Macmini 2.7ghz i7 best HDD configuration?

Hi there,
just got my new Macmini 2.7ghz i7 with a 750gig 7200rpm hd and 8gig's of Ram.
Got a geek bench score of 7570, so its going to be a heck of a lot faster than my old G5 iMac i-sight.
I want to know the best way to set the Macmini up regarding hard drives.
With Thunderbolt HD's just around the corner i am thinking of getting one of these
http://www.lacie.com...ct.htm?id=10549
when they come out, and run the audio from one of the ssd's ( the Little Big Drive has 2 SSD's inside ) and the Logic project from the other ssd and run the Logic app from the internal drive.
With Thunderbolts very fast speed i could imagine this would work well.
I have seen several threads on the web of people running the project on a seperate drive from the app and audio and samples on yet 2 other drives.
What are your thoughts on this?
Also now that the MINI can have 2 internal drives, what about having the App and project on the boot drive and running the audio on the other? and samples on an external drive?
and backing up onto another external drive?
Another question is will a SSD help more with the boot drive or the audio/ sample drive?
I could go all out money wise and get 2 internal SSD's and a Lacie little big drive with its 2 SSD's.
I know SSD's are really expensive for now, but the speed that they run on video's on Youtube are amazing. Would they have a big advantage over HDD's when using Logic 9?
Thanks for any help. tOM

Well… it's a matter of opinion but I would say that the Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500GB drives will perform the best, the Western Digital RE 320GB will be the quietest/coolest and the Seagate 320GB rather unknown.
I don't know why you couldn't just put the 4 x 500GB drives in in say 2 RAID 0 pairs and be done with it. Then you could put the 2 WD drives into a RAID 0 external enclosure. as a backup drive.

  • Best RAM configuration for Macbook (mid 2007)

Hi, I have a Macbook (mid 2007) with 1 GB ram and I would like to upgrade. Currently I have 2x512MB, so both of my memory slots are taken. Is it a good idea to have one 512MB card and a 2GB card in the other slot? Otherwise, what is the best RAM configuration for a mid 2007 macbook?
I am also looking into purchasing this memory card for my macbook, is this a good choice?

Yes, I read the figure 128 in regards to the benefit. Something about interleaving, maybe?
In doing a Google search for that article I saw, I found this:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/99215-4gb-ram-my-macbook.html
the maximum amount of RAM your laptop can take is 3.3GB. So while you can physically insert 4GB of RAM, OS X will only be able to see 3.3GB of it.
But I don't know how knowledgeable that poster is who says it can utilize 3.3 GB. I do know that the full 4 GB shows up in the System Profiler on my MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz.

    Loyalty functionality in sales order
    Solution
Please read the documentation below Setup for Integration of Sales Order with Loyalty for CRM 7.0 You can use this note to integrate the loyalty application with sales order to allow customers to earn reward points on purchase of products, redeem points and buy point products. To enable the above-mentioned functionality, the following set up has to be carried out in the system: -> Product master data You have to add SetType REWARD_PRO_LOY (created for product type Material) to the product category. You may create a new product category for loyalty products. You can add the settype to a product category using the following steps: 1. Use transaction COMM_HIERARCHY
    2. Search for the category to be used for loyalty products
    3. In the SetTypes tab under Category Data, add REWARD_PRO_LOY as the settype After the settype is added to the loyalty product category, it will appear as point information assignment block in the product overview page. Here, you can maintain point information for Accrual, Redemption and Buy Points scenarios. You have to select the Scenario, Point Type (Points, Miles etc) and enter the associated number of points. The following three activities are supported: -> Accrual
In this scenario, a customer buys standard products and earns reward points for his purchase. The actual points to be accrued will be maintained at product master data level.  You have to select EARN as the loyalty scenario. Example: We have a product, Laptop T 61, which has 1000 reward points associated with it, at the product master level. If a customer buys this product a member activity will be created and 1000 points will be credited to his account. Note: You can maintain points for a product with a particular loyalty scenario in the point information assignment block of product overview page. -> Redemption
In this scenario, a customer redeems his points to buy products. In CRM 7.0, redemption products have 100% discount and can be bought only by points. The point value of such products will be maintained at product master data level in point information assignment block. You have to select REDEEM as the loyalty scenario. Example: We have a keyboard HT-1010, which has a price of 5000 points (and 100% discount). If a customer buys this product, a member activity will be created and 5000 points will be deducted from the customer's account. -> Buy Points
This functionality enables a customer to purchase points. The point value of such products will be maintained at product master data level under the point Information assignment block. You have to select BUYPOINTS as the loyalty scenario. Note:
Point information is maintained for 1 base unit of product .If the quantity and unit of measure are changed, the points will be calculated accordingly.
-> Customizing in SPRO You have maintained the following customizing settings in SPRO:
-> In the customizing activity Define Point Types for Sales-Order Integration, you maintain point types. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide   Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Loyalty Management - Design  Channel Integration  Define Point Types for Sales-Order Integration Point Information in product master can be maintained only for these point types.
-> In the customizing activity Define Categories and Types for Sales Order Integration, you maintain member activity category, activity type, sales order status for which activity will be created and the processing delay ( Process On Hold) for a particular loyalty scenario. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Loyalty Management - Execution  Member Activities  Define Categories and Types for Sales Order Integration
-> In the customizing activity Define Transaction Types, you maintain the transaction types for accrual, redemption and buy points. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Transactions  Basic Settings  Define Transaction Types Note:
Reference transaction types LTAA, LTAR and LTAB are delivered for CRM IC and UIU. For web channel, transaction types ISLA, ISLR and ISLB are delivered. You can create new transaction types on project basis but transaction classification should be maintained as A, R and B for accrual, redemption and buy points transactions respectively. For redemption transaction LTAR, the item category is LTAR where the pricing process is maintained as 100% discount. Therefore, the net value will always be 0 for redemption items and only points will be charged. You have to maintain the condition 0R10 in pricing procedure. The pricing procedure 0CRM01 contains the details of condition 0R10. If you do not maintain 100% discount, then additional currency price will be displayed. For example, $200 + 100 MILES. Billing and delivery related customizing has to be done on a project basis. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Setup for Integration of Sales Order with Loyalty in EhPx for CRM 7.0 You can use this note to integrate the loyalty application with sales order to allow customers to earn reward points on purchase of products, redeem points and buy point products.
This is an optional activity. In many cases, the points accrued will not be maintained in the product master data but will be determined based on reward rules. In such cases, you do not have to maintain the SetType. -> Buy Points
This functionality enables a customer to purchase points. The point value of such products will be maintained at product master data level under the point Information assignment block. You have to select BUYPOINTS as the loyalty scenario. This activity is mandatory for Buy Points scenario.
Note:
Point information is maintained for 1 base unit of product .If the quantity and unit of measure are changed, the points will be calculated accordingly. Redemption functionality in Ehp1 for CRM 7.0 In case of redemption, you have three payment options to choose from. You choose the payment option in the customizing activity Define Mixed Payment for Sales Order Integration. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide   Customer Relationship Management  Marketing   Loyalty Management  Channel Integration  Define Mixed Payment for Sales Order Integration a) Fixed redemption value from Product Master
The point information will be picked from the SetType as explained above and 100% discount will be given at item category level. Attached is the screenshot of the same. Using Pricing Process, you can select whether normal pricing is executed or 100% discount is given. In addition to the above-mentioned setting, a 100% discount condition should be included in the pricing procedure. For this purpose, you can use the standard condition 0R10 in the pricing procedure. b) Mixed redemption using Conditions and IPC With Ehp1 for CRM 7.0, mixed payment functionality is available. This enables a consumer to pay with points and money in a single sales transaction. You can maintain point prices as conditions in product master data under the Prices assignment block. The condition type
0LM1 with condition tables SAP002, 003 and 004 are used to maintain these point conditions as seen in the screenshot below. Select the option '0LM1_LM_SAP002' from the dropdown. Select 0LM1_LM_SAP002 from the dropdown. In the above screenshot, Price in Points = 100% point price , Max Price in Points = maximum points a consumer can spend, Min Price in Points = minimum points a consumer should spend for this product. Note:
In the above scenario, entries in Point Information assignment block will not be considered for redemption but the information will be picked from the conditions. A new usage LM is developed for points as conditions. You can use the customizing activity Condition Technique: Basics to develop condition tables, access sequences, condition types and point procedures.
For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide   Customer Relationship Management  Master Data  Conditions and Condition Technique  Condition Technique: Basics You can create condition objects with application CRM and usage LM. The point procedure 0LM001 is delivered and can be used in a sales transaction using the below the customizing Determine Point Procedures. Point information will be fetched by executing this procedure. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide   Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Loyalty Management  Channel Integration  Determine Point Procedures You can assign this point procedure to a particular sales org, distribution channel, division, customer pricing procedure and document pricing procedure the same way it is done with pricing procedure. If you decide to use only points in a sales transaction (consumer has to pay 100% point price always), a standard pricing procedure with 100% discount would suffice. If you want to allow mixed pricing, for example, a consumer can pay anything between 1000 to 2000 points and rest in currency, then condition type 2902 (point based discount) should be included in the pricing procedure and 100% discount should not be chosen at item category level as explained above. The conversion rate between points and currency can be maintained in CRM UI in the following manner:
    1. Go to Loyalty Management
    2. Select Prices
    3. Choose 2900 as the Price Maintenance Group
Attached is the screenshot of the same. Here 1 USD is maintained as 1 point. Product specific conversion rates are also allowed. Condition type 2901 is the reference condition type for 2902 and 2903 (used in flexible order and is described later in the section flexible order). Scales can be maintained for the conversion rates. For example, for the first 1000 Points it is 0.5 USD per point. From 1000 to 2000 points, it is 0.75 USD per point and from 2000 points onwards, it is 1 USD per 1 Point Example of Sales order Here, a product TV-1000 is maintained with Point price as 1000 Miles and Min Point price  as 500 miles and Max point as 1000 Miles. A consumer purchases this product using a redemption transaction and spends 500 points. With a conversion rate of 1 USD equal 1 point, the net value becomes 500 USD + 500 Miles. If consumer spends 1000 Miles, the net value will be 0 USD + 1000 miles. Similarly, various combinations of maximum price and minimum price can be maintained in Product master and accordingly consumer can use his points to redeem products. c) Mixed payment using Flexible order If you do not wish to maintain point prices for individual products due to high volume of products, specifically in retail, then they you select this option where during the checkout, consumer will be given the option to use his points. Discount will be given based on the points spent at an item level. In this case, the only thing you have to maintain is a fixed conversion rate (condition type 2901). The transaction type will be the same as accrual. For example, a consumer purchases a product HT-1000 on which he can earn 1000 special points. During checkout, he will be asked to use his points. Use Point Payment will be enabled, and he can enter points he wants to redeem. If he decides to use 500 points, then a discount will be given to him based on the points spent. Here, with a conversion rate of 1 USD equal to 1 point, 500 USD discount will be given and accrual information will be lost. Hence, the points spent will be equal to 500. Discount Based on Member Basic and Lifetime Tiers In accrual transactions, discounts can be given to members who have reached a particular tier (Basic and Lifetime tiers). This can be maintained as a condition using the following steps:
    1. In CRM UI, go to Loyalty Management
    2. Select Prices
    3. Choose 29MD as the Price Maintenance Group
Here, we can maintain the percentage discount on a product for a particular basic and lifetime tier. The condition type 29MD should be included in the pricing procedure of sales transaction to provide discounts. In sales order processing, you can check the discount under the assignment block Price Totals on the overview page. In this case, a 2% discount is given based on the above condition as shown in the third row) Generation of Billing Documents Once a sales order is created and saved, you can generate a billing document as a follow up activity. For loyalty sales transactions, the following three new fields are added to the billing document.
    -> Points
    -> Point type
-> Points spent In Accrual and Buy Points scenarios, Points = Points accrued; Point type = Miles, points etc; Points spent = 0 In redemption scenarios, Points = Total point price; Point type = Miles, Points etc; Points spent = points spent by the consumer To generate billing document from a sales order, you have to select a relevant billing option for the item category. In this case, we have selected Transaction-Related Billing According to Order Quantity. The billing will happen via CRM Billing.
Note: Only CRM Billing is currently supported
As billing will happen only if the order is replicated successfully to ERP (where shipping, delivery and logistics will be done), you have to ensure that all the master data, for example, products, BP (sold to party), conditions, etc are present in ERP along with the transaction type and item category (for example, LTAA and LTAN). Once replication is complete, we can create a billing document from the sales order overview page. Select Create Follow-up and choose Billing. -> Customizing in SPRO You have maintained the following customizing settings in SPRO:
-> In the customizing activity Define Point Types for Sales-Order Integration, you maintain point types. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide   Customer Relationship Management  Marketing   Loyalty Management  Channel Integration   Define Point Types for Sales-Order Integration Point Information in product master can be maintained only for these point types.
-> In the customizing activity Define Categories and Types for Sales Order Integration, you maintain member activity category, activity type, sales order status for which activity will be created and the processing delay (Process On Hold) for a particular loyalty scenario. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Loyalty Management  Member Activities  Define Categories and Types for Sales Order Integration
-> In the customizing activity Define Transaction Types, you maintain the transaction types for accrual, redemption and buy points. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Transactions  Basic Settings  Define Transaction Types
    Note:
-> In the customizing activity Assign Product Hierarchy for Sales Order Integration, you register the product hierarchy if it is not the same as sales operation hierarchy. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Loyalty Management  Channel Integration  Assign Product Hierarchy for Sales Order Integration This customizing will help you create reward rules based on product categories and process them during creation of member activity using sales order. -> In the customizing activity Determine Pricing Procedure, you maintain 29CRLM as the pricing procedure for loyalty transactions. For more information, see SAP Customizing Implementation guide  Customer Relationship Management  Marketing  Business Functions  Pricing  Pricing in the Business Transaction  Determine Pricing Procedure For more information please refer to the attachment and IMG Documentation.

  • Best Raid Configuration for a 8-1tb hhd server

    Hi All,
I have been trying to figure out what would be the best raid configuration for my Windows 2012 essentials server. So I was wondering if I could get some advise on this. Here is what I would like to get out of this configuration.
I would like to split the 8-1tb drives into 2 VHD one with about 300gb for the OS to be installed on, and the rest to be use  for storage. I want like to have good redundancy, fairly good read & write capabilities.
I will be using this server for a Small Web Page and Game Hosting, Email Exchange, Critical Application hosting.
I would like the ability to enlarge the overall raid storage by swapping out my 1Tb drives with 2Tb or larger as the need for more storage arises.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

You may be better of using Storage spaces and not using raid at all.

    HI,
For your home testing you might need a latest technology to get a smooth and fast installation. i7 processor might be the ideal with memory at least 8GB. if you're planning to have more than 3 VMs running at the same time than you need 12-16GB memory at least.
From my experience installing on vm and allocated memory 2.5GB each VM the installation could take 15-30minutes

  • What is the best RAID configuration for a MacPro as a Logic User?

There ought to be a universal answer to this question: what is the best RAID configuration for Logic Mac Pro users? I will be more specific.
I use Logic Studio, Reason, Ableton, and Motu Symphonic Instrument simultaneously.
I want to fail safe my precious audio files and improve performance as the system reads/writes data from multiple files, from audio tracks to digital samples.
I want to run video files simultaneously to do nifty audio soundtracking to video.
Here is the configuration I have in mind.
HD 1: OS and Logic Studio, Reason/Ableton samples etc. software (non-raid) (250 GB)
HD 2/3: MIrrored RAID set for AUDIO FILES (500 Gb identical pair)
HD 4: Video files / Bouncing (1 TB)
Makes sense right? A disk for reading software. A pair of 500 GB disks for reading/writing audio files and sessions in mirrored array. A 1 TB disk for video and bouncing. The main question I have is, for audio files only, is striped or mirrored better? 64K blocks the best? And are there any more details. I assume to do this in Disk Utility.

Well, both Mirrored and Striped have their pros and cons. If you use mirrored, it will offer no better performance than the spec'ed drive along with it's sata bus speed. The plus point is, if one drive goes down, you have the second as a backup as the complete contents of one drive are mirrored on the other.
With striped you will get a performance boost because all files (for example a single project) will get written across both drives and hence split the load on the drives and the SATA busses. The drawback is that you'll have to make sure you have a good, regular backup schedule in place because when one of the drives goes to drive heaven, you're going to be stuffed without a full backup of both drives.
Exactly what performance boost you'd get will depend on your project, number of files, size of files, fragmentation of files, track count etc. You may find it would be easier to use the 3 drives straight, with no raid and have:
HD 1: OS and Apps. No samples at all.
HD2: Audio Files for Logic projects
HD3: Reason, Ableton, Logic etc instrument sample library
    HD4: Video and bouncing.
Which is what I ended up doing although I use HD4 as an interchangeable backup for HD1 and 2.
There is no universal answer to this as each must make their own choice based on their preferences and needs. Mirrored will give you full backup but on-site, in machine backup. Not much good if something untoward and drastic happens to the physical machine. I think a few people toy with striped RAID but fall on the side of using the drives straight, as in their projects they don't see a big enough gain over splitting the data across your 3 remaining drives without RAID. Studios that seriously consider raid often go out and get a dedicated raid that can offer more variations than raid 0 or raid 1 (Striped and Mirrored) and better throughput.
I hope this helps a little and not just added to the dilemma.

for weblogic Express 8.1 and the server has about 4G RAM ?This is way too much for a single weblogic instance. Normally 512-1024Mb

    16 Gb RAM 1600 mHz (4*4Gb)
    Inno 3D Nvidia GTX 580
I have 5 HDD in my system. What is the best way for Premier pro CS5.5 for this HDD's?
    HDD 1 Kingston V200 256Gb SSD
    HDD 2 Hitachi 1Tb 7K1000 7200 rpm SATA 3*2 (RAID 0)
    HDD 3 Hitachi 1Tb 7K1000 7200 rpm SATA 3
    HDD 4 Hitachi 1Tb 7K1000 7200 rpm SATA 3
HDD 5 Western digital 2Tb 7200 rpm USB 3.0 (External)

    DeePeeeBee,
Very well explained, exactly the type answer I was looking for, so thank you for that.
On the IDE por of my MB, how do I get a SATA disk connected? a IDE to SATA converter cable? Sorry but IDE has not been in my way for a very long time.
I will defenetly post my results here and how I did it when done, hopefully other can benefit from my results.
So this is my current hardware set up and expecting to have time to put together by the weekend, ( actually the system has been running for more than a year now but I needed an upgrade specially for my HDD and monitors )
    Graphic Card:
Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 VCQFX4800 ( I do not see many people saying good thing about this card except for expensive but I am very happy with the real time playback and the rendering time of this card)
    CASE:
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Steel ATX Full Tower ( Best case I have ever could buy 5 stars for me )
    Board:
    EVGA X58 FTW3 132-GT-E768-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
(Board is almost 2 years old but it is excellent board )
    RAM:
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 24GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
(Could have been better but I guess my budget was limited top that, also being used right now and performance is pretty good for me)
    CPU:
    Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core
(At the time was my best choice since I could not aford a extreme edition cpu, I ma very happy with it so far.)
    Cooler:
COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle (I hope I can find this cooler around when I buy for my next system, I may not need air conditioning in my studio, this cooler and the tower in conbination can only run at the lowest temp you can imagine, I have not noticed any warm air blowing out of my case, this is not real...I just have to say WOW!!! Love it)
HDD: 2 x Velocity Raptors 600GB 10K ( will use the Marvell chip for RAID 0 and will use this drive for media ... Capture, re-usable clips, sound, music and other pre-done effects and template for After effects, Encore audition and PS)
HDD: 3 x 1TB WD Caviar Black 7200 RPM ( Will use as RAID 0 on Intel chip, will be used
for output files, media cache for all adobe aplications and previous files )
HDD: Intel 120GB SSD drive version 520 ( will only have OS win7 and Adobe CS5.5 or maybe CS6 if I can soon budget an upgrade, MS Office and Roxio for ISO files and virtual drive)
    Display:
2 x 22" Gateway Wide screen max resolution at 1650
(Getting these brand new and hopping they are a good choise)
    Will post back.

  • 7200- Best OS Configuration/ Internet Configuration

    Hi all,
I have a PPC 7200/90 that i just restored and i am trying to optimise to its best prefrormance level. This machine is my Classic gameing workstation for all my favorite system 7 games that dont run on the OS X ubermac ( extremly upgraded G3 266). I mainly run games like Wolfenstine (best game ever) and Lemmings. I also use it for clarisworks, and i am trying to get it up on the internet for AOL Instant Messager. First of all i want to get the best System 7 OS for it loaded on there. The Current Version is 7.6. Should i upgrade to 7.6.1?, or go to 7.5? My current specs on it are: 90 mhz PPC 601 Processor, 128 MB of Ram, 4 gig HDD, Radius PCI Video Card with a Radius Precision Color/17 Display, 8x External SCSI CD Burner, and a 28 to 32kbps US Robotics Mac & Fax dial up modem. I am having trouble getting it on the internet though, i plugged in th dial-up name and password and phone # int PPP and Remote Access, and tryed connecting from both. the both connect to it and stay online. But when i open any internet application ( I Explorer, AOL IM, Claris Email) they all say to cheack connection settings, or that i am not connected. I've tryed configuring all the settings, and the control panels(PPP, Remote Access, TCP/IP) and no internet applications will load any web content. Is there anything i can do to get this issue resolved?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Patrick,
For my favorite older optimization, OS 8.1 with IE 5.1 wins every time. The 7200/90 i configured for my daughter to take to college years ago has that setup and is still going strong. It sits beside our mini for all the OS 7 and 8 tasks and has not complained about a dead PRAM battery for three years.
    Jim
Make that 4 years. Time flies while kids are off to college. The first G3 in the basement is faster at handling graphics than the 7200 but that is about the only difference. ( It has not had a PRAM battery since 2001 and surfs the web with that same configuration at 52K. The mini running OS 10.43 clocks in at 48K.)

  • Best Practice: Configuring Windows Azure Management Services

I have a 3 Websites, 1 Blob Storage, and 1 SQL Server that I would like to configure for basic stability and performance monitoring. I know I can set up alerts through Management Services based on various metrics. My question is, can someone give me a recommended
set of metrics that are good baselines?
It is nice that Azure is so customizable, but frankly I have no idea how much CPU Time in milliseconds over a given evaluation window is appropriate. Or how many Http Server Errors? More than 0 seems bad, no? Wouldn't I want to know of any/all errors?
So if anyone has some "best practice" metrics for me, that would be really helpful.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
      >> can someone give me a recommended set of metrics that are good baselines?
Actually, many metrics depend on your scenario. For instance, if there're a lot of concurrent requests or if a single request is expected to take some heavy computation, then it is expected to have a high CPU usage, thus it is difficult to give
    you a specific number.
In general, you may want the CPU usage of a web server to be as high as possible (idle CPU costs money but does not provide valuable results), but if it is low enough, if additional concurrent requests are received, they can be served without too much
delay. In Windows Azure, you may want to setup auto scaling so that if CPU usage is high enough during a period, you create a new instance. If CPU usage is low enough during a period, you remove an instance. You may also want to use response time in addition
to CPU to monitor whether you need to add/remove an instance.
      >> Or how many Http Server Errors? More than 0 seems bad, no? Wouldn't I want to know of any/all errors?
As for server error, in general you want to get notified by all errors (> 0), however they're unexpected and need to be investigated. But if in your scenario you expect a certain level of server errors, then it is fine to use a larger number.

  • Best practice configuration for SQL 2014 to achieve HA when hosted on Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster

    Hi,
I've had a hunt around but so far I've not found a conclusive answer to my question.  I am currently moving from a SQL 2008R2 (physical tin) failover cluster to a virtual environment build on Hyper-V 2012R2.  I am building everything with SQL 2014
    SP1.
I want to achieve the same level of high availability that I currently have and at the same time make sure that I can replicate (DR) data offsite (Azure) in the future.  I have two options with SQL which are clustered instance (basically the same as
I have now) or AlwaysOn Availability Groups for database level HA.
I am unsure which is the best method to use when the SQL nodes are highly available guests on Hyper-V, trying to imagine how the guests will all move around in the case of a host server failure is a bit mind boggling to say the least.
I am leaning towards a instance failover but I would appreciate any input/advice etc.
    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
To start with I will not be installing SQL Server 2014 with SP1, as SP1 has bugs and Microsoft has disabled its download. See reference: http://www.eweek.com/database/microsoft-halts-sql-server-2014-sp1-downloads.html
With regards, I would go for AlwaysOn Availability Groups configuration, because it has several benefits:
You will get same amount of high availability you normally get with native cluster configuration, if you use AlwaysOn configuration. However, AlwaysOn configuration provides more granular high availability, and fail-over are invisible to the application,
if you using Availability Group listener to connect to server.
You can offload read-only workloads to secondary replica.
You can perform transaction log backups on secondary replica.
Reduce production downtime during patching or other planned work on the server.
So in short, you should use AlwaysOn configuration.
