MacMini as media center with eyeTV

I'm trying to collect some facts and thoughts about the idea of using the MacMini as a media center at home. There seems to be some hard feelings regarding FrontRow 2.0 in Leopard, but I can't see that they would have any greater impact in the set up I'm planning - can you?
I'd like to...
...access my iTunes library
...look at iPhoto pics
...watch DVDs
...watch DIVx, AVI, VIDEO_CD
...record TV
...use our old 21 inch 4:3 CRT television + external amp + analog cable (just usual antenna signal)
I don't have to...
...use the Mini to anything else (like surfing, email)
...5.1 sound or something like that
I'm looking at a MacMini with the Elgato eyeTV 250 plus and a DVI-video adapter.
A few questions:
* What about the quality of the recorded video using eyeTV? As VHS or better?
* Is eyeTV integrated into FrontRow nowadays? I'd like to schedule my recordings that way - as simple as possible.
* Do I switch channels using eyeTV, or do I still have the ordinary antenna signal to the TV so I can use that remote i I'd like? Perhaps I need to split the antenna signal into two cables - one going to elgato and one to the TV (side by side with the scart from the Mini).

Hey Goka,
I recently purchased a Mac Mini for this very reason. I've only had it for a few days but here's what I've discovered in answer to your questions:
1.) It will access your iTunes library, including shared libraries over your home network. However, shared libraries currently will not display album art (something many users are frustrated with - I guess previous versions of Front Row did support album art for shared libraries). Hopefully this is an issue Apple will resolve soon in an update. I've written them asking them to address it and many others have as well... you may want to add your 10 cents too. The only trick to the shared libraries is that you have to tell Front Row to look for it each time you boot/wake up your machine (it's a menu item in the Front Row interface called "Sources"). I have yet to experience a stutter on these shared files on our home wireless network.
2.) I haven't tried the iPhoto thing yet but hope to soon. I'll let someone else speak to that... I know it's possible.
3.) I've watched two DVDs right through Front Row. When you have a disc inserted it will become a menu option in Front Row. If you hit menu on your Apple Remote quickly it'll go to the DVD menu with full navigation through your Apple Remote, and if you hit Menu and hold it for a second it'll bring you back to the Front Row menu.
4.) If I understand it correctly theoretically anything you can play in QuickTime you can play in Front Row. I've successfully played some Xvid files so far. However, over our home wireless network larger files were difficult to stream (very stuttery). As a result I just connected an external USB hard drive to the Mac Mini... I can still access and manage the contents over the home network but the files are local to the Mac Mini so they load quickly and play flawlessly. The one trick is to make alias files of your movies (wherever you decide to store them) and place them in your Mac Mini's "Movies" folder (this way they'll show up in your Movies directory in Front Row. I noticed that sometimes accessing things over network required me "connecting" to the computer before opening Front Row on boot/wake up (another reason I opted to store movies locally and manage remotely).
4.) Recording TV... I haven't gotten to this piece yet. I'm hoping someone else can speak to this because this is something I want to do as well. I've been looking at the TVMicro (which comes with TheTube software for $60-90) and the EyeTV (which comes with EyeTV software for $150-200). Both seemed to receive reviews of 4+ stars everywhere I've looked. I wish there was a way to see the software for both in action. My biggest question is can you load the program and navigate (including just regular full screen viewing) via the Apple Remote or provided remote control - I don't want to have to get up and use the keyboard/mouse every time I want to watch TV. From what I've read the software records in either MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 with various quality levels based on what you're looking for. I wish it had H.264 or Divx encoding but I guess you can always do that after the fact. Unfortunately I can't yet speak to how the quality actually looks as I don't have one either. As a fail-safe for old fashioned channel surfing I've thought about using an RF splitter right before it hits the Mac Mini so you can still surf the channels the old way and/or with your Mac Mini (but if you can't do it easily and seamlessly on the Mac Mini I won't buy one).
5.) We're using our 27" CRT TV and the $20 DVI to Video adaptor Apple makes. Looks great to me. Certainly not HD... but neither is our TV. Sounds like we're on the same page... if I'm concerned about 5.1 and HD I'll buy a BR or HD DVD player and disc for optimal quality. I'm trying to keep most of my digital video files at around 1.2GB for movies (this is a 1500 bitrate for Xvid with 2-pass... looks as good as any standard def satellite TV channel I've seen).
Hope you find some of this feedback helpful. I also hope someone else can speak more to the EyeTV and/or MicroTV solutions that are available, how they perform and how you interact with the software.

  • Nomad 2c user; lost media center with last computer refor

    Hi,
I have a Nomad 2c (and despite its age) and with a 28 smart media card -- it is still working well. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced my old media center cd. I've read similar threads where people are told to go download mediasource. The downloads I have seen, such as Creative MediaSource - NOMAD Pack for Creative NOMAD II/IIc/II MG (version .00.0, all seem to require a previous version (.00.54) to upgrade?
Is there any way to get a copy of media center .00.54. Gi'ven it age, is there any other software I can use to transfer songs to Nomad 2c? I like the player, but don't want to keep listening to the same 50 songs for the rest of its life.
    Help appreciated.
    Irwin

There are newer versions of the software that don't need previous versions to install. You should install the following downloads in the order listed:
Creative MediaSource Software Update version 2.03.29
Creative MediaSource - NOMAD Pack for Creative NOMAD II/IIc/II MG (version .00.0)

  • WRT54GS cannot connect to windows media center with xbox360/can stream media from PC to x-box

    - running win XP MCE and set up xb 360 on  wireless router WRT54GS  updated from V1 to V 4.71.4 .  PC  wired to  router and  DSL signal  goes by wire from wall to modem, router, PC.  I can   stream media through xbox but not make the WMC connection.  I still get the"xbox360 not found on network".  I have gone through x-box set up page and installed the setup files.  I excluded  windows firewall as a problem.     I can connect to Xbox live and  xbox live/media tests on the xbox run w/o any failures.

Thanks for your reply   Yes, I can connect to Xbox live from x box w/o diff.  It seems that the xbox can "see" the PC but the PC cannot "see" the xbox.  My PC is XP not Vista.

  • Windows media center on the xbox with wrt110

I have my network set up, and it works really well. My only complaint is that I can not get a conection between my PC & xbox 360 so I can use windows media center. I can connect to the internet with the 360, but I can not get a connetion to my pc.
    I am using a Wirless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster & 2.4GHz 802.11g. Windows Vista,  & WRT110.
How can I get this to work????????

To use Windows Media Center with your Xbox 360 console, you must have a PC running Windows Media Center. You have a compatible Windows Media Center PC if you have:
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    Windows Vista Ultimate
Note : Windows Media Center is not included with Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Home Basic, or Windows Vista Business.
To set up Windows Media Center on your console:
       1. On your Windows Media Center PC, go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup to make sure your software is up-to-date.
       2. In the Xbox Dashboard, go to My Xbox and open Windows Media Center.
       3. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish Windows Media Center setup.

  • Remote Control doesn't launch Media Center on Pavilion dv9535nr

Hi, is not big deal, but it's kinda annoying, the remote control (image) doesn't launch Windows Media Center with the top right button (green with Windows logo), I don't know exactly when, but it stopped launching Windows Media Center, and my OS (Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bits) includes Windows Media Center (just in case, version 6.0.6001.18254). I can still launch it manually (shortcuts, etc).
I'd rather use Windows Media Center instead of QuickPlay, because of the Xbox 360 connectivity.
So, please, can somebody tell me how can I solve this problem ??
    Thanks
PS. Please forgive my bad English, it's my second language.

So when you hit "Play" it will start playing off your playlist, but no media player ever opens? All I can think is if you are using some super small skin and just not noticing it off in a corner or something, or if you used to have multiple monitors and drug it onto the secondary and now only use one...
The only solution I found to make the hardware work right I don't think I'm supposed to post, because it includes "don't use any software coded by CL" lol. Also I don't think this would be the right solution for you, as it sounds like the remote is working fine with MediaSource for the most part (or I am horribly misunderstanding).

  • Insignia 55" TV HDMI Media Center DVD Pixelated Picture

Been using a Win 7 64bit Media Center with Media Browser to watch DVD on a Zenith 32" HDTV through a Pioneer SX -821 receiver using HDMI cables from a Radeon 5670 graphics card on a quad core PC.  Great picture but when hooking up a NS-55L260A13 with the same setup the picture is very pixelated, no blacks and poor quality.  The Windows 7 desktop, IE 9, and the Media Browser images are crystal clear and vivid.  Tried loading the Shark007 codex pack with no improvement.  Any ideas?

These days, DVD is considered an inferior source. A larger TV will only magnify the poor attempts to scale the DVD source. One cannot fairly judge the quality of a display based on DVD playback.

  • ITunes vs. Windows Media Center

After configuring Media Center with my Xbox and without adding any libraries all a sudden it appears that I have major file/folder permission issues with my music library. A majority of my library files have a lock icon on them which indicates that a Windows application took control of permissions. The only way I can get iTunes to even load or play songs is by double clicking on the artist folder and click Continue when the You don't currently have permission to access folder prompt comes up. A side note states that Click Continue to permantently get access to this folder and once I do click Continue the permissions drastically change and stick. I'm pretty sure its Media Center because when it was first configured a new user Media Center related username was created.
Anyone else have this same issue?
I have a open case with Microsoft and they have no clue on the fix but I'm starting to find others with the same problem. They have tried to mess with folder permissions so either the OS is foobar'd or they don't understand file/folder security well enough. I will fight to the end because I'm not reimaging my PC. They seem to think its a virus or malware and told me that I may have to reimage my PC, WTH?

A majority of my library files have a lock icon on them which indicates that a Windows application took control of permissions.
Just doublechecking, g ... as well as checking to see if that "new user" has been created, and has the permissions instead of your usual account, have you checked on the Ownership of those files and folders? (In the Security tab of the properties on the folders in question, click the "Advanced" button to see the current owners.)
Is your account the Owner? Or does the new account or something else have ownership?

  • Quickplay/QuickLaunch/Media Center questions

My dv9925nr does not have Quick Launch buttons, yet it has the software installed. Can I safely remove it? QuickPlay runs as 3.6, yet shows as 2.x in the folder. Also, trying to learn if I can use the Quickplay buttons to run Media Center, and remove Quickplay.

well u can work media center with the buttons  and i would say keep quickplay because its a part of hp and media center and quickplay are pretty much the same thing but quickplay can be used in a smaller screen setting media center uses the whole screen
media center is just usless on a small screen witch your right in front of so no need for big buttons i say switch all together and go with mricosoft zune its plays movies music pictures and ever thing and it works perfectly with the express card remote  only downfall it dosent reconise avi files... =(

  • Mac Mini G4 - Media Center (Again)

    Hello,
I'd like to thank first of all the people that have helped me with finding the right TV/LCD TV to use with my mac mini G4. I haven't made my move yet but it has not stopped me from enjoying our mac mini G4 as a media center with my old tube TV (watching DVD, internet, family photos, etc ... all from the couch).
I've now been looking for a while for a way to record various video feeds (from TV, DVD player, or cable set top box (Comcast)) to my mac mini G4. What I want to do is use also my mac mini G4 as a DVD recorder for TV shows and stuff like that.
I know there is Elgato, Plextor, and others like that but they often seem expensive and I don't need all that fancy scheduling program guides (can't you even just do scheduling with automator ???). Heck, I've even looked into the neuros products MPEG4 recorders.
Basically, can someone point me to a basic "something" that will take a video feed from cable, TV or DVD player, and enable me to record it to my mac mini where I can later on burn it to a dvd or leave it on the hard drive. I want something cheap, easy to use, proven and not with alot of extras... Something basic.
Thank you very much for all you help
    Eric McCann

Hey Eric, Here's what I did. I tried to make it complicated first, but then I realized that the easiest (and cheapest) thing to do was to buy a dvd recorder. What I mean is one that would normally replace a vcr. If you record on dvd rw's, you can then move it to the computer and re-record on the disc when you're through. I use mac the ripper, and handbrake to rip and code my video. Here's the basic process: record to dvd rw; put the disc in the mac; rip it with mac the ripper. If I just want to keep it on the computer, that's it, I'm done. I can open the video ts folder from dvd player on the mac. If I want to burn it on a dvd, I open the folder with handbrake, and code it into mpeg4. Import that into iMovie and then burn the dvd with iDvd. Or, you could put it together with Toast if you wanted to buy that program. The other two are free, and everything else came with your mac. All total, I'm out 98 bucks for a basic Magnavox dvd recorder at Wal-Mart, and I get all the program functions of a vcr. Not elegant by any means, but it works for me. I looked at all the hardware encoders you mentioned, but decided to put the extra money toward a 23" lcd tv to use as a monitor. Good luck, there is always about 867 ways to do this stuff, just decide which way you want to go, then don't look back.

  • Windows 10 Becomes Windows 8 When Media Center is added

While setting up and installing Media center with the Key that I have, It changes Windows 10 to windows 8.1 pro.
It keeps all the files, but renders builds useless.
I think that there needs to be a way to disable this or fix it.
a lot of people that are using Media center would like to use it with out it mucking up the works.
Is there a way to repair and fix this issue.
Oh and Media Center Does not Run it crashes when trying to execute on Windows 10 Enterprise.

Media Center is NOT supported by Win 10.
    Sorry.

Reviewing the data, it appears that to be inaccurate
to state that "Media Center" "is NOT Compatible with windows 10".
I give this reason for the justification of the argument
Windows Media Center is Keycode activated
and is part of the OS.
If it is a part of the os then it is intentional design of the product .
There fore seeing how it is a part of the product and there is no Hack being performed then how can we state that Media Center is not compatible.
that is like stating that my "Honda Insight" while it is a Hybrid can not run in electric only mode.
While not advertised to be able to run it in electric Mode, a knowledgeable  user can manipulate the gas pedal and use electric mode as it was intended for .In this case the gas pedal depressed sends the vehicle in to charging mode, and then a light
amount of pressure on the gas will allow the said vehicle  to run in Electric mode only until said battery is depleted.
Gas Pedal  is  the control mechanism for activating and deactivating the EV mode in the car
Windows Key Code is the mechanism for activating certain software in windows.
So this statement must be true and logical.
Windows 10 is built on Windows 8 back bone and thus because this is true, Windows 10 becomes Windows 8 Media Center because Windows 10 is windows 8 at the heart of the beast.
So to state that Media Center is NOT compatible is an untrue statement.
How ever what is true once you activate  Media Center, there is enough changes to the registry that renders it to Windows 8 but not enough to cause a full deactivation.
Also if it where the case then , the registry system should have rejected the key .
So in my opinion Windows 10 is Windows 8 as it should have been originally .

  • Mini with Eyetv in Media Center software

What Media Center Software Works with Eyetv Hybrid from 2011

Let me correct some info, and add some.  The tuner is correct, but it is the NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS card that was replaced because of the noisy fans.
I also see on HP's website that this particular computer has a BIOS update that is supposed to correct a problem of "no audio with HDMI" for the GeForce 9500 GS card.  I tried downloading and installing it, but the installation was stopped becuase my "system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update."  I have no idea what possible requirements I'm missing, though!
That BIOS update is for Ver 62.94.1F.00.26.  I have no idea what the current version of the BIOS is, and several chats with HP technical support have not helped at all (they haven't even told me how to find the current BIOS version, which seems inexcusable).
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate the help.
    Thanks,
    Eric Stahlfeld

Based on what you've posted, your computer does not have the right tuner.   You need a QAM tuner to record locals from FiOS, or a CableCard tuner to record all local and cable channels from FiOS.
QAM tuners to record local channels only
This requires Windows Vista or Windows 7
    Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250
SiliconDust HDHomeRun (info on a sale)
CableCard tuner to record local and cable channels
This requires Windows 7 + one CableCard from Verizon for $3.99/mo
ATI TV Wonder Digital PC CableCard Tuner (records one channel at a time) -- $200-$250 on ebay
Ceton MOCUR tuner (records four channels at a time) -- coming in early 2010 for $400-$600
Make sure your computer has Windows 7 Home Premium (or better) installed.   That's necessary to support CableCard tuners.

  • Can any one help me with CD/Audio disc playback problem on media center m8200n running Windows Vista

I have HP Media Center m8200n Dest top running WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32 BIT edition. It  has MEDIA CENTER and MEDIA PLAYER. I experience problems with the computer being able to play CD music discs.  What happens is that the Disc will play only for 63 seconds exactly and then stop playing the track, the player will then skip tracks, settle on another one, play it for a few moments and then skip to the end and then play nothing. It gives me an error message that it cannot read the disc.  This happens with any and every standard store bought CD new or used. These CDs also do play on my laptop running basically same operating system.  This happens whether I trying to Play a disc or burn the disc to the hard drive.  The drives work great though as they do play DATA discs all the way through. MP3 discs play fine.  It also plays the DVD movies with no problem. Windows media player doesn't make it work, also installed VLC player and REALPLAYER to try some other players and they also don't work for music, only DVDs. They all only produce 63 seconds of music play back  from a disc. I've already tried Changing ENHANCEMENTS, UPDATING DRIVERS, UNINSTALLING THE DISC DRIVE and then re-installing back into WINDOWS but none of that helped. SYSTEM came with the integrated REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO on the mother boad for multi channel playback options and I've downloaded those updated drivers again but that doesn't do anything.  Thinking it might be a hardware drive problem I purchased a new LG BLU-RAY DRIVE/BURNER super multi drive which plays fantastic for any video format from Blu-Ray to regular DVD format with the Power DVD software but the machine is causing even this new drive to have the same problem with the audio and it cuts out playing the audio disc within the same 63 seconds running audio disc. . There seems to be a software glitch and I'm wondering if you can help.  Also the sound card seems to work perfectly fine. I downloaded I-Tunes and copied over audio files to the computer via my flash drive and when I play those files from the hard drive, or even the sample windows media files which reside on the hard drive in MY MUSIC, all files play through perfectly, fully, and with great sound. Audio out jacks in back of computer work fine as also does the front head phone jacks upfront. Something in the software when playing a audio disc/file through the dic drives???? I've got hundreds of CD and it's a bummer not beng able to lay them through the system. Does anyone think moving from VISTA PREMIUM to a upgraded version like ULTIMATE or even going up to Windows 7 might solve problem??? What about the 32 bit verses 64 bit editions??? My system should be able to run in the 64 bit frame work also. THANK YOU in advance!!!

    Hi,
All dimms work individually?  Did you run a bootable memory diagnostic to determine the reliability? Did you run a diagnostic on the hard drive?  I believe that your PC came with PC Doctor and that you can create a bootable diagnostic disk. Did you create that disk?  Be sure to purchase memory dimms from a manufacturer that will stand behind their product with a guarantee such as Crucial, Corsair or Kingston. Buy directly from the manufacturer and they will stand behind the guarantee. Be sure that all of the dimms are identical. Use CPU-Z to determine that the specifications are indeed identical.
You have some options to consider once you can stablize your PC for updating the BIOS.
Locate a hard drive and use the HP external recovery media to build a VISTA system. -- safest method
Use a VISTA repair disk and at the command prompt try executing the HP BIOS update (Admin). -- safe
Try a bootable BIOS update process as suggested at this site. --  less safe but doable
