4181.
    1) BB Link trying to upgrade and it's already done.  I turned off the auto upgrade but that hasn't fixed it.
    2) Now my local Calendar entries won't sync to Outlook. I restored from the backup taken just before the upgrade, but still no calendar entries.  I don't want to put my private info on the cloud.
I've read other threads on issues with 10.1.0.4181 but haven't seen anything on how to fix my device.  Any suggestions?
